There is a feast to welcome her that night. Given her role in the proceedings Lily should rightly be at the king's table, beside her future husband — her mind skips, like a skittish colt, over this thought — or amongst the swirling dancers. But there are consequences to having been plucked from an isolated country manor and dropped in the middle of court. The dances are unfamiliar; she knew by the way Mary had sucked in a breath while helping her dress that her clothing is out of fashion too.

She has so much to learn. She's sore all over from the journey and her feet ache in her slippers and her head pounds from the weight of her hood but she can't afford to focus on any of that. She has too much to learn.

"The women," she prompts Mary in a low voice.

They are taking a turn beyond the perimeter of the dancers, occasionally making a show of greeting courtiers. Their faces slide out of Lily's memory like warm butter, as desperately as she tries to keep hold of them.

"If any of the ladies wish they were queen in your stead, they know better than to show it so easily," Mary replies, her dark eyes scanning the court restlessly. "Save Lady Yaxley, because her family is too well entrenched for her to fear how it looks."

Lily swallows a wry smile; would that she knew such confidence. "Her father..."

"Lord Yaxley has sat on the council for as long as she's been alive." There's a quiet rebuke in Mary's gaze. "As long as any of us have been."

"Oh. Right. I'll remember now," she assures her lady-in-waiting, swallowing a flash of defensiveness. Mary is right. She shouldn't have needed to ask. "Might she have? Been queen?"

They pause to greet a woman and her young daughters. Both girls have such bright, awed expressions, as if they cannot believe they are allowed to be here so late, amongst all the activity, face to face with a strange new queen. Lily wonders what she looks like to them.

"I doubt it," says Mary once they're out of earshot. "But..."

"But?"

She doesn't answer. She's watching the dancers, where the king has finally been coaxed to join a lively number by a small, dark-skinned woman Lily has already met.

"Lady Meadowes," Lily murmurs, hardly daring to let the name shape her lips.

"She doesn't want him," Mary says. "Neither for position, nor for love."

A frown. "How can you be sure?"

That is not to say that they look like lovers. They look like old friends. There is a comfort to the king now that he does not have around her — though she cannot fault either him or Lady Dorcas for that, given that she, Lily, has known him less than a day. Again her exhaustion gives way to utter helplessness. She has so much to learn.

"She's quite open about it," replies Mary blithely. "I would suspect she protests too much, but — she is popular at court, her family is well-liked, and she has known the king for years. If she wanted to marry him, she would be married to him."

"And so...?"

"She may bear you no ill will. But others may on her behalf."

She considers this in silence. Lady Dorcas was unfailingly polite to her earlier in the day; it might do to be wary of her still, for a time, but Mary's is a point well made. Lily thinks she can safely say this is one of her lady companions who is unlikely to despise her.

"Only a half-dozen more to survive," she sighs.

“Sirius, no!” Remus shouted, as the boy in question marched over to Jamie’s and Lily’s table. 

“Well, hello there snivellus. Looking positively greasy today aren’t we?” Sirius taunted. 

“What are you doing here Black?” Snape sneered. 

Sirius hummed before responding, “We just fancied a dinner here. What about you?”

“Looking for something to grease?” Marlene chimed. 

“Marlene,” Lily warned. 

“Thought I’d visit my friend Lily here. That’s all Black,” Snape answered. 

“More like crash her date,” Dorcas muttered, as she joined the group around Lily and Jamie’s table with Remus, Mary, and Peter.

“I am not your friend Snape.” Lily stood up, accompanied by Jamie.

“Lily!” The greasy haired man faced her pleadingly, “I care about you a lot. That’s why I’m telling you to not date Potter! Thinking that you’re bi may well just be a phase that’ll go away, Lily. Moreover, she doesn’t really care about you! She just thinks that you are some sort of prize to be won.” 

Jamie looked like she wanted to dislocate Snape’s jaw, her fists curled at her sides. But the warning glance Lily threw her, made her insides calm down 

“You know nothing about me Snape,” Lily said, with gritted teeth. “Now go away before I dislocate your nose.” Sirius whistled in support. 

“Lily, we’ve been best friends since we were ten. I know you, Lily. Please listen to me,”

“If you were my best friend you’d have supported me instead of behaving like an ignorant ass. Now please go away.”

“Lily, please.”

