I’ve returned :)

Surprise surprise, I will now be returning from my hiatus! I stopped posting to this account around six months ago. I started this account as a part my of IB Personal Project, which required me to choose a topic I was passionate about and figure out how to do a long term project on it. Going waste free, and starting this blog, was what I chose to do. But sadly, I had to abandon this blog in the spring so that it could be externally moderated by the IB. 

When I left this account, I had around 30 followers. I was very happy with this number, not to mention proud. 30 whole individuals wanted to follow me for something I worked hard to create. When I logged back into this account, I was surprised to find that my follower count had risen to 600. I just want to say thank you.

Buhbye torn pantyhose.

Zero wasting has gotten me looking through my trash bin piece by piece to figure out what I can repurpose and recycle.  On today’s chopping block: pantyhose.

Two things I seem to have in abundance: pantyhose with sad little runs in them and furry cat children (maybe there’s a connection there somewhere).

So why not make some free cat toys, me thinks!

Step 1: Cut approximately an 8″ section from the bottom of one pantyhose leg.  This section can include the foot of the pantyhose or not.

Step 2: Next, cut this section into smaller sections.  I cut approximately a 4″ section of leg for the actual body of the cat toy.  Then, I cut a few smaller strips which will be the stuffing.

Step 3:  Stuff the smaller stuffing strips inside the larger section of the pantyhose.  If you’re using the foot section of the pantyhose, you’re good.  If you’re using a middle section of the leg, knot one end so the pouch is only open on one side.

Step 4: Add about a teaspoon of your favorite organic catnip.

Step 5: Knot the open end of the toy.  For a cleaner look, I then folded the extra end of pantyhose back over the toy and knotted on the opposite side.  This has the effect of getting rid of extra pantyhose on the tail end, and also double bagging the catnip center to reduce the chance of spillage.  AND you’re done!

(If you’re handy with the sewing machine, you could for sure make a prettier pouch.  This, however, is the easy-peasy, no sew edition.)

The fur children accepted their catnip sacrifice with glee.  Above, one may witness Merlin the kitten decimating his new favorite toy with his tiny kitten teeth. 

I was able to make 3 cat toys out of one pair of pantyhose and still have the top section of the pantyhose to use for future DIY.  I hear they make great screens for seed sprouting containers or can be shredded into strips to make garden ties for droopy tomatoes and the like.  Happy zero-wasting!

** BONUS  ** Cut several smaller circles out of a leg of the pantyhose and you have some easy DIY pony tail holders that are super gentle with your hair.  These are particularly great if you have a mass of thick hair like me, since I find that a lot of the store bought bands aren’t quite large enough to wear comfortably. You can make SO MANY hairbands out of a single pair of pantyhose, you’ll be set for a year.

I have a theory 💭 It’s been a minute since I felt that same spark of excitement or inspiration on Instagram, and I’m getting the impression I’m not the only one on here thinking about it 🥵 So here’s my theory: with more folks getting vaccinated that means more people getting outside 🏞 seeing friends 👯‍♀️ and making connections irl.
