I think the best thing about masochist Lighter is the fact that it's, in a way, incredibly selfish. He won't do things to you, ever, it goes against his moral code. I could point to the obvious thing, the chocrobos and sweets in general. Sugar is addictive in real life but like which all such substances some are more vulnerable to them than others. And Killua seems to have developed a chocolate habit.

But I think his tendency towards gambling is far more telling.

Killua loves rivalry, he loves competitions and he will try to gamify stuff he does with Gon. But at least in their competitions with each other Gon can work as a safety valve because he's also obsessive and self destructive and Killua's care for Gon would curb his risk addiction. That and the fact that with Gon they get into really life threatening situations and the self-preservation Killua's family forced into him, kicks in too.

But when the stakes are not life threatening, when it's money... Killua can't handle money. He loses all of their Heaven's Arena winnings on internet auctions. Then Bisky has to drag him away from the slot machines in Greed Island.

When there's no threat to his or Gon's safety, Killua has absolutely no breaks and because Gon leans on him for the planning and for knowledge about the world, considering Gon's much more sheltered childhood, Killua's on his own to control himself and he absolutely can't.

Maybe needing to provide for Alluka will also work as a decent safety valve for the gambling. Maybe he will be more careful with the money he needs for her.

But I don't think he sees that he has this problem. He's always been rich and capable to make quick and easy money. He's also capable of roughing it for a while, and Gon was too. Regarding your cool anaysis of dick vs bruce as batman in their relationship to robin, even if morrisons dick can be argued to be wildly ooc(and aren't they all, at the end of the day, including our own) i definitely think you did a good job at pointing the follow up behaviours they've developed. Also also, dick won't be overprotective or pushy with robin when the responsibility of batman rests on his shoulders, not only because he is busy and trusts damian to handle himself(which, if it wasnt a comic we'd all cry child neglect, but come on, it is, that's basically half the fun) but also because he /was/ robin. He led a team of teenagers when he himself was barely one, for him, robin is a hero, not a sidekick. If damian says he's fine and dick looks at him and he looks fine, well, who is he to tell the hero that he's wrong? He'll be a shoulder to lean on but he won't impose his own convinctions upon a colleague unless they're in active danger/a threat.

They doo take care of the active threat and deal with the consequences. At the end of the day, bruce is a parent who became a vigilante well into his adulthood, no matter how much he says robin is a parter, that's still his kid after the dust settles on the criminal. Dick is a child soldier surrounded by a community of violence and years of carefully built camaderie, he will look robin in the eye over ice cream and tell him to try not to get paralyzed next time, 'that's what i did when i was your age' style. We smile about dick being more emotionally adjusted than the rest, but in any other team, he's still 'the bat' for a reason.

I am very curious to hear your opinion about why dick doesn't necessarily trust damian not to kill enemies, especially since bruce does trust him enough in that regard. Is it dick knowing damian better, is it him not being that attached yet to his new brother, is it bruce being blind and trusting, is it experience with uncontrollable teammates shaping both of their perspectives? It's funny to joke about 'i'm more worried about his kidnappers' but that sure says something about how he still doesn't see damian as a controlled asset, the way he would've seen tim as his robin or even jason past his first year back.

However, I really wouldn’t call Dick a child soldier, both in terms of well if we’re saying it’s fun and fine that Dick was not very concerned about Damian due to genre conventions it’s important to be consistent, and because Batfam has an actual child soldier in David Zavimbe. Dick going on patrol after school and basketball isn’t the same as being kidnapped as a kid and forced to kill people and treated as a dispensable tool. It's not even the same as Cass's childhood where she was trained and raised as a weapon (just in a very comic-book-y, no parallels to the real world way). Dick pretty much had a normal childhood outside of vigilanting, so for the conventions of the genre he is not a child soldier.

