Ahhhh gosh everything is so cute but also so well thought through. I work at a preschool and as it is a bane of my existence I am wondering who is best and who is worst at managing germs?
Ooh! Thank you so much for the work that you do! Managing germs is such a chore! (Especially with it being respiratory illness season!) We hope that you and your class are staying as healthy as you can.
Here's a sort of graph illustrating who is best at managing germs (we considered classroom cleaning, hand washing, gargling, and tooth brushing skills).

you don't have to ofc, but i heard you're making a video essay about the wicked movie? will that still continue or???
the short answer is yes. the slightly longer answer is: yes, and keep in mind that:
YouTube is not my job and never will be.
Creating videos take time, especially in the way I do them.
It also didn't help that I had to spend the last week in bed due to the flu (while I had planned to spend the weekend editing a ton).
I'm kind of glad you asked me this question anon, bc i've wanted to talk about this for ages. so let me explain my process under the cut (warning: boring ramblings).
I don't think people quite understand how much time I spend on my projects. It's just that they are spread across multiple platforms and I don't really announce them until there's something to be announced. Some people just write fanfics or just have a gaming channel.
My brilliant mind decided I should write fanfics, have a video essay channel and a gaming channel!
Because fuck free time, I suppose? So I already am juggling between three projects at all times. And all these are my hobbies and I very desperately want them to stay hobbies.
Which always leads to an interesting field of tension, because everything needs to be quick, quick, quick and NOW and everything is supposed to be "hustle" these days. Do your hobbies and make a buck in the process!
But I firmly want to be against that and say: no. a hobby should cost you money, because the value is in the joy it provides you.
And that might seem hypocritical, because I've begun to put ads on my videos, but that has two reason:
YouTube puts ads on them regardless. Might as well make 100 dollars a year off of my work.
I actually tried to do the "no ads" on my videos. YouTube then goes on to not recommend my videos. And I do not have the audience to get views on it anyway. Nope. My videos just turn to oblivion.
At least now I can decide where to put an ad and when not (and YouTube is aggressive with this btw, because if it's up to YouTube, you're getting an ad every 2-5 minutes).
ANYWAY, back to video making. Like I said, my way of video making is incredibly time consuming.
Besides wanting YouTube to stay a hobby, I also do not show my face. Ever. All the long hour content you watch? Probably a person talking to a camera (talking head).
Every now and then they throw up a graph or a still image. It's the least time consuming way to produce a video, for sure.
I do none of that. Every single thing you see on screen, I had to select and edit myself. You only hear my voice. Everything else on screen I had to put together myself.
So each minute you watch takes me roughly an hour to edit. And that's just editing. I didn't even mention writing the script, recording (and re-recording) and hunting down royalty-free music that fits the topic.
My new Wicked video is an hour long. So we're looking at at least 60 hours of editing. Adding everything else to it, that's 100 hours for 1 video. 100 hours I have to conjure up between working hours and chores and life stuff and a little important thing called free time.
And yes, I could not bother as much with editing and just... let an image stay on screen for a minute.
But I don't want to do that. Part of why I never want YouTube to be my job is I don't want to have to just put videos out just so I can make rent!!!
As long as YouTube stays my hobby, as long as I'm not doing it for the money, I can focus on putting quality upfront. Because I know a lot of small creators who have to put out the video, even if it feels halfbaked, bc that's what it means to be financially tied to an algorithm (and why I never want that for myself!)
That's how you get "reading reddit comments" videos. There's no substance to it at all, because there's no time to get to it.
I don't want that for my videos and therefore I always want to take my time making videos. I want them to be polished and most of all, *I* want to be proud of the videos I make.
So yes, it's a continuous process. I'm also in the process of writing a script for a gaming channel video, and a new chapter for my multiverse fic and oh also working on a massive video for my video essay channel. And then I have like 10 other projects that are in my backlog, waiting to be released and to be worked on.
That's right. I have a queue for my hobbies. Fuck me. That's depressing. I'm pretty much never not working on my projects. You just don't get to see it, because I don't try to monetize the shit out of it.
It'll come when it comes. Same for Wickedly Queer part II. Relax. I'm just an individual with a hobby. Not a corporation.

Who Am I?
Who am I if not the one to fly?
Who am I if not the one to fight?
Who am I if not the one to build?
Who am I if not the one to try?