Barely a moment later, Lily’s fist connected with Snape’s nose. Blood leaked down his front, while the rest of the gang rushed to vocally support her. 

 “You’ll regret that Lily!” Snape glared threateningly. 

Before long, Sirius had tackled Snape to the ground, and accidentally splattered the lasagna the waiter was bringing over to their table, on Snape’s head. 

“I...“ Lily began.

“You can save your breath, Lils,” Sirius started, “he’s a harmless, entitled prick”

“Looks like you have a lot of grease to get rid of, Snep,” Marlene announced. 

“And Snep, pro tip: the only shampoo that keeps the grease at bay is the Sleakeasy shampoo. You should try it out!” Jamie, ever so helpful, advised, and moved to position her hand behind Lily’s back. 

“Sorry about that Sir, we’ll cover the charges for the ill-fated lasagna,” Sirius apologised to the waiter as he helped him up from the ground.

The waiter simply looked baffled. However, he nodded and successfully escorted Snape out of the restaurant. 

“Now this is going to be quite the first date story to tell at the wedding.” Peter spoke up for the first time since they gathered at the table between the hydrangeas and the windows. 

Jamie blushed and looked around, anywhere but at Lily, though her hand never left Lily’s back, while the redhead laughed at her.

“Well, since we’re all together, we can have dessert and you can continue spying on us while sitting at our table,” Lily said. “Nice ears you’ve got there, Sirius. Though I’d prefer Dorcas’s floppy hat.”

“Yeah! I personally love the whiskers, Pete. Seriously, Marlene? A gily suit? Inconspicuous much? And Remus, you have enough sense to stop them!” Jamie put on. 

Remus just shrugged, his big crescent shaped moon hat toppling Mary’s tree hat downwards. “Sorry,” he said, bending to pick it up. 

“Thanks,” she said, when he gave the hat to her, “why did we agree to wear these again?”

“So we would be incognito, Mary”

“And we were successful! These oblivious dorks didn’t even realise that it was us until old snivelly pointed it out,” Sirius stated.

“Also, we did have ice-cream before coming here, so you guys should continue, we’ll leave,” Dorcas said. 

“Hey! We didn’t get to eat that ice-cream! You and Remus took it from us,” Marlene reprimanded. 

“Yeah! So we’ll be staying here and you guys can shoo away,” Sirius included. 

“Well in that case you can all leave and get yourselves ice cream while Lily and I can finally enjoy our date,” Jamie, now pushing Sirius, and shoo-ing the others to the doors, said. 

“Say what you want Jamie, I am enjoying our date,” expressed Lily. 

“You are?” Jamie turned around, completely forgetting the others in the room. 

“Well, looks like they’re more nauseating and lame than before. Should we go?” Asked Marlene. 

“Nah. Let’s just sit outside and spy on them through the window,” Sirius smirked.

By listening to the first songs, you would classify them as a classic rock band, and a good one at that. Call my title clickbait-y all you want, my readers know I only write the truth. And the truth is that London’s newest rock band the Marauders are sweet on the eyes. You might have heard Stare , which is their most popular number, on the radio. And if you’ve ever seen a picture of lead vocalist James Potter, you will wish he was singing it to you the next time you hear it! The young singer is the son of philanthropists Fleamont and Euphemia Potter and if his music career doesn’t work out, his inheritance already makes him into a very eligible bachelor. My sources tell me he’s still single, so the game is on! May the best lady win.

But no worries, there are enough men to go around! The three other members are just as attractive. You might recognize Sirius Black from his short career in modeling. He posed for several pieces for Walburga Black’s line when he was a child, but we all know about his dramatic falling out with his family since. ( Black heir disowned? ) It’s a shame he won’t model anymore, because I don’t get tired of looking at him. And his mysterious troubled past only adds to the charm!

The other members, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew, while more discreet, are just as handsome. There’s less drama surrounding their names… for now! I’ll be on the lookout!

