Y’know, considering all the mass-adoption and assimilation Mandalore has done, Mando’a probably has some of the craziest differences between regional dialects.
You will NEVER be able to convince me that clan Wren and clan Vizsla speak the same Mando’a. They probably have an easier time communicating with each other in Basic than their native language.
Just an absolute clusterfuck of a language, the Romans would pity them.

What if a grumpy, veterinarian Logan has to do a checkup on one of his favourite patients, Mary Puppins, and finally gets to meet her papa for the first time, yours truly, Wade Wilson??!
Like... imagine everyone but Wade, has taken Mary Puppins to her regular vet visits or just to the vet in general (he's a merc ofc the schedule gets tighter out of nowhere and he can't possibly move stuff around, money doesn't buy his very expensive squishmallows collection ) but now Wade has to be the responsible owner he is and do it himself (not Peter, not Vanessa, hell not even Blind Al). Fvck whatever job he has landed this week, dogpool's health is more important, goddamn it!
Of course once there, he's greeted by the receptionist…the very colourful and ever so charming Ellie (NTW), and then Logan's adorable assistant, Yukio, who recognises Mary instantly, tells Wade to follow her to the exam room so they can wait for the doctor there.
And well, once Wade sees this Dr. Howlett, who takes his sweet time in appearing by the way…rude... Wade swears he'll unalive everyone and then himself for not having the curtesy of telling him how Hugh "Big T*ts"Jackman hot his dog's vet is.

This came up on youtube so I was able to relisten and confirm without having to replay the game- Nanami, who famously did not know the english word cow and so did not know that a cowbell is a bell for cows, knows the English word "lesbian". This implies so much.

today's attempted Coptic translation for a project: "I want his heart"
When using a verb, you use a prefix (ti-) instead of the independent "I" (anok). There are two verbs that can mean "want". "Ouōsh" means to desire or wish for, even to love, something, which is fine to use here- but a bit soft. You can use "ouōsh" to refer to the desire you have for a soda, or for something more serious. The other is "kyrōh", which is more desperate. "Kyrōh" is you NEED something. It refers to being in need, starving, impoverished. If you "ouōsh" someone's heart, you don't necessarily need it, even though it'd make you happy. If you "kyrōh" someone's heart, you'll die without it. You're down bad, you're begging underneath their bedroom window. So, I would translate this first half as "tikyrōh".
The second half is much simpler- the masculine prefix for a masculine noun here is "pef" and heart is "het". Interestingly, "het" can refer to both the heart and the mind- which isn't surprising if you have some familiarity with the Pharaonic religion. Certain ideas from then carried on into Coptic, even as that religion became obsolete- there's even Coptic literature that adapts "the weighing of the heart" in to a Christian context! Similarly, you can say someone is "double hearted/minded" to refer to them being conflicted. A "man/woman of heart" is wise, and someone "small of heart" is inpatient.
So what we get in translation (from what I figure) is "Tikyrōh pefhet". ϯϭⲣⲱϩ ⲡⲉϥϩⲏⲧ.
@feluka any thoughts on how I did?

what's bóbita ? because you use that frequently
like my first reflex was to search it on google and what came up is Spanish, so i'm like, okay maybe you don't mean "little silly one" even though it makes a LOT of sense to use that word here so i added "Hungarian" to my search which made me even more confused because two things came up; my dear and love Wiktionary who said that it's linked to fucking bird or plants and this fucker
Tumblr media
and like, i'm there, watching a children's song (that's great to be honest), and the only conclusion i have is that y'all saw a word in Spanish, thought "wow it's really fucking cool" and used it ???? which, totally valid, every language goes and looks around and takes words that think it's cool and uses it, but Spanish ?????
spanish hater here i got forced to learn spanish for seven years and i can only say my name and insult someone
hdhdhshdtdttszs oh this is amazing, didnt know bóbita meant that in spanish 💞
yes it is in a children's song (originally a poem by weöres sándor) but it is also a legit valid name you can give to a girl, because of this very poem. the first verse of the poem goes like "bóbita, bóbita is dancing / angels are sitting around her / armies of frogs are playing the flute / armies of locusts are playing the violin." it is a very popular work that most hungarian kids are familiar with.
and i use it a lot bc that's my dear mutual @g0om's chosen name 😊