Who am I?
Time is an illusion to those like me.
An unidentified being.
I have a face
But I cannot comprehend it.
My reflection is blurred.
I scream at the mirror.
Begging it to clear.
But with the sounds of my agony reflecting,
All it can do is shatter.
The glass rebounds toward me.
Digging into my skin as a million pieces.
The droplets of blood race down my limbs.
But I simply ignore it,
Ready to repeat another day.
Love is empty.
Hate is too.
The only thing emptier
Is the inability to feel both.
My heart cannot breath
As my brain never stops.
My hands never falter.
My work never ends.
Thirteen
Eighteen
Twenty
Thirty-five
The age does not matter.
The papers
The graphs
The projects
The chores
They consume the very essence of my being.
From nightfall to daybreak.
Every second.
Every hour.
I have known nothing else.
So I must fly.
I must fight.
I must build.
I must try.
If not that, then what else am I worth?

Despite knowing better, I had given myself a deadline. Today. A big project that I've been working on for months and needs to be Finished already, thank you very much. It's all going well, I think I'll get it done and then ... I get lost in some very very specific sauce.
My therapist is in my ear as I slowly dig myself a deeper pit. Perfectionism, the bane of my existence. Well, one of them. It's at the origin of this particular time-lapse. I want to be Accurate and Complete. Before I know it, I'm covered in mathematics, percentages, statistics, graphs. I become very intimate with a graphics editor, discover functions and shortcuts that were a still a mystery to me three hours ago.
It's almost done when I realise it's wrong. Not inherently but vaguely, marginally, circumstantially. So I delete the work. Start again. It's all or nothing. It's a chore, a mountain, a this-and-then-that-and-then-thus-and-then-so, a finish line somewhere but not visible, not yet.
Then it is Done. I copy, I paste. Then I have something to eat. I've already decided, this deadline today, yeah, will be for tomorrow or the day after that. Time to relax and then go to bed. And then. My brain. Just realises. Out of nowhere. There's something not right. I check and my brain is - of course, flawlessly, inevitably - correct, for fuck's sake. It's fine, I fix. Re-copy, re-paste.
And I kid you not, this exact same thing happens as I am writing this post. So I've just, a minute ago, gone back into the graphics editor. A-g-a-i-n. I do the thing. I copy. I paste. Now, now, now it must be right. Please let it be so. But for all I know, my perfectionism-soaked brain will see it tomorrow and go, "Wait a minute ..."

Bullet journal week 1
Said I was gonna keep a bullet journal. So i doing it. Gonna update it weekly here so that I hopefully keep on it. With some commentary.
Thing i am gonna give it a special tag so people can block of if they want.
Well here we go
Weather and rate my day. Spend the week on vacation at my grandma's so great week. Just meh today cause leaving and card ride.
And yes snow today. At my grandma's when we left. Then nothing for the entire car ride through the country and then snow again back home. Really funny
Not touch to add to this one. Quizy is probably spelled wrong. But just means feeling slightly Blegh in general. Today mostly cause I get car sick which sucks
Mood. Like i said spend with family just all around good until I had to leave
Not much to say about sleep. Just curious how it's gonna look when I get back to work. Definitely need to find another way for the fanfic reading graph for next month
Steps low, but I am on break and it was raining. So I expected it. As well as chores. It's my grandma's house and she has somehow done the chores before you even get the time to over.
But hobby's through the roof who would have guessed XD
(I didn't finish 3 first draft, 1 drawing, started 2 other ones and worked on my crochet blanket sssh)
Writing highlights was easy with the fun week. Of all the things I doodled the only one I got no explanations for is the snail xd.
Achievement was also easy with how much fun projects I got done. Gonna be interesting how that is gonna go when work starts + added some goals
And finally. Coloured one bottle on the hobby shelf for finishing my Kustard drawing. I'll link to it later

Why we need masks for all
Okay, I am going to put myself out here: we need masks for all. If you live in a country that doesn’t have widespread use of masks in public, this one is for you.
Here is a graph of coronavirus trajectories by country. All those countries in blue have widespread public use of masks, in addition to other measures.
Obviously I am not basing all of this on a few countries that have managed to slow the spread. Here is a link to a summary of 33 scientific papers that show that masks (even handmade ones, we’ll get to that) reduce spread of infection for the general population. Many of these studies are themselves meta-analyses of data. The evidence is mounting that public mask usage is an important strategy to reduce COVID-19 transmission. I want to highlight this paper in particular which modeled that public mask usage could slow or even stop the spread of an influenza pandemic.