I also wouldn’t say that on any other team he’s still ‘the bat’. I guess he’s the bat in that the writers are more likely to play up his problem solving skills and angst, but I mean like :P in terms of both training -- Donna was trained by the Amazons since she got rescued, Kory trained by warlords of Okaara, Joey trained by his mom (who also trained Deathstroke), can go on – and in terms of traumatic/unusual childhoods -- Garth was a feral child who was abandoned to die of exposure per Atlantean tradition and found by Arthur at like what eight? Ten? Kory was trained to fight knowing she would fight in the war to try to protect her people from being conquered and enslaved and then she herself was traded in as a royal hostage to be a slave for 6 years – Dick does not really stand out that much. He is truly just some guy in the superhero world – a very competent guy, but that is required for being a superhero.

With regards to Dick not trusting Damian, I don’t think it’s due to him knowing Damian better – Damian really doesn’t try to kill many people, it’s not like Dick has to constantly interfere. it's more of Dick's assumptions about Damian that he acts on (The only person I can think of Damian trying to kill in general patrol/anti crime stuff is dropping Hush off a building and Dick didn’t make a huge deal about that) Bruce also does not trust Damian fully, he gives him lectures about appropriate force and no matter what Damian feels as if Bruce doesn’t trust him when they just start working together in Batman and Robin 2011 (because he doesn’t tell him about Nobody). The main difference is while Dick and Bruce both view Damian as their responsibility, Bruce views Damian as his responsibility as a father – he has to give him good morals (which we can discuss Damian already has morals, but I’m talking about how Bruce feels) and skills so that if he dies, Damian is fine, he has to protect Damian – whereas Dick views him primarily as a potential crimefighting partner/mentee– he’s got a lot of baggage to keep out of the field, he has to train him to do investigations, but he’s not looking to impart life advice and it’s his job both to protect Damian and to protect people from Damian.

For more stuff – I assume a good part of Dick’s perspective (besides what I just mentioned :P) it is just due to Dick perceiving Damian as kind of annoying, kind of a brat, still a kid but definitely dangerous. But his child-like behaviors (in this case, being aggravating) are not things that make him more vulnerable in Dick’s POV, and he’s still got the ex-assassin to deal with. I have seen some interesting discourse with regards to “if Dick did try to treat Damian like Bruce does (being overprotective, treating him more like a son) Damian probably would have ran away and not tolerated it” and I agree, though I don’t think that informed Dick’s decision for how he approaches Damian. Dick’s dealing with his own trauma and issues and he is trying his best in terms of he knows someone has to be responsible for Damian, though eventually their banter gets more friendly and less annoyed and they approach each other more as brother’s or closer to peers. I said I’d get back to the earlier point on Bruce and Dick earlier on, and that is if I remember correctly there are some interpretations that also show Bruce initially treating Dick as a little brother and more of as a friend than a son, and I think that parallels Dick and Damian’s later dynamic, around Bruce Wayne: The Road Home era where we see them easily bantering and having fun while Batman and Robin-ing. for as much as i was fixated on him in c2, it seems obvious in hindsight now he never would have flourished as a character with anyone else like he does with the bells and with the more fleshed out themes of the series. if he were in c1, he would function in vecna's role, not really representing more than the concept of a mage hungry for power. if he were more centered as a villain in c2, there would have been slightly more depth in his concept than c1 by exploring his political intention and his role in hurting others, but i think the m9 would have always seen him as what they did - a threat entirely representative of the system and nothing more.

ludinus is allowed to really be a character through the bells & larger world conflict in c3 in a way that floors me. every single aspect of the problems that led him to what he became are threaded into the geopolitical historical narrative and the bells very actions. he isnt just an archmage or politician trope - he is exandria. he is expressed through every facet of the story. i think in that way he's kind of the best bbeg of this trilogy of campaigns, not even just personally but narratively - he had to be a villain through it all, not just hinted at and appearing in the final arcs, because he is every part of the themes made manifest, and also made as human as possible through interactions with a party that rightfully despises him but cant see that they are him whether they hate his actions or not. matt said he only considered the god conflict and the true ramification of the calamity after creating ludinus and you can feel it. he is the conflict. he is the question.

