Storybook Sweater - Grunkle Stan & Mabel Drabble

Stan softly held the sweater in his hands, delicately darning the hole back together. A fishing pole was embroidered onto the front, with a felt fish applique "hooked" on the line.

Mabel had left him the remnants of the original ball of yarn it was knit from, some yarn needles, and a handmade booklet on how to do "Swiss Darning" (complete with pop-ups, glitter, and contrasting layers of yarn carefully glued down to show each step).

"Pfff, I want you to actually wear it!" Mabel had said, plopping the bundle of items into Stan's arms. "It's going to get torn on your adventures and it's going to tell so many stories- OH." She cut herself off and scribbled in her notebook, 'Storybook sweater w/ turnable pages'.

"I'm going to ruin it," he said. He lifted up the handknit maroon sweater, running his fingers over the stitches.

"That's the point, Grunkle Stan!" She gestured excitedly, accidentally sending the notebook and pen off the table.

"I'm right in front of you, Sweetie. You don't have to-"

"Grunkle Stan." Mabel had grabbed his face in her sticky hands- Stan hoped that it was glitter glue. Her eyes remained fixed on his. "You are going to wear this sweater. You are going to rip it, and tear it, and stain it. It's going on adventures with you, and I better see something wrong with it the next time I see you!" She then dropped her voice to a whisper, "This is your storybook sweater!"

"My...My what now?"

"Each part you fix is proof that you lived through something. I want you to point at a patched hole and tell me if it was made by pirates or merllamas!" Her eyes sparkled. "Promise me you'll wear it?"

"I promise."

So far, nothing exciting had happened to the sweater. He had caught it on a door latch twice, had spilled coffee on it once. Currently he was fixing a hole made by friction with his belt.

Stan pulled the fresh maroon yarn through the next row, smiling to himself as he found a dried piece of glitter glue on the thread.

He would have a good sweater story for her eventually.

Mostly because I procrastinated a lot and worked on several other projects buuuuuut the boy is done! I got a lil sleepy Bill now