Last week, the Potter foundation held its annual fundraising gala, and this year’s goal was to support LGBTQ+ shelters. The presence of the Marauders was no surprise for anyone, since James Potter is the band’s lead vocalist and guitar player. The band arrived on the stage unannounced and performed a few songs, to the crowd’s delight. The biggest surprise, however, came after their set. Piano player Sirius Black remained on stage to hold a speech about his own experience with homophobia. Rumours surrounding his sexuality had first surfaced several years ago when his family publicly disowned him, but neither party had commented on it. In a moving speech, Sirius finally put an end to the gossip and came out as gay. He opened up about his difficult childhood and thanked the Potters for taking him in. But rather than detailing everything he said, I would rather you see it for yourself. Remember when the internet went crazy for a picture of our beloved James with a mysterious woman on a bus? Well she’s no longer a mystery! IfJames Potter’s recent tweet left you with any doubt about his relationship with Lily Evans aka @flowerevans, yesterday’s pics will clear it up. The two were seen at upcoming photographer Dorcas Meadowes’ gallery opening and looked pretty cosy. The two left the event hand in hand and kissed just outside the venue. What a lucky girl!

But who is this Lily Evans? There’s not much about her on the internet but digging through her twitter will tell you that she’s part Irish and a chemist, so I guess our James has a thing for intellectuals. Sirius Black wasn’t meant to live in poverty. From the day he was born, he could have whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted. It wasn’t until he got a little older and started blatantly questioning the activities happening around him that he got his first taste of how twisted his family was. He learned to keep his mouth shut until he went to Hogwarts, though. It was meeting James, the boy his age from a family he grew up hearing terrible things about. Bloodtraitors. Muggle-lovers. A five minute conversation on the train had Sirius questioning his whole life.

After that, he met Peter who was a half-blood but possibly the kindest person he had ever met. And then there was Remus. He really had to rewire his brain for Remus, because though he was one of the most genuine humans he’d never met, he was also a werewolf. And Sirius had been bred to believe in the dangers of them. The final straw that chucked every last bit of connection he had to his family was the exile and subsequent death of Alphard Black. His uncle had been the only person that seemed uncomfortable by physical abuse and open scrutiny of anyone deemed lesser than them.

In 1975, he brought home a muggle woman and though Sirius didn’t understand it, his uncle (the only person in his family aside from his younger brother that he felt unbridled love for) seemed happier than he ever had. It confused the young boy immensely when his own family threw him out and told him never to come back, lest he correct his tragic ways. A year later, that woman went missing and Alphard Black ended his life. His oldest nephew ran away from home when his mother wore white the whole next week displaying the most outrageous sign of disrespect Sirius had ever seen. He would never look back on them, and he would always fault them for the death of his uncle. There was no going back after that.

It was the ultimate rebellion. When Dumbledore sat him down and asked him to join the Order of the Phoenix, his answer was (unsurprisingly) immediate and impulsive. Sirius didn’t quite know what he was getting himself into, but he knew he was standing up for something much bigger than himself. He was fighting for his uncle, his friends who were dear to him and couldn’t help where they came from, and those who weren’t able to fight for themselves. His decision to join felt right, like there was nothing more befitting of the disgraced rebel boy, Sirius Black.

James was the friend that could always be counted on. His loyalty was stronger than the gravity surrounding the earth and nothing could change his mind once he made it up. Occasionally that was something of an annoyance about him, but very rarely to Sirius. He had weaseled his way in with the golden boy, securing a lifetime spot as something good beside him. He would be eternally grateful to James for that, because it was too easy to feel himself slipping. He loved the people he surrounded himself with now, but it would be so easy to do exactly what had always been asked of him. It was an extremely fleeting thought. Sirius was firm in his stance against his family, unwavering in his love of his friends. It was just the old thoughts that came to him sometimes. James was the person he went to, nonjudgmental in his entirety - especially in his old age. He was the one person Sirius could confide in without worry, because he had the absolute highest regards for the friends he chose.

The friendship they held had always been odd. From the start, Sirius had seen Remus Lupin as a sickly, skinny little thing that obviously came from a family of little financial value. He kept to himself at first, but James had been determined to make their threesome into four. They lived together, they needed to be friends was his constant excuse. Sirius, on the contrary, felt like it wasn’t their place to force the kid to hang out with them. Later on, he became grateful for James’ persistence, because Remus was funny. Despite how closed-off he had been from the start, upon cracking open that cold, slightly frightened exterior, Remus revealed his intellect. He was wise beyond his years, had a whip quick wit, and was so sarcastic it was almost rude. They got along swimmingly after that because the second Remus opened his mouth, it was bound to be a catch and the other three boys were lucky they got to hear it.

