An au where Azula was saved by Hakoda from shipwreck when she was 2 years old and raised by him and Kya as their daughter (and got a new name since her original one is unknown)
Hello, anon!!!
1. The Royal Family goes on one of their trips to Ember Island one summer except there is a massive storm that they didn’t anticipate. The storm badly messes up their directions, causing them to start to sail south and starts to tear their boat in pieces. Ozai, Ursa and Zuko are able to stay with the biggest parts of the ship but Azula is thrown into the sea, hugging a piece of the boat so that she doesn’t drown. Because of the severity of the storm and the fact that Azula is only two, her family assumes that she passed away. She did not. Instead, Azula is still resting on the piece of the ship that she clung to when Hakoda spots her in the middle of the ocean. (Hakoda: Is that…SPIRITS! *Jumps into the ocean* Bato: Hakoda! What are you doing?! Hakoda, swimming over to Azula: It’s okay, sweetie. It’s okay. I got you. Azula, weakly: Mama? Hakoda: Not mama. I’m sorry, but I can help you. Let’s get you warmed up and get some food in you.) Hakoda brings her back to his ship where they dress her in warm furs, give her drinkable water and fish to eat.
2. When she’s got clinging to life, Azula is a pretty happy and “chatty” toddler. She loves following Hakoda around the ship—she become incredibly attached to him since he saved her life—, giggling at the other men on the ship and is pretty content with sitting on the rug and listening to stories. All in all, Azula is a really easy and happy toddler. Since she’s all alone and was seen with what looked like a piece of wood from a ship, everyone assumes that her family passed away in a shipwreck. (Hakoda: We’re bringing her with us. Bato: Hakoda- Hakoda: Kya will love her and she wouldn’t forgive me for not bringing her back. Bato: Kya will love her but can you guys handle three kids? Hakoda: It’ll be good for this little one to have siblings. Plus Katara and Sokka will get along great with her. I’m sure of it. Bato: Alright. I mean, none of us are going to argue that we put her in the Earth Kingdom orphanage so….I guess you got a new daughter). Hakoda is right. Kya loves the baby girl when she first meets her and she agrees with Hakoda that the best option is for them to take her in. There’s just one problem. Azula is two and can’t say her name and Hakoda and Kya don’t know it. (Hakoda: She needs a new name. Kya: Korra? Hakoda: No. Kya: Ivalu? Hakoda: No. Kya: Eska? Hakoda: No. Kya: You pick one then. Hakoda: How about….Hinata? Kya: Hinata. I love it.)
3. Hinata(Azula), Katara and Sokka grow up close. Despite the fact that they’re from different nations, the kids never let that stop them from being siblings and calling each other brother and sister. Azula grew up just like any other child in the South Pole. When Azula’s firebending comes in is when the family reaches its first problem. Because up until that point everyone had believed Azula was an Earth Kingdom child and finding out she was a firebender makes them realize how wrong they were. Plus, Azula has been raised to see firebenders as monsters and villains so finding out she is one is heartbreaking to her. (Azula, crying into her mom’s jacket: I don’t wanna be a monster! I wanna be a waterbender like Kat! Kya: Hinata, baby, the spirits can’t change what element you bend. Azula: But I’m a monster! Kya: You’re not a monster. Those firebenders we told you about…they were raised to be horrible, but you? You’re the sweetest girl. You could never be like them. Azula: Promise? Kya: I promise. I love you, Hinata. Azula: I love you too. mom.) Azula finally accepts her moms offer to go to the caves and train in secret with Katara. Kya doesn’t want them bending in public but she doesn’t want them to ignore their skills either, so they go to a hidden cave where the girls can practice away from possible eyes.
4. Sadly, that’s not the last challenge the family faces because 2 years after Azula and Katara get their bending, when they’re eight and Sokka is nine, a raid is done on the South Pole, looking for the last waterbender. Azula initially runs to the tent and finds her mom and the soldier. Kya tells Azula to leave, saying that she can handle this but Azula refuses to leave her mom. The solder recognized that Azula is Fire Nation but he doesn’t know who she is. He tries to take her which results in Kya going full mama bear on him and grabbing a nearby sword to stab him with repeatedly. After she’s sure her daughter is okay, she hides Azula under some furs and leaves the tent to see the fight is mostly over. Hakoda returns and tells her that they didn’t take anyone but Kya tells him that they were there for Katara and what she did. The parents agree to go through the village and find whoever betrayed them but also that Katara and Azula are officially banned from bending. The raiders do not return, (funding issues) and the tribe continues on with Hakoda eventually leaving for war with all the men. This time, Kya is there to hold her three kids as they watch their father disappear into the horizon.
