Finally a really watched Donnie Darko 8/10 chilling in a way that I wanna call comforting but more like in the way that waking up in reality after you've had a bad dream is comforting like you can acknowledge like Woah glad I don't actually live in that nightmare universe like youre chilled and a tad shaken but still like comforted that you can still grasp the reality after the fact

it's really weird to me the way people have been talking about maria lately.... like i know maria wasnt the most developed character in her earlier appearances and she also didnt get to have a normal childhood experience but seeing people say she has no personality and has no joy or whimsy or never got to be a kid at all makes me wonder if im the only person whos actually been paying attention to maria this whole time...???? like do people think she was a sad miserable kid who never got to have fun because of her disability or something ? because that is quite literally the opposite of who she was
and people are being weirdly ableist about it too like talking like her illness is the reason for all those traits she supposedly lacks. implying disabled people cant be happy or have fun or whatever. like come on man

These two lines in the movie make me the most mentally unwell.
"I should have been the one to go. You needed your mother more than you needed me."
The amount of layers to this, oh my god. He's blaming himself for being alive. He probably wants to die. He genuinely thinks Adrian needs Emilie more.
And it's been YEARS since Emilie's passed away. Look how tiny Adrian is over there, he only just about comes about the bedpost. Gabriel still looks like he did in the pictures of when Adrian was little. It's been literal years. It could have literally been a full decade ago.
And Gabriel breaks the narrative here. He's supposed to be telling a story, he's supposed to be saying what happened in the past. But at this point, he doesn't say "your mother was taken from us" or anything like that referencing Emilie's passing. The story breaks, he's using a statement. I should have been the one to go. It's completely out of the story, because he isn't saying what he felt then, there's no "I felt like I should have been the one to go". It's just "I should have been."
Because he still thinks this. It's been about a decade, and his opinion, his feelings about this, is still "I should have died". It interrupts his storytelling because of how strongly he feels this way, almost like it's a fact to him.
And then he follows it with "You needed your mother more than you needed me." Again, he says this like it's a fact, like Adrian actually did need his mother more. Because he believes it himself. And this could be because of so many things. It could be because of the way people consider the mother to be the one supposed to care for the children much more than the father, or it could be that Gabriel himself didn't see how much Adrian needed him, or even that Gabriel didn't see himself as useful to Adrian. Especially because he said he should have been the one to die. He's essentially saying he was useless. That he was expendable but Emilie wasn't. He literally is implying he doesn't see any worth in himself regarding being a father.
And then it's not just his grief, it's Adrian's grief that has him desperate to bring Emilie back. He literally doesn't care about himself, he wants his son to be happy and doesn't see himself as able to do that. He loves him to the point of being suicidal and self-sacrificing if it would give Adrian what he need, all while simultaneously not seeing himself as what Adrian needs because he doesn't think he has that much worth regarding him.

Help I’m thinking too hard about the unexplored world building implications of the seven kisses lead to pregnancy in a world where there seems to be/have been a patriarchy and also somehow it works interspecially despite humans and akiridions having entirely different modes of existence/bodily function
#that movie is still fucking me up (derogatory) almost four years later#like Aja overcomes a seemingly patriarchal issue of princesses can’t be warriors’ that she at least thinks is systemic sexism until#she learns her mom was a warrior#but also her parents created a new global government so perhaps systemic patriarchy was a thing before they upended the old system (that#morando was trying to restore??)#but also what are the implications of this world that had make warriors predominantly but also the men got pregnant? I mean the women still#have breasts and the baby thing is quite fast so perhaps women stayed home with newborns?#and also that culture would probably have some sort of milestone associated with each kiss right? like Aja mostly didn’t care about Rules or#The Way Things Should Be Done so it makes sense she didn’t think too hard about milestones especially when surrounded by human dating cultur#BUT ALSO in the first episode(s?) the go out of their way to say that humans are biological and akiridions are ‘energy based’ so like how#does that factor into this whole shitshow?#did she maybe think the whole species thing meant she and Steve couldn’t ever have kids (which could be an issue with the whole ‘Royal’ thin#thus deserving exploration too)#and like also there’s the Aja and krel’s parents were somewhat less fertile or Aja and Krel have at least one dead sibling thing cause she#says 3 or 4 babies#and we don’t necessarily know if she and Krel were even from the same pregnancy since she consistently calls him little brother#and how do repeat pregnancies work? is it on multiples of seven or like is there something else to it?#don’t even get me started on vex having had a family (implied to be a wife and kids) nor how his relationship with Nancy will work in the#long run cause Jesus#I hate rott so much this isn’t even its worst writing decision#trollhunters rise of the titans#3below#3 below#aja tarron#krel tarron#tales of arcadia#toa

