Homeschool Advice Part 8 | Stay Engaged
Once again, this advice is for all parents, not just homeschoolers. Whether your kids are never out of your sight or you hardly see them; whether they receive their schooling directly from you, from a public school, private school, or a hybrid; literally no matter what is going on in your life with children, the advice is the same: stay engaged. I know firsthand how tempting it can be to zone…

please ask God to give me strength!
I’m an early childhood education major on a gap year because all of my professors argued FOR reading books to children (ages newborn - 4) about homosexuality, children medically transitioning, non-binary, drag queens, and other completely inappropriate things in the classroom. When I asked one of my professors on this, she yelled in front of the entire class that “we should not let Christian values influence our teaching”, and said I was homophobic. That’s not true at all, one of my students (4y.o.) is a literal angel and he has two moms!
Queer indoctrination in early childhood education is 100% real, at least in liberal states, and it looks mandatory at this point. I’m scared for my future daughter because I don’t want to send her to a school where she learns about puberty blockers before her ABCs. I can’t homeschool her either, I don’t have the financial luxury :(
I hope other teachers find courage and speak out about this mandated indoctrination, because it breaks my heart
Of course 🖤 and yeah, all of this is scary. And it's so dumb for them to say that they "can't let Christian values" influence education when I've seen so many nonchristian and LGBT people say they don't want this either. Not teaching toddlers about sexuality is not a Christian value, it's common sense

We dedicated little Bethany back to the Lord! My parents managed to make it for the dedication service, and Aaron Sr even brought up my dad to give a small charge to all the parents dedicating their children that day. Since we're blessed to have so many children being born into our church, we dedication services happen every 3 months. With our travels and various schedule clashes, little Beth was 6 months when we put our names in for it. We aim to do it for all our kids before their first birthday so that we have ample time to plan for it, instead of being under time constraints.

My parents love being grandparents, and my kids are so blessed to have such godly, loving grandparents that are dedicated to nurturing their grandchildren to live for the Lord and give him glory in all they do - like I did. It's a blessing to have them here with us, my grandparents went to heaven when I was a child so our time with them was short, but my kids will (Lord willing) grow up with their grandparents there for loving direction. My parents always said that a great benefit to marrying and having children young is that by the time they're getting married and having kids of their own, you're still young. If Noah were to get married at 20/21 like his father and I did, Mason and I will be in our forties! We'll still have kids at home (maybe even more than we currently have now) and will still be actively parenting, but we'd hopefully get grandbabies when we're still young enough to run after them!

Molly is just about ready to pop! Her little boy should be joining us any day now and we're all so ecstatic. She's been right there with us when our boys were born, even when she married Elijah and moved away she was always sure to come into town to help whenever she could. She's been cleared for a homebirth, so we've packed her a bag and I've got babysitters in place to come be at the house with Mason and the boys while Angie and I are at Molly's. She's asked us to be part of the birthing team along with her midwife, so we're all praying that things happen safely for mama and baby.

CALLING ALL HEATHENS
I would really like to have a dialogue and maybe form a community with others who are recovering from negative christian church upbringings/experiences. I’m ex fundie, and was abused in the church, was “homeschooled” (not educated), and am far along in my recovery journey but still working.
Anyone, even if that doesn’t resemble your exact experience, ask me a question or share your story! Let’s start a dialogue. Anons are on if you need to stay stealth.

being a children's librarian is fun because you get to look forward to not having to answer questions about the printer or the mysteries of google drive like adult services does, but then you get asked questions about phonics and AR reading levels and you realize that there are mysteries the depths of which you can never fathom but you have to try because there is a very stressed parent right in front of you

I just binged like....twelve episodes of Monstrous Agonies and...
A) I am in love with the V.A. (their voice is just beautiful; think WTNV Cecil with his sleep-inducing voice but more on the soothing/calming side) B) Advice column radio segment for the creature community/people of the night (as they call themselves) is SO brilliant (it's kind of fun to go "hm...not the advice I'd give" and then do a double take as you realise you're forming opinions on the problems of (probably) fictional races). And C) It's SO unexpectedly funny....just off what I've recorded, you have lines like
"which muppet is the sexiest"
"a social klutz with all the grace of a roller-skating donkey"
"if my father wants to take up with some american floozy, then more power to him"
"she does sound rather unfortunately american, but they really can't help it and usually mean well"
and most importantly

