Kendrick, Drake, and Ethnic/Cultural Identity
One of the most discussed topics during this exchange between the two is if Drake is a culture vulture. In short, yes. He's always been. It boils down to inherited cultural identity and respected history, not the upholding of a social construct of “race.”
Race is a goofy non-biological caste system that operates in various countries and it’s a dumbass global push to get people to embrace a superior to inferior hierarchy in classifying the globe into 5 broad groups solely based on perceived skull sizes, hues of skin color, and perceived traits and phenotypic features via the teachings of François Bernier, Johann Blumenbach, Carl Linnaeus, and them other hoes. Get race tf outta here.
I’m gonna make this concise as possible, but fleshed out a bit for full understanding.
Kendrick Lamar is Black American on both sides with his roots most likely coming out of Mississippi and/or Alabama to Chicago to Cali by way of the Great Migration. (He may even descend from Duckworths from Louisiana). I haven’t done his genealogy, but now I may out of curiosity.
Black American is a double ethnicity. We’re citizens of America (nationality = US Citizen), and our ethnic group (Black) was created & descends from this land (ethnicity = American) through ethnogensis. It has nothing to do with one’s brown skin color or how the cops see us 🙃, but everything to do with the lineage of one’s parents and their parents, etc. (For info on lineage tracing, refer to my post here.)
Black Americans are an ethnic group (the largest from this land and largest in this country after Germans), while “white Americans” are a self-identification race to remove ethnic identity and conflate numbers. I can break this down further in another post if y’all want since American history is complex and will explain why Black Americans have been reclassified seven times by the US government 🙃.
Now.
Culture is largely passed down through your mother, and her mother, and her mother, and so forth for Black Americans (and I’m sure other ethnic groups). No matter if it’s a two-parent or single-parent household, she’s your ultimate teacher in setting the foundation of your cultural upbringing. It’s the same if one is raised by their grandparents. It largely stems from the grandmother. If one’s father is their main parent, that’s a different case of course.
Drake falls in line with this as someone from a single-parent household. He is half Ashkenazi of Latvian and Russian descent (ethnicity) through his mother and of half Black American descent (ethnicity) through his father. He is a dual citizen of Canada and America (nationality), who was raised in Canada with his Ashkenazi Jewish mother and Ashkenazi relatives with an Ashkenazi upbringing. He went to a Jewish day school and was engulfed in all aspects at home.
Kendrick is ethnically and culturally Black American. Drake is ethnically and culturally Ashkenazi. He is also ethnically Black American (through lineage), but not culturally Black American. Does that make Drake a culture vulture? No. He just didn’t have the cultural upbringing but could always immerse himself in learning, appreciating, and respecting the other half of his history and culture.
What makes him one is how he operates as an outsider. He participates in an aspect of Black American culture (Hip-Hop) for his monetary gain, adopts a manufactured image for his perception of believability, and disrespects the people of this culture. “…run to America to imitate culture.” It’s like a jacket to him. He takes it off to try on another (like a Jamaican accent) and swaps for another, etc.
A few examples that’s been touched on: He blackened his face to depict blackface while wearing a Jim Crow t-shirt… That’s specific disrespect towards Black Americans, mocking our history and our ancestors. “Whipped and chained you like American slaves.” That’s specific disrespect towards Black Americans, mocking our history and our ancestors. “[You] always rappin' like you 'bout to get the slaves freed.” Do I even need to explain this? Hopefully it’s understood.
The muthafucka is not like us.

It's intriguing to observe how some people exhibit a profound fear of history. This fear almost always arises because history has the power to challenge and dismantle the cultural myths they hold dear.

some of the architecture of zinder, niger. zinder rose from a small hausa village into an important center of trans-saharan trade during the 18th century, culmunating in it becoming the capital of the sultanate of damagaram in 1736.
#niger#hausa#architecture#my posts#in case you didn't know: hausa is a part of the afroasiatic language family (same family semitic langs are in)#there's a lot of theories about how exactly afroasiatic speakers spread & there isn't a consistent cultural/migration pattern#like w/ indo-euro languages#but hasua is probably to arabic/hebrew/syriac what english is to bengali or assamese (except even less similar)#i can pick out some hausa words myself ('sama' is 'heaven') but tbh im not sure how many are loadwords from arabic (since they use#'dunya' for 'world' for example). most hausa are muslim so itd make sense if they took some arabic words