Quiet, kind Peter wasn’t as mousy and timid as everyone seemed to think he was. He had a knack for flying under the radar that Sirius admired endlessly. The Marauders truly were like the gears in a clock when they got going, each taking up space but not overpowering the others. James was the central axis that brought them all together. Remus was the careful planning and detailed numbers. Sirius was gusto and color face, all raw emotion and impulsive thought. And Peter was the small hand. He ticked away, kept things going. He was the fly on the wall that you would miss if you weren’t specifically looking for him. That’s what Sirius noticed. Peter wasn’t timid and shy, he was crafty. Sneaky. It impressed him.

Dorcas Meadowes is the type of person that can look straight through the skin and see into the soul. Sirius noticed her in school by the way she treated others. The incident involving Mary and Mulciber spread around the grounds like the wildfire on the post office. They all knew the story. Mulciber used the imperius curse on Mary MacDonald and coerced her to set fire to the post office in Hogsmeade. This disabled the anti-apparition charms surrounding the school and every aspiring Death Eater left to join the Dark Lord. The professors managed to get the wards back up in an instance, making them infinitely stronger than they had been before. Mary wound up in the hospital wing with burns up and down her arms and a faded memory. Dorcas was by her side in an instant, something Sirius commended. He couldn’t imagine how he would feel if James were in Mary’s place, he in Dorcas’. He would have lost his mind, but the Ravenclaw girl handled it with a quiet grace that went almost entirely unnoticed. He approached her a few months after the incident and struck up a conversation. Things were rocky between the Marauders at the time because of a thoughtless prank Sirius pulled on Snape and he found himself wanting to get to know her. It was interesting to see someone who seemed so similar to himself from the outside. She, naturally, shot him down with a look of disgruntled contempt. This only made him admire her more, and eventually they became mates on the basis that she saw right through him and he got on her nerves. Though life separated them upon graduation, their reunion will likely prove that nothing much has changed between them.

“The only ultimatum I’m aware of that all people share is whether they should get breakfast or get more sleep. Apologies if it’s not scandalous enough for your readers to drool over during their afternoon tea.” 

Speaking of purebloods, I spotted you getting quite comfortable around none other than Lucious hair Malfoy. Tell us, do you fancy him? Is it the protective way he cares about his closet? Or have you set your eyes on some other boy/girl? 

“I’m comfortable around him because we grew up in the same circles. Last I heard, he was engaged, and happily so, by the looks of it. Narcissa is a beautiful, clever woman and I respect that. Instead of being a leach, I’d rather get my own happiness. As for anyone else, well, let’s just say no one else has piqued my interests. Or risen to my expectations.”

Now that we've entered the relationships part of this conversation, as a Gryffindor, do you really think McKinnon and Evans could come in the way of this castle's greatest love story -- Black Potter? Also, how does it feel being the fifth wheel? 

“Honestly, they could be standing at the alter, I wouldn’t know who’s marrying who, and I would still support them. I think the rest of the castle is in agreement with that. I’m sure they’re going to live happily ever after. Or not, I’m just there for the champagne, really. As for being a fifth … whatever, I think I’m okay watching that circus from the sidelines.”

+ THE STORY SO FAR +

The first Slytherin in a long line of Ravenclaws and Gryffindors, Marlene stood out right from the start of her little life. The only girl of seven children in a pureblooded family, she was given expectations the moment she exited the womb. In her formative years, she fought her mother to play like her sons did, a trail of cut ribbons and muddy footprints. The older she got, however, the stricter the woman became. She was in ballet and piano lessons from the time she could walk and comprehend on her own right up until she left for school. A brutally Spanish woman with a big family prior to making one of her own, aptly named Maria was slightly disgruntled by the idea of Hogwarts and preferred her daughter to attend Académie de Magie Beauxbâtons where all the Castillo women before her graduated.

Marlene had other ideas, however, and begged her father, an incredibly Scottish chap named Balgair, to convince her mother to allow her to attend school with her brothers. Going off to Hogwarts had been the lucid dream Marlene wished for her entire childhood. By then, however, her need for control was already a viscous beast clawing at the inside of her skull. She became a master of disguise, fooling almost everyone she met within the grounds of school that she was a picture perfect dream, untouchable in every way.

In the middle of her sixth year, things began to fall within her life. More and more, her house mates were disappearing from school, taking part in a war she, at the time, wanted nothing to do with. She didn’t speak her mind on the matter because it never matched. She started a downward spiral that ravaged her brittle bones and paper-thin skin, turned the whirling mess of her mind into a hurricane. Just before Christmas of her Seventh year, she was pulled from school.