(The CDC and WHO still maintain that healthy people should not wear masks. Preserving them for healthcare workers is important, but that is a separate question from whether they work or not. It seems likely from the evidence presented above that they do help at least somewhat)
Of course, there is a nationwide shortage of masks in most countries. Medical grade masks must be reserved for healthcare workers (if you have some, look for local ways to donate them, many hospitals are accepting donations). So where do we get the masks for the public? We follow the lead of the Czech Republic and Taiwan and make our own. Here is a great summary of how the Czech Republic went from 0 to 100% public mask usage, in less than two weeks.
A person makes masks and a “mask tree” where neighbors could donate handmade masks to others. Note that masks (or anything really) can be effectively sterilized by heating above 70C (158F) either in the oven for paper masks or using regular cycle in your washer and dryer for cloth masks.
Studies have shown even basic household materials like t-shirts can be effective at blocking droplets that contain viruses.
Are they as good as n95 respirators? No. But outside of certain medical procedures, the disease mainly spreads through droplets, and these homemade masks are still pretty good (though not perfect) at blocking those. This goes both ways: the masks provide a layer of protection to protect you, but ALSO contain a lot of the droplets you could be spreading. Some people with the disease don’t have any symptoms at all, so wearing masks is also important to reduce the chance of infecting others.
Masks, like social distancing, don’t have to be 100% effective in order to help flatten the curve.
Here is a model from the Seattle area, which shows how small changes in social contacts can effect total case numbers. You can see that even reducing contacts 25% has a profound effect on case numbers after a few weeks. The same thing would be true if wearing masks reduced transmissions by just 25%.
I want to point out that as long as you don’t take risks you wouldn’t take otherwise and keep your hands off the mask, there is very little risk to doing this now as we wait for further scientific evidence. And the evidence is mounting that simple masks reduce risk and slow spread.
In the Czech republic, they went from no one wearing masks to 100% (it is now mandatory in public) in about 10 days. While the mandatory order to cover your mouth and nose is only a week old, they have seen a slower growth of cases than the rest of Europe despite lots of testing.
Basic masks can be made with just a t-shirt and scissors, no sewing required. This video shows you how, just wear your mask higher on your face than this guy. (Video is changed from original post to one that doesn’t require Facebook login)
youtube
And a few more tutorials
DIY facemask with filter pocket from Maker’s Habitat (video)
Facemask with adjustable wire and filter pocket from Easy2Sew (video)
Craft Passion Face Mask Pattern (pattern & instructions)
A Dr Explains how to make a facemask from a HEPA filter (video)
Simple mask that can be made with a sewing machine, from Craft Passion
If you get good at making homemade masks, especially the ones with HEPA filters, some hospitals are now accepting donations of homemade masks as well. Check to see what is going on in your local area.
If the papers cited above are correct, wearing a mask now when you need to leave the house for essential chores will reduce the time it takes to bring our cases down, and public use of masks could be invaluable in keeping cases low when people start to go back to work.
We can change our culture from stigmatizing masks to expecting people wear them. It happened in the Czech Republic in less than two weeks. We can do it too.
If you have the time, please watch this video. It was the thing that really made all of this click for me, and it has a ton of great information. Here is a shorter video from the Czech youtuber who started the movement in his country which I also recommend watching & sharing.
Please reblog & add resouces, tutorials, or mask selfies! There are three main things you can do to help spread the word and normalize mask wearing: 1) share videos & other information on the topic; 2) take a selfie of you wearing a home-made mask; 3) spread the message, with hashtag #masks4all.

DAY 4826
Jalsa, Mumbai May 15/16, 2021 Sat/Sun 12:29 AM
The Gods are angered .. CoViD continues but the efforts are coming in and the graphs at some places are beginning to show some stability, though not completely out of the woods ..
Cyclone Tauktae in the Arabian Sea intensifies along the Western Coasts of India .. from the South moving up .. the effects of its arrival have begun here in Mumbai with rain as I write .. the preparations for the monsoon rain sheds had just begun so the vulnerability of leaks , is there and the dealing with rain leakages about is a concern .. we try to make some make shift arrangements .. but they are weak and not entirely protective ..