Stormclan is pretty cool, I’m glad they are a direct result of the clans and not Rouge Group 255674385 that pops up like Minecraft mobs at night
Didn’t ivypool kill beetlewhisker? Will they remember it
The mental image of playing minecraft and Darktail spawns on your roof like a spider, refusing to leave in the daylight and making annoying chittering noises, is magical thank you.
Anyway nah, that was Brokenstar. Ivypool killed Antpelt, not Beetlewhisker. I have doubts they're going to remember that though, and if they do, it'll be one of those "don't worry guys we TOTALLY remember the events in our series!" throwaway lines we've been getting recently. The type that's thought in her head or thrown out in passing, but doesn't significantly contribute to Ivypool's emotional struggle.
I think Ivypool's actually the part of this SE that I'm most apprehensive about, funny enough. StormClan's got me pretty excited, but my hopes kinda started falling when I found out Dovewing was going on the road trip. I do not like the story that the Erins tell between the sisters, and I feel like they keep getting forced together to "reconcile their differences" when it would make a MUCH more effective story for the two of them to not do that.
See, what I like about Ivypool is that she's grudge-holding and spiteful. I LIKE that she tried to leverage her sisterhood with Dovewing in ASC to try and make her manipulate her husband. I find the fact she tried to sabotage SkyClan's chances at the lake back in AVoS to halt Dovewing and Tigerheart's relationship, slighting her apprentice in the process, to be COMPELLING.
I ENJOY reading about Ivypool being nasty. Both a victim of the Dark Forest who was targeted because she felt alienated, and yet, someone who has found a way to use Clan culture's most unfair aspects to her advantage. She'll NEVER see herself as the bully she actually is, because in her eyes, she's permanently the underdog.
so... I just have absolutely no desire to see Dovewing and Ivypool be "close."
Every time it happens on the page, it feels like it's Dovewing desperately wanting her sister to not treat her poorly, or believe in her, or just stop actively sabotaging her life. Then, Ivypool realizes this after a while and displays emotional intelligence that feels unfitting for her character, and apologizes.
It feels forced.
Like it's just happening because the authors know the fans want it, and not actually what these two characters would do. You get me?
I don't want to see them reconnect. I want more bittersweet examples in WC where family members have irreconcilable differences, but now and then, there's that little twinge of love, that old spark that you pray, THIS time, could become a fire... but it doesn't. There's just nothing left to burn.
TL;DR I'm feeling overall meh about Ivypool's Heart but looking forward to seeing what StormClan's all about.
#I saw a spoiler that there's apparently a moment where Dove and Ivy bond over having dead children and it made me go ughhh#i dont want to read about dead babies bringing the moms closer together#like. if anything i'd want dove to feel lowkey insulted that ivy would try to compare them#Especially with canon circumstances. Bris being an accomplished warrior who chose to end the impostor's tyranny with a mighty sacrifice#while rowan was a toddler who died of treatable illness because no one would DO anything about river's tumult.#after those times ivy tried to leverage the code and clan culture to drive a wedge between dove and tiger#like. Your daughter was an adult WAR HERO and now that it suits you you're going to try and use her death to say you understand--#what IM going through??#you have NO IDEA what im going through actually and you never did!#LIKE#LET MY GIRLS BE MESSY PLEASE. LET THEM HAVE COMPLICATED EMOTIONS#NOT ALL FAMILY RECONCILES COME ONN#bone babble#ivypool's heart spoilers

isat’s “what should we do with dead bodies” conversation is so so catastrophic to me- and a little horrifying. there’s a range of knowing how you want to die, with Mirabelle knowing the exact religious way she would prefer to be honored, Odile giving her options & preferences that mainly align with Ka Bue’s ideals, and Isabeau not having much thought beyond the general way Vaugaurde does it. They all have thought about it, and know their options well enough that they have some sort of favor or acceptance of the way their body is handled.
And then there is Siffrin, who doesn’t have this luxury at all in multiple senses. They don’t get to know their options beyond the ones from cultures that aren’t their own, the closest we get to see being “throw my ashes into the sky” which, while definitely symbolic & feels fitting for the country’s connection to the sky above, isn’t solid enough to be coined as what the Country actually does (and still, siffrin wouldn’t personally know that death is handled that way back home). He doesn’t get to die, either, and ever be mourned for. They never see how the party responds to their death in the loops, and seeing as they assumed they would just go back to traveling alone like before at the end of the journey, possibly thought they would die alone or silently, completely unaware they would be missed.
post game as well, we never learn how people from the island honor their dead? the king never says anything about it, and it’s likely siffrin will never learn. the only difference is that, now, siffrin knows they will be missed, however they’re disposed of.
#I know this is like.. surface level observation. stating the obvious and whatnot#but it also is kinda terrifying to me?#being buried is scary- but it America it’s the default method many families use for their loved ones#the very last thing someone ever does to you being out of your hands is scary!#especially in this context where it’s cultural differences.#the country doesn’t seem to Have a method for disposing of bodies.#(that we know for certain!)#and this doesn’t really stop for siffrin either#lmk if I got anything wrong or overlooked something!#I don’t have the dialouge up while writing this… teehee.#isat#in stars and time#isat spoilers#in stars and time spoilers#my thought process died a little by the end. sigh.