Homeschool Advice Part 7 | Read Aloud and Read a Lot
“You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them.” – Ray Bradbury If you do nothing else in your homeschool, teach your children to read. Basic math is also a must, and thinking critically about what they read is equal in importance, but reading itself is an incredible skill that cannot be overstated. Since reading the Bible should be the foundation and…

When I was thirteen (give or take), my speech teacher, we’ll call him “Mr. M,” stood up in front of the class and told us never to announce your weaknesses to the audience. It’s tempting, he said, to say “I’m sorry in advance, I stutter when I’m nervous” or “this is going to be terrible” or “I literally wrote this in my previous class.” It’s tempting, because so many of us have bought into the lie that says that announcing the punch line ahead of time will save us from becoming a joke. All it does, Mr. M said, was give your audience faults to look for and then remember. It creates confirmation bias. It’s giving the audience tomatoes to throw at you. (And this from the teacher who would sit with a pen in his hand and tally up how many times you said “um” so he could announce the exact number when he gave feedback. Mr. M was not fucking around in speech class—he was making orators out of awkward middle schoolers.)
Whenever my insecurities raise their voices to encourage me to slap an apology at the end of a fic chapter or in the card accompanying a handmade gift, I am catapulted back to Mr. M’s eighth grade speech class. I hear him saying, push your shoulders back, get your hands out of your pockets, and—for the love of god—don’t highlight your weaknesses in wavering apologetic self-doubt.
insulting your own work (art or writing or whatever) super openly, especially directly on your work is also insulting everyone who sees and enjoys it. you're essentially calling them a liar or telling them that they have shit taste.
i think abt this a lot (and it helped me stop being an asshole abt my own writing), but i'm especially bitter when it's people who have commission stuff all over. like. you say your stuff is worth buying, but you're calling it awful? do you see what you're saying?
i know it's not always that simple to realize, but still. ghghgh.

DEAR EDUCATIONALLY NEGLECTED HOMESCHOOLERS
I’ve gathered some resources and tips and tricks on self-educating after educational neglect. This is only what I did and what I know helped me. I’m about to graduate college with honors after having no education past the age of 9. I wouldn’t be here without the following. Everything is free, and at/well above the standard for education in the US.
The holy grail: Khan Academy. Nearly every course you could take is available here, in order and by grade level. Their open-source free courses rival some of the college classes I’ve taken. This is your most solid resource.
For inattentive types: Crash Course offers a variety of courses that are snappy, entertaining, and extremely rewarding. They work for my ADHD brain. They also have college prep advice, which is essential if you’re looking to go to higher education with no classroom experience.
To catch up on your reading: There are certain books that you may have read had you gone to school that you’ve missed out on. This list is the most well-rounded and can fill you in on both children’s books and classic novels that are essential or at least extremely helpful to be familiar with. You can find a majority of these easily at a local library (and some for free in PDF form online low key). There are a few higher level classics in here that I’d highly recommend. If it doesn’t work for you, I’d always recommend asking your local librarian.
*BE AWARE* The book list I recommend suggests you read Harry Potter books, and given their transphobic author you may or may not want to read them. If you choose to, I’d highly recommend buying the books secondhand or borrowing from a library to avoid financially supporting a living author with dangerous and damaging views.
TEST, TEST, TEST: Again, Khan Academy is your go-to for this. I don’t personally like standardized testing, but going through SAT and ACT courses was the best way I found to really reveal my gaps so that I could supplement.
Finally: As much as you can, enjoy the process. Education can be thrilling and teach you so much about yourself, and help shape your view of the world. It can get frustrating, but I’d like to encourage you that everyone can learn. No pace is the perfect pace, and your learning style is the right learning style for you. In teaching yourself, be patient, be kind, and indulge in the subjects you really enjoy without neglecting others. You are your teacher. Give yourself what others chose not to.