The severity of the monsoons as you all know is massive and all buildings and locations become most vulnerable during those 3-4 months of its presence ..
The JVPD Scheme is a low lying area and flooding is most imminent .. so ..
The word ‘tauktae’ .. the naming of storms cyclones typhoons et all are taken up and suggested by the countries in the region and this name has been given by Myanmar , erstwhile Burma , which is the name of a ‘vocal lizard’ ..
The work though on the care fronts continues and happily I was able to deliver the first lot of 10 ventilators to the desired locations .. the Municipal Corporation of the City , and 3 Hospitals and one clinic .. the balance 10 that I have ordered should be in in a few days and they too shall be distributed to care centres and Hospitals in dire need ..
6 were sent to the BMC, under the request of its Commissioner Mr Iqbal Singh Chahal, who has done great innovative work in controlling the spread of the virus in the City, by bringing down the numbers .. the ventilators were asked to be directed to his Addl., Com., Mr Chore, who then directed it to ms Shashibala, the lady from the Comm., office looking after deliveries , who then directed us to send it to the Andheri Sports Complex to Mr Raju Palkar, who has received them and the distribution shall be under the discretion of BMC, looking at the various needs ..
I shall be requesting the BMC to let me have a report on the delivery, the setting up and the functioning of these machines at the allocated locations, so we can keep a record of its proper usage ..
The other 4 have been delivered to Hospitals - Sion Hospital along with some accessories that they needed to help in the detection process in these times ; Nair Hospital ; Kaleskar Hospital and the Jewel Nursing Home ..
This is no way a reflection or an indication , that these Hospitals do not have facilities of their own, they do, but in extenuating circumstances, such as what we are facing, every drop counts ..
The first consignment of the 50 Oxygen Concentrators ordered and bought by me from Poland should be on a plane as I write, and shall be landing in Delhi by 6 am tomorrow morning, on the Polish Airline LOT .. flight WAW/DEL /LO 1071 .. these shall be cleared by the Gurudwara Committee where I have donated in the building of the 400 bed facility and which was inaugurated the other day .. 300 functional immediately and the balance 100 in due time .. and the O2 concentrators shall also be donated to this facility for their discretionary use.
vimeo
These are the 10 litre concentrators, but research from my office informs me that the 5 litre ones are also acceptable and in greater demand .. so I have bought another 50 oxygen concentrators today of the 5 litre capacity, and hopefully they should be despatched to us in a few days .. these shall be distributed to the needy facilities in Mumbai ..
My gratitude and gracious thanks to several people in the fructification of this delivery - The Govt.of Poland, the Mayor of Wroclaw, Mr Jacek Sutryk , the Indian Ambassador Mr Namgyal, and the Indian Consul Mr Johri for most generously helping in easing the logistics of transporting it over to India.
The 25 bedded Care Centre that I had donated for to be put up in a School in Juhu is happily all ready .. the facilities are all in place .. and just today the relevant OC’s have beem obtained from the BMC and the Fire Brigade .. just one more permission is due to come tomorrow and with that the facility shall be ready to operate by Tuesday or Wednesday .. this is for the really needy and those that cannot afford the expenses required for their treatment ..
...👆🏾 the 25 bedder facility .. beds , store room , numbering of beds in process .. all oxygen piping etc., all done ..
And the Diagnostic Centre that I donated to for the Bangla Sahib Centre for the needy at free to very low affordable rates is all set and the MRI machine and some other ancillaries that I bought for them, all supplied and ready for operation ..
This 👇🏿 is the lay out of the Centre :
.. there shall be a dedication of course .. but details of that later ..
There is always a sense of satisfaction on seeing your efforts at giving to the needy .. to those in distress .. to them that have lost their jobs due to the non functional-ability of their work professions .. those on the daily wages .. those who’s production films have been stopped because no shootings are allowed .. those who had bet their last Rupee on the completion of a film or a web series they were working on and getting paid ..
I give wherever I can .. my means are extremely limited .. it may not seem so , but they are .. somehow by the grace of the Almighty they come to me .. I have not made any effort to collect them through campaigns or donations to a cause that I may have instituted .. I just feel asking someone for funds is embarrassing for me .. yes there have been events in the past where the voice is for contributing, but I feel uncomfortable to ask , to contribute .. I may have partaken in the event as a voice over, but never directly asked to give or contribute .. and if there have been such unseen or unknown incidents then I seek forgiveness ..