5. Years later, Azula, Katara and Sokka are out fishing when they come across a familiar iceberg. They break Aang out and bring him back to the village where Kya is nervous about the introduction of an airbender into their village and, low and behold, a few days later the Fire Nation is back but this time it's not a man but a young boy. (Kya really wants to ask this child where his parents are but holds herself back). This time, Azula tries to fight Zuko by firebending her blue flames at him. (Zuko: You're a firebender? Who are you!? How could you betray your own nation?! Azula: My nation? The Water Tribe is my nation and, to answer your question, my name is Hinata. Zuko: You're a....a firebender in the South Pole. Azula: Wow. I'm glad the Fire Nation is teaching basic deduction skills.) Zuko can only think of one reason why a firebender would be in the South Pole because she's the Avatar. She must have hidden her tattoos which is how no one discovered her. Azula decides to go along with this in exchange for him leaving the village alone. (Of course Kya tries to stop this and begs Zuko not to take her daughter but Azula is still taken away). Aang arrives right after Azula is taken away and promises to help get her back. Katara, Sokka, Kya, Aang and Appa all fly off to go get Azula back which is where Aang is revealed as the Avatar and the group fly away, intending to go to the North Pole so Aang and Katara can learn waterbender.
6. I didn't have space for this but just as an extra add on, Kya does eventually tell Azula that she's not biologically related to them and her real family was from the Fire Nation. Azula does know this, but still wants to call Kya and Hakoda her mother and father which they are completely okay with. No one figures out though that Azula is part of the Royal Family until Ran and Shaw. The dragons are able to sense Azula's ancestry and, with the help of the Sun Warriors, tell Zuko and Azula that they're siblings and tell Azula what her original name was. Since Zuko is the only child of Ursa and Ozai, Azulon never ordered him dead and Ursa never left, meaning that she's there when Azula returns to the palace and knows who she is. Ursa is beyond thrilled to see her daughter again but there is some tension between her and Kya for obvious reasons. (Ursa: The...replacement mother can wait a few moments. I want to spend time with my daughter. Kya: I think Hinata can decide for herself. Ursa: Hinata? An odd name choice, don't you think? Kya: And naming her after a genocidal dictator was the best name in existence? Ursa: Azula is my daughter. She needs to spend time with the woman who gave birth to her. Kya: And the woman who apparently didn't have enough common sense to grab her two year old when a storm was approaching.) They do eventually get along but it's a tough few months.

iwaoisuga atla au you said?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm So Unbelievably Normal About This
(pls yap about it i NEED to know everything)
iwaoisuga atla au!!!!!!!!!! god i want to go back to writing it so bad but it's fallen down the list of priorities a little bit lol. but here's the basics!!!
it's heavily inspired by @monstrsball 's atla verse !! she has a whole tag that's so worth going through if you like haikyuu and atla
it follows fire nation prince!oikawa who is a non-bender and has a complex about it from the pov of firebender!iwaizumi who follows him into his banishment and on his quest to hunt down the avatar
avatar!hinata, ofc, who is found by waterbender!suga in the south pole
they journey to the northpole where they meet waterbender!kageyama; kageyama will then be convinced to train hinata and join them on their journey to the earth kingdom
suga is kinda in sokka's role and kageyama's is sorta in katara's role
other characters: prodigy firebender!ushijima as azula, oikawa's longtime rival and the jewel of the royal family despite not actually being blood related; earthbender!osamu as toph; non-bender!atsumu who convinces an unwilling osamu to train hinata
it follows the atla plot pretty closely!! there's not a lot that i'm inventing for this beyond stuff that makes it work with haikyuu characterization tbh
probably gonna be a non-linear vignette style of writing! think something similar to an actual atla fic i wrote a few years back
honestly that's pretty much all i got atm! i don't usually do much outlining for my fics unless i'm planning for more than, like, 20k words lol, and this fic is pretty much plotted out anyway bc it's a pretty 1:1 au. so i mostly know where this is going just based on atla's plot, but i want to keep exploring the haikyuu character dynamics more!!! this was so much fun to start writing, i should really get back to it.....

Ooooh do you want to expand on your haikyuu x atla thoughts? :3
oh man I have so many scattered thoughts and some of them are conflicting 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫
okay, so firebender!kuroo, obviously. kenma is fire nation nobility, but a non-bender, and in my version of events there's a power struggle for the throne. kenma is on the run following an assassination attempt and kuroo is his childhood friend that becomes his bodyguard after deserting the army.
earthbender!bokuto!!! and akaashi is also from the earth kingdom. daichi is an earthbender
I'm torn between earthbender!iwaizumi and iwa, oikawa, and kageyama all being water tribe, with iwa being a warrior and oikawa and kageyama both being waterbenders
airbender!hinata for sure.
that's about all I have so far lmao

The First Match
A 2k~ words oneshot about firebender Hinata  Shōyō and firebender Kageyama Tobio’s first meeting/duel for my Haikyuu Avatar AU.