So the new Hunger Games book. I have some thoughts.
Can't wait to see who's gonna play which characters.
Wonder what Snow will look like middle-aged.
I'm guessing the movie will cut Maysilee having a sister due to Madge being absent from the original films & if so, I wonder how that will affect the Mockingjay pin origins or if they'll completely remove the fact that it originally belonged to her.
Omg, the film could use the same reaping dress (or more likely a replica) for teen Miss Everdeen that they used for Katniss as it is said to be something that belonged to her mother during her time as a Merchant, in the original series.
Can't believe we might finally learn Katniss's parents' names lol.
Omg, do you think they'll at least hint at the baker/apocathery/hunter love triangle?
Oh (no hate to Woody Harrison but) young Haymitch is gonna be white, isn't he? Well, at least they could let him have black hair. & that wouldn't nessaryly even break movie cannon. All they'd need is to have a scene showing/implying that the stylists are gonna dye his hair after he ends up winning the games. The movie could even create an in-universe reason (outside of the Capitol citerzens just thinking it looked better). Such as with blonde people in 12, not coming from the Seam. Snow views it as the perfect subtle punishment to help Haymitch feel a loss of cultural identity by separating him from his community (now that he looks & lives more like a Merchant).
Hope the movie won't try to appeal to Hayffee/Effie stans by adding unnecessary scenes of them getting close, as if Haymitch didn't have a whole ass girlfriend while Effie would be nose deep in Capitol propaganda at that point in time.
Everyone who's saying it's gonna be weird to find Haymitch hot is weak. I was attracted to Woody Harrelson in a wig.
Don't know if this is at all realistic/accruate, but this is how I'd want the movie to end. Haymitch, back in 12. Maybe waking up in his new house after being sedated (due to him losing it after his last interview). Him desperately trying to find out where his family/GF is after discovering his old house empty (left there as a reminder), his GF's family not opening the door & everyone seemingly too nervous to speak to him. Till he eventually ends up on the Everdeen's doorstep (where Miss Everdeen is being comforted) & they explain what happened as best as they can. Then, after he returns to his new home, he gets a phone call from Snow bassically telling him that he should have behaved himself, leading him to rip the phone out of the wall before completely trashing the place. When he eventually wakes up, Hazelle is cleaning up the mess (he forgot to lock the front door). She tries to talk to him about applying alcohol (she was given by miss Everdeen) to the wounds he sustained from smashing up the place & about his girlfriend (as I could imagine the two having been friends as I can only see Haymitch's GF being from the Seam), but he tells her to get out before he starts drinking the alcohol right from the bottle, with a voice over of older Haymitch saying the line 'there's survivors, there's no winners'. Or something along those lines.
Maybe that's too fanficy, though lol.

