hiiii! have you considered releasing tradewinds as a single purchase through a site like gumroad?
Hi anon!
So the reason Tradewinds was shelved and not published like 8 years ago, is because I couldn't find an Aboriginal sensitivity reader willing to read m/m with disturbing themes. I had sensitivity readers for the other side of things (like Matan and his heritage), but I kept either not finding anyone, or the one person I found took my $200 USD deposit and vanished and never spoke to me / responded to any of my emails.
As a result, I was uncomfortable distributing it anywhere broadly, even though I was relatively confident the novel isn't offensive, because I just don't know 100%.
I am a lot more confident releasing it via subscription as an exclusive novel, because the people who pay for subscription are often folks who are a) already used to my style of writing and b) generally know what to expect from me, vs. cold audiences who don't. I'm kind of kicking myself that I didn't realise that Tradewinds would make a great exclusive/paywalled release for subscription, because it means it's only ever going to find a very narrow bandwidth of readers.
Basically if I could release it for single purchase - as basically an ebook - I would have released it like 8 years ago, anon. And the reason I have actually released it this specific way is down to the fact that I'm just not really confident offering it for broader distribution.
That might change one day, if I happen to stumble across a sensitivity reader who is okay with my style of writing, who is reputable + has references (i.e. so I know I won't lose a fair chunk of money in the process, because that burned me pretty badly, not gonna lie). But until then, having Tradewinds be limited is the only way I'm comfortable releasing it at all.
Folks are more than welcome to sign up for one month, download the book (and read any other early access they want) and then leave. They can even just put 'I only wanted one thing and now I have it' in the exit survey so I know what they were there for if they want. Then it's still a single purchase (with some early access extras), and they still access the downloadable file. :)
#asks and answers#tradewinds#merchantverse#tradewinds was shelved not because i think it's a bad book#but because i wasn't comfortable going to broad distribution without a very specific kind of sensitivity reader#it was actually meant to be the series i started publishing with#long before perth shifters existed#and then i realised that through writing a highly diverse cast#i might have actually really hurt the future of the series#and had to shelve the whole thing and all the worldbuilding#i really don't regret tradewinds at all#i like the book and i love the characters#but yeah it was complicated#what i thought would be an 'easy' problem to solve was really difficult in part because#'sensitivity readers' is a very USA concept and certainly was back then#and a lot of the folks i enquired with who did offer sensitivity reading on Aboriginal Australian matters#didn't read m/m or didn't want to read anything problematic / with any disturbing themes#which i can understand#but literally reduced my pool to '0 plus that one person who took $200 USD from me at a time when i had to skip medical appts because of it#i'm sure it would be better now#but i'm also happy to offer a novel to folks who sign up to the patreon / ream account#since that is my main and primary income

ummm tw: existential crisis, existential dread, and anxiety
this is just another rant that leads nowhere 🙃
also i wanted to share this gif set for the comic relief 🦌🐇
I feel like I'm being hurtled toward full adulthood and it's all happening too quickly like can we slow down the speed of it all is making me anxious! yet when I do slow down in these busy times it makes me anxious too... and i just don't know anymore. i can imagine so many scenarios for how the next few years could play out, and for the aspects of it that i can control, i have little clue as to which path to follow. every fork in the road leads to more forks later on and it's all so overwhelming to even attempt to think that far but i also sometimes feel like it's important for me to try to think that far because life is short and i want to have my time here be as fulfilling as possible. and like ofc we all have our preferred dreams and stuff but how do i make time for all of them, i sometimes catastrophize that i won't be able to do it all while enjoying the ride and my soul will grow embittered and/or get crushed (sometimes even now i get a whiff of it), and what do you do when those dreams change and how do you know when to give up or keep going and i have no idea how one should make any these decisions (probably because there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to making these decisions...it probably varies case to case 😮💨)... and what if the values that guide my decisions don't align with the values of those i care about? what if i push things too far? what if that leads to the permanent destruction of my personal life? all this still spirals in my head even though i've made a little progress on the career existential crisis (more on that in a future post maybe?)! and here i was naïvely thinking i would not have nights where i lie awake at 4am feeling worried anymore! (anyway, writing this down reminds me of how useless it is for me to try to think this far and make a 10-year or more plan like i know some people do for themselves...it nearly always turns into a worry spiral and an hour or two of catastrophizing)
...also yes i realize this is very much a first world problem and i'm very fortunate to even have this many choices to make... and i do prefer feeling this way as opposed to feeling stressed about having only one narrow path on which to walk whether i like it or not. i suppose i'm just in the phase of feeling anxious rather than excited for anything now that reading week is almost over and i overestimated how much could get done in a measly week and how much energy i would have and november will be even busier than october... gahhh i just have to believe that in the end we will be fine!!! 😣😣😣😣

