thinking about how none of the strawhats have ever known a luffy without zoro.

everyone joined the crew to witness this oddly content and peaceful, terrifying duo. their dynamic is sweet and funny, almost gentle, something you would expect from childhood friends who have been next to each other for so long they don’t always need words. and then again, they are something else when they are in battle.

they trust each other like they are extensions of themselves, they know each other inside and out like they are telepathic, they get each other so completely.

i’m sure everyone who joined the crew looked at them and must’ve thought at one point that there has never been a time where they have not known each other. until nami tells them, oh, they met a few weeks before i joined.

the shock that must come from learning their bond is nearly as young as all of theirs, and not a product of existing next to each other for years.

how baffling it must be to watch them save each other like it’s breathing, to rely on each other without question or thought in fights, and to realise they only spent such a marginal time alone before everyone else began to join them.

to never know a luffy without zoro, or a zoro without luffy, it must be hard to ever imagine a time where they weren’t by each other’s side.

She is Luffy's baby, by blood or not it doesn't matter to Luffy, He decided that he will protect her no matter what. (Zoro will also kill anyone that is trying to take her away or harm her, he's just not gonna say it out loud like Luffy)

The latest chapter hit me right in the zolu feels with that one brief interaction T-T Cuz it just goes to show — for the millionth time — how attuned Zoro is to Luffy. Noticing the change in his demeanor enough to ask him about it. We also got to see this in chapter 1130, actually. Zoro is always so focused on his captain. And so protective. This is what the first mate is for, being the voice of reason when Luffy is being a little too gullible. Ah, I love their bond! Plus, Luffy made it a point to not tell Gerd about his meeting with Loki when she asked but of course, he didn’t keep that secret from Zoro (despite what Loki said). And it looks like we’re getting a little excursion with Luffy and Zoro and Nami. Which makes perfect sense because, yes, they would absolutely lose their way without Nami. I’m really looking forward to the rest of this. I assume Zoro and Nami will be level-headed enough to see thru Loki’s bs but at the same time, his character seems to be set up for something bigger so he may get released regardless. We’ll see~

Zoro immediately clocking that it's weird for Luffy to ask about Loki and then connecting with him clearly lying before BUT a) making sure to talk to Luffy privately and then b) still acquiescing and going with Luffy to Loki because of COURSE

Zoro and Luffy sneaking out of a party to have a little private conversation with just the two of them sounds like a fanfic but it actually happened in canon 😭.

Also, the Strawhats are having a banquet, but Zoro's attention is only focused on Luffy, and he immediately notices something was off even though it's subtle. Like bro, there are a lot of people in that party yet your attention is on him like??

something about zoro being the first to ‘die’ in the sabaody incident and something about him being the last to ‘die’ in baron omatsuri.

zoro is always placed at such a monumental moment of loss for the strawhats, and i think it’s definitely on purpose. in my opinion, more than anyone else in the crew, zoro being down and not getting back up is a very sinister thing.

everyone in the crew has their role, they all create a perfectly functioning machine. zoro is the only dedicated fighter of the crew. everyone is something else as well, but he is the crew’s swordsman through and through. furthemore, the way they use zoro as a narrative tool in dire moments has always hit so hard.

zoro being the first to go in sabaody, when he could barely move after thriller bark. their defender disappeared in front of their eyes, along with luffy’s firstmate. to every member of the crew, they have never known a strawhat pirates without zoro. only luffy has known that, and i doubt luffy would even consider himself the strawhats without zoro. the horror of something that has always been there, the horror of the firstmate, the soldier, the wall they lean on, disappearing first. them falling apart at the seams makes such sick sense. the one person who has always protected them fell so quickly, and the panic afterwards could only be ensued if it was him.

and then in baron omatsuri, him being the last to ‘die.’ there was no crew to experience this loss as they were all unconscious and sinking, only luffy. luffy watched everyone he loved slowly merge into nothingness and only zoro, the person he relies on most in life or death situations could provide the freakish sense of incomprehensible hopelessness and grief to luffy as he was pinned down by arrows in his hands and feet. the feeling of being truly alone with his last hope, the man who helps and saves him like it’s life’s greatest reward, he was gone too.

the importance he has to luffy and the crew, and how they use that to emphasise their biggest losses narratively, whether they need him to instil helplessness or a feeling of finality to that loss, is so horrible and so incredibly done every time.
