so yknow how like schools ask you to read books over the summer and then write about them when school starts up again? yeah so I completely forgot about that and the only book I read over the summer was the book of bill. so not only did we have to write about the book we read, for my class we had a test for it and we had to write an essay about a quote (or quotes) and use it as a sliding glass door, mirror, or window. so today i had to write an essay in my english about how im a mabel kinnie and based it off one quote and try not to accidentally traumadump to my teacher. anyways

the funniest part is I was gonna include ANOTHER quote like that shit was gonna be longer. the only thing keeping me back was I ran out of time and my hand started to cramp really bad. see kids, sometimes hyperfixations can be useful !

Geography AND linguistics? It is Autism Time(TM).

Once you know what you’re looking for, it is so easy to find examples of repeated words in place names in the real world. Here are just a few examples off the top of my head actually a lot of examples because I love this sort of thing.

Pretty much every language has a suffix used in city names that means “city.” In English you’ve got places like Jacksonville, Springville, Watertown, Bloomington, Park City, or Kansas City. Russian uses “grad,” as in Volgograd (city on the Volga River) or Petrograd (a former name of St. Petersburg.) Greek uses “polis,” such as for Heliopolis or Hadrianopolis (which later morphed into Adrianople and has since been renamed Edirne). That suffix gets borrowed a lot in other languages, such as Florianópolis (Portuguese) or Sevastopol (Russian/Ukrainian). The Persian suffix “abad” (literally “cultivated place”) appears in places like Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. Swedish has “stad” (“city,” although the Danish equivalent “sted” means “place”), used in Fredrikstad and Kristianstad.

Another common one is “port.” English will put it on either side of another word; for example, Portland, Portsmouth, Port Royal, and Shreveport. Spanish uses this a lot too; for example, Puerto Montt or Puerto Rico (originally Puerto Rico was the city and San Juan was the island, but their names were swapped early in their history). Portuguese has Porto Alegre. The Germanic languages use variants of “haven”, for instance Bremerhaven or København (the Danish spelling of Copenhagen).

Speaking of San Juan, saint names are very common too. San Juan, San Salvador, Santa Barbara, or Santa Clara in Spanish (which has gendered words for everything, including saints); St. Louis or St. George in English; Saint-Nazaire or Saint-Malo in French; and São Paulo in Portuguese.

Many cities originated as forts or were named after forts; for instance, Fort Worth in English or Frankfurt in German. The word “Hradec” in the Czech cities Hradec Kralove and Jindřichův Hradec means “castle.” That’s also the root of the Germanic suffix “burg” used in places like Hamburg or Oldenburg in Germany and Nyborg in Denmark (literally identical in meaning to the English city of Newcastle). Note however that Brandenburg comes from the etymologically unrelated West Slavic “brani boru” meaning “war forest”, and the “berg” in Nuremberg comes from the German word for “mountain”; they are only similar by coincidence.

Churches also make frequent appearances - see Christchurch in English, Dunkirk/Dunkerque from West Flemish via English/French, or Aix-la-Chapelle in French (now Aachen, a German descendant from the same linguistic origin as “Aix” but without any reference to Charlemagne’s chapel).

Lots of cities in Norway are named after fjords, including Sandefjord and Kjøllefjord. Another suffix that pops up frequently in Norwegian is “sund” meaning strait or sound; for example, Ålesund or Kristiansund.

The Danish word “ø” means “island” and is attached to the end of many island names: Læsø, Samsø, Agersø, Vejrø. “Øerne” (“the islands”) appears in the name Færøerne, translated as “the sheep islands”; this means that their English name “the Faroe Islands” would translate to “the the sheep islands islands.”

Given the number of dams and dikes in the Netherlands, it probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that their two largest cities are Amsterdam (“the dam on the river Amstel”) and Rotterdam (“the dam on the river Rotte”).

The Swedish suffix “köping,” derived from an Old Norse word for “market,” appears in many place names such as Linköping, Norrköping, and Nyköping.

Many Arabic place names begin with the word “al” or “el”, which roughly means “the.” It’s often left out of translations or transliterations (for example, Al-Fallujah becomes Fallujah), I imagine in part because it’s being used here in a sense that would seem jarring in English when translated literally (think “The London” or “The Charlottesville”). Al and el are two different ways of writing the same Arabic word in the Latin alphabet, and since Arabic doesn’t have capital letters or hyphens, you’ll see both of those elements used inconsistently. Sometimes the pronunciation of the L in al/el gets assimilated into the following sound, such as in Deir ez-Zur or Ash Shaddai. (The closest English equivalent would be the rules on when to use “a” vs “an.”)

Not sure what to call a place? Pick another place you like and slap your language’s word for “new” in front of it. New York (English), Nueva Valencia (Spanish), Neubrandenburg (German), Nova Scotia (Latin for some reason). The Russian city of Novgorod’s name means “new town.” Novi Sad is Serbian for “New Plantation”; Nyköping is Swedish for “New Market.”

