The Marauders at a sleepover:

JUNGIAN COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS ARE REALLY NEUROTRANSMITTERS

Dopamine (Ne) is all about exploration, novelty, and active engagement with the world. It’s testing, experimenting, seeing what works, and staying open to multiple perspectives in real time. It’s "what if" thinking, bouncing between ideas, trying them out, and learning through trial and error. This is why the dopamine pathway is short and reactive, driving people to act quickly and be highly responsive to stimuli.

Acetylcholine (Ni) is much more about conception, depth, and refinement. It’s about filtering through possibilities, refining, and finding the most efficient path. This is more about a long-term vision, where you discount distractions and focus on what’s likely to work based on deep internal understanding. Like Ni, acetylcholine works with refined material, builds on past knowledge, and strives for clarity over time. Quality control over quantity. The pathway is longer, as it requires more time for reflection and synthesis.

Norepinephrine (Se) = Sensory Engagement / External Stimulation: Norepinephrine is often about stimulation, arousal, and action in the present moment, which matches Se's focus on immediate sensory input and the world outside. Se engages directly with external stimuli, maximizing the sensory experience—seeing, hearing, touching, and reacting to what's right in front of them, seeking novel or impactful experiences. Norepinephrine similarly drives people to engage with their surroundings, often seeking intensity and excitement. Both want to be in the moment and responsive to the environment.

GABA = Si (Introverted Sensing): GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter, meaning it calms down neural activity and contributes to a sense of stability, relaxation, and grounding. This is highly similar to Si, which is about internal sensory recall, stability, and creating a grounded mental state based on past experiences. Just like Si helps us process and stabilize memories and experiences, GABA contributes to calmness and internal balance.

Ooops. Clickbait. Only the perceiving functions can be directly associated with neurotransmitters but here is why:

Perceiving functions (Ne, Ni, Se, Si) are more fundamental in terms of information gathering and conceptualizing because they deal with raw data, sensory input, and ongoing experience. These are processes that happen almost automatically and are more closely tied to the REACTIONS of the brain to immediate stimuli, which is where neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine, GABA, and serotonin come into play.

Judging functions, on the other hand, are higher-order, more abstract, and deal with organizing, categorizing, and deciding how to act on the information the perceiving functions gather. These processes tend to be more cognitive, involving more logical, computational thinking (yes, fi too!), which requires less direct chemical input and is mediated by higher-level brain areas like the prefrontal cortex. They are more internalized, less reactive to real-time input, and more about evaluating and controlling the data.

Proof that Tony Stark is not an extravert

Well, I’d bet it’s better results than one could get on YouTube, Twitter, or Reddit, but come on.

I’m going to show you why MCU Tony is certainly not an extravert.

I've already posted some stuff, such as:

As you can see, Tony has some issues that hint to us that he’s not always present or outgoing. And now it’s time to gather all these and other things and summarize our findings.

Extraversion: Large social network & Thrive in teams, crowds vs Introversion: Value 1:1 friendships & Favor independence

Tony no doubt knows a lot of people. Because he ran a huge technological company, right. Business partners, military officers, politicians, SHIELD agents, journalists, his staff, etc. Although this doesn’t mean that he communicates with many people regularly, or has many friends. And we know he doesn’t. He never had many friends. Throughout the Infinity Saga, he made a few, like Pepper and Happy. But before IM2 his only friends were Rhodey, J.A.R.V.I.S., and his bots.

He mostly interacted with AIs and robots, especially in his solo movies. This tells us something, doesn’t it? I’ll write a separate post about his childhood, but it is obvious that he was always an outcast: in school, college, before the Avengers, within the Avengers… We don’t really see him as a “gear” in this mechanism. He is most often steps ahead of others or steps aside. None of the Avengers were really his friends, and I’ll write about that too in the future.

Did he try to make more friends? He seemed to think some of the Avengers were. He thought Steve was. Remember this?

Or Bruce. But Bruce didn't even want to listen to him when Tony needed help.