Read under the cut.
Hinata Shōyō was nervous. But it was normal being nervous, right? Everything was going to be fine. Everything had to be fine! It wasn’t like he would bring horrible shame upon his family by losing in the first round, right? It was exactly like that, but that was fine. He’d simply not lose in the first round. Just think positive. He was going to win the first round, no matter who he was pitted up against. And he was going to win every round after that as well. With that thought in his mind he dared to take a peek at the others around him.
 That was a mistake.
Logically he knew they were all the same age. All his age. 15 years old. But he stood out like a sore thumb and not just because of his bright orange hair. Compared to them he was tiny.  Even while sitting down. They were all so tall. And so serious as well. They were all just meditating, as they were instructed. Shōyō was glad to find that a boy with very spiky, straight-up hair, making it look like a turnip, was struggling slightly with his candles. At least he wasn’t the only nervous one. The boy next to turnip-head seemed to be nearly falling asleep, the candles in front of him small but perfectly controlled. There were a few others.  Some with flickering candles out of nervousness, some with flames so small they were barely there, some who were desperately trying to keep control. And then there was him.
He was probably the most terrifying firebender in the entire room, maybe including the two adults in the room who were keeping watch to make sure someone wouldn’t start a fire out of sheer nervousness. Kageyama Tobio. That is what Shōyō had heard people call him before they had entered the room. He had…. A reputation. Shōyō couldn’t help but feel slightly jealous. He wished he had a reputation. But he knew he didn’t earn it. Tobio on the other hand… clearly did. The flames of his candles were huge and steady. They rose with every breath and even from across the room Shōyō could feel their warmth. He didn’t pay attention to what any others in the room were doing. And then suddenly he did.
Shōyō jolted at the sight of Tobio’s head moving slightly. He now could see exactly half the other’s face. And one very blue eye was staring straight at him. Shōyō let out a soft squeak. He immediately turned his gaze back towards the candles in front of him, trying to ignore the feeling of Tobio staring at his back. He couldn’t help but shiver. How could someone’s flames be so hot but eyes be so cold? He closed his eyes and connected his inner flame to the tiny flickering candles. It helped him calm down a little. Breathe in. Breathe out. They shrunk when he breathed in and grew when he breathed out.  They were relatively small and unruly, but at least they did what he needed them to do. By the spirits. Tobio was terrifying. Shōyō felt slightly excited. The idea of fighting someone so strong. So powerful. It excited him. Yet at the same time, he felt utterly terrified. He couldn’t help but send out a small prayer to the sun-spirit Agni. Please Agni, don’t make him face off this guy.
 Agni had forsaken him.
The tenseness in the room was unbearable. Shōyō was shaking at this point. The room had gradually gotten emptier as people were called out for their fire duels. Not full on Agni Kai, obviously. They were teenagers. What psychopath would make a teenager engage in a duel to the death? Just regular fire duels in an arena with boundaries and rules to keep the burn victims to a minimum. So, two people were called out for the duel. The winner would go on to the next round and the loser was sent home. The top three would be trained to eventually join an elite squat of fighters.  By now all others had left the room, each called out for their first (and hopefully not last) duel of the day. Meanwhile Shōyō was left with Tobio. To lose in the first round. That was shameful. It was dishonourable. And it was becoming more likely with the minute that that was going to happen. Shōyō gulped, before clenching his fists. His candles erupting with flames at the motion. He was still going to put up a fight.
 ‘Hinata Shōyō’
‘Kageyama Tobio’
Their names were called out. Shōyō scrambled up. Meanwhile he noticed Tobio stand up with a grace he honestly had never seen out of anyone. The walk to the arena felt excruciatingly long. Not in the least because Tobio was walking next to him and whenever Shōyō would peek at him from the corners of his eyes he’d look so serious. Like his life depended on this very duel. When they got to the arena, they walked each to their own side. They kneeled down, facing away from each other. Shōyō’s heart pounded in his chest as he waited for the signal. He didn’t have a plan. What was he going to do?! Was his opponent also so unsure? Probably not. He had looked confident. Maybe too confident. He better not underestimate Shōyō!  The sound of a gong signalled the beginning of the match.
