I’m really loving your Stevepop roadtrip stuff! Do you have any h/cs about it you’d be down to share?

i've got a rant. if you will.

soda has just returned from vietnam. even if soda has never once wanted to leave tulsa, the war itches and he needs to get out. steve is always willing to follow, has always hated the city, is worried soda's slipping away. lately, neither of them have been able to stomach time apart. the first time soda saw the ocean was getting shipped out after basic training, and steve's never seen it at all; they set their sights on san francisco. they blast the radio through oklahoma. soda gets them lost outside of amarillo. steve stops to take photos of buckshot rounds punched through no tresspassing signs, post offices, soda leaned up against the car, soda sleeping in the passenger seat, soda driving barefoot, soda shaving in the rearview mirror. they smoke weed with kids chasing the grateful dead, share cigarettes with long haul truckers. they swim in the colorado river, in havasu lake. soda makes idle conversation with waitresses and motel clerks and toll booth workers; everyone has a story. they sleep in the bed of the truck and both wake up at three with their legs tangled together to coyotes yipping. the two of them fight in bakersfield and outside of san francisco soda gets out of the car to walk along the side of the road while steve sits in traffic.