Four generations of The House of Windsor and The Kennedy Family.
1938 - Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy presents her daughters Rosemary and Kathleen to the Court of St James. Kathleen married the future Duke of Devonshire in 1944 and became the Marchioness of Hartington, her husband tragically died months later in World War II. In 1948 she died in a place crash while travelling with her intended future husband the 8th Earl of FitzWilliam.
1939 - King George VI and Queen Elizabeth with US Ambassador Joseph Kennedy Sr. and Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy.
1961 - Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip host US President John F. Kennedy and First Lady Jacquline Bouvier Kennedy.
1963 - Prince Philip attends the funeral of John F. Kennedy. Prince Philip is remembered as comforting the young John F. Kennedy Jr. by playing toys with him on the floor of the White House playroom.
1965 - Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip Jacqueline Kennedy and her children Caroline and John Jr. inaugurate the memorial to the late US President John F. Kennedy in Runnymede, England. Runnymede was the location of the legendary tales of King Arthur and Camelot. The legendary tales were often used to describe the JFK presidency.
2005 - Prince Charles and Maria Kennedy Shriver, niece of John F. Kennedy in the gardens of the California Governors Mansion, her now former husband Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
2022 - Prince William meets Caroline Kennedy, US Ambassador to Australia and her children Jack and Tatiana Schlossberg in Boston for Williams Earthshot Prize Award, which is inspired by JFKs Moonshot.

the thing about culture that's difficult for a lot of people it seems to me is that "culture" is not some ontologically coherent Blob where you can sit at the table and someone will serve it to you and you get to just sit there and Receive it. or, it's not something you can dig up and carefully extract unchanged, if you sit carefully enough at your books, and then put on your mantle to admire. i'm a motherfucker whose career is about digging things up from books so i get the appeal, and yet that's not what Culture is, because culture is what you Do. so you already have one. what food do you eat? where do you live? what rituals do you perform? do you take your shoes off when you go inside?
culture is distinct from religion and ethnicity (though obviously it's interrelated with both), and deeply related to the place you live now and its customs and foodways and norms for politeness and hospitality, and what other populations live around you in the place you live now. trying to connect to the mystical immigrant old-country past of your ancestors is unlikely to get you the results you're looking for - culture is something you do every day and i promise you already have one. and you're already doing it. which means that you can also just as easily change the things you do if you don't like them.
#like my family is bicultural and not biracial AND i grew up in a different part of the country than the US side of my family did.#AND there are additional complications for me specifically but like. my dad makes amazing southern food but is limited by what#is easy to get in new england. my mom is horrified by the immigrant-american versions of food she's used to. this is normal and natural.#the old-country culture has changed without the populations who left and they have their own vested interest in what that past looks like.

I've started playing Honkai Star Rail and I love how dramatically silly it lets me be. So far I have stolen mail, searched garbage cans, entered a closet to become one with the darkness, waxed on about how life is just a road to death to a terrified guy (somehow that seemed to make him less terrified), bowed in respect to a dumpster, investigated an inconspicuous lamp so many times it got mad at me, investigated a trash can so many times it insulted me, and felt bad for two different trash cans and several sandbags (I believe my Trailblazer is going insane from putting up with me). All this not counting with the countless dialogue options with NPCs around the world that allowed me to be incredibly dramatic (think almost Fischl style) for no reason (you can bet I took them). However, I cannot jump or climb, and fights are turn-based... we respect our opponents in Star Rail (and die. A lot).
What I conclude from this is that while the Traveler has a moral code (and some standards) when dealing with interpersonal interactions but isn't bound by physical restrictions or conventions (stairs? The Traveler does not understand that concept. Fair fights? Please, they don't have time for that), the Trailblazer is the exact opposite. The physical rules may hold them but their only ties to social rules or convention so far have been March and Dan Heng saying "hey, maybe don't fight the guards" and "hey, you can't just accept random jobs".
It also might be because the Traveler is a thousand year old entity that has been through A Lot (has learnt the power of friendship, but is too tired to take the long route) and is on a serious mission while the Trailblazer was quite literally Born Yesterday with the sole purpose of housing a massive problem inside their body (walks and fights like a Normal Person bc they're mimicking everyone else, but is absolutely unhinged) and is just having fun with tjeir newfound existence.
Either way I love both of them and they're basically cryptids but in different ways.
#the Traveler gives off ''i'm too old for this'' enegry but also ''If I don't fix it who will''#while the Trailblazer is the most chaotic neutral mf I've ever seen and I love them so much#hoyoverse mcs my beloved#When I started genshin I expected a soft game with silly moments and was instead met with pain#Also I love how powerful the traveler has become (I like to believe they're just recovering the power they used to have)#The Traveler holds the braincell between these two btw#I want to understand Star Rail lore better so I can write smth abt the two of them meeting in like a dream sequence kind of thing#when I started genshin I expected haha funny colorful game but was met with pain and post-apocaliptic worlds and cataclysms#when I started star rail I expected pain and apocalyptic worlds and cataclysms and was met with THE ABILITY TO BE SILLY#I CAN HIDE IN CLOSETS#fun fact: i started playing both games for the Hot Dragon Men#also: in mondstadt there's a goth hotel (the hotel is named goth but doesn't seem to have ties to goth culture)#and in star rail there is a goethe hotel that is pronouced rather similarly. both are family establishments and both are ran by an old man