Shōyō stood up and turned around and immediately had to roll aside as a fireball was sent his way. Fast! His opponent was not only powerful with steady flames, but also incredibly fast! How unfair! He jumped aside before sending a fireball Tobio’s way. Tobio gracefully evaded it. In comparison Shōyō felt clunky and clumsy. Tobio’s movements were graceful and proper. The movements of someone who had had proper training for years. Shōyō was mostly self-taught. But he had entered this tournament to prove himself and prove himself he shall!
His fireballs were not as big or reached very far, which just meant he had to get in close. He ran towards Tobio, screaming. His first attack was simply pushed to the side. But the same went for Tobio’s attack. For a minute or so they just exchanged attacks. Shōyō tried to get a punch in with a fiery fist. Tobio blocked. Tobio tried to hit Shōyō with a fiery dagger. Shōyō pushed his hands out of the way. Shōyō tried to swipe out Tobio’s legs from underneath him… You get the gist.
Shōyō felt sweat roll down his face. How long had they been fighting? It felt like hours. But it definitely wasn’t. There was an hour limit on the match after all. He needed a chance. Just one opportunity. He’d get a good hit in. At least then people would know he wasn’t pathetic.
And a chance he got. Though not the way he expected it. Though to be fair, Tobio did not expect it either.
He caught Shōyō off guard with an upwards strike. In his surprise, Shōyō simply went along with it. There was a faint pressure on Tobio’s arm as Shōyō used his flame to propel himself upwards. Tobio couldn’t help but gape at the move. That boy. That boy that nobody had taken seriously. (Well anybody but him, but that was more because he took everybody seriously on principle and not because he had expected much out of the nervous wreck of a boy). That boy who had been shaking when he realised, he would be facing off against Tobio. That boy had just used Tobio’s flames for his own sake. He watched Shōyō spin in the air, screaming in pure determination. He then stuck out his leg, which was engulfed with flames, ready to strike. Tobio snapped out of his daze. He had to ask later. How long this kid had been training. Couldn’t be long. Maybe a month at most. If it had been longer the kid had just been wasting so much time with so little results for the amount of potential he showed. Tobio jumped quite a long distance backwards, evading the kick. He moved his hands so his fingers were pointing outwards to Shōyō. He pressed his fingertips together and pushed forwards. The flames from Shōyō’s kick were redirected out of his way through his move. Redirecting flames was easy. He’d been doing it since he was five. But Shōyō had just used his flame. How was that even possible?! It shouldn’t be! Nobody had ever told him that! He took a deep breath, before taking a step out and pushing his arms out, his palms facing Shōyō. A simple attack, sure. But Tobio had always found that simple attacks could be incredibly useful if you just put enough force into it.
Shōyō’s eyes widened as a large flame came barrelling towards him. Instinctively he took a step back in fear. It wasn’t just the size of the flame that scared him. It was also the colour. Tobio’s flame turned blue. Shōyō could already feel the heat, even though it wasn’t close. He then took a sturdy stance. He wished he was an earthbender, so he could literally plant his feet into the earth. He threw out his arms in front of him, pushing all his force into that one flame meant to protect him. He looked away, unable to face the heat of his own flame, nevermind the heat of Tobio’s blue flame hitting his. Tobio’s fire pushed against his fiery shield and split off towards the side. Blue surrounded him. He could hear the fire roar around him. It was all he could hear. But at least it wasn’t harming him. Just being pushed to the side. More sweat cascaded down Shōyō’s face. His arms trembled. And he couldn’t help but take another step back. He tried to steady himself. And he succeeded, but it didn’t matter much. He could feel himself being pushed back by the sheer force of Tobio’s fire. He pushed his arms out again, locking his shoulders in one last desperate attempt to fight back. But even as his fire grew a little bit, it was no match for the roaring blue flames. He felt his bare feet scrape over the line of the arena. And then he heard the gong.
The match was over.
‘Three minutes and twelve seconds. Kageyama Tobio wins.’
Three minutes. It had felt like hours. Or at least longer than that. Three minutes. As soon as Tobio’s fire was gone Shōyō fell to his knees. Three minutes. He felt exhausted. Three minutes. He wouldn’t cry. Not yet. Later. When he left the arena. When only he would be there. Three minutes. Tobio was standing in front of him. Shōyō looked up, meeting those cold, stern eyes. Three minutes.
‘How long?’ Three minutes.
‘Wh-what?’ Shōyō asked shakily. Why was this guy talking to him? He had already won. Three minutes.
‘How long have you been training?’ Tobio clarified.
‘Three years,’ Shōyō responded. He noticed Tobio’s unsatisfied expression. ‘Don’t look down on me! I know I only lasted three minutes! I’m self-taught, but I can fight!’ Yet Tobio only clicked his tongue.
