I SCRUBBED THE BATHTUB.
I know it doesn't look very impressive but you didn't see it before. The remaining "stains" are actually where the enamel has worn away, though at least it doesn't seem to have spread since I moved in.
I do clean it, but not as often as I should -- I get very nervous because the cats LOVE the tub. The first time I scrubbed it after I got them, Polk came leaping into the tub and landed right in a puddle of cleaner. I had to grab four pounds of Cat Who Does Not Like Being Held and hold her under the tap until I was sure she was clean, traumatic for us both. Now I close the door when cleaning but that means I have to clean fast because their litterbox is in there and the only time they couldn't access it when they needed to go, they pooped in the bed.
Anyway, I went over the tub with CLR, then rinsed and went over it with bleach, then rinsed and hit a few problem spots with the steam cleaner. I'll do the actual tiles some other day. I got up about 90% of the hair dye, all of the soap scum, and later today I'll wax the taps. I was considering waxing the whole tub but it sees so much water and soap I'm not sure it'd be worth the elbow grease.
Listened to the latest episode of Criminal, "Extraordinary and Compelling Reasons", which is about the difficulties that profoundly sick prison inmates in America have in getting treatment and compassionate release. Difficult listening but also I think very important for anyone interested in prison reform or abolition. I used to be a big true crime buff when it came to podcasts but I've slowly been whittling them away; I think there are arguments to be made in favor of discussing crime and the criminal justice system, but sooner or later most of them either stop doing their research or get so scared to air an opinion and lose advertisers/patreons that they start just reading from Wikipedia. Criminal is one of the few I've kept around in part because it's a wholly different and much more journalistic approach than most. Also Phoebe Judge could read the Begats and I'd listen raptly.

hey it's me black mold. thanks for running your window air conditioner all summer. whatever you do, do not regularly clean the removable filter. that's not necessary
you should also never ever unplug the air conditioner and stick a flashlight in the vent that blows air to see if we're in there. it's very bad, that place should not be checked
and whatever you do, if you've already made the mistake of unplugging it, don't remove it from the window for cleaning if possible. and whether it's possible to remove the unit or not, don't carefully disassemble the front panel, document where the screws go and plastic bits go, and open up the vent more to be able to get into it easily
as black mold, i'm an expert on this. you should heed my warnings: now, if you've somehow made the mistake of doing all of the above, you should not use warm water and dish soap to CLEAN the inside of the vent thoroughly. DON'T ever use a bottle brush to get into the hard to reach places. and certainly don't rinse and dry the cleaned area before carefully putting it back together
there's nothing wrong with us, black mold. we don't cause or exacerbate breathing conditions like asthma or other illnesses. it's cool, we're cool
furthermore, if you're capable of removing the window unit, DONT take a hose with the same soapy water and wash the portion of the window unit that sits outside the window and is therefore weatherproofed.
whatever you do, don't allow the air conditioner to dry before plugging it back in and turning it on again
and if you have a central air conditioner, you will definitely never ever consult a manual or sources online to perform a similar cleaning procedure on the cooling unit outside.
lastly, if you're physically unable to do the things we (the black mold) warned you not to do above, you should never ever ask someone to help you or hire a service to do it.

*takes your face gently in my hands and looks sincerely into your eyes* listen. your home does not need to look like a showroom. homes are meant to be lived in, and that means a certain amount of mess. it's okay if there is clutter on your desk or if you don't remember the last time you cleaned your oven. mess is morally neutral. but at the same time, you deserve to live in an environment that is safe and comfortable, and that means someone has to clean sometimes. things like mold, spoiled food, and dirty litter boxes are genuine health hazards and need to be dealt with before they make someone sick. think of cleaning less as "my home needs to be completely spotless" and more as "I am an animal and I need a habitat that is free of hazardous material." it's okay. *kisses you on the forehead and tucks you into a blanket*
(and of course it is always acceptable and even good for you to ask someone else to help you with cleaning if it's physically or mentally difficult for you. even if you're paying them to do it.)

National Clean Your Home Month, aka NaClYoHo or "Salty Pirates" month, is soon to be upon us!
Each November, I "host" NaClYoHo, where participants work to make their living spaces more comfortable and pleasant. The full manifesto is at the link, but the basic premise is that each day in November you put on a podcast, tv show, playlist, or other media, and clean or organize some aspect of your home.
It's meant to be a low-stress way to both do a yearly cleaning and also participate in an intensive project like National Novel Writing Month without having to write a novel. I'll be posting about it again before November kicks off, but I thought I'd link to the manifesto well ahead of time, so people could brace themselves. :D
This year my big goals are to figure out how to keep my floors truly clean, replace at least one rug, and clear out the storage nook where I have a bunch of stuff that needs sorting through. I am also going to try to dedicate some time to researching those "bathroom refresh" companies that basically just put a shell over your existing shower/tub/walls and see if it's feasible for my bathroom, which desperately needs it.

whoever needs to hear this: if you got a disability, if you don’t know if you have something, if you ever think “it’s not that bad” if you have a thing about guilt, if you’re ill, Anything: listen. it is okay to throw things away.
you can throw it away. if it sucks and it stresses you the fuck out, if you just “need the right time to fix it” for the past 3 months. or years. if you loved it once upon a time but it makes you feel kinda weird and guilty now. if it’s a jacket youve reaaaally been meaning to mend and then donate. a jar of sauce that “all you have to do” is clean out to recycle but it’s been a week and now there’s a small colony growing in it. slowly shredding to bits fabric scraps you plan to use to fix something. busted picture frame. cracked mug. old shoes. extra box. an entire pack of granola bars that you hate so much but don’t want to waste.
life is already so goddamn difficult for us. i know you still care about recycling and the environment and sustainability. but it’s okay, i promise. sometimes you have to take care of your space. sometimes you have to cut your losses so you can actually have energy to recycle the next thing. get rid of the old shirt before it turns into a tornado pile of guilt under the bed. you’re not a bad person. you can throw this one away.