Something I realized (which was obvious to me subconsciously) is that... The family that vehemently didn't accept me when I first came out but now do accept me are still the same family that I am most unwilling to be open about things I feel protective over.
I remember that my dad reacted so poorly, not to my coming out, but to my transition specifically that my therapist was the one to ask if I wanted to put it on my file that I wanted nothing to ever be shared with him about my health after I broke down multiple times due to my anxiety that I would never transition. While there are and were protections for me, I was incredibly fearful at the time because I was a minor, and I was so worried that he would have prevented my transition that I couldn't have said for certain what (if any) lengths he would have gone to to prevent that.
He's grown a lot as a person, and made some commendable strides. But he didn't find out from me when I medically transitioned the second I turned eighteen, and I think that's among the things that truly made him realize the scope of the issue.
I'm not here to guilt trip parents, guardians, or other members responsible for the care of the children or teens or young adults in their care.... but this is a cautionary tale. You aren't saving the people in your care when you do this, you simply reinforce an idea that you will never care for them, never want them as they are, would rather them be shoved away.
When you give people reasons to be secretive, they will behave secretively. When you give people reasons to doubt their safety around you, they will become sneaky, defensive, and withdrawn. When you give people reasons to doubt that you value their life, they will believe that you don't care if they live or not.
#queer#lgbt#lgbtq#ally advice#transphobia#transphobia tw#i always feel the need to preface that i have a rebuilt relationship with my dad specifically...#...but that my experiences with them have served to me in many ways to illustrate... well... what NOT to do if you are in his situation#i do still grieve that my relationship with him looks very scarred and that it took a long time to get to where he is now#but i recognize that in many ways this is a product of the world and culture we live in and that he lived in#in a world he grew up gay was used as a slur. would i expect that trans people would be treated better?#and he was responsible for how he reacted but also... it's nuanced as to why he reacted so poorly#and i want people to AVOID being like he did if they EVER want a decent relationship with the other person#i want this to be a cautionary tale and that my ending is unique. not all of us are even ABLE to repair a relationship that was THAT broken#some of us die trying. some of us never get closure. some of us are in active danger because of those reactions#and that's the more common reality i have found. most other queer people have no-contact with families who pulled the shit my dad had...#...and that's - frankly - a good idea in 99.9% of cases. i will never judge someone for the way they go about dealing with that#i'm just emphasizing that i am unique in the sense that i was able to somewhat repair that

yo, puffballs can be used to dress wounds? how does that work?
It's the simplest use in the world. I wouldn't even be able to make a whole guide on puffballs as a wound-dressing it's so simple. You literally just cut and apply to a bleeding wound.
It's a hemostatic; its spores stop the bleeding. So when it comes to puffballs, you either harvest them young and eat them, or let them mature and harvest as a medicine.
This is a puffball when it's young enough to be edible. The flesh is pure white. When the spores have started to form, this will turn yellowish and become a poison if ingested.
You can just use a slice as a gauze, or powder it. It's that simple. No processing required. It makes the blood coagulate and stops bleeding.
#Culpepper was a good guide for the writers to use to be fair#For the very basics#But once you actually start to move past the basics you realize that a lot of the treatments they use in canon would actually be-#-totally inaccessible#Because culpepper assumes you have a garden.#And he ends up totally skipping over some SUPER useful and relevant historic herbal treatments#Such as puffballs#But to be farierer I do have like... a bit of a background in pharmacognacy because of a family member being educated in this#so I kinda know what to look for and How things work#But anyway yeah#Herb Guide#Clan Culture#Puffballs#Mushrooms
