i’m ngl, i’m a big dnd nerd that was running out of high fantasy content to consume and then i stumbled upon your beloved comic. i just wanted to ask what your favorite worldbuilding decision is for utg and if you could pick dnd classes for any (all) of the characters, what they would be 👀

There's two major world things that I'm really happy with and helped a bunch of things click into place I think

One has to do with the magic system, or rather how magic works in that world on a sort of... molecular level? People who've seen me do worldbuilding for a while know I'm cheeky about deriving stuff from physics and loosely drawing parallels here and there, and for the under garden I ended up making it so that a lot of magic runs on wave function interference. Kinda. So the "natural" state of things has its own wave frequencies and magic comes from unnatural frequencies being added into the mix causing shit to go weird

By extension deciding this also made it easier to understand why or how some things can detect magic (they'd pick up on the weird frequencies) AND how it's possible to have magic blocking devices (they emit destructive frequencies that nullify it). Does it fully make sense on a physical level? Not necessarily but I get giddy when I can visualise magic mechanics like this hehe

The other decision was to simplify our lineup of humanoid species from the original DnD esque basis, but in a way that allows us to have basically any humanoid appearance you can think of through a ✨mutation✨ cheatcode. We have two "elf" subspecies (basically the dark elf-like ppl and everyone else, including "dwarf" looking folk, etc) and then a species that technically derives from them (and they're all genetically compatible) that's characterised by having abnormal, often insect-like traits. There's no real limit to their phenotypes since their origin is magical and random in nature, and since they can mix with "normal" elves the degree of bugness varies.

Which means i can have insect people, reptile people, horns or hooves or tails or wings galore without needing to come up with a full background for each of these variants >:)c

ANYHOO sorry I get carried away rambling about these things. Class-wise, I only have claims for some characters who... may be yet to make a full appearance in the comic, and would actually fight:

^ Monk??? Not my first claim but after playing an actual monk the ki system started making a lot of sense

^ Lil' sorcerer u_u probably with a subclass or two but sorcerer would hold up as he grows older

^ I think warlock would work for her well enough. Not a perfect fit but I can see it with some homebrew tweaking

^ Ranger makes sense I feel, she becomes one with the avalanches

^ Barbarian.... barbarian/druid???? Uncharted territory here

^ Warlock but you haven't seen much of it yet.... soon.... (I'm actually so excited for her)

^ This one's easy I just snatched her straight from an old DnD game anyway. That's my rogue artificer babygirl

Hey, so I mean this entirely in good faith and just want to see where you're coming from.

When you draw pictures of people (OC), why do you only list their name, age, disabilities, and race (and some other stuff sometimes)? not likes or interests or hobbies or a look into their life? Is there somewhere else for me to find out more?

Personally, I don't find those to be the most interesting things about a character or a person or an object or anything like that, and I don't typically base characters around it (not saying you do, just not sure why else they take precidence over other aspects of their character)

I’ll try to answer this in the best way possible, but my wording might be off because I am more ill than usual, so bare with me.

1. Experiences with creating Original Characters is not a monolith — what you like to do with characters may not be what another creator likes to do with them. Some people never make backstories for their characters and keep them mainly for designs. Some people like to create backstories, and both of these things can exist and are okay. What you personally find interesting isn’t the same for everyone.

Even if I do have backstories for many of my characters, not all of them are even close to finished yet or even fully fleshed out, I often start with basics and go from there. If you are interested in the backstories of my characters, I have a toyhouse in which I post them.

2. Race, Culture, Age and Disability is a huge part of a lot of people’s lives, I can attest to that for myself. A lot of what I put down as “descriptors” for my characters are for people to get the absolute “bare bones” of who this character is, kind of like a bio on social media. It may not personally interest you, but Culture is a huge aspect on how people develop and think, the way people grow up and who they are around influence their thoughts, likes, dislikes, career, life choices and more. I find that many people from different cultures are often very happy at the representation of their culture being present if done respectfully, and causes a lot of happiness to feel seen.

I have a particular interest in researching humans, cultures, disabilities and diversity. You don’t have to have those interests, the same way I don’t particularly have to have an interest in “likes vs dislikes” of a character.