If two cities have the same name, they can be distinguished by their locations or other important characteristics; for instance, England has Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle-under-Lyme, and Newcastle on Clun; Germany has Frankfurt am Main (“Frankfurt on the Main River”) and Frankfurt an der Oder (“Frankfurt on the Oder River”); and Russia has Veliky Novgorod (“Great Novgorod”) and Nizhny Novgorod (“Lower Novgorod”).

One of the common threads across all of these examples is cities being named after people - Jacksonville (Andrew Jackson), Hadrianopolis (Emperor Hadrian), Petrograd (Peter the Great and Saint Peter), Ahmedabad (Sultan Ahmed Shah I), Jindřichův Hradec (Jindřich I Vítkovec), and Kristiansund (Christian VI of Denmark-Norway), for example.

Translation can do a ton of weird things to names, like adding redundant words (“the Faroe Islands” meaning “the the sheep islands islands”) or replacing them with an unrelated but similar-sounding word (“Sjælland,” a Danish name of uncertain origin, becomes “Zealand” in English, possibly via German “Seeland” meaning “sea land”; confusingly, it is the Dutch province of Zeeland, also “sea land”, which is the namesake of New Zealand, and neither Zeeland nor New Zealand have any etymological relationship to Sjælland/Zealand). Occasionally a place name will get literally translated instead of transliterated (Nova Scotia is Nouvelle-Écosse in French and Alba Nuadh in Scottish Gaelic). Some places will have completely different names in different languages (variations on Deutchland/Germany/Alemania/Niemcy/Saksa, depending on what language you’re asking in).

Finally, as a note on fantasy names specifically, one of the central conceits of JRR Tolkien’s works is that he was translating ancient texts rather than writing original stories. In order to preserve the sense of the world as Frodo would have understood it, he translated hobbit place names to words with the same English meaning such as the Shire or Brandywine, while transliterating (copying only the sound, not the meaning) of “foreign” names like Minas Tirith or Khazad-dûm. Tolkien being Tolkien, this was an actual literal act of translation to English from a language he invented, but “use English place-name elements to convey a sense of familiarity and invented place-name elements to convey a sense of unfamiliarity” is a great general rule for fantasy authors with even the most modest of linguistic ambitions.

Over the course of what I believe a few months maybe, Alex has been harassing me with strange behavior and as of recent hurtful remarks too. He's been bothering other people as well from what I've seen. Probably going to say I should've just blocked him, but I wanted to keep an eye on things just in case. Today was the point in time after everything that I realized I should let people know about this kid.

I want to show from the beginning to present time of the interactions he's done with me. And maybe something can be done about getting him off the platform...

Firstly I want to say Alex has admitted to being 12 years old... apparently. I know this from this reblog. This already is a very large red flag. Considering the young age, no a callout doesn't seem right but I still want to warn people regardless since he's still active on the platform.

Though I am uncertain if this is true, he did not confirm nor deny my question about it.

Now lets get to the start of things. I don't like people reposting my art anywhere without credit, surely that can be said for everyone.

Randomly in May Alex reposted my art, no credit, mention of who made it, or where it came from. I should mention Alex had been following me well before this post, so he knew who I was. Rightfully I responded with a request to take it down as I didn't appreciate this.

Upon making this request he made a small complaint about it, which was unneeded. While he did "delete" the post, it still technically there, just edited. Therefore never officially removed like I had asked.

He also uploaded two other drawings I did, but he did not remove those ones.

Not too long ago on a post I made showcasing my Chris model, as it had been a while since I posted it, and I wanted to let people see it.

Alex later said some... questionable things about it. And it really made me uncomfortable to say the least.

For context in my AU, my Chris is 29. This has been stated before a few times.

I want to get to the biggest thing here however, as this is what drove me to make this post. The consistent weird and hateful DM's he has sent me.

I have told Alex to leave me alone on several different occasions and he has refused to do so. Again I know I should've blocked but as I said, just wanted to wait in case. Truth is I don't like blocking people, never have, I feel weird doing it. But anyways Alex made a poll a week ago if I recall correctly of whether or not he should keep or delete his account. The poll won on keep. No sooner did this happen, Alex was in my DM's bothering me about it after I again told him to leave me alone.

The DM's are as followed with context and info:

He responded with something along the lines of "Then my account would become lost media!" to which I only responded "No one really cares."

Next post is where Alex starts to mock me for being slow with my replies. I don't quite understand what speed he expects me to write my replies at, I guess 5 seconds?

So as you have noticed Alex is now making fun of my autism, and it's going to continue in this unfortunately. Bringing up a disability in an argument should not happen. However at some point Alex accused me of creating alts to vote against his poll, I have none.

I'm not sure why me specifically... and I hate how me being "slow" keeps getting brought up. Also racism is somehow brought into this as well.

He spammed me with the same image repeatedly, and it continued for a while. Passing that, he wanted me to run the same poll he did on if I should keep or delete my account. I obviously declined.

He then blocked me after this.

Alex in the past DM'd me, when he made those remarks about my Chris model. I wasn't happy then and I'm still not about it.

I'm still puzzled as to why he calls being blocked as banned. Besides that this comes to the end of the DM ark. Alex has done other things, such as suggest people to draw strange stuff, edited other peoples work, steal other peoples work, and tried to stir up drama at one point.

