I’m really curious what are y’all’s fanfiction and fiction squicks?
I know the word has fallen from super-popular use but I think we need to revitalize it as a term (for a deep-seated distaste or turn-off from certain tropes, writing forms, character types, etc.) What makes you put down a book or close a tab so fast?
#morg rants#Hey‚ OP asked.#Let's see... I don't like it when a character is given the same ''role'' more than ~60% of the time in fanworks#(ie. ''top'' ''sub'' ''pursuer'' etc.)#without a REALLY compelling reason for why that is#(which could be a canon trait‚ or particularly suited to character exploration (ex. trust issues)‚ non-canon but derived#from motifs within the source material‚ character seems like they might be into [whatever]‚ etc.)#This can be mitigated somewhat by author self-awareness#(author wants to fuck/be fucked by the character and is willing to admit it doesn't ''count'' toward the ~60%)#I'd rather you say you thought about it and went for what appealed to you#than have reason to believe you didn't think about it at all#I don't like it when a narrative contrives scenarios in which a marginalized character (usually but not always a woman) is always wrong#(I actually needed a LOT of persuading to read/watch Dunmeshi past the mandrake chapter#because it looked like the work was doing this to Marcille. It wasn't but it sure looked like it was going that direction.)#I haven't figured out a good way of describing it but prose that reads like it has to hit a collection of specific notes.#(like. think of any erotica where the fantasy it portrays clearly involves certain participants saying very specific things.)#I don't like mundane people with mundane problems. If I wanted to hear about those I'd call my mother.#Either show me some remarkably batshit priorities‚ some allegory‚ some murder‚#or a fantastically improbable situation or I am *out*#Podcasts. another relatable thing about Murderbot is it is obsessed with its favorite show (Sanctuary Moon). it has watched and re-watched it so many times, it uses its favorite episodes to self-soothe, it credits this show with being the first thing that "made it feel like a person." Murderbot's identity is as entwined with Sanctuary Moon as a preteen fandom blogger experiencing the drug that is self-discovery-through-media for the very first time. Murderbot is a FAN, okay.
and despite being the pov narrator for multiple novels and novellas, Murderbot never once, not even inside its own head, claims that Sanctuary Moon is a good show.

Honestly, sums up the whole fan wank about "talking about male characters in a space for female characters" and "screwing around with gender" that I can't seem to fucking escape no matter how many times I go into the notes on one of those posts and block every damn person who takes the argument seriously.
Do I sometimes wish people would be more tactful/thought-out in how they choose to portray characters I like? Yes, because I'd love to see better-written fanworks, or at least more people having the introspection to go "I have no reason for [whatever] besides personal appeal, here there be [whatever], read if you care."
Does it fucking matter at the end of the day? NO, because the people being excited and/or horny on the internet are not the catalyst for fixing fucking sexism, their behavior changing would not have far-reaching consequences the way a shift in the behavior of published authors has, downstream, on fandom spaces on the internet.
