Humans are Space Orcs, “Grief.”

I found this in the archives of my personal journals. It was originally written for an audience, but somehow, I didn’t think it was appropriate for the eyes of others. Now don’t be salacious, I don’t mean it was inappropriate in that way. I mean, at the time there was something about it that just felt too sacred to deface by showing it to the public eye. I am giving this to you now, reader, because I think it is important that, if you are going to join the ship and become involved with humans, you need to understand what you are in for, and there is soemthing about this experience that explains something fundamental I simply cannot quantify.

i mean. medical technology is all about stopping "natural" things from happening to our bodies. from external diseases to internal parts of our bodies not working the way we need them to (our brains, our organs, our immune systems), medicine is all about interfering with things that have naturally gone wrong in our bodies--and that for the first time in history, we might have a way to fix. and that's not even getting into cosmetic stuff--the billion dollar industries to remove acne and body hair for instance. natural things that happen to our bodies, that we have decided are unpleasant and that we have the right to change. and that's fine, because these are our bodies, and we have a right to change them, natural or not.
so stop pretending that depriving trans kids of puberty blockers and other medical care is okay, because growing irreversible secondary sex characteristics that they do not want is "natural"

Alfred is better at figure skating while Matthew is better at ice hockey. (The sports being developed in their respective countries)
Alfred loves the ice rink, he loves the jumps, the flips, the spins. He revels in his freedom on ice. If he’s not flying, he’s skating. Jumps were the closest he could get to flying without a plane and he loves it.
Matthew loves the ice, he love the skating, the handling of the puck. Matthew can let himself be confident, brutal and he can just let go. Matthew is quite dangerous to play against because he is cunning and his plans can wreck an unsuspecting person. Many nations swore off of playing with him because he is so aggressive and competitive.
The boys have been on ice since they could walk, their mother taught them how to stand on the ice. They used to go skating when they were Kanata and Kariwase, they would strap bone skates to their shoes and skate on the ice, hunting for food or just having fun.
when the sport began to grow popular during the 19th century they were overjoyed. Though they were not on speaking terms, they did enjoy skating near each other, without using their words.
Alfred first began doing jumps in the 1920s, trying to do more and more daring jumps everytime he went out

before you see something and recoil at the price, be it handmade items, services, art, whatever. when you see something and you think, "i wouldnt pay more than $15 for that," you seriously have to ask yourself: if i were offered that same $15, would i make this object? would i spend the time to teach myself this skill to get this done, for $15? would i do this service for that same $15? would that be worth my time and effort?
yeah, that handmade necklace is $140. you might only be willing to pay $40 for that same necklace, but would you make it for $40 if someone asked you to?
you want to pay the babysitter fifteen bucks for the three hours she's watching your child. but would you honestly do that for $15? would you go into a stranger's house and change their baby's diaper and care for its needs, for $15?
you think its ridiculous that this artist is charging $30 for an icon commission. would you spend years catching up to their skill level to make that same drawing, start using your skill to make some extra cash, and then spend three hours on a drawing just to get $15?
would you be willing to work for $5 an hour?
no?
then don't be angry when someone else won't.
you don't have buy the service, it's okay if some things aren't within your budget or comfort zone, and it's also okay if the product isn't worth that much money to you. but do not be angry. be glad, because you know of another person out there who isn't being exploited for their time.

Uurrrggghhhhh good morning I was thinking about Alfred and Matthew's first words as children and - the more time I spend with babies irl, the more I'm convinced that first words aren't really a thing, because it's really, really hard to distinguish baby babbling from intentional words. that being said, Matthew's first intentional words were "uh-oh!" presumably in imitation of Francis. Alfred's one of those babies who doesn't really have real first words, but he did do a lot of baby sign language and his first sign and approximate word was "ma!!!" not 'ma!' as in mama, but as in 'more!' I'm not sure if baby sign language is anachronistic but tbh I don't care.

it just. it would be so easy to replace hunting-exotic-wildlife tourism with photographing-exotic-wildlife tourism. it's the perfect solution. rich tourists would still get to spend their money going to the same countries and feeling cool about demonstrating a "skill" by using expensive rented equipment to "shoot" rare animals, under guidance by local experts. they would even still end up with a souvenir to hang on their wall as a trophy (professional-grade photography they shot themselves). it's the perfect solution