I like how the death of literacy is because tumblr users watch kids cartoons and not that we live in a capitalist hellscape where you don't own what you have and curating your internet space to include anything of substance is increasingly inaccessible
#sorry im thinking abt the ppl who post abt this#obviously im biased im the kids show enjoyer im gonna say im not the problem#but like I have to pirate most of the books I read because my library doesn't have much available online and going into town is a bit of#an ordeal not factoring in that ebooks are way more accessible for my dyslexia and brightness sensitivity (and also need to be lying down#most of my day bc. bad back)#and I'm literally IN A HIGHLY WALKABLE ACCESSIBLE TOWN#I'm not defending ppl who r like#wow this real life problem is just like my blorbos#but thats not a kids media exclusive L and more importantly if you want people to read more you gotta make it like. appealing#like u gotta qctually hype up reading but ur so irony poisoned it's always the wrong kind of book or they're not engaging with it correctly#and if they do it exactly like you want but then don't make it their entire personality then clearly they're just doing it for your approval#I think the 2000s going so hard on reading and being a kid who reads that it becomes a special chosen one heroic not like other girls trait#was a mistake bc now a bunch of 20 somethings think that they're single handedly saving their generation from degeneracy#by like calling their peers cringy#this wasn't prompted by anyone btw im just thinking of old posts on here

I'm a highly sentimental being ✨️ it's in my nature as an empath. I'm also a writer. Often times when I give someone a note, it's more than just words to me. It's my heart, poured out onto paper. Otherwise I would've just sent you a text.
That's why when people give me a card, to me that's handpicked with love and intention. Or when they write me a note, no matter how simple the message. It has intent, thought and meaning behind it. So I keep each and every one.

I'm discussing neurodiversity with a friend and she actually suspects she has adhd. I might have all the experience of adhd but who am I to judge right? But the thing is.. she has such strong qualities in area's that are challenging for people with adhd. And I feel like her definition of disorder because she is so balanced and organized in everything she does is on a whole different level. Like she is used to following through in her calculated choices and sticks to her habits more then almost any person I've known and it really sticks out to her when she doesn't. And her definition of I might have adhd is "I've always been dreamy and get distracted by my own thoughts when I'm supposed to be paying attention when someone is talking" Which IS a hallmark of adhd. But I can't feel help but feel.. misunderstood? Because I feel like she underestimates what it means to actually live with adhd. And it's such a fundamental aspects of my life that I know she'd be damn good in masking and overcompensating most adhd symptoms if she had it. I feel a little stupid for letting me bother it, but it still does? Maybe more because she is a close friend of mine.
#adhd#neurodiversity talk#She is highly sensitive and quickly overwhelmed by stimuli and actually has more overlap with common autism symptoms because of her#high sensitivity#and the way she finds comfort in routine but she is a 100% convinced that she doesn't because of the whole idea around “empathy” which is#well.. more or a alexathimia specific thing and wildly misunderstood too#I don't want to feel like a bad person for coming on here to ramble about this tho#Her qualities always made the skills I lack due to adhd so obvious but she always inspired me to do better#and while we have many similarities some of the most stark differences have always been the traits I associate with adhd#personal#or perhaps if someone like her that I look up to because of her level of selfcontrole and organisation that seems to come natural naturally#could have adhd that would make me feel like a failure like I should or could have managed my own symptoms better if I had worked harder#and actually used strategies#but I'm like theres no way right??#this level of selfreflection is pretty confrontational tbh#I also don't want her to feel like something is wrong with her because I know what that feels like#I'm having a bunch of mixed feelings in different directionsbasically#then she was listing a bunch of symptoms that weren't a problem for her like prioritizing tasks and again I was like... ahem so unlikely#you cover a the basics for a full diagnosis#She is on a selfdicovery journey tho and I love her for that. I'm sure it will make sense to her whatever applies when it comes to#neurodiversity#she wants to see a professional too which I think is always a great idea#in the meantime I just want to both support and inform her about what I know about this stuff#like my intention is not to invalidate whatever she suspects which is why I feel rude for having mixed feelings