highlights from the brennan hank interview (aka taking notes on things that i liked or didn't know)
HE STARTED ATTENDING COLLEGE WHEN HE WAS 14?????
immediate jump off topic from hank to ask him about d20 (this happened while fhjy was airing)
"and the greatest project of all, my wonderful family with my wife isabella roland"
bonding over their children
brennan and hank's son both corrected their father's bedtime stories 💀
many elaine lee shoutouts
"his dad met my mom and fell in love" "you did that" "we did that, parent-trapped them"
was pulled out of school in 4th grade for homeschooling because the bullying was so bad....
started a company when they (he and his brother) were fifteen?? called Bootleg Adventures
hank's little awed hiss of "what" to the above piece of information
GOT PART OWNERSHIP OF THE WAYFINDER COMPANY AT 15
"knowledge is something that, when you share it, there's just more. there's no scarcity"
hank staring off into space slightly looking like brennan just blew his mind (we're 11 minutes in)
"we were 14 year old philosophy majors, if you can imagine anything more normal than that"
brennan unable to resist doing fun voices for the people he talks about
he wouldve loved to work at wayfinder full time and said back then hey maybe ill become a famous internet comedian or something and that's how i can help camp. now he's got texts from the staff saying how a bunch of dimension 20 fans have joined and its been a huge boon for them that way 🥺
"it's funny when a really bad plan works. dont make that plan."
"every new community-- is this too sad? no its true" THOSE THINGS ARE NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE
anyway "for every new community i start with the presupposition that someone is going to pick me up and put me in the trash can" 😭
hank sniping him through the duplex door with "[when you do that] you kind of imagine yourself to be the value you're delivering rather than yourself, or that your value is in what you deliver and not who you are" and brennan going 😐 "that's a great point man"
both of them turning to do pained smiles at the camera 😭
"i think the value is in who you are" "that's really sweet i appreciate that" "but i also love that you deliver"
brennan quoting mary oliver
im starting to feel a little called out guys
robert mckee "stories are not about their premises they're about their conclusions"
brennan also staring off into space slightly thinking about what hank said
the REAL college advice brennan is giving is reportedly "put an egg in your ramen" because thats how you stop your eyes from going "matte finish"
shoutout to vanessa's dumplings for keeping this man alive
"i am ozymandias nerd of nerds, gaze upon my banner and despair"
the moment he felt like something changed was walking into C2E2 and seeing that the biggest hanging banner in the convention hall was of fantasy high. or, as brennan put it, "my dumb face"
"my friends moved in with their partners, the apartment i had with them scattered to the wind, the woman i was dating dumped me after three weeks, and i won a bunch of money on Who Wants to Be a Millionare" "wh- what???"
he taught emily, murph, siobhan, and zac how to play dnd 🥺 and was running a home game for lou at the same time
got hired at um, actually because his name was getting around for being a big dork
zac stepped down from troopers and sam liked brennan's character from a previous casting call (tim curry eating pizza) so he brought him in
its very charming the detail with which brennan remembers these important moments in his life
became a full time cast member in the same week he started dating izzy! "hard to beat week gang!"
"they told us they were launching dropout and everyone had to make a show, which, if you're been trying to make a show your whole life, that's like saying 'bad news guys, there's 24 birthday cakes in the break room and everyone has to eat a whole birthday cake'."
brennan was making a document for a market pitch on an actual-play show when he was called into office and THEY pitched HIM the idea of an actual-play show
"i guess i have tumbled through life to end up here ready to do this"
truly like. one of the guys of all time.
"some of the things that didn't make sense about you make more sense now" hank talking indirectly about how amazing he found all the moving parts of mentopolis and now getting to hear about how long and how many time he's done storytelling it makes sense
"yeah its the one skill"
"i wanted to tell stories before i was anything else"
🎉anti-capitalist rant🎉
"people used to say 'is ucb a cult' and i'd say 'in a cult, somebody is making money'"
HIGH FIVE!!!