I love the Brood AU. It has its heart wrenching moments as well at its super sweet moments. Since the holidays are upon us once again, how do you think the kids handled they’re first holiday season at the Kent’s and without Bruce? I know canonically Bruce is Jewish, so how do you think the Kent’s approached the Jewish Holidays? I don’t mean for you to write angst, but my mom had a minor stroke in August and she’s doing better now, but the holidays don’t really feel the same (we basically skipped thanksgiving and Christmas feels more like a chore right now than something exciting) and I’m thinking for the kids in this AU they’re probably feeling that same bland weariness. On a lighter note, in comparison, what is that first holiday season with Bruce back like?
Oh honey, I feel you. Between my worsening mental health and dealing with my mum’s cancer scare, my holiday feelings are all screwed up. I hope things get better for you! 💜
Their first holiday season without Bruce is rough. I don’t think I ever said the exact when of Bruce dropping the kids with Clark, but I think the holidays is when Dick finally can’t be the strong eldest anymore and has his breakdown about Bruce never coming home.
Clark also struggles because he wants to make the holidays perfect for these kids but he doesn’t know what to do or how and he’s grieving himself. Ma, Pa and Lois really come to the rescue that year, and Clark has a vivid memory sitting in a quiet living room, lit only by a tree, surrounded by sleeping kiddos and family. It’s a bittersweet memory.
And they celebrate whatever in the Clark-Bat household. Kids learn about a new holiday at school? Cool, let’s do it. Whatever. They use the holidays as ‘together’ time, not necessarily religious time. Ma, Pa, Lois, Alfred and Leaguers all come through the farm this time of year, that’s why the kids all love it.
When Bruce comes BACK Clark’s house is DECKED in mistletoe by the elder kids, because they’re annoying as hell. Dick and Jason just worry about showing up, while Cass, Tim and Damian stress about getting Bruce the perfect gifts. Jon pouts a lot of the time because he doesn’t know how to feel, he didn’t invite Bruce to their festivities. Kon just tries to keep the peace between everyone and everything.
But it ends in a similar way as Clark’s bittersweet night under the tree. Only now, Bruce sits next to him, Damian and Jon cocooned between them fast asleep, big kids on the floor, and everything seems right in the world for once.

3. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?
I would say my Dick!POV fics since I rarely write from his perspective. mercy street and lonely town stick out to me.
that or, as I keep saying (sorry!!!), bloodletting. I’m really proud of how much work I’ve put into that fic.

What are your thoughts on Battison!Bruce and GrumpyCavil!Clark? Like I need you to feed me your thoughts bestie pls and thank
OOOF okay bestie, this is gonna be really obscure because I've been watching a ton of cooking shows, but I raise you: Hell's Kitchen AU
Alfred is a certified Chef with experience under his belt and a zero tolerance policy for bullshit. " WHAT ARE YOU?!"
Harley, between two pieces of muffin: an imbecile muffin--
And EVERYONE knows that Bruce, the clumsiest, messiest, worstest cook there, is present ENTIRELY because Alfred likes him and his endearing antics too much to boot him home
Bruce after squeezing pickle juice in his lemon tarts because he doesn't know the difference in color: is this okay :( I know it's not the best :(
Alfred, physically holding back the filthiest curses: Congratulations you're the winner of this week's challenge-
The Valentine's day theme eventually comes, and everyone expects cutie Bruce to be married to some nerdy, dorky, soft spoken person; Imagine their surprise when a 6'5 shithouse stomps his way into the building, going straight to dip Bruce In a kiss
Bruce in confessionals: My husband is the cuddliest teddy bear I know
Clark, breaking a blender with his bare hands and staring Ivy right in the eye:
Bruce: we're here to have fun :>
Clark, in HIS confessional: I hope they told their mothers 'I love you' because this is the slaughterhouse, and I'm the knife

