Paid a visit to the most incredible grocery store this weekend in Saratoga Springs, NY. Over 1,000 bulk bin items! I would live in this store if I could. Imagine if every grocery store had these? UNEXPECTED BULK BIN FINDS

One of my favorite things about bulk bin grocery shopping is discovering new items I’d previously bought packaged. Usually less expensive and you can BYOC (bring your own container) it’s an awesome way to reduce waste. Of course, not every bulk bin aisle is created equal, you may have a hard time finding the same speciality items between stores. But for the most part, bulk bins usually have similar conventional ingredients. 

Some of the less expected foods I’ve found in my bulk bin tours are items I wouldn’t usually look for. I’ve been excited (truly) to find staples like: - maple syrup - specialty flours - popcorn kernels - a variety of nuts + seeds - spices - olive oil - nutritional yeast - local foods like beans and legumes - DIY nut butters It’s always worth taking a look around your local grocery store to see what they have on hand in bulk before purchasing packaged! You might be surprised by what you find. The more bulk purchases we make the more the market will shift towards sustainable packaging options. Ever purchase makes a difference! Just remember to bring those reusable bags with you.

A zero waste coffee routine is pretty simple. My coffee routine consists of bulk coffee (I usually grind it up using the store coffee grinder), bulk cane sugar and half & half from Straus Family Cremery (which I buy @wholefoods). I use an insulated french press so it's a simple coffee maker and stays hot for a long time. After my coffee is consumed, I'll add the coffee grounds to my compost. Have you seen the new #ZeroWasteOmaha map (can be accessed via ZeroWasteOmaha.com). ⠀ ⠀ A few of us in the community (including @lonelysbuxlover) came up with the idea to compile a list of this sort for #omaha. Then, by a stroke of luck I came across @consciousbychloe 's #zerowaste PDX map. She generously let me copy her idea for Omaha and alas, our map was created. ⠀ ⠀ The map includes multiple layers which can be toggled for a simpler view. In addition to locations where you can buy essentials package-free, the map also includes repair/servicing spots, coffee shops that offer a discount if you #ditchthepapercup and #bringyourownmug, and thrift stores to find #newtoyou items. ⠀ ⠀ Take a look and let me know any feedback.
