okay, i wanna talk about this one part in wasps in winter that i love so bad.

when james and regulus are having conversation on the porch about death in the beginning, and james confesses that he' terrified of dying and hopes that there's someone waiting for him, someone that loves. him. waiting for him to make the whole dying thing easier that's a huge moment because !!!

when regulus is basically disappearing at the end of wasps in winter chapter 19, he says "it isn't goodbye forever" <- alluding to james' eventual death. and says "I’ll be waiting for you. Promise."

the someone who loves james that will be waiting for him when he does so it isn't scary is regulus.

this is regulus' love confession to james. and it's the last thing he ever does. the last thing from regulus that james ever hears.

oh my god, one of my favorite parts is the fact that im just jumping around from pov to pov. like as soon as a character gets close to revealing something about themselves, boom! pov shift. and it's really weird the way i'm doing it, in the sense that i'm not warning you. you're in barty's head one line and the next sentence we're internal monologuing with pandora.

probably really super confusing for the reader. probably really frowned upon in traditional writing. idk and idc! it's fun for me so it's stayingggggg we are ghosts jut floating through people's heads occasionally

also my other favorite part about writing this fic is dorlene. the dorelene in this fic is so fucked up and so fun and i just love them both so much. like i don't know what i would do if me and the love of my life had the same dream and only one of us got to achieve it. like. how do you not kill them? bc you love them. so you stay and torture yourself every day watching your partner live the life you always dreamed of? and you exhaust yourself being happy for them every single day while you do nothing with your life??? you're stagnate. because your other half took all that you are. like is the love worth it?? they make me crazy !!!!!! it's been so hard not to just write about them and their pov.

the entire fic is me like: "no. i can't laugh yet. i gotta hold it in" because everyone is just insane. bonkers!

what a time to be alive

at the time, i needed regulus to put the fear of god into sirius. fear is a powerful motivator for anyone but i think especially for the black family. and this is the scene where regulus is like "this is the moment the roles have changed. i have the power now." to me, i think in regulus' head, sirius has always sort of been the one acting and regulus is reacting. the older brother who can't quite get him, can't quite see him. regulus' actions in his life so far feel like a response to sirius' choices.

but now the script has flipped and sirius has to react based on what regulus' actions are (gun to remus' head (good lord)). this is the part where the scorned little brother demands to be seen. to be taken seriously (no pun intended).

i had the most fun writing it because it's insane. it's so unhinged. i was writing this in a dark ass dorm room late at night (more like early in the morning) vision blurry from staring at a screen too long, and i was gigglinggggggg bc wtf. i also remember being super freaking nervous about posting this chapter because i was gaining consciousness. and i realized that more and more people were not only reading this fic, but that they had a lot of opinions and theories about where it would go and i just remember not wanting to disappoint anyone,,, as silly as that sounds it was one of the first chapters i got posting anxiety about somewhat!

i am pretty happy with the unhinged-ness of the scene (from what i can recall,,, i can't go back and read it without taking psychic damage atm) i do remember i had evan just chilling w his pink bubblegum blowing bubbles w a gun to someone's head. super casual, you know. in one iteration remus was gonna get grazed by a bullet just for fear factor but the other ppl in the house would've heard a gun go off and they would have gotten nosey and snooped. so it could not have happened

HELLOOO nat love your fics! re: the directors cut ask game. im super interested to hear your thoughts on the scene in winterlude where james and regulus talks about art conservation + the book james reads on it. and just like, your thoughts writing the scene?

(especially because in AHB they very much do the opposite of conservation, by taking art out of public galleries to be sold privately. im kinda curious about the juxtaposition in your fics, and like do you think art deserves to be preserved forever or is the destruction/disappearance of it part of its intrigue/value?)

winterlude regulus is someone who is very much In His Shell. this is something that james notices about him and realizes that if he wants to make a connection with regulus (have any connection with regulus at all) he's going to have to meet regulus more than half way. so he does this by taking an interest in what regulus is most interested in and comfortable with (Kinda overstepping a bit in the process but that's james). that's why he takes one of regulus' books and reads it to talk to him about it! <- this is also the first moment regulus starts to be less in his head with james and more comfortable when they go out for pizza and he's like "wait, i know this topic of conversation inside and out. i'm not worried about getting this wrong bc this is so much of who i am" and i think it's a real breakthrough in jegulus' relationship there

that book also talks about the ways preserving and restoring art is different and how they work together, but honestly (like james) i always just lumped conservation and restoration together and called it a day so it was a fun little tidbit to put in to make other art lovers like me think about 😋

***also also, all the textbooks mentioned in winterlude are real ! and you can read the very same one that james read to impress regulus as a pdf for free here! hahaha (don't super recommend tho)

also, while i do think art crimes are sexy in theory, in practice i am not a fan. because the destruction and disappearance of said art feels like such a loss to me. i'm also against the privatization of art. in my ideal world all art would be accessible to the public. we lose so much of it to warehouses because ppl keep fine art as collateral or as an investment but don't want to pay the taxes on importing the art so the paintings just sit. in warehouses. unseen and unloved for decades. so yayay for fictional heists but booo to real ones bc wtf give that back! what if i wanted to see the concert by vermeer???????

okay so

the guiding thesis behind sugar hiccups is: how extreme can we go?

because my early days come from wattpad harry styles fics, something that i love about those fanfics was the idea that the writers were never afraid to get absurd with it. they would take the most extreme emotions and reactions a character could have and dial them up to an eleven. they would put them in insane situations and we'd all just have to go along for the ride. (and we loved the ride! it was silly and addicting and fun!)

i wanted to do that with sugar hiccups. just drama for drama's sake. how many people can cheat how many times? how many unforgivable acts are we going to forgive again and again? what's the most absurd job someone can have? what's the craziest reaction they can have? why are we just all pretending this is normal??? i want to lean into that with sugar hiccups bc i like the chaos and it makes me giggle :)))

basically summer bummer took me like 100 years because i wasn’t entirely sure about where i wanted them to go… i knew i wanted to do something with peter and him generally just being a rat LOL nd i went back and forth a bit but there was the elephant in the room of like ! oh hey there’s a major villain we can bring into play here lmao. and so she was born!

i really enjoy the part where regulus is just like in the room spiraling… bc same <3 and we have no idea what’s really going on with james and pete… we will get a taste soon… which i thought was fun

one more thing! the part where he’s watching tv:

He surfed the channels on the small box television. Two local news spots, the home renovation network, the Animal Planet. Fine , he decided, he’ll watch a family of lions rip apart a poor, defenseless antelope.

i feel like we all know james is the poor defenseless antelope??? right?????

As much as I’d love to hound you about your incriminating marriage to an old family friend dream, I unfortunately recently had a dream I was happily, ecstatically marrying Emmanuel Macron… I’m not into men, he’s FRENCH and he’s Emmanuel Macron??? okay so I haven't read wasps in winter yet, but I've seen that's its a sad ghost story. so I was just wondering if it's anything like saccharine by moonymoment (if you have read it) because even though I don't remember much about it I just remember I was sobbing. ANYWAYS it is on my fic tbr but omg life is so busy atm I can't believe it was only two years ago were I was reading fan fiction everyday!!!