‘What a waste of time.’ Those words broke his heart. He clenched his fists, glaring up at the speaker of those words. There were tears in his eyes, but he would not let them fall. Not while Tobio was still there to watch. He was strong. He was proud. He would not cry. Tobio turned around and started walking away, having said his piece. But Shōyō wasn’t done.
‘Next time I will win,’ Shōyō declared. To everyone else it sounded like a last cry of despair. But to Tobio it sounded the exact way Shōyō had intended it. A challenge. And Tobio never underestimated anyone even if only out of principle.

His eyes always on her -SasuHina Month Day 17
A bit late but I wanted to post this still. A very short ATLA au but I kinda like it. I tried mixing them both. Enjoy
Noroke     (Japanese)
“Speaking with fondness about your loved one.”
Nunchi     (Korean)
“The subtle and often unnoticed art of listening and gauging another person’s mood.”
Sasuke watched Hinata speak to the high-class officials around her. Compared to the opulent dress of others around her, she was dressed modestly in a sleeveless wrap dress with an attached cape that moved like water on her. Her simple jewellery stood out amongst the overly detailed of others.
“But bloodbending, you can’t honestly think it’s at all a good thing. that woman used it to keep control of everyone around her.”
“Out of revenge yes. You seem to forget that Koharu was taken from her home just for the simple fact she was a waterbender. While her intentions for making the style were inherently bad, that doesn’t mean we should throw it away and forget it exists. We’d be doing exactly what she wants, creating a villain out of her and justifying her actions. Instead, we should be trying to find a positive in it, such as healing. Internal bleeding has been the cause of death as it’s hard to detect. Just the ability to sense the blood in the wrong place and even move it could be lifesaving. That’s not to say every waterbender should learn how to use it. I only learned in the moment and it’s not a moment I ever hope to relive. We mentally look at each bender to see if they can handle it and if they decide halfway they can’t, that’s fine. It’ll have to be taught that this can’t be used against a person and monitored but with time, I have faith that it could become an integral part of healing. I also believe that other facets of bending can be used in different way in our ever-changing world.”
“I can practically see the hearts above your head.” Sasuke turned to his brother, who sat on the throne, the lights glinting off the flame crown in his hair. The glassy eyes and the fact that he stared straight ahead gave away his blindness. That didn’t mean his brother was an easy target, there was a reason he was the Fire Lord.
“She hated it before. I thought after Koharu forced the knowledge on her to save us, she’d never be the same. I mean, it wasn’t pleasant, feeling your own body betray you and if you focused hard enough, feeling the blood pull you in different directions. But she was determined to not give Koharu the satisfaction, so she worked on what to do. And now she can actually do it. She’ll be remembered as one of the greatest healers ever.”
“And not just the Avatar. Or married to the Prince of the Fire Nation when you get around to proposing. Or the student of Firebending Master Sasuke Uchiha.”
Those were all hats Hinata wore. The next avatar in the line of water benders, lover to Sasuke and his first and so far, only student. Teaching her should have given him his mastery if he didn’t already have it before. she was so scared of a single flame, understandable given her life in the Northern Water Tribe, but he’d been ready to tear his hair out. Finding her to specifically teach her had been near impossible as she’d been so convinced, he was dragging her back to the Fire Nation to give to the usurper who was on the throne at the time. In all honesty, Sasuke was there on behalf of the White Lily, the rebel group his brother had been head of. It took a lot of talking and a rescue mission or two for her to finally believe him and it had been paid back in the toughest part of learning.
The falling in love wasn’t supposed to happen, but it did. She was just, the brightest person, who didn’t give up no matter what. She held so much on her shoulders but she didn’t break, at least not in front of others. He’d found her once and didn’t want to see it again. So, he’d sit with her, even if she didn’t talk. Sometimes she did and their bond grew. When Naruto teased him about being a jealous boyfriend when Kiba had his hands on her during their earthbending lessons, it became very clear. Before the final battle, he wanted to say something, but she beat him to it by kissing him.
“I plan on coming back when I take down Daizo. I just…I couldn’t leave without letting you know.”
He kissed her back, hard and told her if she didn’t come back, he was going to the spirit world and killing her. He’d never seen anyone smile so hard at a death threat.
Months had passed and the Fire Nation was repairing itself from the time under Diazo’s rule. Hinata had been traveling with her group helping other villages and towns, while Sasuke had to stay with his brother. To be honest, this was the first time he was getting the chance to see her in months, but he didn’t mind not whisking her away. Watching her be the confident person when he remembered how shy she was before was amazing to watch.
“I still remember when you sent me letters, questioning if she really was the Avatar. Now look at you.”
