#i knit because i like it

It's just different skills. This is about knowing the viscosity of the paint, color theory, moving the canvas smoothly, and having the correct set up - which here looks like a handmade jig.
Just because it looks easy doesn't mean it is, and your art is not better/worse because someone else has a different process.
Edit: not to mention the camera set up. Filming things in a way that people will enjoy is another skillset.
#lets not put other people down#people who program knitting machines are still artists even if it takes me longer to do the same work#i knit because i like it#they like programming/designing#it's all ok

Several weeks ago one of my coworkers called me over into her cubicle and gave me a very unexpected gift. Her mother passed away recently, and she'd been packing stuff up at her condo to give to relatives and sell, so the home could be sold. The mother was an avid knitter and crocheter, and when my coworker came upon her stash of equipment, she told me, she "immediately thought of me as someone who might get some use out of it."
So, I have inherited a varied collection of knitting needles and crochet hooks, cable needles, sewing needles, and, best of all, now-out-of-print pattern books, mostly for blankets, because that was what this lady loved to make most. Plus, I also have a bunch of gauge swatches she made, pinned to little bits of card covered in perfect schoolteacher handwriting setting out the patterns they were made to test.
And also...
My coworker brought another bag, full of yarn and...knitted blanket squares. Her mother's last started project, before she got too sick to continue. And she asked if there was anything I could do with it.
It turned out, there are twelve completed squares, and I quickly located the pattern book they are from amid those given to me. It's a book of 60 patterns, meant to be put together however the maker wishes into blankets of 20 squares. I figured out which of the numbered patterns were already made, and selected eight more that I thought might go well with them.
So now! I am working on completing! My coworker's mother's last knitting project!
And I really am feeling very good about doing it.
#kidk says stuff#knit#i love making blankets anyway and these patterns are honestly cool#i already have most of the equipment i'd ever need but i still feel warm and fuzzy having this old gal's stuff too#my coworker thought of me ;__; she's seen my scarves and the table runners and stuff i have in my cubicle#she gave me precious things from her mother's beloved hobby because she 'knew i wouldn't let them go to waste'!#i feel very much like a human being and a member of a community because of this idk it's just nice all right?#crafts#blanket completion project

You! Internalize that you do not always need to "improve your art/craft" now! It's great to learn and develop your skills, but you do not need to come from a place of hating where you are now! You certainly do not need to force yourself to improve if it is coming in between you and enjoying the things you do. Improvement for improvements sake does not have to be the only goal, nor the only one that "should matter"
You are allowed to have motifs, enjoyment, ameturism, and "less skill." Kill and devour the capitalist in your head that dictates that you must always improve for everybody else's sake and your "productivity."
#art#i've bought some knitting needles and i don't plan to be a goot knitter. i want to be a 'good' crocheter though#i think i denied myself learning to knit because it 'should mean' that i improve upon my skills every picosecond of the day#look - i want to be a good crocheter for MY sake. i want to be a mediocre knitter also for MY sake#i want to be like squidward - able to do so much art in a vast array of mediums without being the best#also squidward is a *good* artist and a mediocre clarinet player and that is GOOD#he's genuinely a very talented artist. his music is a different beast though <3#a jack of all trades is a master of none - but better is he than a master of one#gentle reminders

It's kinda funny when someone sees me unravel a fiber project either partially or completely, and gets distressed on my behalf and I have to go "No no no, it's part of the process! You gotta trust the process."
#diaryposting#fiber crafts#handcrafts#crochet#knitting#my process includes so much frogging and mom is always bit distressed when she sees it#even though I have explained it part of how I design most of the stuff I make#like the sock pattern I made included SO. MUCH. FROGGING. at the beginning#I think it might be partially because of aphantasia and I need to actually see if something works because I can't visualize anything#and frogging is no different to me than drawing something and going 'Oh that's not going to works' then erasing and redrawing