I have, not out of seeking praise, given descriptions of the work done this time, but just to assure all, of the delivery and the visuals of where the funds have been used and to what avail .. that they are not just blank promises ..
There have been many such campaigns and events where the organisers have collected funds for most worthy causes .. and that is most laudable .. but with all due respect and modesty, at times the amount that I have personally individually donated, matches the funds collected out of the campaigns ..
I did not ask .. I gave ..
This has probably been a most un endearing post for the Blog .. and I do apologise for that .. for one that has ever promulgated a desire to be silent and do my work, I have crossed my own LOC - the Line of Control ..
It has come about through incessant cries from many to SPEAK .. but speak is not the desired element according to me in these times .. and the less said on this the better ..
ek chup sau sukh .. एक चुप सौ सुख
AND .. I really must stop .. before my own words get thrown back at me :
“a sophisticated rhetorician intoxicated by the exuberance of his own verbosity”
BECAUSE ..
“the whole country of the system is juxtapositioned by the haemoglobin in the atmosphere”
GN ..

Reading Goals 2022--
It’s the end of the year and it’s about time we made some goals for the new year. I’m not going into 2022 with the mindset of “New Year, New Me” because--let’s all be real here--we’re all going to lean back on who we are as a person come February or later in the year. But there are some things I want to be more intentional about as we move forward.
1. GoodReads Goal--This is always my first goal for a year. Last year my goal was set at 52 books while knowing good and well that I’d read more. My stretch goals were 78 and then 100 books if I made it that far. I ended up reading over 165 books and it was just too much. I felt the pressure to constantly be reading so I would have something to talk about on the podcast. So instead of setting a baseline goal with stretch goals I decided to make it more pointed. My goal is to read between 52 and 104 books this next year. I think putting a top goal is going to make a big difference.
2. Storygraph--Speaking of GoodReads, I plan on trying out story graph in the new year. I first heard about it this year but wanted to wait until the new year to actually give it a shot. I’ll still be using GoodReads while I workout the differences between the two.
3. Reviews/Book Buying--These goals are staying the same as last year. I’ll review any new to me books while not reviewing any books I reread. As for book buying, I like the rule of only buying books to continue series I’m reading and books that are brand new releases. I do need to expand that a little though because of my 40 Books Before 40 project. If I need to pick up a book for that project, I’m also allowed to do that.
4. Make Reading Fun Again--I don’t really know how to quantify this goal but I feel it so much. I had an amazing reading year if we just look at the numbers. Between 165 to 170 books read in a year depending on how next week goes. That’s absolutely amazing. It’s the most I’ve ever read in a year. But I did spend a lot of effort forcing myself to read when I wasn’t in the mood or when I didn’t want to read because I just finished reading a chunky novel. That’s completely on me and my ideas of what I should be reading for the podcast. But I just want to have fun with reading and for reading to stop feeling like such a chore.
Will I be successful? I really hope so. I am pretty stubborn so I know it’s in me somewhere to make these goals happen. What are your goals for the new year?

College tips from an average student
Background: I am fresh graduate with a degree in Accounting. I’m obviously not an A+ student, I’ve experienced failures and I have a short attention span. Here’s how I survived college (even if I got delayed)
How to stay motivated?
- Acknowledge that you cannot always be motivated. Inspirational quotes and simple cheers from you family and friends could help. But I tell you, it doesn’t work all the time.
-Motivation helps you to start studying but the true secret to keep going is DISCIPLINE.
-By developing a routine and strictly following it is a good start to build discipline. I won’t give a specific tip for this since everyone has a different life. You need to figure out this yourself.
For an example:
Majority of the classes I used to have were scheduled in the afternoon, so what I do is that I wake up very early (4-5AM). I eat my breakfast, do minor chores then off to study what I needed to for that day. How do I do it? I read and analyze the concept first. Then, if there’s some problems needed to solve, I try to do it (if I can) Whatever works for me may not work for you. Some people would say their best time to study is in the evening.
How to study when you can’t? (due to personal circumstances)
-There are a lot of factors for this one. It’s probably you have a part-time job, or you have other responsibilities like taking care of a family member, etc.
