In my eyes, Metropolis should have three different main criminal organizations: The 100 (led by Tobias Whale in Metropolis), SKULL (led by the Atomic Skull), and whatever underground activities and organizations Lex Luthor's running. Intergang is non-existent to me. They're too closely tied to the new gods and jack kirby's fourth world, a setting i find really uninteresting. So if intergang ever existed, I imagine they've crumpled like a house of cards. Or they've at least gained way less significance then Metropolis's other organised crime groups.
The DCAU focusing on intergang makes little sense to me, as it's pretty much the exact opposite of how i'd have handled things. Also making Lex Luthor the one responsible for Metallo… that's just stealing a plotline they did with Metallo and The Atomic Skull in the comics. So I don't agree with too many of their decisions. Not having Supergirl be Superman's cousin. Not having Superman be a hero back in his Smallville days. It's dumb that DC and the DCAU erased some of the best elements of the Superman mythos.

The next Justice League cartoon should have amazing, detailed figure art and animation for everyone except all Gothamites, who are drawn as low-quality chibis with their local mascot, Batblob.

I go on Twitter and I feel insane.
You can tell which MHA have never read a superhero comic book in their life or have no media literacy. Ah, yes. Midoriya, who's CLEAR inspirations for his character, is fucking BATMAN. BATMAN, who is really compassionate and one of his flaws is caring too much, Batman who still considers Harvey Dent/Two-Face to be his best friend, and who out of all people had compassion for the fucking JOKER, in The Killing Joke, one of the best Batman comics out there and MHA fans are like "Whooo! Go Midoriya on killing Tenko!" I need MHA hero stans to watch Batman: The Animated Series and read The Killing Joke and an essay that's 51 pages long as to why they are wrong. As Midoriya says, killing Shigaraki doesn't fucking solve ANYTHING. If you just kill him, then there's just gonna be another Shigaraki who was groomed into the symbol of fear. That doesn't mean he shouldn't get consequences, good Lord, but y'all are missing the point. But apparently so does Horikoshi.
Always avoid Twitter and Reddit, no matter the fandom. At least here you can a) filter out the content you don't want to see and b) expect some people to have media literacy since it's, y'know, a blog site. But I'm so glad you brought up Bruce, especially his DCAU iteration.
Any fans of Justice League and Justice League Unlimited have seen the episode Epilogue. And in it, there's actually a flashback of how the interactions between Izuku and Shigaraki should have hit.
Ace was a girl born with meta powers taken by an early incarnation of Cadmus. She could drive anyone to insanity just by looking at them. They kept her prisoner and used a collar to make her docile and weak. She was part of the Royal Flush Gang and in her second appearance, her powers were going to give her an aneurysm and kill her, which her powers could have responded to, killing everybody.
Amanda Waller sent Bruce in to use a collar that would kill her before it happened. Bruce went in, but never intended to use it on her (which she knew because of her powers). Instead of taking the easy option of killing a little girl who had been used and abused all her life, Bruce sat with her and kept her company until her death.
(I'm crying just remembering this scene btw)
That's how you write meaningful hero and villain interactions. The DCAU is especially good at doing this, from Batman: The Animated Series to Justice League Unlimited (GO WATCH IT PEOPLE).
Explicitly making it legal for heroes to kill villains was such an awful choice on Horikoshi's part. The heroes in MHA are already glorified celebrities with no sense of justice or honor. And they can't make arrests.
If they can't make arrests and it's legal for them to kill, it just pushes them towards violence and brutality instead of apprehension. The MHA system is so fucked in so many different ways and it was never addressed. MHA should have been a dystopian story, but that would have required a competent writer

I wish people would just branch out from the version of the story they were introduced to and look at other versions of it. The original version of the story and other adaptations of it. They should also accept that the version that they grew up with isn’t the definitive version of the story or characters. Some Fandoms are so annoying about the version of the story that introduced them to the story or characters that they expect every version of the story has to be just like the version they loved.
One example is how Disney stans are ignorant about the fairy tales that inspired Disney movies they loved. They also expected other versions of the fairy tales to follow the Disney storylines and details of it. I remember when they were whining about the 2014 versions of beauty and the beast because belle had blonde hair. They don’t even know that Disney didn’t invent these stories and characters. They even famous story with multiple adaptations over the years like Tarzan and Cinderella are Disney inventions. I thought Disney stans were the only ones who acted like this acted like this but then I realized that every fandom nowadays acts like this.
2003 Teen titans fans act like this and they are insufferable about every teen titan adaptation that comes out after the cartoon. They were racist as fuck to the actress playing starfire in titans because she didn’t look like the cartoon version of the character and wanted raven to get together with beast boy. Even though they were never together in the comics! They were also against cyborg being in the justice league because they wanted him to still best friends with beast boy like the cartoon.
It was the same thing with fans of the 2000s justice league cartoon. I remember when fans of the cartoon were upset when dc introduced Superman and Wonder Woman as a couple. They wanted Wonder Woman and Batman to be a couple because of the cartoon. They reacted the same way when they found out that GL and hawk girl were not a couple in comics.
These are some of the examples that I have seen over the years. It’s so annoying how people act like the version of the characters and story they were introduced to is the only version that matters. Also, expecting that every new adaptations of them have to be similar to ones that they loved and whining about it if it’s not. People need to accept that there are many versions of the story and characters.