Only three people know what really happened, though everyone could see how sickly she had grown. She would never return to Hogwarts, but instead (after spending nine months recuperating) be sent to France to finish her schooling at Beauxbatons. Her mother, though delighted that her only daughter would be attending her Alma mater, eased her grip on Marlene and began to treat her as her own being instead of the doll she had been trying to sculpt before. Aside from the three individuals who know the real story, there is a lot of speculation as to why Marlene left the school only to finish a semester later than her peers in another country.

Despite being of pureblood descent, Marlene’s father (unbeknownst to the ministry of magic) worked in a muggle hospital while her mother was a very successful auror in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. Knowing this, Albus Dumbledore recruited their systematically manipulative daughter feeling that her position (and previous positions) made her the perfect candidate for the Order of the Phoenix. Her answer was simple and firm. “I’ll do it,” because despite what she grew up around and the turmoil she faced in her younger days, Marlene knew right from wrong - and she longed to fight for magic and the muggles around her. At her heart of hearts, the girl who once longed for nothing more than something to control was good.

At the beginning of her sixth year, Marlene had been minding her own in an empty train compartment when a Gryffindor she knew but had never truly met trudged in on her with ink dripping from his shoe. She was fascinated by this handsome, bumbling boy messing up all the carpets. They both had scars but only his were visible, and yet even from that first moment, she felt like he could see hers. She was porcelain on the surface, her insides as marred and beaten as his exterior. Due to a fateful prank between Sirius Black and Severus Snape, Remus distanced himself from his closest friends for a while and in that, grew closer to the Slytherin girl they all seemed very much against for no real reason other than her affiliation and opportunistic timing. Perhaps the first person to truly get to know her in her most genuine moments, Remus was someone Marlene found equally compelling and terrifying. Shortly before her departure from school, they had a moment together that changed everything - something that crossed her mind from time to time even years later. They were hindered from discussing whatever could-have-been (perhaps gratefully) by her swift and tumultuous departure. He is one of three people that know why she truly left Hogwarts in December of 1976. She knows without a doubt that he will have been someone Dumbledore wanted to recruit and would be far too noble and tragic to turn him down. The idea of seeing him again after two and a half years is, ironically, both compelling and terrifying.

Marlene had been friends with Severus Snape once, and in this she met perhaps the most lively witch there ever was. Their relationship was never particularly deep, but they were always pleasant. Moreover, when Remus and Marlene grew close in their sixth year, Lily was there for it, also growing close with Marlene being that she was the only Gryffindor that didn’t see it as a terribly bad idea. Marlene could feel Lily’s faith in her and though it was akin to her childish faith in Severus when they were children, it wasn’t quite the same. Marlene couldn’t help feeling like Lily knew who she truly was. She could see the pure heart that sank beneath layers of pretending. When Marlene fell victim to her own mind, Lily had been there swiftly and fiercely. From the hospital wing to the Slytherin’s house in Inverness to Beauxbaton’s school, Spain and all the places in between, they stayed in touch over the years and through parchment have a strong kinship that outlasted the years.

Sheer dumb luck is what brought Dorcas Meadowes to Marlene’s side that night. They were in the same year, even shared a table a time or two in herbology or transfiguration, or something. It had been mortifying for Marlene, an almost stranger seeing her at her absolute worst. She was the girl who remained put together, always. The Slytherin Siren; pretty like a doll, charming like a friend, but manipulative and impersonal where it really counted. Dorcas Meadowes, though she resented her for it for a time, saved Marlene’s life. She’d sent her an owl eventually, perhaps a little too long afterwards, thanking her for being in the right place at the wrong time. If she hadn’t, Marlene feared to think what might have happened otherwise. Though they hadn’t seen each other in person since, she would always hold a special place in Marlene’s mind.

Maria McKinnon and Derek Bones were partners in the auror department and had been for years. Their families had been close most of their childrens’ lives, but it wasn’t until the older girl spent a travel year in France during Marlene’s year at Beauxbaton’s that they truly developed a close-knit understanding of each other. Having an equal love for coffee and sweets, old French artists, and staying out late, their casual kinship was a breath of fresh air for the both of them in some of their darkest times.
