having a disability that would have been easily preventable had I just been treated properly as a child is a different type of grief.

the doctors told my parents I needed surgery. I spent my teenage years telling them i was in pain, asking for the surgery. and they refused. they refused. it wasn't even that we couldn't afford it or we lived somewhere we couldn't access the healthcare--we weren't bad for money, we lived the in the state's capital city. it would've been primarily covered by australia's public healthcare system. it wasn't a risky surgery. but they refused and i still don't know why. something that could've been easily done with and had no lasting impacts had they just gotten it treated has me now in a wheelchair. what was supposed to be one surgery is now at least four and it won't even fix all of it. i tell the surgeon what the condition is and he goes "but that's easily treatable as a child" i know. "why didn't the doctors pick up on it?" they did. "why didn't your parents get it fixed as a kid?" i don't know. i don't know. i will never know. fuck.

i haven't seen my dad in a while but when i talk about my wheelchair i wonder if he feels guilty. i try to love him but i can't help but feel like his choices stole my life from me. what could've been. what should've been. i love my disabled community and what it's given me and i try so hard to be okay with it all and most of the time i am but i miss skating. i miss hiking. i miss sailing and swimming and dance. and i could've had all of that if they'd just said yes to a single fucking basic surgery.

i think it be really funny if the reason why Shen Yuan feels he is gigachad brain in terms solving problems, being better than Shen Qingqiu, and making solutions while scoffing being like 'haha typical PIDW writing I'm so smart' isn't because he's actually trope savvy; but that because the world is based on Airplane's writing it means the world's collective intelligence cannot be smarter than its creator and intention. And PIDW is dumb on purpose in a lot of ways.

Like Shen Qingqiu sits in on Luo Binghe's meetings and offers bare bones economic theory and gets so much genuine praise and he's lording over how smart and cool he is for this.

Meanwhile Shang Qinghua has been begging the system to raise the bar since day 10. Man's taught himself so much theory and philosophy not because he's a scholar but because being in a room with people who are only as smart as you for thirty someodd years would drive a lot of people insane eventually. And you'd think having a fellow transmigrator would help but it's very obvious outside of lore man has the intelligence of shiny rock and he just can't man.

One of the more exasperating things about living a life on this planet has to be how doomed we are just to fall into the same pit one after another for infinite generations, even if you know the pit is coming up. It's a completely unavoidable event. Because you start out young and clever and there's all these well-meaning older people who will try to give you advice about the big picture things of being human

--and it's always some stupid trite bullshit. Despicable platitudes. If it was that easy, the world would be a different place, so you decide when you're old, you're going to say actual real meaningful things when you give advice and not just watery sop like this.

Then you get older and real experiences happen to you along the way, and you realise that's it. There isn't anything else to say. That's the absolute best advice we've got for saying the enormity of what you're feeling in these moments, stress-tested over a hundred thousand years of going through it. And it still sounds like sop, except you hear through that now to the truth inside.

And despite all this and how badly you want to warn them, no young people will ever be able to understand how genuinely and sincerely you mean it when you try to share this truth, and will only hear the platitudes and stupid trite bullshit. They won't really understand you, even if they want to believe you, because they can't. Not really. And you can't save them from going in the pit. They have to go in the pit. It's the only way.

You can even tell them that they will have to go in the pit before things begin to make a kind of sense, and sometimes they get a little mad at you because they already know everything and the pit sounds stupid. And it is. And they're still going to go in it. It will teach them and change them and then it will be their turn to be disbelieved by annoyed young people who they can't save from the future.
