ITF M25 Jakarta (Apr 10) R1: Arthur Weber [8] def. Christopher Rungkat [WC] 7-5, 1-0 ret. Match Recap
🎥 ITF Media
Christopher Rungkat tried his luck in singles again after the Davis Cup decisive victory by having a wild card in singles. Somehow, he was drawn against Arthur Weber, who went deep in Jakarta with a final and title run last year.
It was a close but physical first set, which opened with a breaking game after 4 games. Initially, A. Weber broke to 3-2 at the expense of Rungkat's errors, e.g. a backhand error to set a break point. However, Rungkat seemed to find his singles range and broke back for some reason, including a working moonball 2 shots after a drop shot, which got A. Weber run over.
Since then, everything was equal (to a level of saving their own break points faced), with the exception of the eleventh game. A. Weber went more aggressive, initiating more forehand cross-court winners to put himself 2 points ahead before finally breaking 6-5. A. Weber then successfully served for the first set 7-5.
Unfortunately, right after A. Weber broke 1-0 (thanks to his backhand winner and another preceding winner), Rungkat had to retire. Likely, could not hold up to the intensity (but also could not catch a break, noticing his retirement in Chennai in spite of his US ITFs run afterward). Come back stronger! On the other hand, A. Weber will face the winner between Duckhee Lee and Tomohiro Masabayashi, which match is still ongoing. Knowing Duckhee Lee and his comeback quest, this could be an interesting match-up.