This is so silly but baby satyrs who r furry right up to the neck + have weirdly long arms (for proportional crawling) that they grow into when they get older. And the fur just kind of goes away. Ur baby is fucking shedding. Weird creepy sheep thing with human face. Sorry if this makes no sense it is very late where I am
YEAH that's what I was imagining... Satyr babies should be creepy little thangs.. Mostly b/c I like species having different concepts of what constitutes a Cute thing based on what their babies look like. Like a couple satyrs gathered around cooing over a new lamb and when you look it's a creepy little pink bug-eyed thing
#mailbox#also tangentially.#supposedly the first shear of a lamb's life is the best/softest because of the way fur grows differently after it gets shaved-#so I like the idea that a satyr baby's first shear traditionally gets knitted into a scarf or smthn#the idea of a satyr parent having a 20 year old ratty little wool scarf in their pocket is cute 2 me

finally finished knitting these socks! The cable pattern has bunnies in it 🐇
Yarn is from Juniper Moon Farm, Herriot Fine yarn in the color ‘timber wolf’ (75/25 baby alpaca/nylon). Needles are size 0 wooden needles from lykke. Bunny cables are from ‘Bunny Sock Hop’ by Ann Clark on Ravelry
#knitting#sock knitting#knitblr#hand knit socks#hand knitted#fiber arts#mine#these took me like… a year? more? because I kept putting them down for months#I want to sew in some elastic to the top bc they do not stay up on their own at all#sock glue works but I want them to have some grip of their own#they’re so soft and cozy though!!#I’m excited to wear them this fall/winter

I wanted to make some kilt hose for the Highland Games but could only manage a single ho 😔
Guess I could hop.
#actually checked the weather and it’s going to be in the ninties so no wool socks for me#pretty pictures come after the socks are both done#wouldn’t have been able to wear them anyway though because I’ve just remembered my plaid skirt is in the darning hoop#knitblr#knit socks#knit kilt hose#kilt hose#Highland Schottische Kilt Hose#Nancy bush#I have very thick calves and ankles and the cuff is too tight. thinking I might rip it out and reknit it on 3 mms#i remember being 8 and my friend telling me how gross it was someone she knew had ‘kankles’. didn’t know what they were but thought it was#stupid to care what your ankles look like. promptly gave me a complex about them and I ended up having ‘kankles’ anyway#it is stupid to care what your ankles look like although it’s annoying not to fit knit sock patterns 😭

A nominally useful but mostly just-for-fun little project, using wool from the Shetland Islands kindly brought back for me by a family friend this summer. The pattern is Beeswax Mitts by Amy van de Laar on Ravelry.
#i really liked this pattern; it was largely intuitive after you got the hang of it and i appreciated her trick for crossing the#single-stitch cables#i think the only thing i changed was the number of stitches picked up for the thumb because why oh why do pattern designers insist on#telling you to pick up a tiny number of stitches that is sure to result in holes#when instead they could. not do that.#knitting#unblocked but i'm not sure i will; it would even out the ribbing a bit but the design came out neatly and i'll just be wearing them around

doing crafty things (knitting, crochet, sewing, etc) is so awesome actually because the other day i was at a craft fair with my friend and this one stall was selling a sweatshirt with granny squares and i casually pointed it out to my friend and the woman running the shop was so excited that i (a young person) even knew what that was and i don’t know where i was going with this but i think it’s really cool when i get to connect with people i don’t know and will never see again over little things like granny squares or sweaters or just the act of creating things to create
#unfortunately i didn’t buy the sweatshirt because it was way out of my ten dollar price range but like it was cool#knitting#crochet#fiber art#po posts

random headcanon: Aoyama likes to knit but he's pretty self-conscious about it, so for the longest time Ichino was the only one to know about his hobby.
(this was inspired by a sudden need to try to knit some kind of inazuma mittens, colorwork is always a struggle for me but I think they turned out nice! and one person who knows inazuma already recognized them as a fandom design so that's another plus)
#I had a knitwork next to me for reference while drawing the first pic so it shouldn't be like all the people “knitting” in tv lol#I also kinda think he's kinda slow but extremely meticulous with clean result. and also he does norwegian purls#(because I myself learned only like a year ago that there's different ways to purl and norwegian is the one I've always done soooo)#own art#inazuma eleven go

my OTHER toxic knitting trait is ignoring gauge entirely for plushies and being pleasantly surprised by the creacher's final size when it's done
#text#personal#knitting#like i know it doesnt matter but WOW i only ever use the starting materials as General Guidelines#'oh you suggest DK and worsted. interesting!'#'ill be making this on super bulky with whatever needles i have on hand thanks :)'#(today though im using the right yarn but needles 1.5 sizes too small. also because that's what i have on hand lmao)#it really doesnt matter and is therefore Fine#i just wish* i had ANY idea how big this lil guy will be 😂#*(not enough to swatch honestly. the whole project is like. 50 rounds. why bother.)#little avogato