Sasuke sent a small glare to his brother’s teasing. “Leave me alone. I don’t tease you nearly as much when it comes to you and Kisame.”
“because it’s not as fun. Besides, you didn’t have to hear remark after remark about how amazing the young Avatar is and how beautiful. Never once have you been attrached to a woman’s looks. Now I wish I could see to know what drew you to her.”
“What didn’t? Her eyes are like the moon and her hair like the river when the moon is gone. But it was more than looks. Her kindness and determination, it’s what made me never give up on her.”
And so, he bragged about her. How could he not? He was just upset he didn’t have her there when he did, she always got so red. Speaking of turning red, he noticed she was playing with her fingers. The bottom of her dress moved as she shifted and he knew he had to go in.
“Stay with him.” He ordered the nearest guard and quickly made his way to Hinata who’s cheeks were starting to flush. “Excuse me gentlemen, my apologies for the interruption but I’m afraid the Fire Lord wanted to speak to the Avatar. If you’ll excuse us.” With a gentle hand on her back, he took the long way back to the throne. “You’re ok?”
“F-fine.” She’d reverted back to stuttering in her nervousness. “their questions s-started coming f-fast and I coul-couldn’t think.”
He let his fingers run up and down her spine, like he used to do when it happened before. he was sure he was getting looks, but he didn’t care.
“I’m sure we can leave if you want.”
Hinata shook her head, leaning against him. “No. I haven’t s-seen you in so long. I-I don’t care if we have to spend time around everyone else.”
“Really? Even if I get to finally show you the turtleduck pond?”
Hinata’s eyes lit up. Ever since he told her about the pond in the palace, she’d been dreaming of seeing it. “I guess we can disappear for 5 minutes.”
They stayed outside for the rest of the party. With how giddy she was and how her smile never left her face, how could he?

HQ characters as benders headcanons that made it into my fic.
Ok, so for this fic idea I decided to outline which characters (and side characters) would be certain kinds of benders. So here is my listing of what kind of bender each character is going to be in my particular story. I’ve seen a lot  of different people’s takes on this, but this is what works best for me in the story.
Airbenders:
Hinata
Bokuto
Yachi
All of Kamomedai (if I decide to add them in later)
Waterbenders:
Suga
Kiyoko
Tsukishima
Akaashi
Rest of Fukurodani (When they pop up)
Earthbenders:
Iwaizumi
Daichi
Asahi
Tendo
Kyotani
Yaku
Watari
Ukai
All of Dateko (wall of Ba Sing Se)
All of Nohebi (Dai Li)
Firebenders:
Kageyama
Atsumu
Osamu
Oikawa
Kenma
Kuroo
Ushijima
Kunimi
Kindaichi
Goshiki
Lev
Aran
Rest of Nekoma (white lotus stand in)
Rest of Shiratorizawa (elite firebenders)
Non-benders:
Nishinoya
Tanaka
Sakusa
Yamaguchi
Makki
Mattsun
Takeda
Kita
Rest of Inarizaki (soldiers under Kita)
Krsn 2nd years (Non-bending warriors)
except Ennoshita, he’s with Daichi’s gang
This list is subject to change for both story reasons and sometimes I just feel like changing things. In any case, here it is. I’ll probably be posting some art soon, so that’ll be fun.

Karasuno as element benders
This is inspired by Avatar: The Last Airbender since I’ve been binge watching all the seasons.... hehe
Daichi would be an earthbender hands down. The way he grounds himself and the strength he has to pull together to ensure the team is positioned to win, on top of always sticking his stance, Daichi would make an excellent earthbender. In fact, he could probably be apart of an earthbending army and rank quite high in his position if he wanted to.  He strikes as someone who is talented in earth shielding and rock bullets.
Sugawara would be a waterbender. In some ways, his nuturing and caring prescence gives me the impression that he and Katara would get along well. Though he might not posess any healing abilities, he has an artistic sense to create beautiful ice scuptures with his skills and tends to make quite the water bending instructor. However, he would specialize in healing, making sure that the resources of the tribe are fully equipped and physically healed for a battle or just day to day life.
Asahi would be a firebender as suprising as that may sound. He would be a late bloomer however, as some firebenders tend to bend with anger and fear, Asahi learned to bend by being provoked with protection. With a gentle, free flowing background, his flames spread in both warmth and burning sensations. With that, he’s able to redirect lightning, but not so much control it as others can. However, he has great skill in fire vortex attacks and combustion bending. Even he is sometimes shocked at how strong he actually is.