And he left him at the end of AoU. But Tony thought he was a friend. Moreover, he considered them all his family.

That’s what he was doing – everyone around him, from assistants to teammates, were considered friends and family members and were treated accordingly. He needed that, not a large social network of "pals" and "buddies" he barely knows.

Let’s illustrate how he felt about people around him:

Deleted scene "Dubai Party" from IM (2008)

Tony doesn’t really talk to those people. He doesn't feel comfortable shaking their hands or taking anything from them. That's not why he's here, it's an alibi for the mission in Afghanistan. And we see that all this causes him disgust and discomfort.

The Charity Ball - IM (2008)

And boom - he doesn't know that Christina is talking about Jericho, which Stein sold to the Ten Rings. He thinks she is referring to this event. And he (surprisingly) reveals that he actually has social anxiety. That doesn't sound like an extrovert to me.

Alternate Opening from IM2 shows us Tony, who is trying to avoid going on some kind of dangerous mission. And then we find out that that mission is actually the Expo Opening. He doesn’t look excited that he has to go to the crowd, doesn’t he?

After that, he makes his way through the crowd of fans, communicating with virtually no one.

At the Senate hearing, he seems bored. He doesn’t pay much attention to the politicians, asking Pepper about chili, hacking networks, and making fun of Senator Stern.

After he’s done with Hammer and Stern he shows his public mask to others. We know he is not comfortable with this situation, but he has to deal with it.

At the party "Natalie wears the gauntlet" deleted scene from IM2

This is what Tony really thinks about these people. He doesn’t like them, doesn’t like this lifestyle. He didn’t want this party in the first place.

Sounds very introvert-like to me.

He wears sunglasses in public. Because he is uncomfortable when people see his eyes - they cannot hide from them what he wants to hide. And that brings us to the next trait…

Extraversion: Enjoy being a center of attention vs Introversion: Avoid being a center of attention

He hides behind sunglasses. Most of the time, he only shows his mask to people he considers strangers. When he's the center of attention, it's his mask, not the real Tony.

The real Tony refused to be the commander of the Avengers, despite being their benefactor and providing them with everything. The real Tony didn't go to important public events on behalf of the team, Natasha (WS and CW) did. The real Tony left the Avengers at his Compound and went to live with his family in a cabin in the middle of nowhere. And, again, we can recall what he said about his birthday and parties in general.

Extraversion: Think out loud vs Introversion: Think before speaking

Tony is not the guy who shares his thoughts with others. He thinks a lot. And he hides most of it from others.

Does he always think before speaking? No, not at all. But that’s his goofy personality, not extraversion.

Extraversion: Energize around people & seek greater stimulation vs Introversion: Recharge, reflect in quiet & Seek less stimulation

As we can see, Tony is not that much of a people person. He avoids gatherings when he can, and doesn’t enjoy them when he can’t. Most of the time he spends in his workshop/lab with his AIs, bots, and sometimes with Bruce, with occasional visits from Pepper and Rhodey. And he is comfortable in this environment.

With the Avengers he doesn’t act like an energy battery. Instead, he is quiet, calm, and just minds his own business. Look at the scenes from AoU:

At the party he doesn't talk to many people, we see him in a small group of Thor and Maria Hill, and he is, again, pretty quiet.

In Endgame he lives with just his wife, daughter, chickens, and Gerald the alpaca in a cabin, far from other people and their noise. He has nature around, a big fireplace, and paper books to read by it. This is his happiness. An introvert's dream.

Conclusion: all the extraversion we see in Tony came from his business training that started when he was a kid. He had to develop a set of skills: communicating with many people, participating in gatherings, selling stuff, running a company, dealing with journalists and politicians. He became the owner of a huge business when he was only 21 years old. Of course, he has skills formed by decades of experience. But we see he doesn’t enjoy doing all this stuff. This is not his comfort zone. His comfort zone is his lab and a few close friends. It's hard to tell from the masks he wears and his skills whether he's an introvert or an ambivert who tends to be introverted, but he's definitely not an extravert.

