what is your favorite thing about charles and your favorite thing about erik? separately, as in what you like most about their characters :]

a devious question this one is, my friend!!! it's hard enough for me to explain my thoughts cohesively, but having to pick ONE thing i particularly love is difficult. with characters like charles and erik, theres been so much done with their characters over the decades and so they have so many components to them that make them so interesting and fun to observe. BUT I TRY FOR YOU TODAY. under the cut i kinda ramble and the size of this text box makin me anxious

i think if i were to be simple and broad, what i enjoy most about charles is his determination to help others, even if he isn't really thanked and/or if people don't even like him. ofc, this isn't to say he hasn't done wrong- to be honest, the fact he does wrong/questionable things at times is another aspect of him i really enjoy, maybe because- broadly speaking- he's meant to be altruistic (intent vs outcome and all that). i don't know if that's super exciting to most people, but it is for me

as for erik, my reason for liking him is easier to explain tbh. To Be Simple And Broad, his progression from villain to antihero over the decades has been fun to observe (as much as i have so far anyhow) and analyze. i think to be a bit more specific, him using his rage and pain as justifications for his villainous actions is definitely what compels me the most: hurt people hurt and the sort, an idea i've always found interesting (something something vicious cycles and the like). yet now, he recognizes this wasn't really. A Just Thing To Do and is beginning to change that, which i enjoy

So in Chaldea Sitcom Land, headcanon Pat is more like Billy's long-suffering guidance counselor than his friend, forever scolding him about the Consequences of his Actions, and is one of the few people that can actually make Billy feel contrite about anything. Even if he's ladyfied he's still his historical height of 6'5" and can pick up 5'2" Billy by the scruff of the neck like a misbehaving puppy.

Crank up the angst'n'edge-o-meter a couple notches and Billy's like "You know, I don't hold it against you that you shot me :) Or that you shot my buddies :) I did what I felt I had to do and you did what you felt you had to do :) No hard feelings :)"

And Pat's like "Yes. YES hard feelings. Even if I didn't have any reason to be mad at you before, you murdered two deputies when you broke out of my jail."

I’m sick and tired of Korean webtoons (especially ones marketed for women which is a huge can of worms) not getting the praise they deserve for elevating the webcomic medium out of the fucking water for the amount of insane detail, incredible use of lighting to set tone and mood and Renaissance-esque composition they put into the digital medium

Manhwa artists really utilize the potential of digital comics like no one else fucking does and I’m sick and tired of pretending it’s like. Not an incredible achievement of creativity seen at such a huge and accessible scale before. Like artists are making cinematic, feature quality art that would take 10+ hours to do and they’re doing that for just like. One panel in a 50 page chapter of a 70 chapter series, inevitably to just be scrolled away in one second rather than just be APPRECIATED for what it is

Like these artists are utilizing everything in their arsenal of full colour, photo bashing, 3D assets and every repeatable texture and filter imaginable to effectively paint a scene in a time efficient manner that can only be replicated in this kind of medium compared to something like manga or traditional comics (which are respectable art forms of themselves and I’m not hating on them but they have constraints like everything else)

I just feel like digital art is amazing because of the short cuts you can take to achieve a piece in a quicker way and these artists are SMART and use everything in their arsenal and it’s so fucking admirable and inspiring to see

AND the creative ways they use comic composition for infinite scrolling?? It’s a completely different cinematic language to books that is so new and ever evolving and these artists are literally making a new language of how we consume media digitally through our phones and that should be fucking dissected and torn apart

and also the fact that all these incredible Korean artists (or fucking studios?? Because how the hell would one person be able to do such rich and detailed art) are so unknown and inaccessible to learn anything from them boggles my goddamn mind these people should be fucking rockstars but most just go by aliases when I want to know THEIR NAMES like I don’t give a fuck if it’s a collective of artists they should have a huge fuckin credit page at the end of every chapter so I can get on my fuckinf feet and cheer for them

And the fact that it’s a well known thing of these artists not being paid well makes me so fucking mad I would buy their art books and physical copies in a goddamn HEARTBEAT

it's weird how desktops aren't a thing anymore? right now i'm fighting for my life to get away from USB. fighting for my life to find firewire equipment that's still supported. fighting for my life to find decent serial ports. fighting for my life to find a MIDI interface that doesn't crash unpredictably. fighting for my life to have an uptime of months instead of hours and all the ridiculous crashes the USB subsystem causes. fighting for my life to access storage at the block level without being stuck with my internal drives. fighting for my life for a monitor output that isn't also USB. fighting for my life trying to find any equipment that takes its basic functioning seriously and doesn't railroad me into the worst connection standard to exist.

Fighting for my life trying to find a phone or tablet with a headphone jack. Fighting for my life trying to find a laptop with a cd rom. Fighting for my life trying to get more than one usb port or, god forbid, an hdmi. Fighting for my life trying to find any electronics that haven't been streamlined into flimsy chastity belts with the structural integrity of a sopping sheet of paper which require me to buy 3 extra devices (each with their own separate charging requirements) all because some silicon valley jackass somewhere decided holes were a bad thing.

I fucking hate what the race to the bottom has done to the "official" translations of more than one fucking manga now.

Fucking Kodansha started translating Witch Hat, so the scanlators stopped doing so, but the official version is so fucking lazy.

They aren't even checking if the romanizations of character names read as intended in the target language, let alone fitting the translated vocabulary to the context! You need people on your team that can read intent from the Japanese text AND the English one, because the latter is going to need proofreading! Getting the vibe of the text right of the original version gains nothing if you don't also have someone who can replicate it in the target language! If that someone's the same person that's great but you very much have to have both skillsets on your translation team!!!!

It's perfectly possible to preserve the meaning and style of the original, even to the point where from sentence structure that gets rearranged to preserve a reveal or a metaphor is introduced to the new audience for the first time WITHOUT the text feeling janky in the target language! I've seen it! It used to be the norm before the race to the bottom trend in business got so universal since the mid to late tens! Stop being lazy and give your fucking translators the time and pay to do a good fucking job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I still haven't forgiven what this trend did to Dungeon Meshi and I don't think that grudge is ever going to go away. You could have called it "Dungeon Food," or "Cooking in the Dungeon" and kept the bluntness of the original. You could have spun it up fancily as a kind of title familiar to the audience, and called it "The Chef's Guide to Dungeoneering" or "The Survivalist's Guide to Dungeon Food," or even "Man Versus Dungeon," in a play on Man v Wild. You could have straight up kept the Japanese title and either explained in a translator's note or added a subtitle that repeats the concept in English. Even "Delicious in the Dungeon," while still awkward as all SHIT, still scans as a sentence that makes sense! Why did you go with your actual fucking decision???!?!?!??!!? How hard is "Dungeon Meshi: A Practical Guide to Cooking Monsters?" That took me less than a minute!

If it's worth doing at all in an official capacity, it's worth doing it properly and leveraging your fucking corporate-scale resources to do a better job! Taking advantage of the unspoken agreement that scanlators have to yield to an official translation only to basically undercut them and do a worse job is scummy as all hell! Just fucking pick one of the major scanlator teams and hire them if you're going to cut corners!

Stop lowering the standards of quality stop lowering the standards of quality stop it stop it stop it STOP IT STOP IT!

Like, there's room to argue whether a more literal or more tone-tailored or even a highly creative Ace Attorney-Style translation is most appropriate for a particular work but at least PICK ONE and put in the effort to do that style translation as well as possible! And by ''put in the effort" I mean pay your fucking translators enough that they can take the time to do it right!!!