I saw a post about y'all vs. you guys and I have two ideas:
1. What if Clark says "y'all" and Superman says "you guys"?
2. I kinda need a fic now with all the misunderstandings around "yea, no" and "no, yeah".
Okay okay okay you must be on the same wavelength as me because ever since those posts started going around I have been thinking about this exact topic.
First - I personally think that Clark would say y’all but Superman would actually be a bit more formal most of the time. Some examples below:
~*~
Clark: Ya’ll okay?
Superman: Is everyone okay?
~*~
Clark: ya’ll’l never get away with this!
Superman: You will never get away with this!
~*~
Clark: I’ve got you! Ya’ll are gonna be okay.
Superman: I’ve got you! You guys are going to be okay.
Etc etc. I imagine he would say “you guys” to the right audience, but overall I personally headcannon that when he’s Superman he actively tries to hide some of his affectations that might give away where he’s from. Both as a way to protect those he loves and not bias other people against him or let him think that he could be from anywhere so he’s accepted everywhere, ya know?
Someone either on tumblr or in a fic I read once (if you know where please mention it so I can properly source!) mentioned Superman accidentally slipping that he was from Kansas while rescuing someone as a way to connect with them. Buuuuuut then realized how stupid that was and started telling everyone he rescued he was from where they were to cover his tracks. And that has always stuck with me as exactly the type of thing he’d do. Head empty - no thoughts - connect with others and save everyone he can and think nothing of his own security (or even sometimes how his own actions can effect the security of those he loves - at least when he’s young and just starting out)
BUT - this leads me to a second point on topic #1 (and into #2) Which is the beautiful, hilarious possibility of code switching between Clark and Superman ways of speaking in different situations.
Just imagine Superman in the watchtower. He just got done kicking some villain’s ass. He’s simply covered in some sort of alien goo and a light powdering debris from his fight and desperately needs a shower. Several of the other members are sitting around playing cards/shooting the shit when he walks in.
“Oh man Superman you look rough my dude.”
And because it’s been a hard fight and he’s also thinking about his personal problems he snaps back without watching his vocabulary. “If y’all’d’ve helped a little more maybe I wouldn’t be so—” He gestures to the suit and its immediate need for cleaning.
And wouldn’t that just stop them in their tracks a little. Big blue just said…y’all? Not only y’all but a strange rushed conjunction that feels out of place for him (they think). But then. THEN. He keeps doing it. Little bits and pieces slipping out to his fellow superheroes and friends.
“I’m fixin to go to China for a ribbon cutting ceremony. All y’all want takeout?”
“No. Yeah. I’ll be there. You coming with?”
“Mom really made the best pies for the state fair this year. Y’all’d’ve loved it if y’all’d’ve come.”
"Oh for cryin' out loud. Batman isn’t that scary. Just talk to the man, he’ll understand.”
Whiiiich brings me all the way back around to your point number two. God I would LOVE a fic full of misunderstandings. And one around “no, yeah” and “yeah, no” would be so much fun! I don’t know if I’m the person to write it because I literally say those two things in my head with such different inflections that I can’t confuse them. But it would be ~g l o r i o u s~ if it happened! I’ve been trying to wrack my brain for a good scenario in which they could be confused.
Maybe one where Bruce finally gets the courage to ask Clark around for dinner. “Are you free for dinner this Sunday at 5?” “No, yeah.” And Bruce just walks away unsure of if Clark understood or not? I know I personally have a habit of adding more to my sentences that sort of clarify “no, yeah” via context. Like, “No, yeah. I’ll be there.”
But “yeah, no” ? Now that one is easily said alone. But I personally always say it with a bit of distaste on the no, or laced sarcasm. Or as a question. So here’s some scenarios for anyone who needs examples of this
Person 1: You going to that party?
Person 2: Yeah, no. (No said with a hint of ‘I’d rather get teeth pulled without Novocain’)
Person 1: Did you get a raise this year?
Person 2: Yeah, no (No said with anger)
Person 1: Did you remember to do [insert chore/obligation that is ridiculous]?
Person 2: Yeah, no (No said as in ‘I am not going to do that. I never planned on foing that. I’m laughing on the No because it’s such a stupid ask)
Person 1: Did you do the dishes?
Person 2: Yeah, no? (Sort of. This means sort of, kind of, in a roundabout way, but probably not the way the question asker intended)