P.S. This is not a 100% comprehensive review of everything I've seen in the movies. There are many more examples of his introversion in the MCU. INTP's Needs in a Relationship

I've been in the same relationship for 8.5 years (and we actually MET ON TUMBLR BECAUSE OF THIS BLOG WHICH IS SO FUNNY AND NERDY), all of this to say, I've had a lot of time to think about my relationship needs even from the MBTI perspective as an INTP, because that was how my ENFJ and I kinda started out getting to know, like, what we each needed from each other, so, here we go!

Disclaimer: This is assuming that the INTP is already getting everything that everyone needs in a basic healthy relationship like, you know, feeling emotionally safe and being treated with respect, etc..

Intellectual stimulation: INTPs generally love understanding new things and how they work, so ideally their partner can share that interest with them in some way! They can be pretty curious people, so joining them in their quest for uncovering the "how" and "why" of everything will make them feel understood, themselves, and closer to you in the process!

Clear explanations of your feelings: Because INTPs have inferior Fe, they tend to have a habit of intellectualizing their own emotions when they talk about them, which can cause complications with understanding other people's emotions, too. Finding a way to be patient and know that even healthy INTPs might still struggle with connecting with other people's emotions (especially at first in a relationship) isn't necessarily because they don't want to, but more that it doesn't always come naturally, so they don't always know how to. If they're a healthy person, they will want to understand, just try not to take it personally while they are practicing/learning!

Alone time: This one should be pretty straight-forward lmao. They're introverted, so they like to recharge doing solo-activities, and they're intuitives, so they have their own little theoretical world full of bizarre ideas to entertain themselves with that might not always be easy to follow at first. I find that introverts in general (maybe the INxx types even moreso) like to engage in parallel play where their partner also does something quietly nearby, but still a separate activity. As an INFJ, yourself, I'm sure you can relate in your own way, so it's likely easy to give them what they need!

Humor them/hear them out: This might sound a little vague, and I guess in some ways it is, but this is mostly about their auxiliary Ne. ENTPs and ENFPs get most of the attention when it comes to high Ne, but INTPs (and INFPs, too!) place a lot of importance on it, too, which can often manifest itself in conversations like "what if __", "imagine if __", etc.. To put it bluntly, it might seem a bit... directionless, and that's because sometimes it kind of is! It's just about thinking of random possibilities that are non-serious and funny in the moment, and don't really go anywhere else outside of the current discussion or hold any larger, overarching significance. Sometimes it's less about the actual topic itself, and more about having some random fun and "playing along" that makes a world of a difference to a playful INTP (or high Ne user in general). This point got away from me a little bit which I think, in a way, is the perfect exemplification of what I was trying to say in the first place, lmao. Hope that makes sense! If your INTP ever sounds like whatever the hell I just said, just try not to disengage right away, because they probably have a point that they are struggling to reach. Put that dom Ni to work and summarize it for them, I know you can do it from experience with my own ENFJ lmao.

Anyway, uhhhhh: Every single point on this list has gotten progressively longer because my Ne loves extrapolating (and I love Ne, but sometimes its gotta CHILL you know?), so I'm gonna end it here before it gets WILDLY OUT OF CONTROL.

Silm Advent calendar 14: Fire

Some headcanons strongly assumed in this one.

Mithrandir rotated the ring on his finger. The moonlight reflected in the ruby, making it seem like a flame. Fire…

There was a Light he remembered but could not remember, it was incompatible with how he was now, like awakening and dream. Too large to fit in his mind. No, it's always been too great. But now even the memory of the experience…

Melian had warned him that being bound to a body would be difficult, but he hadn't expected to be so lost. And now Círdan had made it even more difficult.

The moon reflecting on the sea was silver, but Mithrandir’s thoughts — contrary to the name he had taken — were filled with red.

There was a flame he could, unfortunately, remember with more clarity, now it felt even more natural, and this worried him greatly. He turned away from it long ago, longer than time itself was long, and yet, the memory kept coming back.