-The first thing you need to do when you can’t study (or you feel there are a lot of constraint to study) is to ACCEPT THE SITUATION WHERE YOU ARE RIGHT NOW.
-The next thing you need to do is to think of a game plan. For an example, your whole morning to afternoon is occupied for other important things, you should make time in the evening to study.
-Since you have limited time to study, absorb everything you can in class so you can thoroughly focus on topics you don’t know (or those with difficulty) on your free time.
How to study a topic that you don’t like
-Make notes for it, make it pretty and colorful to boost motivation.
-Understand the concept thoroughly. You know you have understand the concept if you can explain it to another person.
-Do concept mapping; whatever it is that will help you: your own formula derived from what is given from the book, making charts, graphs, tables, etc. Story telling the topic helps too.
How to deal with professors
-Treat them the way you want them to treat you.
-They are usually older than you so give them respect.
-Try not to argue with your professors, but if you feel violated tell the higher authority.
-Ask questions if you need to since it’s their job to answer you.
How to deal with classmates
-Distinguish the people who are true to you and those who are fake (who are just using you)
-Remember that college is temporary and majority of the people you’ll meet there are not for long-term.
-Group works are pain in the a** but yeah, don’t be that a**hole group mate.
-Even if friendships are temporary in college, you should engage communications with your colleagues since you need each other to go throughout college.
How to save money in college
-Learn to say no when a friend asks you out to hang out (but don’t do it too often, you might lose friends)
-Get a part-time job if you can
-Bring your own snacks and lunch
-Bring your own water bottle.
-Maximize your resources. Always check first if you really need to buy a specific thing before actually purchasing it.
How to spend your time productively while commuting
-I like to divide my productivity into two parts: For studying and for leisure. Sometimes I study while commuting; I read e-books, power point presentations, PDFs or even watch Youtube videos that are relative to the topics I need to learn.
-Sometimes I do the things I want for leisure during the commute so that when I get home, I won’t be too burnout to study. I listen to music, watch random videos, checking out Tumblr, and whatever floats your boat.
Other tips:
-Don’t drink too much coffee. PLEASE! (Alternatives; but take it in moderation: hot chocolate, milk tea (it works too, but caution: too much sugar), candy, apple)
-Don’t drink energy drinks if your body is not used to it.
-Try to be-friend people from the Accounting department (or whoever processes promissory notes) just in case you can’t pay your tuition on time, they can help you with your promissory note.
-It’s okay to switch classes (if you can) especially if the professor is not that good.
-If the professor allows you to record the lecture, then do it. You can listen to it while commuting or re-writing your notes. (this will help you remember the lessons more)
-BE RESOURCEFUL. The internet is your friend.
I hope these tips will help you. I know it’s not enough but nevertheless, I want to tell you that you can do it! You’ll survive college, don’t worry!

Okay, but doesn't the exact same logic apply backwards as well?
That the people back then with two incomes had nicer homes and more conveniences?
Like, doesn't that argument suggest that even with extreme increases in technology and efficiency, the wealth and earning potential of the family has essentially remained stagnant over the last century, with gains being essentially because of a willingness to spend significantly more of the family time budget* on work?
Especially if you also factor in college graduation rates increasing.
You'd really need to drill way deeper and more granularly to know if this is anything but an artifact, but earlier you showed me a graph Kevin Drum made of family incomes by generation, and the silent generation had smaller incomes than millennials... But not by half, even though millennial families are FAR more likely than silent generation families to have two wage earners, they might not be earning twice as much money.
Like, shouldn't we expect homeownership rates to skyrocket if inflation adjusted income per worker is mostly the same but the proportion of families getting two of those incomes is massively larger?
PS I am aware that "family time budget" is a terrible myth. The silent generation didn't get by on one income by choice but because of significant obstacles towards women participating in the workforce and obstacles towards men staying home and doing household chores. At the same time... there is a family time budget. Childcare becomes significantly more expensive when you are paying for it because both parents are at work rather than relying on the mother to take care of the kids; chores still need to get done, etc.
So, looking at some of what @ghostpalmtechnique and just now @centrally-unplanned have posted about certain measurements of well-being over time,
On the one hand the current discourse about a major generation gap where the boomers got everything handed to them unlike the millennials appears to be exactly the bullshit I thought it was. Kevin Drum says US homeownership rates have remained basically static for the last 40 years. Millennial families are not statistically much more or much less likely to be able to own a home than their parents were.