It would concern me if someone doesn’t care about peoples race or ethnicity, the same way it concerns me when a white person says “well, I don’t see color”, it erases the diverse experience of being human. It erases culture, experience, struggle and more. A lot of POC, myself included, find solace in knowing someone may understand a specific experience of what it’s like growing up a certain way. That we are not alone in our struggles.

And this all relates to Disability as well. Able-bodied people are not going to understand the life of a disabled person they haven’t lived in. Growing up disabled, becoming disabled later in life, in general /being/ disabled is a different way of life than the average person. We have struggles and experiences not everyone can relate to — which means by sharing this in a description of a character — it can actually tell a lot about what they’ve been through and understand.

Other disabled people may not understand what life is like for another disabled person — I have had numerous asks and messages by other disabled people and able-bodied people alike telling me they are happy to see representation of a specific disability, or that they discovered a disability through my artwork and they were able to research it or even apply it to their medical training. This is a huge reason for why I do what I do.

📜 How does your clan’s warrior code differ from other clans?

Ranchclan in particular has a pretty lax warrior code! Especially compared to Valleyclan who can be rather traditional, Ranchclan is much more welcoming of outsiders (doesn’t allow daylight warriors though, you can be an ex-kittypet but your focus has to be on your clan, not your folk), Obviously clerics are allowed to have kits, as are the leader and deputy even if there’s talk about it. I reference a lot of @/bonefalls work and their expanded warrior code, including stuff like Queens Rights.

❔Do you have any suggestions for people looking to start their own clangen blogs?

Include everything in your notes, don’t include everything in your notes. Which doesn’t make much sense, but what I’m saying is like, look at Everything. The relationship tab, cats thoughts, patrol beginnings and events, and you don’t have to write All of it, because a lot of it is probably useless, but when you’re able to string a couple of events relating to a small group, it really works out in your favor for connecting dots and plot lines.

Play 24 moons ahead, and DRAW 24 moons ahead. This may just be a me thing, but having the buffer pages of regular updates on queue, and giving me time to work on 25-48 and 49-72. It also helps with plot writing because you don’t get attached and have big introductions for loners who join the clan only to die from redcough the next moon. This way you can track important plot lines between multiple moons and be able to set the scene for how and when events happen, it’s also great for me making bonusranch content for inbetween because I get interactions from people who inspire them the week of posting ya know.

Speaking of, don’t be afraid to move around small events in the timeline or diverge from clangen as much as you’d like, it’s just the base, and for the most part it doesn’t matter if someone comes out of the closet on moon 23 or 24 if it fits with your pacing better.

Keep your clan small. It’s going to grow rapidly, as clangen is wont to do. Ranchclan in particular has smaller litters for whatever reason, but don’t be afraid to cull kits (sorry), loners, or other clan-joiners to reduce your population and keep only the characters who have plot lines and investments. Otherwise! Save them for mass extinction fodder.

Typefaces, typefaces, typefaces. So many clangen blogs suffer from the fact that some of y’all have ass handwriting or pick really swirly cursive fonts, or write too small! (not to call out anyone specific, many blogs do this and I get the reasons for it!) but making a clean, concise, and legible typeface is going to up your engagement, and makes your panels look cleaner. There are nice handwritten fonts out there, or making your own like ranchclans custom typeface from Calligraphr. Same thing with actually labeling characters in your panels, it’s really useful especially when you’re just starting and introducing characters, and/or when your clan gets large asf and needs reminders. Something I really want to do for Ranchclan sometime is go through and make image ids for the whole thing, captions in the description, and I want to go through with a colorblind filter to make sure that my type doesnt blend in with the background

📝 What do your notes look like?

These are some of my older notes, and like I said previously , a lot of these events get moved around to different moons where less happens. I’ve also started taking more in-depth notes since I started, and events I don’t use but still like, I save for bonusranch content. I sometimes have notes like if someone is injured and it later leaves a scar, I go back and mention where the injury in placed in my notes for future reference.