In conclusion,

Alex is immature. And should not be here, especially this fandom. But in general he should not be online, it is clear he has unlimited access to whatever he wants.

I am sorry to my friends and others who have had to deal with him. That is all I have to say.

Sawyer is neurodivergent and you can't change my mind

Last year for Autism Acceptance Day, my good friend @pikatrainer99 and I did a collab post about Goh and our headcanon of being him autistic. Here's a link to that post if you'd like to check it out:

Today, we'd like to talk about Sawyer from Pokemon XY, another character who we both headcanon as autistic, and who means the world to me.

Let's start with his special interest, Pokemon battles. In all of Sawyer's appearances, we can clearly see his desire to learn as much as he can about battling and to grow stronger. He greatly admires strong trainers like Steven Stone and Ash. I mean, just look at how excited he gets when he hears that Ash had won five badges!

And that's exactly what he does for the rest of the series. He spends so much time studying and training that he manages to catch up to Ash within a just season's worth of episodes! But we'll get to that later.

Before going into detail about his most obvious traits, let's go over some of the traits that we only see for brief moments, starting with his sensory sensitivities. In episode 73, we see him getting visibly overwhelmed when the crowd around him, Ash, and Clemont suddenly starts cheering. We also see him shielding his eyes from Spritzee's Dazzling Gleam attack during his battle with Valerie. Note that he's the only one to react this way to both situations. I don't know about you, but I have yet to meet a single autistic person without some kind of hypersensitivity to noise, bright light, smell, texture, etcetera.

We also see in the following episode that he sometimes unintentionally gets too close to people when he's excited, not noticing their discomfort. We see this after Ash wins his gym battle with Valerie, and Sawyer is so beyond amazed and eager to learn from him that he momentarily forgets how to act "socially appropriately". Ash and his friends are visibly uncomfortable, but of course, because they're all so kind and supportive, they don't judge him for this 🥺

We also see in the first episode of XYZ that he's an amazing artist. And I mean, AMAZING! He can literally draw Squishy the Zygarde Core exactly how it looks in its official artwork, despite only having seen it for the first time that day! While not every autistic person has to have a talent like this, it's definitely not uncommon. Growing up, Pika and I both used to draw a lot, and our drawing skills were one of the few things we took pride in because of how much praise we got for it.

Now let's talk about one of his most adorable traits, which is his habit of saying, "I've gained some EXP!" Clearly he's into video games and enjoys feeling like he's in one, because this is definitely not something you typically hear in real life. This kind of escapism is quite common in autistic people, Pika and I included. In a world that's not built for us, sometimes imagining ourselves in a fictional world that we love can be really comforting and even inspiring in some cases.

You've probably noticed that Sawyer is holding his notebook in all of the last three screenshots, which is also something I'd like to get into. Not only is his notebook a crucial part of his character, but it's also a security item. Pika and I both have security items of our own, namely our phones and our favourite Pokemon plushies, which helps bring us a lot of much-needed comfort. In episode 75, we see just how panicked Sawyer gets when he temporarily loses his notebook, which quickly leads to him becoming depressed.

We know that he values his notebook deeply because it contains all he's learned on his journey, as well as an autograph from Steven Stone. But if you look deeper, it becomes clear that it's even more to him than that. He holds his notebook close to his heart, both metaphorically and literally. He hugs it after receiving approval from Ash (which I'll also get to later) Heck, he even attached his Key Stone to it! He cherishes this notebook like it's his baby, and we find that so adorable and relatable!

Okay, now it's time to get into what's arguably the saddest part of his character: his constant need of approval from others. Pika and I, as well as countless other autistic people, are no strangers to self-doubt, especially in a world where we can't meet a lot of people's expectations. Sawyer likely grew up feeling this way too, which would explain why he's always seeking Ash's approval, since Ash is the one he looks up to the most. Throughout the series, Sawyer's constantly trying desperately to catch up to him. What's even more heartbreaking is that even after he beats Ash, he still needs reassurance from him that he's become strong 🥺

And to make matters worse, he's constantly masking his frustration whenever he fails to beat Ash. The autistic community is definitely no stranger to masking either.

It's not until the episode after his Kalos League battle with Ash when we finally see Sawyer breaking down. All those hours of training to catch up to Ash only led to him losing again in their most important battle yet. He was devastated, but he couldn't show that in front of Ash out of fear of being judged. Once he and Sceptile were alone, however, Sawyer was finally able to let out all the built-up frustration. And oh boy, was it emotional to watch...

But being the resilient trainer he is, Sawyer quickly dried off his tears and reaffirmed his desire to become stronger.

It takes a lot of strength to bounce back from something like this. I also went through a lot of inner turmoil around the time XYZ was airing. But seeing Sawyer bounce back like this inspired me to keep going, and make it through the rest of that year with Sawyer as my main source of comfort.

Needless to say, I see a lot of myself in Sawyer, and so does Pika. Not only is he relatable, but his story is also a great reminder that no matter how bad things feel in the moment, we can always make it out the other side. This is an important message for a lot of people, especially within the autistic community.

Even after all these years, I still find lots of comfort in Sawyer, and I know that'll last for many more years to come 💚