On the other hand, from roughly the 20s through the 90s there was a precipitous increase in the number of families where both husband and wife earned an income.
If the number of two income households has skyrocketed, should we not expect to see either a precipitous increase in family wealth, or a precipitous decrease in hours worked per worker?
Instead, increases seem fairly modest. If, after inflation, a family with two college educated incomes ends up with essentially the same amount of wealth as a family with one high school educated income earner would have 70 years ago, doesn't that actually suggest that the modern family is in fact doing worse?

so, I’ve been showing people this for a while now, but I was thinking today’d be a good day to expose this wretched creation to the world
it was roughly a month shy of a year ago now when Brian David Gilbert did a video where he rated Mortal Kombat characters on the quality of their cuddling, and I’m nothing if not forever smitten with making silly graphs, so I attempted the same thing with the FE16 gang (although I made this before we had the ashen wolves so bear with me on that one)
(for those who aren’t looking to have one of the best 15 minutes of their lives yet: the vertical axis is for emotional availability, the horizontal axis is for physical risk, and a great cuddler lands as close as possible to the middle.)
under the cut I will provide a brief rationale for each of them (and it will be gently spoilery at times, but nothing very major; if you’ve cleared the pre-timeskip on any route you’re good to go)
The Body Pillows (low emotional availability, low physical risk)
Cyril: look, it’s not that he’s not entirely touch-starved deep down, it’s just that he still is supposed to be handling some chores and you’re interrupting him
Gilbert: the only way anything exciting is going to happen with him is if you lean in close to his ears and start speaking heresy
Hilda: she could hypothetically reach the zenith, y’know! but that would be haaaaaard
Ingrid: the good news is, you’ll probably get a great deal of constructive criticism if you cuddle ingrid. let’s leave it at that
Leonie: come for the cuddle session, stay for the advice on how to get a mattress as good as this one but a lot cheaper. like, if you do choose to stay, that’s what you’re getting
Linhardt: you see the name of this archetype? it was made for linhardt
Marianne: she’s really sorry. she knows you said you wanted to cuddle with her, but she thinks you’ll just have a bad time and get disappointed. she's afraid bad things will happen to you if you touch her
The Michael Ceras (high emotional availability, low physical risk)
Alois: ever wonder what happens to a himbo when he breeds? like, dadification? well, you don’t have to anymore
Anna: imagine someone trying to cuddle you and, every single time they move around or try something, they ask you, “IS THAT THE ONE?”
Ashe: if so little happens as, say, you shift and rustle something and a draft blows in at the same time, he will assume it’s a ghost coming for him. if you really wanted to, you could scare him on purpose. oh god, you’re going to do it, aren’t you. you bastard. you villain. you meanypoop
Ferdinand: “am I, ferdinand von aegir, cuddling you better than edelgard? am I, ferdinand von aegir, cuddling you better than edelgard? am I, ferd”
Ignatz: don’t be fooled into thinking he’ll make a canvas of your body; he gets ideas for sure, but they’re all too scandalous for his shy little hands
Mercedes: why cuddle with her when you could get roughly the same effect by falling asleep to an ASMR compilation
Petra: to have honesty, she tries with a small amount of too much hardness
Raphael: aw, he might be a big guy, but he knows not to hurt you! just don’t expect him to know a lot of other things
Sylvain: as easy as it is to get him into a bed, you’ll really be wishing you’d taken him to a therapist’s couch instead
brian didn’t name these (low emotional availability, high physical risk)
Catherine: those calloused hands might feel nice until the part where they’re abruptly zooming into your face
Edelgard: you know what it means to cuddle with someone who “dislikes losing control”? it’s just not an experience designed around the idea of you having a good time
Felix: watch him find some way to turn this cuddle session into a spar session
Hanneman: cuddling hanneman is all fine and well until he goes for the blood sample extraction
Hubert: he nasty
Jeritza: “why are we cuddling? why won’t you spar with me?”
Lysithea: are you the kind of person who always hoped to die comfortably laid on a bed? if so, there’s exactly one thing that’s going the way you wanted it to in this scenario
Rhea: this isn’t even speculative, it’s empirical. you can, in actual canon, on any route, witness a scene where Rhea cuddles you and it’s fucking terrifying
Shamir: the least you’ll want to do if you find yourself cuddling shamir is to telegraph your every move; if she feels something unexpected, she might assume it’s a bug, and your finger will thus be pest controlled
The Scissorhands (high emotional availability, high physical risk)
Annette: cuddle annette and you will experience things you could never have imagined. things she could never have imagined either, because she didn’t mean for them to happen, and yet, somehow, they did.