pet peeve is when a story tells us something is aberrant, but it seems to matter more about who does the behavior than the behavior itself. rorschach in snyder's watchmen isn't going too far; we watch nite owl and silk spectre ii snap necks and arms with gleeful, loving abandon, in slow motion no less, while they lecture the audience about rorschach's violence. heroes frequently torture the plot contrivance out of a villain and then moralize to the camera when the villains do the same. indominus rex's killing spree doesn't shock or appall me; all the jurassic world dinosaurs act like mindless killing machines, and the camera lingers, rapturous, on their cruelty. it's not an outlier. there's nothing interesting about it beyond as a set piece.
in a better script, the indominus rex would have had pathos; a chimera made for entertainment, for profit, stitched together with no regard for itself and placed in a lonely box. a freak among freaks. of course it would be mad. but the film wasn't interested in it as an animal, or a character, only as a moving piece of scenery for people to scream at or breathe tensely while it can clearly smell and reach them but doesn't, because it isn't a character and doesn't have motivations.
it's just sort of boring, i suppose. it tries like all other empty drab things do to cover it with bombast and roaring and soaring brassy scores but it's just sort of dull. a sprawl of nothing.
conversely peele's nope is a transcendent monster movie, imo, because it thinks about the the whys and hows, how jean jacket perceives the world, how the world perceives her, and lets that shape the narrative as much as jupe or emerald or gordy. they consulted biologists and behaviorists, digging into the meat of it. the creature as a camera as an animal as a device. nope has layers. it takes its own insane premise seriously, and has something to say, and is a goddamn good movie. i forgot where i was going with this.
#always rattling that quote from peele about the difference between horror and comedy being a matter of timing#creature horror is my favorite horror and most of it is Bad but i love it. sometimes you strike genuine gold and other times. well.#drives me crazy when monsters behave only in ways meant to be scary rather than how a real living thing would act. you can do both.#i remember hearing about a woman attacked by a moose in her own back yard. it gored and stomped her then left back into the woods#a few minutes later as she tried to crawl away it came back and attacked her again. terrifying! for no purpose!#a prey animal attack is often more frightening and vicious than a predator's imo#because to be eaten -- that carries its own logic. a prey animal though holds fear and rage and desperation in the core of it. it Knows.#a lion is a simple creature compared to a beef bull who just managed to corner the farmer against the fence#unlike say movie monsters continuing to chase and kill and attack while a volcano goes off around them and literally burns them to death#don't get me started on the icy swimming feathered raptor#also the goddamn dimetrodon in the caves like. i have never seen a beast less suited for a goddamn cave. why is it acting like that.#the book jurassic park goes into the behaviors and dynamics and such of the dinosaurs and what it means that we made them and why#using the cutting edge of science to craft both story and its monsters#but the franchise is dreadfully incurious#as many franchises end up being in the end#frog croaks#i guess i wanted to complain about the jurassic world franchise specifically actually#i haven't read crichton since high school. maybe i should revisit and see if my opinion holds lol

the fact that disney is more determined to give us "amazing" visuals rather than good stories and songs anymore is insulting
like they act like they cant have it all. youre the biggest studio ever, you own more companies than anything ever should, you have more money than i can even concieve of.
YOU ARE FULLY CAPABLE OF GIVING US MOVIES THAT ARE AMAZING IN EVERY ASPECT. SO FUCKING SHOW IT
#my post#i watched a video the other day about what mightve been the cause of disneys failure at making musicals in the last decade or so#and it started with. of all movies. tangled! and im still stuck on that#like it was specifically about the 'i see the light' scene when theyre on the water surrounded by the lanterns#the song writers were made to write like 40 songs they had to scrap UNTIL they were finally told the issue#that the team wanted the visuals to come first and for the song to come second. which meant they wanted the song TONED DOWN??#THEY COULD BOTH BE EQUALLY AMAZING HELLO??#it hurts me deeply inside to know. with how much i love that song. THAT THERE COULDVE BEEN AN EVEN BETTER ONE?#and then disney in general is just completely fumbling their songwriters which is why the songs suck#songwriters not given the ability to have a say in the story despite being part of telling the story? being scared to say anything-#-when the whole reason theyre there is to contribute! being told that they arent supposed to add anything new. only execute the plans made!#i have to imagine the storywriters are also being fucked over but the video was specifically about songwriters#my favorite moment in any movie EVER is a moment where the visuals AND the song come together EQUALLY to make the most beautiful moment ever#when moana and te ka are meeting in the middle of the parted sea. the way you can FEEL its the culmination of the movie#the way that te ka is frantically crawling toward and screaming at moana. the way that moana is calmly and confidently walking toward te ka#moana singing this peaceful beautiful song despite the danger. because she knows the truth. she sees te fiti beneath her unwilling disguise#the way that te ka hears her words and reacts by matching that calmness and letting her get close#and everything that that moment is meant to represent and *can* represent even if unintended#its just. its my favorite moment ok. AND IT WOULDNT WORK IF THE SONG WAS TONED DOWN FUCK YOU#i have crossed the horizon to find you. i know your name. and they have stolen the heart from inside you. but this does not define you.#this is not you who are. you know who you are. who you truly are <3#INSERT MEME IMAGE OF GUY CRYING WITH EARBUDS IN#disney#disney criticism#I LITERALLY LOVE DISNEY MOVIES OK THIS IS NOT A HATE POST ABOUT THE MOVIES ITS A HATE POST ABOUT THE COMPANY#btw the video i watched. i recommend! its 'the downfall of the disney movie musical' by calxiyn cares too much on youtube!#disney critical#this especially isnt a tangled hate post btw i adore that movie and i was so sad that it was likely the start of all of this

