#swapitsaturday  - Bulk Teas
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again (and probably like 100 more times, so you’ve been warned): zero wasting doesn’t happen overnight.  Zero wasting doesn’t mean throwing out all the plastic in your home to get chic stainless steel replacements.  It doesn’t mean immediately running out to get the latest in zero waste fashion and trashing your perfectly fine wardrobe in one fell swoop so your clothes scream “ZERO WASTE!!!” as you strut down the sidewalk. Zero waste means taking care of what you’ve got, using up what you have and buying smarter in the future.  I am not zero waste... yet.  But I’m getting there.  A major milestone came a few weeks ago when we swapped out our tall trash can for a small, bathroom-sized can because we are producing MUCH less trash than we were a year ago.
I attribute the progress we’ve been making towards zero waste to the fact that we have been taking baby steps instead of overwhelming ourselves by trying to do it all at once.  But part of the “baby steps” we’ve been taking has meant keeping an eye on the trash we have been producing and figuring out ways to eliminate that waste. Lately, one of the most prominent elements of actual trash in our waste bin has been foil-lined tea bag wrappers, which are unfortunately non-biodegradable and non-recyclable.  I love me my herbal teas, but I bought packages of these tea bags awhile ago and decided to use up what I had (despite the wasteful packaging) as it was better than just trashing the whole lot.  (NOTE:  Some companies actually infuse plastic into their tea bags which is yet another source of non-biodegradable waste to be aware of and a compelling reason to switch to bulk teas for both environmental and health reasons). Well I finally finished off my wastefully packaged tea bags and I’m free to buy bulk tea to my zero wasting heart’s content and I’m so pleased!  I went to our health food store earlier this week and stocked up on some of my favorites: loose leaf green tea (coffee tends to be a bit too much for me, but I buy it in bulk for DH), lemon balm and cardamon pods to mix with dandelion leaf tea for a spicy (and healthy!) treat.  Our local store didn’t have my other must-have, holy basil, so I ordered it in bulk online, which was also cheaper than buying the individually packaged teabags and MUCH less wasteful (though the bulk packaging leaves something to be desired).
Tumblr media
I store my teas in little canning jars and use a stainless steel tea infuser and, let me just tell you, my tea cupboard looks hecka pretty now that all that silly packaging is gone.  Win-win!
Tumblr media
Two weeks worth of bulk organic green tea for half the price of packaged tea!
So we’re not zero waste yet, but this simple swap has eliminated a significant source of the remaining non-biodegradable trash we’ve been producing (tea bag wrappers, tea bag staples and coffee bags).  Our only tea and coffee waste now (loose leaf tea and coffee grounds) are entirely compostable.  Yay!

How to Feed a Big Family on a Budget
Saving money takes an enormous amount of forethought, but it's not impossible. During holiday times, a lot of families begin to tighten their spending so they don’t experience any financial hardships. These kinds of things can cause a lot of stress for people who are trying to raise their family in peace, but it doesn’t take that much to shave some cash off your food bills. The following article will give you a few tips on how to feed a big family on a budget.
Make a Plan
The first step towards achieving your money saving goals would be to have a plan. Planning your meals allows you to be able to calculate the costs of everything. Once you know how much it costs, you decided which ingredients are essential, and those that can be left out. Now that you have a plan, you can also do your shopping accordingly. It might also be a good time to find out when you’re going to use that blank can of meat.
Buy in Bulk When Possible
When you buy in bulk, there’s usually a reduced price for the items. If the item is perishable, but also easily frozen without ruining it, then you can divide the food up so that it can be cooked more easily, and according to portions so you only make what you need.
Get It All in One Trip
One of the things that a lot of people forget about shopping is that there is a total cost of shopping that comes as a direct result of what it takes to get there. If you make sure to get all of the things you need in one trip, then you’ll spend less money on gas.
Buy Food to Go with Ingredients You Already Have
Basically everyone has things around their house that they simply refuse to eat. Instead of letting it continue to sit there, try getting some ingredients that you can put with it so it can become a meal The less food you waste, the more money you will have.
Put Away Your Plastic
When you use cash to pay for food, it’s a lot easier to keep track of how much money is actually going out. The convenience of being able to go to the store can make you feel less attachment to the money you make. Getting cash cuts spending back a bit.

I’ve been working really hard at wasting less. Ive been bringing old glass pasta jars to the @portlandfoodcoop to fill up with rice, peanut butter, nuts, coffee, and other things that generally come in packages that will ultimately end up at the dump. I’ve also been working on using fabric scraps to sew up some bags that I’ve been testing out as produce bags to put vegetables and fruit in instead of the plastic ones you rip off. . . I’m gluten free so there are a few things like bread and bagels I haven’t been able to find fresh and not wrapped in a plastic bag (if you have any recommendations please dm me!) but I save the bags they come in and use them instead of getting new ziploc bags. . . If you have any more tips for a zero-waste life, leave a comment! . . I’m trying to put this into action in every aspect of my life including my business! I’m working on zero waste patterns and using each scrap fabric I create in a useful way on top of, as always, using only natural fibers that can and will biodegrade into the earth after they have served you and your grandchildren well. . . . It’s not about a few people doing zero waste perfectly, it’s about everyone trying to do it meaningfully. . . . . . . #repurposedclothing #sustainablefashion #zerowaste #zerowasteliving #trashfree #compost #bulkfoods https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv7BRXEHHhg/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=10vfj8zaslr74