Bernadetta: at the very least, she’s the girl to ask if you want the ultimate range of possibility. anything can happen, from her fainting to you fainting
Caspar: don’t mistake this shrimp for an ordinary himbo; given enough provocation he can and will jump into the nearest fight with you still attached to his shoulders
Dimitri: so needy, and yet, so likely to break your everything with so much as a hug... an archetypal scissorhand
Flayn: you’d think it’d be a decent time, besides the fish smell, but if you touch flayn you get vaporized by seteth, that’s just how it goes, it’s a law of nature
Lorenz: say what you will about the man, he’s open to experiments. for better or for worse. ever wonder which new and exciting places you don’t want to find a rose in?
Manuela: if you remember spending the night with manuela, you will wish you didn’t. if you don’t remember spending the night with manuela, you will wish you did
Tier List Rodrigue: look at how close he already is. you will never be apart from him again. it’s too late
The Cuddler’s Zenith (perfectly balanced)
Dedue: the strength to make dimitri look like a twink, and the wisdom to tell you not to eat the weeds -- what’s there not to love?
Dorothea: she’s full of youthful, bisexual energy; one day it will expire into a manuela-esque deposit of issues, but if today’s not that day, best not to wait until tomorrow
Gatekeeper: greetings, professor! nothing to report! nothing to disturb our calm, dreamy night
Seteth: don’t be fooled by all of that stiff hardass act he puts on; he’s stronger than he looks... and even softer
Sothis: hang out with her, and you might feel like you could touch the sky, or rip it a new one
Claude: look, I’m not going to explain this to you. just touch the nearest object around you. do you experience a sensation when you do so? if you do, then you have everything you need in order to understand, all by yourself, that claude is the most sublime cuddler in all of Fódlan and beyond
#Fire Emblem is tagged in this post#Fódlan FE is tagged in this post#alas I can no longer feed my dog any constructive criticism I get for this#so I will have to eat it myself

German Loan-Words In Korean
여러분 안녕하세요!
Yes I am still alive. I have been - and still am - dealing with things in Real Life that take up all my energy (namely depression and anxieties), but I wanted to make this post because it was something I stumbled over. Loan words. Many languages - maybe even all I don’t know - have loan words from other languages. Korean is no exception. We often hear the english ones because most of us know English a whole lot better than other languages unless your native language is another one.
As you may know I’m German. So when I stumbled over two words that sounded very familiar to me - because they were pretty much German but with Korean pronunciation - I had to look up more German loan words and found a page in the wiktionary. So I wanted to share these words with you from the perspective of a German.
Many of these are chemical elements or city names, but also has some that are not, I will keep them all in though, just to be complete.
Let’s go! 가자!
ㄱ
가톨릭 - Catholicism - German: Katholik

ㄴ
나치 - Nazi - German: Nazi
나트륨 - sodium - German: Natrium - chemical element
노이로제 - neurosis - German: Neurose
ㄷ
도이췰란드 - Germany - German: Deutschland - This seems to be obsolete in South Korea, they now use 독일 but according to the wiktionary it’s still used in North Korea
ㄹ
뢴트겐 - X-Ray - German: Röntgen
루페 - Magnifying glass - German: Lupe
리히텐슈타인 - Liechtenstein - German: Liechtenstein - A country in Europe
ㅁ
망간 - manganese - German: Mangan - chemical element
뮌헨 - Munich - German: München - City in Germany.
메스 - scalpel - German: Messer (Messer is the word for knife) - This is one noted as being dutch in origin but as it is so similar to the German word I am including it
ㅂ

베를린 - Berlin - German: Berlin - Capital of Germany
벤졸 - benzene - German: Benzol - chemical compound

So if you are German or know some German maybe these can help you to remember these words more easily. While not all of them will be useful in everyday life, some may be. And if you wonder if Korean has any words from your language in their vocabulary, check out this page.
Thank you all for still being here and learning with me, even if I am quiet for a while. More coming soon I hope! :)
Until then. Stay awesome! 화이팅