I just watched a quiet place day one for the first time thinking it would just be like a thriller/suspense and no one told me how steeped this movie is in guttural emotion. I’m over here crying over this monster movie and the display of true human emotion and tragedy and love it shows as if I haven’t seen a million apocalypse movies
#a quiet place day one#the way Sam goes from being a self described ‘mean person’ in the beginning and pretty obviously not wanting to form any bonds to include#how she was trying to get Eric to go to the boat for a while after they met#and she ends up accepting that he cares about her even if it’s just to make her lie#smile he looked so pleased with himself so proud when he was able to get her that pizza#and her giving him her dads cardigan that she clearly holds dearly#the way Eric is terrified of the water and Sam continually calms him down and reassures him it’s okay it’s going to be okay#even though they are both scared out of their minds and she is hurting so much#the way he goes out in an APOCALYPSE to get her meds and help her fend off the pain he goes out despite how utterly terrified he is to make#her that much more comfortable to slow the symptoms of the cancer even just a little bit#I truly gasped at that part it is so insane to me and kind#the way we don’t know if they discussed the plan before she sacrifices herself for him but if they didn’t he knows he can see it when she’s#giving Frodo to him and he looks like he’s about to have a break down like he is so heart broken not only that she would die regardless but#that she is sacrificing herself for him she is putting herself at danger of being ripped limb from limb for the chance that he will make it#are you joking? are you serious with this I’m so obsessed this story alone would have me utterly enamored but the emotion in their faces#the way they are able to convey the depth of their feelings and you can see in equal parts the despair they feel#and the love on a human level say what you will about how the love was meant to be conveyed if it’s romantic or friendly or whatever but you#can tell there is love they care for each other they consistently risk everything for each other#as human beings they decided they care about each other and they choose each other they choose to protect the other#I’m just so in love with it and I didn’t expect to care this much about a monster movie

i love complaining so here’s my complaint of the day! people who watch horror movies and their only takeaway, when prompted by somebody analyzing/understanding part of the film, is “well it didn’t have to result in murder/they didn’t have to do that/that scary thing was unnecessary” are SO fucking annoying. you watched the horrifying movie full of dramatized realities and thought the horrifying things were unnecessary? why even bother with horror at all. go home and turn on gilmore girls and titanic you’ll be alright. those will be easy for you to digest since clearly you can’t think deeply about anything that isn’t completely down to earth and rational

I have lots of thoughts about the canon events in Across the Spiderverse, and I thought I’d share some that I talked vaguely about with my sister when we were coming back from watching the movie.
Firstly, I don’t think they’re going to kill off Miles’ dad. I think that the story’s really pointing in the direction of Miles being proven right. It’s all about how the other Spiderpeople not believing in another way to be a Spiderperson — even though their whole thing is being different types of Spiderpeople, but I digress — and having Miles prove them wrong. It’s about the Spiderpeople learning from Miles, like how Peter B. Parker learns from him in Into the Spiderverse, like how Spider-Byte (Margo) lets Miles go home in this movie.
Across the Spiderverse also talks a lot about Miles defining his own story, his story as a Spiderperson that was never meant to be there, his story as a student, as a child of his parents. I think it would just make way more sense for part of his defining of his own story and people learning from him would be for him to be able to find away to avert some canon events.
Secondly, I think that the canon events and the attitude surrounding it from the other Spiderpeople is reminiscent of the idea that trauma happens “for a reason.” That it makes one grow into the person they are today, and sure, trauma affects people. Trauma might make someone nicer or able to empathise with people going through similar things as they are — as seen in the scene where the members of the Spider Gang comfort Miles about Uncle Aaron’s death in the first movie — but this doesn’t mean it’s good that they’ve all watched people they care about die, and doesn’t mean that it’s the only thing that made them a good Spiderperson.
Bringing it back to the first point, I think that Beyond the Spiderverse is going to be about how, yeah, bad things happen, bad things beyond one’s control happen, but this doesn’t mean that bad things have to happen, and it doesn’t mean it happened for a reason.
