When I think about all the things the IE team has cultivated in the last year and a half, I’m *truly* astounded. I’ve returned :)

Surprise surprise, I will now be returning from my hiatus! I stopped posting to this account around six months ago. I started this account as a part my of IB Personal Project, which required me to choose a topic I was passionate about and figure out how to do a long term project on it. Going waste free, and starting this blog, was what I chose to do. But sadly, I had to abandon this blog in the spring so that it could be externally moderated by the IB. 

When I left this account, I had around 30 followers. I was very happy with this number, not to mention proud. 30 whole individuals wanted to follow me for something I worked hard to create. When I logged back into this account, I was surprised to find that my follower count had risen to 600. I just want to say thank you.

I have a theory 💭 It’s been a minute since I felt that same spark of excitement or inspiration on Instagram, and I’m getting the impression I’m not the only one on here thinking about it 🥵 So here’s my theory: with more folks getting vaccinated that means more people getting outside 🏞 seeing friends 👯‍♀️ and making connections irl. After more than a year of being glued to our phones in quarantine, here’s that reminder that we don’t exist solely to be online. When buying groceries...

I love KitKats. They are my guilty pleasure. But after becoming waste free, I was disappointed to see how much waste comes with them. 

Each bar (with four pieces per unit) of the standard sized KitKat comes wrapped in plastic. In Germany, they don’t really sell them by the bar. Instead, they sell them in packs of five. Each bar is individually wrapped din plastic, and then all five are in a plastic package. The waste produced by this is crazy! It’s really sad to realize that one of my favorite foods is so... wasteful.

This doesn’t only apply to KitKats. The shelves of our grocery stores are lined with products wrapped in layer upon layer of plastic. As people do not reuse candy bar / food wrappers, it’s disheartening to realize that all the packaging will end up in a landfill. 

For those of you who aren’t waste free already, I’d like to challenge you: next time you are at a grocery store, try and buy NOTHING that comes wrapped in plastic!
