Nat was more than happy to leave the theorizing behind them. Talking about it felt like therapy ...for a time. And then she'd remember this was real life and it was tangled, and messy, and it made very little sense. Maybe Nat was only good at guessing plots in a book, when she was handed everything she needed on a silver platter. Maybe this didn't need to have rhyme or reason behind it. Maybe it was just this big, awful thing that they'd all gotten themselves mixed up in, and that's just the way it was.

But then Ollie pulled out a camera and a devilish grin lit up Nat's face with a laugh. There was little more that she loved than being in front of a camera. She stepped toward the snowman to admire their work, turning back to Ollie to make a face at the camera. And then she faced the snowman again, dramatically winding up her punch before she let it fly.

Her fist sank easily into the packed snow. It gave way easily beneath her punch, but there was just enough behind it to be satisfying. Exhilaration raced through her like a second heartbeat and she let out a wild laugh as she attacked it again. Cheeks flushed, she turned back to Ollie and waved him over. "Come get some of this!"

It was a silly thing; two kids stomping a snowman back into the ground and cackling like fiends. But damn if it wasn't exactly what she'd needed.

"It does make sense," Ollie said, nodding his head. He was sure the more they thought about it the more holes there would be in that theory as well. That they were just trying to make sense of something nonsensical. Or at least something they didn't have all the information for. Yes, G could be absolutely crazy, or at least human, and have completely veered off the path of what they wanted. Or maybe a very Joker wanting to watch the world burn type of person. But they just didn't have a bead on them. Everything G released was, obviously, not about themselves but about Greer. Of course. He wondered if he was so caught up on G, especially after what they had done to Sam, that he'd started to miss the Greer point of it all. Sometimes he felt like that… But how was he supposed to let any of what they had done go? He just couldn't.

Ollie laughed, smoothing out a few lumpy bits on the balls as they were stacked on top of each other and pulled back. "Ladies first, of course," he said, motioning for Nat to take the first swing. "Oh wait!" He said, a moment after. "Hang on." He pulled his phone out of his pocket and swiped the camera on. "Something for the memory books." It was important to keep track of the good memories. Last year at this time he was getting a tattoo from Link, and that was still… something he had fondness for. But this seemed like a much less complicated memory to keep of the night. "Alright. Knock it's ass out!"

Natalie grinned as she took the piece of paper. It wasn’t every day you got a pretty girl’s phone number. Felt like a win, no matter the context. “Thanks. I appreciate that.” She held up the paper. “I’ll call you.” She moved to stand, realizing she should leave Helena to her actual job.

"Well it wouldn't be economically sound to be mean to people who come to me for my services. That and I tend to reserve most of my distain for men." She shrugged, sitting back with a small smirk when Natalie complimented the way she dressed. "You too. I like your hair." When Natalie asked for her number Helena got up and found a pen and some paper. "Thankfully house phones have become far more popular in Huntsville." She handed over the number. "Let me know how things go. If they go badly I'll make sure all her hair falls out."

But the idea was young Raven who assisted Viktor in the work that stained her hands early on. In the Royal AU, Viktor is a known assassin that carried out his business in the basement of their home, where contracts were signed, secrets exchanged and bodies left to rot until they can disposed of. So with the air thick with the foul stench and metallic scent of blood, Viktor always sent Raven for a simple task.

Bring back flowers and herbs.

At first, she didn’t question it. Of course she didn't, she was young, and Viktor was all she knew. Viktor was her guardian, her mentor, the only constant in her life, the one that brought her back from the brink of death. So. she did as she was told. Every day, she gathered bundles of lavender, rosemary, thyme, and rose petals—herbs and flowers known for their strong fragrances, their use in purifying spaces, and their ability to hide the unpleasant scents. Sometimes she gather the flowers and put them in small pouches, sometimes she would have to boil them in a liquid that the maid never name.

When she was old enough, she knew what these flowers were for then. She arranged them carefully around the dimly lit cellar, the mingling scents pushing back against the stink of blood and rot.

What meant to be pretty flowers became something she feared against. The once sweet smelling lavender now becomes lost its colors and turned sickly, the roses stained with red.

Flower fields are nothing but a reminder, a show of guilt.

When it came time to dispose of the bodies, they traveled under the cover of night, the place of disposal was never the same, but the path back to the house was unmistakable.

The always had to cross a vast field of sunflowers. Towering, golden, and ever-facing the sun, they stood as if they were watching. To Raven, they were more than just flowers.

They were witnesses. Their wide, unblinking faces followed her as she walked among them, as if they knew.

Even though she had never taken a life, she knew she was just as guilty as Viktor.

He killed, she helped him bury the truth.

He painted the floor red, she covered it with petals.

But the sunflowers did not care for the differences, did they? In the end, she is one with Viktor, sharing the same pair of hands, the same weight of sins.

She could no longer look at flowers without seeing the bodies beneath them, without remembering how their fragrance never truly masked the stench of death. Sometimes, in the marketplace, the scent of fresh flowers twisted into something rancid, something rotten—as if the dead had never truly been buried, as if they were clawing their way back to whisper accusations in her ear, to blame her, to seek revenge—

Tainted. The flowers were tainted. Just like her.

I was gonna say I wish there was more Duke/Wiley stuff out there but that just reminded me I have a whole fic about that which I have... not worked on in a while.

Things are finally calming down at work, so maybe I can start writing again after Gross Prophets? Also need to catch up on fics, my backlog just keeps growing since I don't wanna read a fic and just not leave a comment so I've been waiting until I'm in a headspace to comment.

...also need to figure out how to make that Pulp Musicals fan game because MAN do I want it to exist. (I'd call it an otome, but there's not really much dating/romance? More like Long Live The Queen, if you ever played that game, where there are a multitude of bad endings and only one good one. Technically the ending that's the "fail state" isn't too bad because nobody dies, but I just double-checked and aside from the null ending there are 15 possible endings planned and all but one of them are bad endings.)

i fucking love prereading. getting documents about what's going to be discussed in a meeting and reading them and then going to the meeting and having context for all the things that are happening. if i could do this in all areas of life i would. send me a list of the words i'm going to need the definition of in order to understand what you will be talking about. give me a rundown of what topics might come up during this social encounter. provide detailed documentation of what to expect in a new setting. i will read the fuck out of that shit.