I prefer “Mary and John were normal people” so so so SO much more, however,
Time traveling Dick Grayson: I kinda… don’t join the family business? I mean I still use everything you taught me! Just for vigilantism instead?
Mary: I’m… not sure I’m surprised or not
Dick: really?
Mary: well… you always did love Robin Hood. I should have known you would try your hand at the whole “steal from the rich, give to the poor thing.” I mean, you are my son after all.
Dick: um.
Mary: you stick it to the man. Right, Dick?
Dick: uhh well you see-
John: it’s okay sweetheart, we support you as long as you’re happy, right dear?
Mary: oh of course I am! I would still love you even if you became… oh I don’t know what, John help me out
John: a walking corpse enslaved to the bourgeoisie whom’s every emotion and individuality has been torn away leaving nothing but a shell who knows only violence and obedience
Mary: right- what?
Dick: yeah I’ve been meaning to ask-
John: -about Aunt Harriet? Because I’ve been wanting to ask about what Aunt Harriet’s been up to!

I am always thinking about Brennan's comment in the latest WBN fireside, about how a lot of GM word choices in their descriptions at least are intended to be evocative and not literal (for more context see Taylor Moore, sound designer and editor, despairing here) and I've made a similar argument in the past about accents - that an RP accent, for example, isn't specifically intended to mean "all people who have this are from the same place" but rather "all people who have this are of a certain class and education level."
With that said, with the names "Caeluma" and "Vaterra" and their clear Latin roots (and, frankly, the use of "Imperium" rather than "Empire") Matt could simply be evoking antiquity and, well, empire; but this could also indicate that at one point the lingua franca of Ruidus was closer to that of Aeorian (Latinate) than Common (modern English), either because of a shared history from when Ruidus was taken from Exandria, or because those were the dreams they were experiencing. (For that matter - was Aeorian, or a precursor, once the equivalent of Common on Exandria?)

Hiyaw and Himik, the twin deities of noise and silence, of movement and stillness, of action and contemplation.
The church of Taw (from the root word for volumen/ strength of voice), has a dual structure to mirror its deities. Clerics choose to walk either the path of silence - the most radical followers dedicate themselves to a vow of complete silence and contemplation, retreating to monasteries in the most remote regions- or the path of noise - the order dedicated to the service of the church and its followers outside of the monasteries. The central principle of the religion is the duality and balance between the two deities' domains. The silent order serves to balance out the order of noise, to be the stillness to their movement, the deliberation to their action and vice versa. The religion is a relatively small but ancient one, with many devotees among musicians, poets and performers and a great emphasis on ceremony and the performance of rituals that combine the texts of Hiyaw and Himik.
(did i just spend the last two days thinking about making an entire fake religion complete with a clerical structure for my fh sona? yes. did i bastardise the filipino words like "scream" and "quiet" to find matching names for them? also yes.)

Hey all! I'm doin a tshirt fundraiser that will run until Oct 9, 2024! The words on the shirt translate to "Happy Halloween" from the language Sm'alagyax, the Tsimshian language. I drew the pumpkin myself and will not be using this design on my redbubble, so if you like it and can afford it, go ahead and get a shirt! You'll be able to find the shirt at: https://www.customink.com/fundraising/halloween-tshirt-fundraiser
Thank you, and reblogs are appreciated!

Thinking about how Jamie’s general vocabulary and grasp of idiom has improved, and my favourite imagined scenario to explain this is Sam giving Jamie book recommendations, and Jamie texting Sam his reactions as if it’s a soap opera.