Nishinoya would be an earthbender. Like Daichi, his stands his ground and rooted to both himself and his surroundings. As the libero has to stay close to the ground and be ready to take up the most outragous saves, Nishinoya would make such a strong and sharp earthbender. He would probably learn his bending from the swamp and master it in the city (both ways would work). He’s also best friends with the cabbage man. Like for SURE.
Kinoshita would be an firebender. Specifically, he would have a knack for lighting strikes and have the ability to control the movements of electricity at the tips of his fingers. Though this does not occur often, when he does gain control, I think Kinoshita brings a lot of surprises in the battlefield. Like fire, he fumes bursts of energy where he can, but also remains his composure by heat control.
Narita would be a airbender. His movements are evasive yet free-flowing like air. I think he carries a particular sense calmness in his movements and poses a very meditative state when he is not attacking. He waits for the right moment, and builds up heaps of air to turn into energy and momentum before releasing. His intention is never quite to kill or harm, but rather create counter attacks that make the opponent imbalanced or miss their shots. He also has the ability to reach the spirit world, and occasionally goes back there to visit his spirit friends.
Ennoshita would be an earthbender. Although he has very air-like tendencies, he actually is able to navigate the air well through his earth levitation. Intuitive to the frequencies of the earth, he is able to curate mini earthquakes around the area, throwing the opponents off balance but also manipulate the status of the ground to be earth sinking as well. This way, enemies never get ear Ennoshita. The way he talks and carries himself is very much straight-forward and loyal, much like earth signs in general.
Kiyoko would be a waterbender. Kiyoko shows great versatility and flexibility in the way she carries herself. Just as much as she is steadfast and sharp minded, I think she would have great skill in deflecting in her attacks and maneuver focus on controls. She could ice creep a lot of people into freezing themselves into ice sculptures and create water brackets that could slice through. However, she doesn’t fight unless she has to. She much prefers to help Sugawara with healing. She may not realize it yet, but she also has a special skill in blood bending. Although, I can’t think of a case where she would need to use that as well.
Tanaka would be a lavabender. Unlike Asahi and Nishinoya, Takana’s quickwitted and explosive personality would lead him into both a grounding and heated bending technique. Tremendously strong--yes, but also just as firm in his attacks and thinking. His strength is rooted deep into the magmas of the earth but striking is haste and urgent like a wildfire.
Hinata would be a firebender. He’s a spitfire waiting to burst, and you even see it from his name, which means “sunny place”. Though he is quick to burst, that doesn’t mean his attacks strike as weak. He is certainly a fireball with lots of energy and has no problem creating large fumes of fire to defend from the enemy. He is youthful and young, much like the fire he creates. That also includes the occasional burns he gets from messing around as well. Hehe
Kageyama would be a waterbender. Much like water, his water flows controlled, stilled, yet thick. He is very conscious of how he formulates water in its three different bases (gas, solid, and liquids), therefore you might find him constantly practicing those techniques and perfecting it. You might find him often water whipping Hinata in the butt too~. However, I think his most prominent attacks are with ice, as it comes off to be physically striking and sharp, much like his mind. He is constantly analyzing how to manipulate water into multiple forms during battles.
Tsukishima would also be a waterbender. Like the series, I think Tsukishima would have ancestry with the Moon spirit in some form, and therefore, root from the Northern Water Tribe. Though he would be skilled in water attacks, I don’t think that would be where his greatest strength lies. I actually see him on the defensive lines if creating tidal waves, ice prisons, and steam to distract intruders. I certainly see him as a scholar, so I think occasionally he would practice healing on the low.
Yamaguchi would be an earthbender/metal bender. I definitely got it from his name, Yama meaning Mountain. But also, much like his personality to remain strong willed and become a pillar to his team, he is capable of so much strength. He has a natural talent with seismic sense, meaning he is able to sense the smallest vibrations of earth/metal and intuitively guess the surroundings. That’s why he’s able to create defenses that are critical. He would also eventually build the skill to metal bend.
Yachi would be an airbender. I would imagine that she would rarely have to go out to fight as most airbenders are quite peaceful and prefer to stay on high grounds and live a less violent life. She capable of making air funnels and wipes, while occasionally teaching kids how to make air balls to roam around the air temples. I think she strikes as someone who has a skill in flying! You often can find her gliding in the air next to a bison with a bunch of kids (she teaches the children how to fly).