DCAU Rewatch: On Leather Wings
Tumblr media
Reports of a monstrous bat creature causing havoc in Gotham City have put the city on edge. The mayor has tasked police detective Harvey Bullock to bring the prime suspect, the vigilante known as Batman, to justice.
Having toyed with watching Batman from the beginning on several occasions but never following through, “On Leather Wings” is probably the episode I have seen the most often. It is engaging every time.
It remains strange to me that this is the first episode produced and it starts with a sci-fi monster when so much of this series aims to be grounded. There are elements here that will reverberate throughout the rest of the DCAU through the idea of splicing – which plays a big role in Batman Beyond and Justice League Unlimited.
Otherwise, “On Leather Wings” provides an excellent sample of what the show will grow to be. It is smartly written and well animated, with heavier dramatic moments including political and crime drama. We also get an attempt to make it at least seem like Batman is doing some detective work.Though most of BTAS relies on fully self-contained episodes, there are a few arcs that can be tracked across…

carter/shayera are a god tier concept conceptually because they have so many parallels but the problem is katar & shiera have to die in order for said pairing to be god tier in the first place. but i mean, they are together now so, i just wish that book didn't get cancelled so we could've seen the proper reunion better 🤕

one of the reasons I love the MCU and DCAU/EU is that they brought in fans who can't/don't read the comics by making the plots and characters more accessible. That meant more of my friends (and just randos on the Internet) understood my references, were willing to engage in discourse, created fan work, everything.
I hope fans of comic book characters who don't or can't or won't read the comics feel just as valid as the rest of us.
hell, even comic readers don't read everything, and we all pick and choose which versions and continuities we like best. don't let anyone bully you out of this space, it's for everyone
Gosh I just remembered why I shied away from comics for so, so long.
Do you know that nerd stereotype where the nerds are like asking trivia about 'x comic' or this thing happened in canon and just gatekeeping and being self righteous jerks, specifically men? Cause I forgot, then a friend sent me the pilot episode of Elting Ville Club, which is this group of insufferable nerd who are just jerks.
And the jab is that... Some comic fans are just like that, and for so long I didn't want to be a part of it, other than mainstream content that everyone seems to enjoy and talk about, because that's what I want, talk about the things I enjoy.
But then I got into Batman characters who only (or mainly) show up in the comics, and fell in love with the content rather than what was outside and the thing is; I understand not wanting to see a character you like mischaracterizied or seeing people have a bad impression over wrong fanon takes.
But I hate it when fans act like that stereotype, we're all nerds, we all like the same characters.
Don't be an asshole to people in the fandom, that used to be an unspoken rule.

People fawn on the Bruce Timm DC animated shows, but personally I think there was still some better stuff out there. Sure, his shows gave us some good stuff (Two-Face and Martian Manhunter, for example). But also, he never used those characters very often. Two-Face was barely used. Martian Manhunter was barely used. Batman was a boring, dark jerk. Batman Beyond bored me (i didn't like the far future setting, and i just never got into it). Justice League Unlimited aggravated me because it never had the core JLA.
Really, the only parts I like are select episodes of Batman: The Animated Series (most episodes with actual supervillains are good), most of Superman: The Animated Series, and select episodes of Justice League. That's it. That's all I care about from the DCAU. I still am open to reading the comic adaptations, but like... I don't like it the same way I like Batman: The Brave and The Bold. But the DCAU is overrated, in my opinion.

Happy anniversary to one of the best and underrated Batman creation ever 🦇
20 years ago today, the television series ‘The Batman’ premiered on Kids' WB.
After the tv show ‘Batman Beyond' stopped airing in 2001, Kevin Conroy's Batman joined Superman, Wonder Woman and other DC members in the DCAU cartoon series 'Justice League', which aired from November 2001 to May 2004. On September 11, 2004, a new Batman centric animated show aired called 'The Batman', created by Michael Goguen and Duane Capizzi. 'The Batman' follows Bruce Wayne (voiced by Rino Romano) in his apparent third year of being Batman in Gotham City, juggling between fighting colorful villains such as The Joker and Penguin and being a playboy billionaire in his early 20s.
Not set within the classic DC Animated Universe created by Eric Radomski, Bruce Timm, Alan Burnett and others, 'The Batman' featured character designs by Japanese-American concept artist Jeff Matsuda. While keeping the same values the Caped Crusader, his allies and infamous rogues gallery sustained over several decades, Matsuda gave a sleek re-design that still presented a mysterious crime drama for a younger audience to appreciate. However much criticism given to the show for its “kiddish” portrayal of this favored dark mythos, radically different from Radomski and Timm's film noir take a decade prior, 'The Batman' lasted for five seasons (aired from late 2004 to March 2008), had a successful toy line, and is part of the Dark Knight animated tv history.🦇📺

