I think my take on annie and mitchell's romance is that it doesn't really work for me, but the fault is not with anything about the characters or relationship itself, it easily could have worked, it's more a symptom of how a lot of m/f tv couples are written. before they get romantically interested in each other we see scenes of them hanging out, chatting, enjoying each others' company, backing each other up, caring about what the other is up to, etc., but the second that "romance" switch gets flipped they stop having fun together. it gets real "he was a boy, she was a girl, can I make it anymore obvious"? I know the point is that they're doomed and there's this massive rift of secrecy between them, but we still stop seeing them like each other because we're assumed to accept on principle that they love each other.

hal and alex also suffer from this massively almost right up until the end of s5 where they're finally allowed to laugh at some jokes together, but their initial introduction scenes at the end of s4 feel kind of weird because they're both so awkward and uncomfortable that it's hard to see why they keep seeking each other out for reasons other than maybe "alex desperately wants to have sex under the coalition government and this man happens to be there and vaguely alive."