i am SO sorry i am being so annoying about this but i'm having THOUGHTS. i have a whole tag for u now. i hope you're proud of the brainrot you've given me /j
but anyways nonbender oikawa leaves room for firebender iwaizumi to be avatar hinata's firebending teacher and for oikawa to teach hinata how to chi block, all of which i'm kind of obsessed with. iwaizumi teaching hinata would be SO good. also iwaizumi getting his own side arc where he loses his bending because he, too, is betraying his country and his birthright, changing his entire worldview, just like oikawa is, even if he's doing it a little faster. iwaizumi with the dragons, coming back and whispering all their secrets to oikawa, late at night while everyone else is asleep.
and azula!ushijima having his final showdown w a nonbender is kind of insane and i'm obsessed with it. oikawa and iwaizumi constantly practice dueling each other so that oikawa knows all the best ways to fight against benders while not being able to bend. oikawa and osamu and kageyama doing a similar thing, so that oikawa is prepared for any element. in the show, zuko learns to integrate other styles of bending into his own forms, right, so like, same hat but with nonbending. similarly, each of the others learn from each other's bend (and we're each other's teachers manga reference my beloved i must insert you in everything).
oikawa and atsumu trading nonbender secrets, bonding over their lack of the fantastical power everyone around them has, practicing fighting togethere so that they're prepared for that, too. becoming friends even after a short rivalry-- oikawa taking atsumu's place as the one non-bender kinda rivalry-- and learning a new respect for each other's nations.
this is a world where everyone underestimates nonbenders because they can't control the elements. oikawa takes that and tears it to pieces. atsumu, too, takes it and makes every single doubter eat their words.
omg don’t even apologize i am LOVING all of this, your input is much appreciated. and yeah i’m very proud of the brainrot i’ve given you actually <3 /j
gah yeah iwaizumi in this au is killing me (pos!) i love him so much. having his own arc… him immediately sharing what he learns from the dragons with oikawa because of course he does. why wouldn’t he?
ugh yes. the ushijima and oikawa showdown would be so so good.
all of them learning from each other and training together… yeah yeah yeah, ok, ok. them training with oikawa and helping him learn how to best fight against benders of all types. YEAH. i don’t have anything to add i’m just obsessed with all of this.
the oikawa and atsumu bond… yeah. that’s been on my mind since you first proposed nonbender!oikawa as zuko. as first atsumu is threatened but then he realizes that it’s actually kind of nice that he’s not the only nonbender anymore. that there’s someone that he can learn from too. them training together. talking about their experiences with people underestimating them their whole lives. atsumu talking about how it felt when he realized he was never going to be a bender like his brother - a feeling oikawa can relate to because it’s how he felt too. yeah…

Some supporting characters, like Hinata, were overhauled for plot reasons and to give things a fresh perspective and she’s one character who changed quite a bit. Hinata is from a small village at the base of the mountains near where Hanami will one day be born! Sadly, she passed away when Hanami was young. She was previously from the Eastern Air Nomads, but now she’s a mischievous non-bender who at one time wreaked havoc across her village. 😂 (Her design is based on miko priestesses from Japan. And yes, she’s from a firebending-based village) Disclaimer: This art is not official nor are we affiliated with the shows or the creators. All of our work is fan-made specifically for our upcoming webcomic.

omg ! i loved your hogwarts headcanons! could you do a haikyuu avatar the last air bender au too? if you know about it lol xD byeeee :D
ofc!! i watched atla for the first time over quarantine and i’m still deep in the fandom, so this is a welcome request. i only did a handful of characters, so lmk if you’d like to see any others!
WATER TRIBE
oikawa is the king of adaptability. he’s also a talented bender! can probably heal others, but not as well as kageyama (who’s not even a waterbender), which is a sore spot for him. seems like a southern water tribe person to me because he’s from miyagi.
akaashi is from the northern water tribe (tokyo). he’s a nonbender, but he’s just as powerful (maybe even more) than the benders themselves. a good diplomat to other nations.
EARTH KINGDOM
daichi is the most solid and reliable person i know. never really got the hang of earthbending, but he’s good enough to lead the defense of the earth kingdom. gives me omashu vibes.
ushijima looks like he could be from the fire nation, but he’s as steady as a rock. definitely can lavabend!!!!!
nishinoya learned earthbending from the badgermoles themselves, so he’s basically toph. can metalbend with ease.
FIRE NATION
kageyama is a firebender but probably the avatar, so he can do it all. interestingly, he doesn’t have so much trouble with waterbending, much to oikawa’s chagrin. can lightningbend like nobody’s business and comes from one of the islands, not the main fire nation continent.
bokuto is well known for his excellent firebending, but occasionally he just,,, fizzles out and can’t bend at all. still, he’s very powerful, especially when he’s got akaashi of the northern water tribe at his side. has tried to bend lightning but got too emotional.
AIR NOMADS
hinata is an air nomad because of his mid-air battles, ability to practically fly, and general bubbly aang-like personality and affinity for freedom and independence. hated meditating at first, but he’ll do whatever he can to get stronger.