Why, of all the things, did he always have to deal with fire?

There were fires he remembered from the War — so far changed from the gold-white brilliance they'd once been — hopefully all gone now, except for one beautiful flame that now rested, to rise in the next morning. Arien. One of the closest, and yet one of the first to leave. Where would he be now if it wasn't for her?

Somewhere less difficult maybe, but not in a good way.

Still, why did it always come back to fire?

Círdan stood in the door of his home. Mithrandir sighed and gestured at the bench, moving to the side.

“I left Glorfindel with some books,” said the shipwright.

“He's quite enthusiastic, isn't he? So full of light…”

Círdan smiled slightly. “Like a haystack, not like a hearth.”

They sat in silence for a while, as Tilion moved through the sky and waves roared. After a while, Mithrandir spoke again.

“You don't know how hot a hearth can get.”

“I know when I see someone who knows restraint. And you do have more experience than Glorfindel. Both with hearths and with hearts.”

“You don't know the nature of my experience!” Mithrandir turned to Círdan, facing him straight. His heart pounded.

“Really?” The elf was unfazed, even smiling slightly. “I'm just a simple elf, but I'm not blind. You came here, having put upon yourself more limitations than your colleagues, and yet embodiment comes to you so naturally that I'd never guess who you are had I not seen you arrive. Also, you feel more like a Man than like one of us. Can't sit straight, can't find a place for yourself. Full of fire. And now, instead of reading, or sleeping, or talking so much about animals that even Glorfindel looks quiet in the comparison, you brood alone in the night. Indeed, I do wonder what your experience could possibly be.”

Mithrandir sat deeper in the bench. After all this time… “I— didn't mean to brood. I'm sorry.”

Círdan patted him on the arm. “It's fine. Most elves brood too when they come here. It's the perspective of sailing. I'm accustomed to dealing with the mood of others. And I have to admit that I have deceived you a little.”

“About?”

“I don't think I would have noticed those signs, or understand what they mean, without some hints.”

Mithrandir closed his eyes. “Seaside dreams, I guess? But why—”

“Just some friendly gossip.” There was laughter in Cirdan’s voice, and a distant echo of a storm, but his face was serious.

“And yet you gave it to me.”

“Whom else?’

“Curunir. Glorfindel—experience can be learned. Anyone.”

The shipwright studied him carefully. “I have to admit, I did not know for certain where you came from when I made the decision.”

“Now you know. You can imagine what I could do with hearts if— You can imagine.”

“And yet, if the past allegiance had always been a good predictor of the present, the world would be much brighter and you would not need to be here now.”

Mithrandir pulled Narya off his finger. “And this would not exist. Tell me, how can two results of a wrong make a right?” He gave the ring back to Círdan.

“Are you certain?”

He nodded. The worst thing that could happen was another one falling into shadow. “Give it to someone worthy.”

The elf took it and nodded. “Thank you. I will feel better knowing that I gave it to you knowing the whole context.” He offered it back to Mithrandir. “As for how to make right out of wrong — you tell me. Not now. But I trust you will.”

“With who I am? Círdan, I begged not to have to come here!”

“And yet you came. You asked me to give it to someone worthy, but the worthy ones sometimes end up…” He winced. “I'd rather give it to someone who will use it to do good. Will you?”

Mithrandir bowed his head. “I'll do my best.” Slowly he took Narya back.

Círdan stood up. “Go get some sleep. You need it now.”

He did, and he dreamed of fire.

I am coming to love leaf too. To me she is also autistic. But instead of having a very blank 😐 face like red she defaults to 🙂 to come off as more friendly. Red isnt Unfriendly he just has the flat affect of all time and doesn't bother/never learned how to mask/force himself to emote 'properly' in social settings. Leaf also technically isn't the best at emoting "normally" she just defaults to the 😃🙂 smile which can be either very sweet and friendly or can make people a little uncomfortable if it's not the type of situation you'd typically smile in. Also I like the idea of her and red being twins. The autism sisters insert that meme of the cats.
