@riva_g_ on Handy Helpers 🖐 ・・・ If you're working on your handstand & the first part of this video looks all too familiar, (ie. 'kicking your feet up & hoping they just stay there'), I have news for you: many of us have been there before... 🙋🏻‍♀️ And you shouldn’t sweat it because balancing on your hands is hard! It’s a skill that takes time, patience, practice, & dedication. 🙌🏼 But if you’re looking to get a little more hang time in this pose, allow me to give you a hand(stand)... 🤦🏻‍♀️ ( #sorrynotsorry 😂) Below are 4 exercises to help you with the strength & alignment needed in handstand. For most of these moves you’ll want to wear a pair of non-slips socks (to protect the tops of your feet & to prevent you from slipping) 👣. The socks I’m wearing here are from @gaiam (available at @target - I’ll post the link in my bio for the next 24 hours): 🔸 Floor Tucks: Press your hands firmly down into the ground as you lift your hips all the way up. Keep your core engaged & arms strong. (3 sets of 8) 🔸 Pike Slides: From high plank (with tops of feet on floor), press the ground away from you & use your core to lift your hips up. Bring your legs in toward your arms, then slide back to plank. (3 sets of 8) 🔸 Handstand Shrugs: Facing the wall, get your body as close to the wall as you can. Completely straighten your arms, then imagine trying to make yourself taller just by shrugging your shoulders. Then relax the shoulders, but keep the arms straight the whole time. (3 sets of 8) 🔸 L Handstand: Walk the feet up the wall, until the legs are parallel to the ground & shoulders are over the hips. Lift one leg at a time, keeping the core engaged & shoulders over the hips. (10 reps) When you’re ready, slowly bring the second leg up. Remember: 👇🏼 🔹DON’T force anything. "Find what feels good," -Adriene Mishler. Words to apply in every aspect of life. A phrase difficult to honor and remember, but so powerful. Food and I have never been friends. Years ago, my mind placed an aversion against food that I fight with every day. Yet, with patience and self-care, I begin to heal. Good Morning, everyone! I'm officially back from my work trip. I'm so excited to be home, especially after being gone for 27 days. You all have been an amazing support for for me. I love you all so much. ___ Pre-church 10 minute Yoga Fix with @yogastudioapp (@gaiam). These short videos help to start my day. I have developed some issues in my hips. Fascia mobility roll out! 😊 Mobility and flexibility is such an important part of training. We need our joints and muscles to be able to move freely and properly. If not, these restrictions in our body can lead to major problems. The body WILL compensate somewhere for lack of mobility/restriction. #Everybodybends ...I've had a rough few days, but the time on my mat has kept me centered and renewed my resolve - for however long it remains within my power - to age as gracefully as possible through movement, my yoga journey and the plant-based lifestyle I adopted about 16mts ago!💚 And sidenote... can you believe the two eldest women in this photo (my mom-in-law and aunt) are 67 and 79 years old?!? • Now a little recounting of the past couple days... A tough-as-nails 87y.o. widowed neighbor was found collapsed (but thankfully alive) in her home. I met her a couple summers ago during her daily afternoon walk up and back down the street. I admired her! And one day, with my little in tow, I stopped her and told her so. I asked her name, chatted long enough to become even more inspired by her, her story and her drive; and have been shouting her out ever since. • Last summer, we had a bad storm here that knocked out power for hours. I was headed out the next day to run an errand and saw her out walking... SURPRISE. But when I stopped her, I found out that her power was still out and it was so hot in her house she just wanted to get out and get some air. While I was out, I was able to get a hold of the power company for her. By the time I got back to her, she was with a caregiver and waiting for a tech to help at her home. • Fast forward to Friday evening... emergency vehicles were found outside of her home. No family nearby and no regular caregiver visits, she'd been found on the floor after 4 days. But you know what.... NOT A BROKEN BONE. EIGHTY SEVEN YEARS OLD. And still her witty and spunky self! There's much more to this still unfolding story but just thankful for the time my family has been able to spend with her and prayerfully hoping she gets back to 💯% soon. • There are lots of things rolling around in my head, but I share this part of the story because one of the thoughts resonating with me is the shear amazement at how a strong will and physical activity keeps you going at all ages.

@riva_g_ on Delicious Hollows ❤️ ・・・ Forearm Wheel Hollowback tutorial - because so many of you asked about this pose! 😍 This beautiful backbend was something I once only dreamed of doing, so if you’re still at the stage where the first part of this video looks all too relatable, don’t sweat it! 😅 And you definitely shouldn’t fret if this seems really far off - it’s an advanced asana with a very deep backbend, & on top of that shifting the gaze is super challenging! #giveittime 👌🏼 But when you are ready to start practicing this posture, below are 6 ways you can use yoga blocks to help make it more accessible. ❤️ The blocks I’m using here are from @gaiam & are available at @target (posting the link in my bio for the next 24 hours): 🔸 Open the Upper Back: Place one or two blocks (depending on your flexibility) between the shoulder blades, or just under your shoulder blades. (2-4 min) 🔸 Shoulder & Triceps Stretch: Place both blocks shoulder-width apart on the highest setting. Rest your elbows on the blocks & lower your head & heart. (1-3 min) 🔸 Backbend Prep: Wheel & Forearm Wheel with a block in between the legs will help keep your adductors engaged & your feet parallel (hello safe knees! 👋🏼). (5 breaths, 3 reps) 🔸 With Blocks, Against the Wall: A great opportunity to practice a more accessible variation of this backbend without having to worry about the balance. The further you are from the wall, the less deep the bend. You can start playing with the gaze shift here too. 😍 🔸 With Block(s), Away from the Wall: When you’re ready to move away from the wall, use one (or two blocks stacked) to keep the backbend more accessible (& to help keep forearms parallel). 🙌🏼 Remember: 👇🏼 🔹DON’T force anything. Listen to your body, & take your time. When people think about yoga, one of the first things they say is, "That's for flexible people. I'm not flexible, so I can't do it." They look at everyone in class or on social media, self-conscious for not being able to hit a "picture perfect pose." Yoga is not about being flexible, but gives you tools to find space in your body and life. It is about connecting to your inner teacher, voice, and energy. I was a dancer for several years and realized I had motion in my hips, but not my shoulders and wrists. No body is "perfect," every one has strengths and weaknesses, which are beautiful. It took time, lots of learning to move from my core, my center of energy, to be comfortable here. Now it is my go to pose for stress and anxiety, or just when I need a fresh perspective. All things take practice, negotiating space, and most importantly, mindfulness. Rather than saying you cannot, what if you decide to proudly find a way to shift that works for you?