So I was actually just talking with my partner about it, and I think the goal for Ranchclan is 1000 moons!! I’m not holding myself super strongly to that if I end up losing passion about it, but so far I’m having the time of my life working on Ranchclan and will keep doing it till I’m bored, no set end, just the cats daily lives. I’ll be working on other projects in the meantime, like Dungeonclan (sorry I started Houndclan and did get bored, dogs are less interesting to draw despite their variety), and expanding ranchclans world with Valleyclan and Wanderingclan. Maybe someday I’ll post about my human specific ocs (*cough* dnd characters *cough*)

Gen writing update

I had a few requests come in after they closed (no worries to those who did so! I know it was a little confusing regarding such) so i'll be writing those when i get the chance and sending them out into the world, beyond that however, any request-based things are closed (for now) if I get any during this closed period I'm sorry but I'll have to ignore them/not do them. I'm too busy with life/other wips to add them to my list, sorry!

Holiday Spirit is going to be my writing focus for the next couple weeks! It's about halfway done and I'd like it finished so I can move on with things lol

Confused spirit is going to take a bit, as like i've said before I'm writing multiple chapters back to back for the purpose on ensuring proper flow/building my buffer back up, i know it's been a bit but believe me it's been on my mind guhh

I was saving this for the end just because it sounds worse than it actually is.

I'm going to take a break from posting/tumblr/etc for about a week or two and spend some extra hours doing my research stuff. I'm not behind or anything (and def always put it and school first dw) but I kind of want to try and get ahead with it just because of how strict my timeline to finish is 😅

I also just want a bit of a break from constantly writing and maybe do some other hobbies when im not on the research grind. I'll be back at it (again more casually) in a few weeks tho!

oh! i wanted to ask you too but i was thinking of how to articulate my thoughts before asking. I have a lot of trouble making / drawing fan art (it does make me happy don't get me wrong!), i get wildly insecure about basically putting my interests on blast and I guess I was wondering if you've dealt with that?

like I get worried about putting my own spin on an already established character and deep diving into their character more, and it gets my brain going in a negative spiral-y way y'know?

i know EXACTLY how you feel, been there many times!! it sucks!! there's so much you want to draw and express but you fear you'll come across as annoying or cringe or whatever

here's a secret. i'm not sure if this is a good tip due to reasons i'll get to in a second, but what i do to combat this feeling is act annoying about it on purpose. i'll get loud, intense, act all over the top like idgaf (even if i do, in fact, gaf) as a defense mechanism so if people think what i made is cringe, i can more easily dust off my shoulder and turn up my nose, all for the sake of the bit. it does work in giving me enough confidence to share stuff i feel strongly about, even if it's false confidence haha. but the truth is more often than not, people DO like the stuff i thought they were gonna hate.

case in point:

if you had told me back when i drew these that i would end up working on a couch gag on the simpsons i would've laughed like "lol that shit just doesn't happen"

maybe that's an extreme example. a more recent one would be when i started making trolls fanart. the risk of coming off as cringe to my followers was higher so i felt a bit insecure. hence the caption:

yes, acting this way does help me put out the content i feel a bit insecure or even embarrassed about. but in reality there's nothing to be embarrassed about. cringe culture is dead!!! but i'm still very socially anxious yknow???? i hate feeling vulnerable lol

the reason why i said this might not be a great thing to do is that it discourages being genuine. i think it's important to be genuine about the things you make and why you love them. people love to see passionate people create things, no matter what it is! and this is just with art in general, but if you're talking about fanart, hell all the more reason to share it! because fans will always eat up new content and follow new creators in their fandoms. sure maybe your stuff isn't to everyone's liking, but just how you can't please everyone, there will always be someone looking forward to what you make, even if you feel like it's not good enough. always remember: two cakes.

So I actually swore for the longest time that the acotar fandom was a cult and I would never read the books. But I wanted to understand the memes so I started watching Cari Can Read’s plot summaries on YouTube and was interested enough that I gave in. I am dragging my feet through throne of glass and might get to crescent city when I’m retired.

What character across all of her books do you relate to the most and why?

Absolutely Nesta. I relate so much to her internal struggles with guilt, self-criticism and deep loneliness. I found her story of healing and friendship so powerful and she gives me hope that I might one day be freed from the prison that is utter self-loathing.

What inspired you to begin contributing to the fandom (i.e., fanfics, artwork, commissions, analysis, all of the above, or something else?)

I have been telling myself stories about my favorite characters from books and movies and tv for years and years but never actually sat down to write any of them. But something about Elain and Lucien really got me in a choke hold and I decided it was about time.