I really hope this doesn’t come across as rude, but why did you decide to make Lex Luthor, whose motivation is basically racism and xenophobia from my understanding, a person of color? This isn’t like, a criticism, more just, I really like your JL remix stuff and you usually have cool reasons for the stuff you change, so I was surprised by this one
I understand the curiosity! But I have to point out that "you usually have cool reasons for the stuff you change, so I was surprised by this one" made me laugh, haha. Long answer coming because I have a lot of feelings- but the point in the very end is worth it, trust me.
Tumblr media
So for one, Lex is Afro-Greek in my version. This comes from the popular headcanon that STAS/DCAU Lex is Black (and his design is based on a Greek man). His character design, skin tone, and Clancy Brown's enigmatic performance became unintentional perceived representation for Black fans (and even DC writers). And now in the Harley Quinn show, that's become canonized! For why they like it, that's not my place to say as a non-Black person- so I listen!
Tumblr media
I don't agree that Lex's motivation is "basically racism and xenophobia"- his themes are much broader than that. It's the desire to be the Man of Tomorrow, his jealousy of Superman, the way his intellect alone is a match against Superman's strength. Sometimes that jealousy is expressed through bigotry, but it's all a means to an end for Lex. My approach is: if Lex being Black is something we want to integrate more into his character, what opportunities does that open up narratively? Because there's rich potential for him and the characters connected to him.
When discussing MAWS I talk a lot about how when you're writing a bigoted marginalized character, there needs to be specifity with where that internalized bigotry is coming from. So a change like that for Lex Luthor could, for example; discuss how privileges like wealth can assimilate otherwise marginalized people into the kind of power that harms others in their community.
The ripple affect this has on a character like Superboy/Conner is that we get to see how -even though they're both Luthors- Conner is profiled, othered and further marginalized as a Kryptonian and a Black homeless teen because he doesn't get to benefit from any of Lex's privileges. This is just part of the many reasons why I think Conner would be infinitely more interesting if he didn't look like Kal El despite being a clone. You get to see a new intersection of how the Kryptonian identity intersects with Blackness on Earth. The potential ripple effect for a character like Lena is also really fun! What if she's struggling with her own model minority pressure when she's making up for her brother's crimes? It's all very compelling!
Tumblr media
And MOST importantly, in a 3 trillion IQ Lex Luthor-style move-making Lex Luthor Black means that some version of Matt Fraction & Steve Lieber's Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen arc exists in my au. Which famously hinges on the twist that LEX LUTHOR AND JIMMY OLSEN ARE DISTANTLY RELATED. THEREFORE!!! We have now found a convoluted way to have Wacky Renaissance Artist Jimmy Olsen connected to The Manifestation Of Black Excellence Evil Edition Lex Luthor in this au.

Such a nice man! 🥰
Thinking about the Timmverse/DCAU again… My 15 year old self would be so hyped to see how much better I’ve gotten at copying the style!
(Also side rant? I was put off for years from watching Superman TAS because I’ve heard some people say it sucks—especially compared to Batman TAS and???? Were we watching the same show, friend? It’s so good! The art???? Hello??? The 2010s YouTube critic era has done a disservice to media discourse =m=)

Just saw your top fav characters, and I love them..... If you don't mind me asking, can I ask, what are your top 7 favorite media (can be books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series/etc) and your top 3 favorite ships (can be canon or non canon) from any media ? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this questions before......
Ooh, this is hard!
Favorite Media:
Amphibia (cartoon) - It's been my #1 for a while now. Great plot, characters, and development. It's one of the few series I have almost no criticisms of
DCAU (cartoon) - This is kind of cheating since the DCAU consists of multiple shows but it's my list🤷🏾‍♀️ It's just such an expensive universe and some of the best characterization DC has to offer
ATLA (cartoon) - Though I have been critical of it as of late, I still very much enjoy the show
The Promised Neverland (manga) - Me trying desperately to tell people to ignore season 2 and read the manga because it's peak fiction
Avatar (movies) - Yes, I enjoy the blue people Avatar too. We exist. I love the effects, but I also love the characters and world building
Percy Jackson & The Olympians (books) - My favorite book series of all time. Realistic characters and I love that it calls out the faults of its system unlike a certain other book series (glares at Harry Potter)
One Piece (anime) - I haven't finished it yet, but it's some of the best pieces of world building I've ever experienced
Favorite Ships:
WonderBat (Diana Prince x Bruce Wayne) - Their chemistry in both the DCAU and the DCEU is everything to me. They've always been so elegant together that I can't not like them. Even in the comics where they usually aren't romantic I just like their relationship
Brittana (Brittany Pierce x Santana Lopez) - The sapphic couple of all sapphic couples. No one does it like them
Zolu (Roronoa Zoro x Monkey D. Luffy) - This is a newer ship for me, but it's quickly become one of my favorites. Zoro's devotion to Luffy is a proclamation of love idc what anyone says
Thank you for the ask!