Opinion Here’s how to get free Paxlovid as many times as you need it
When the public health emergency around covid-19 ended, vaccines and treatments became commercial products, meaning companies could charge for them as they do other pharmaceuticals. Paxlovid, the highly effective antiviral pill that can prevent covid from becoming severe, now has a list price of nearly $1,400 for a five-day treatment course.
Thanks to an innovative agreement between the Biden administration and the drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer, Americans can still access the medication free or at very low cost through a program called Paxcess. The problem is that too few people — including pharmacists — are aware of it.
I learned of Paxcess only after readers wrote that pharmacies were charging them hundreds of dollars — or even the full list price — to fill their Paxlovid prescription. This shouldn’t be happening. A representative from Pfizer, which runs the program, explained to me that patients on Medicare and Medicaid or who are uninsured should get free Paxlovid. They need to sign up by going to paxlovid.iassist.com or by calling 877-219-7225. “We wanted to make enrollment as easy and as quick as possible,” the representative said.
Indeed, the process is straightforward. I clicked through the web form myself, and there are only three sets of information required. Patients first enter their name, date of birth and address. They then input their prescriber’s name and address and select their insurance type.
All this should take less than five minutes and can be done at home or at the pharmacy. A physician or pharmacist can fill it out on behalf of the patient, too. Importantly, this form does not ask for medical history, proof of a positive coronavirus test, income verification, citizenship status or other potentially sensitive and time-consuming information.
But there is one key requirement people need to be aware of: Patients must have a prescription for Paxlovid to start the enrollment process. It is not possible to pre-enroll. (Though, in a sense, people on Medicare or Medicaid are already pre-enrolled.)
Once the questionnaire is complete, the website generates a voucher within seconds. People can print it or email it themselves, and then they can exchange it for a free course of Paxlovid at most pharmacies.
Pfizer’s representative tells me that more than 57,000 pharmacies are contracted to participate in this program, including major chain drugstores such as CVS and Walgreens and large retail chains such as Walmart, Kroger and Costco. For those unable to go in person, a mail-order option is available, too.
The program works a little differently for patients with commercial insurance. Some insurance plans already cover Paxlovid without a co-pay. Anyone who is told there will be a charge should sign up for Paxcess, which would further bring down their co-pay and might even cover the entire cost.
Several readers have attested that Paxcess’s process was fast and seamless. I was also glad to learn that there is basically no limit to the number of times someone could use it. A person who contracts the coronavirus three times in a year could access Paxlovid free or at low cost each time.
Unfortunately, readers informed me of one major glitch: Though the Paxcess voucher is honored when presented, some pharmacies are not offering the program proactively. As a result, many patients are still being charged high co-pays even if they could have gotten the medication at no cost.
This is incredibly frustrating. However, after interviewing multiple people involved in the process, including representatives of major pharmacy chains and Biden administration officials, I believe everyone is sincere in trying to make things right. As we saw in the early days of the coronavirus vaccine rollout, it’s hard to get a new program off the ground. Policies that look good on paper run into multiple barriers during implementation.
Those involved are actively identifying and addressing these problems. For instance, a Walgreens representative explained to me that in addition to educating pharmacists and pharmacy techs about the program, the company learned it also had to make system changes to account for a different workflow. Normally, when pharmacists process a prescription, they inform patients of the co-pay and dispense the medication. But with Paxlovid, the system needs to stop them if there is a co-pay, so they can prompt patients to sign up for Paxcess.
Here is where patients and consumers must take a proactive role. That might not feel fair; after all, if someone is ill, people expect that the system will work to help them. But that’s not our reality. While pharmacies work to fix their system glitches, patients need to be their own best advocates. That means signing up for Paxcess as soon as they receive a Paxlovid prescription and helping spread the word so that others can get the antiviral at little or no cost, too.

Empath Training via Wicked Grounds: Deep Cord Cutting
Hi everyone, I’m back on Tumblr and while my presence is mostly in and out like it is everywhere, I did want to pause and give some insight into my current round of Wicked Grounds workshops.
Since 2017, I have been developing a series of trainings for metaphysical empaths. How I define empath is pretty specific - in my approach, it is a person that mistakes the emotions of others for their own, who also happens to have their emotional energetic body the furthest out from their physical body. This is NOT the only kind of empath out there, but because of my vocation, this is the type of empath I encounter the most, and the one that I myself happen to be.
I consider other psychic perceptions, etc. as coinciding with “empath” but not the same thing as being one. I have already taught my introductory empath trainings live at Wicked Grounds and at Convocation, and I’m expanding my material every year with Wicked Grounds and Golden Apple Metaphysical.
My class series focuses on energy work adjusted for empaths, with additional tweaks made when possible for people who may also have some form of neurodivergence.
The scope is strictly on the energy work side of the metaphysical empath experience.
We are at our third class in the series, Cord Cutting for empaths. Empaths tend to form energetic ties to other people far more easily than those that are not, and rarely does it happen with conscious consent. Because of the frequency and the way those cords form, there are some energy techniques I’ve developed to release that cordage when it digs deeper to the point that the empath mistakes it for their own energy.
You do not need to attend the first two classes to participate in this one. The class I’m featuring here happens on 4/20 (whee!) at 6 pm PST. The ticket link is: https://forbiddentickets.com/events/wicked-grounds/2023-04-20-online-empath-training-level-3
There is a sliding scale from Wicked Grounds to keep it accessible to the community while also offering teachers and the platform reasonable support.
Disclaimer: While aspects of mental health may be discussed in this class, I am not a mental health professional and it is not intended as therapy.