he is the turning of exandria's age, he is the rise & fall of every civilization, he is the one crushed under foot and the foot crushing, he is a mirror of every single protagonist of the series as much as he is the antagonist of it all. i think it is so astounding that hes so tied to every part of exandria, and so compellingly powerful narratively that even if hes only in 2 campaigns he feels as present in all of them as artagan/allura/kima are to us as viewers, and yet also brings c3 into sharp clarity with such masterful precision on matts part i dont know if he could be anything but the bells' monster.

First of all, this isnt the first time Stede got someone killed. Chuancy was an accident, but he did use the stun move. All of ep 2 s1 was about Stede learning how to deal with it. He still feels bad but as he told the natives. He dosen't feel bad that Chauncey is dead. His crew was under threat. So he stopped Badminton from hurting them. His bad feelings came from somewhere else.

Nighel Badminton got himself killed but it did make Stede run back home and face his problems. When he does go back home he tells the other rich guys.

But everytime it wasn't his choice. The Badmintons were accidents. He never got to actually choose to be a killer.

AITA for turning off a plant light?

so i (25nb) have been staying at a friend of mines (A, 28m) house (which he also rents out to 3 other people, also friends of ours, B, C, and D) for a while now while i look for an apartment. i pay A $250 a month in "rent" which is a courtesy thing more than anything for internet use and to sleep in his living room and am not considered a tenant (plus no rental agreement or lease has ever been offered to me or signed by me). i also help around with household chores (dishes and keeping the living room and kitchen tidy).

in his living room he has this wall of plants set up on shelves with lights and the whole shebang. he has the lights set to 12 hour timers so they have their own sort of day/night cycle. where i sleep normally is a daybed in the corner so the lights dont really bother me when they turn on (around 9). he recently purchased a really bright LED that has a brightness setting that the package has to warn you to not look at directly even at low settings. its genuinely comparable to staring directly at the sun in the summer at noon it's so bright. this light is also on a 12 hour timer (comes on at 10).

here's where the problem is. when my girlfriend comes over the daybed is too small for both of us to sleep comfortably in so we sleep on the pullout couch... which is directly under the Bright Ass Light. we were up pretty late that night (4am) and didnt really want to be woken up by the light shining directly in our eyes so before we went to sleep i turned the light off. i planned on turning it back on when we woke up (around noon) but got distracted and forgot to. A came downstairs while i was showering for work and chewed B and my gf out for the light being off before he went to work. he sent me a message saying "don't touch my fucking light" a few minutes later and i responded by telling him that if it wasnt so bright directly in our faces i wouldnt have to turn it off. he told me the light was for a desert plant so it had to be bright and that i would just have to deal with it as it was non negotiable. i told him to put it in a renter's agreement if he wanted to make demands like that and he told me he would deal with me when he got home from work.

when he got home from work i asked him how work was and he responded by flipping me off, talking at me for about 10 minutes about how i had a lot of nerve telling him what he could and couldnt do in his own home, especially since i was (according to him) making threats and demands. he said it wasnt his problem that we wanted to stay up late so it wasnt his problem that we didnt get enough sleep because it was shining in our faces in the morning and that id just have to deal with it. B, who was in the room at the time, asked if A would like it if a light woke him up like that, and A said no he wouldnt, but that the plant light is different because "the plants need the light cycle". B pointed out that the light was only off for 4 hours, not the whole day, and that plants in the wild dont get that kind of exact sunlight. didnt seem to matter to A, since while he set the timer back an hour so it would come on at 11, he also said he didnt want me ever touching the light again. i was (still am) completely astonished by this whole thing because its... just a plant light. it wasnt off all day and it doesnt happen all the time (this is the second time ive turned it off, again because i was sleeping under it).