As for the blobs, they are based on my childhood art style (when my preschool teacher explained to me how to draw stick figures, I completely missed the part where they were supposed to have bodies and not just be giant heads with arms and legs coming off) and I drew the first acotar blob drawing for Eris week because I wanted to contribute something but didn’t have time to make a proper drawing and the blobs ended up taking over my life from there 😂

Like Bruce curled up into the bed that is supposed to be for her (BATSIS) Wich is clearly to small for Bruce, and he's burying his head into the plushie (make it a Sheep? Or worse make it a Superman or wonder woman plushie) and Bruce is just crying his hear and eyes out,

My god the feeling that Dick is just in the same place as Bruce but Dick is on the floor grieving, holding those paintings as if they were a life line because.... He failed them, he failed another kid, he wasn't there in time and now there is probably no more time, he probably lost another kid again...... He failed, he's a failure of an older brother, imagine that feeling sinking in and he starts feeling just as that time when Jason dies and he wasn't there and he lost his baby brother but this time is that he was ignorant and neglectful and even fully forgot that he had a baby sister and now he will never have time with her..... He'll never get back those 6 six years..... She has another older sibling to look up to, one that actually notices her and they are attached to the hip, a sibling that she really cares and loves, a brother that will do anything to keep her safe,.... How can he compete with that? but he needs to right? Just to have a small chance.

I put my money on the Wonder Woman because 1. What if batsis had a plushie of every hero but not the bats? Damage. 2. She initially got the Wonder Woman plushie as a gift for Jason, and when he died, she took it back. Double damage.

See? I wouldn't be able to come up with this stuff completely on my own, the asks are important:)))

I fully wrote the Dick crying on the floor, clutching drawings with the idea that batsis drew two versions of the same idea, him and his parents, and him, his parents, and the bat fam btw. I wanted to add that, but he'd be holding them with the drawn site to his chest so it wouldn't show, so I had to erase that.

By the time the Dick saga fully begins I fear he'll be delusional enough to see you sticking around a family named Grayson as a sign that everything is fine and you'll forgive everything since you clearly missed him them so much. He'll be deep in the hells of denial. 5 stages of grief? Nah. It's just denial.

This isn't exactly Nolan vs Bruce- but I have had a scene since like- chapter 13, for a little jab Nolan will throw at Damian, and I think you'll enjoy it when and how it happens. But to go back to the dad vs ...dna donor. That'll be another breakdown for Bruce, full crashout. Are people watching? The league? He doesn't care. He just needs to punch something so he can calm down, maybe cry a bit more- his baby had been with a murderer for years- and then the planning starts.

Now- If it's Brucie who meets the man. Nolan "I don't know who you are, son. But I know you're a whore. Stay away from my kids and wife." Grayson just lies and moves past, because he's a changed man- and he may have been bribed to play nice.

Brucie is flabbergasted- how dare- he's right- but still. He could ignore it, but he also could be petty, finding every way possible to be as close to his daughter and the other two kids(they're not his and he's pissy about them being closer to batsis than his own kids) pushing and pushing until, probably Oliver since the lil manipulative blueberry doesn't like this fool being so friendly with his big sis and completely ignoring him and Mark, just starts screaming and crying that the bad man(Bruce) did something bad. (The Bruce Wayne pr team wants to quit.) Be it either calling him or her sister something mean, or going the extra evil mile and saying to stop touching me like that pervert- the papers will have a field trip. Bruce shan't know peace, his kids were raised for higher society, to network with even the worst of the worst, Mark and Oliver? They'll point and scream stranger danger just to fuck with someone.

Now does this give Nolan the great excuse to punch him? Yes. Debbie is faster to play along, though, and she ends up beating Bruce with her purse, Nolan is resigned to a bodyguard post, simply dragging Bruce away under his arm like he's holding a cardboard cut out.

If it's batman, it's very much against either man's will and will probably end up in a brawl. Now the kids are split into the "Stop that" and "fuck his shit up" camps, until Nolan punches something and everyone is reminded that Bruce will break his fist if he does land a punch. Batsis and Jason intervene, sadly, but Bruce is being stupid, and Nolan is on thin ice with the government. He can't be seen fighting with another hero... again.

A lot of restrictions are about to be put on Nolan, so sadly, his hands are tied. Good thing his wife and kids are just as feral as he is.
