Hold Tight

I was heading home one bitter November evening, after a couple of warming drinks at my usual post-work haunt on Hurst Street. When I arrived at my bus stop, situated in the shadow of the curvaceous Selfridges department store, there was only one other poor commuter stood waiting in the cold. He was visibly trembling. His painfully pale complexion jarred with raven black hair, giving him the appearance of a ghostly wraith.

I threw the lad a sympathetic smile, which he returned weakly.

“I am soooo cold,” he chattered.

“I can see that,” I acknowledged. “How long have you been here?”

“One month.”

“I meant at the bus stop,” I laughed, thinking, No wonder he’s so bloody cold if he’s been stood here for a whole month!

Turned out he had only been waiting for his bus for ten minutes, but for him that had been a chilly eternity. He was a foreign student from Pakistan and had not yet acclimatised to the British winter weather.

In truth, I was surprised he was Pakistani. I had assumed from his snow-white complexion that he was Eastern European, possibly even Romanian, as he looked like a vampire… but then, I suppose the poor soul was half frozen to death.

A bout of shivers raked his slight frame.

I impulsively threw caution to the icy wind, wrapped my arms around him, and pulled him into a hug...
