Tangled Blessings: My magic academy horror roleplaying/journaling game is out now! All you need is a deck of tarot cards to play, but you can find printable tarot card PDFs for free or you can use this nifty dice roller alternative with a standard deck of cards.

Tangled Blessings is a 1-2 player, GM-less, and tarot-driven horror game set at a magical college. With ghosts, curses, secret societies, and a rival at your back, will you graduate at the top?

It has two play modes and neither require a game master!

Structured Journaling

Even if you’ve never played a journaling game before, Tangled Blessings makes it easy to dive in, walking you through the simple character creation process step by step. As you play, you’ll draw cards from your tarot deck and respond to prompts that guide you through 4 years at the academy. You can record your responses in whichever way pleases you most.

Two-Player

When you play with another person, you’ll take turns exploring what the Academy holds for you, adding to each other’s memories as you go. Just like in solo play, you’ll use a single tarot deck to uncover events where your characters cross paths.

I handcrafted each page of the PDF to make it as readable and atmospheric as possible, BUT I also created EPUB and HTML formats for those who prefer to play the game that way.

My favorite part about the game is that there are 22 rivals you can be randomly assigned. Each rival has a robust paragraph with traits to give you ideas about how you and rival interact.

In Tangled Blessings, your rival can be your best friend, a family member, a stranger, an enemy, a romantic interest or a combination of relations. Your rival is present in most of your memories at the academy. How your relationship evolves with them is up to you, but at the end of four years, you’ll still stand against each other in one final test of academic and magical mastery.

If you ever romanticized the university or boarding school experience, add a dash of terrible magic and this game is for you.

Inktober 2024 has dropped, so here is my annual printable worksheet. Free for any of you to use and help you with jotting down ideas and keeping track of your progress!

It seems many of the comments were right about this year focusing on a specific theme.

"--We thought we'd try having a little bit of a theme to the prompts this year. Hopefully this inspires your creativity in a different way than years past."

I don’t want to be negative, but I have to admit what I love about Inktober is how the prompts are so random. With so many of these being dangerously close to being the exact same thing, it will be more limiting to find ideas: Hike and Trek, Road and Drive, Guidebook & Journal, Discover and Expedition, etc. Nevertheless, I am eager to challenge myself. Plus I have spotted a couple prompts and instantly gotten ideas I’m enthusiastic about. I will give credit where it’s due to them for trying something new. Even if I'm hoping for a return to form next year.

I’m curious to know if anyone else feels this way about this years prompts or not. Either way, good luck and have fun, everyone!

While I plan on lingering on Tumblr until they kick me out, our regularly scheduled "tumblr is dying" wave has actually prompted me to buy my own domain, which is something I've been meaning to do for a long time but never worked up the gumption to. There's no actual site there yet, but uh. More to come, I guess.

It's not a be-all end-all solution because honestly I consume way more content on tumblr than I actually post any original thoughts or work of my own, but I think the big career change (weekends free! project-based instead of having to always be available! my creative work used and respected in a professional context!) has given me a lot more confidence in my design chops and time to perform tarot readings, which really requires experience to feel comfortable in, I think.

I've definitely geared the vibe around here towards witchy stuff, so would people be interested in fancy, graphic printable versions of my plant posts? I'm also very into journaling/planning and roleplaying, and I've got character sheets I've made for my own use under my hat. It just seems like a lot of different "ideas" to have under a single tentpole, you know?
