Geography AND linguistics? It is Autism Time(TM).

Once you know what you’re looking for, it is so easy to find examples of repeated words in place names in the real world. Here are just a few examples off the top of my head actually a lot of examples because I love this sort of thing.

Pretty much every language has a suffix used in city names that means “city.” In English you’ve got places like Jacksonville, Springville, Watertown, Bloomington, Park City, or Kansas City. Russian uses “grad,” as in Volgograd (city on the Volga River) or Petrograd (a former name of St. Petersburg.) Greek uses “polis,” such as for Heliopolis or Hadrianopolis (which later morphed into Adrianople and has since been renamed Edirne). That suffix gets borrowed a lot in other languages, such as Florianópolis (Portuguese) or Sevastopol (Russian/Ukrainian). The Persian suffix “abad” (literally “cultivated place”) appears in places like Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. Swedish has “stad” (“city,” although the Danish equivalent “sted” means “place”), used in Fredrikstad and Kristianstad.

Another common one is “port.” English will put it on either side of another word; for example, Portland, Portsmouth, Port Royal, and Shreveport. Spanish uses this a lot too; for example, Puerto Montt or Puerto Rico (originally Puerto Rico was the city and San Juan was the island, but their names were swapped early in their history). Portuguese has Porto Alegre. The Germanic languages use variants of “haven”, for instance Bremerhaven or København (the Danish spelling of Copenhagen).

Speaking of San Juan, saint names are very common too. San Juan, San Salvador, Santa Barbara, or Santa Clara in Spanish (which has gendered words for everything, including saints); St. Louis or St. George in English; Saint-Nazaire or Saint-Malo in French; and São Paulo in Portuguese.

Many cities originated as forts or were named after forts; for instance, Fort Worth in English or Frankfurt in German. The word “Hradec” in the Czech cities Hradec Kralove and Jindřichův Hradec means “castle.” That’s also the root of the Germanic suffix “burg” used in places like Hamburg or Oldenburg in Germany and Nyborg in Denmark (literally identical in meaning to the English city of Newcastle). Note however that Brandenburg comes from the etymologically unrelated West Slavic “brani boru” meaning “war forest”, and the “berg” in Nuremberg comes from the German word for “mountain”; they are only similar by coincidence.

Churches also make frequent appearances - see Christchurch in English, Dunkirk/Dunkerque from West Flemish via English/French, or Aix-la-Chapelle in French (now Aachen, a German descendant from the same linguistic origin as “Aix” but without any reference to Charlemagne’s chapel).

Lots of cities in Norway are named after fjords, including Sandefjord and Kjøllefjord. Another suffix that pops up frequently in Norwegian is “sund” meaning strait or sound; for example, Ålesund or Kristiansund.

The Danish word “ø” means “island” and is attached to the end of many island names: Læsø, Samsø, Agersø, Vejrø. “Øerne” (“the islands”) appears in the name Færøerne, translated as “the sheep islands”; this means that their English name “the Faroe Islands” would translate to “the the sheep islands islands.”

Given the number of dams and dikes in the Netherlands, it probably shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that their two largest cities are Amsterdam (“the dam on the river Amstel”) and Rotterdam (“the dam on the river Rotte”).

The Swedish suffix “köping,” derived from an Old Norse word for “market,” appears in many place names such as Linköping, Norrköping, and Nyköping.

Many Arabic place names begin with the word “al” or “el”, which roughly means “the.” It’s often left out of translations or transliterations (for example, Al-Fallujah becomes Fallujah), I imagine in part because it’s being used here in a sense that would seem jarring in English when translated literally (think “The London” or “The Charlottesville”). Al and el are two different ways of writing the same Arabic word in the Latin alphabet, and since Arabic doesn’t have capital letters or hyphens, you’ll see both of those elements used inconsistently. Sometimes the pronunciation of the L in al/el gets assimilated into the following sound, such as in Deir ez-Zur or Ash Shaddai. (The closest English equivalent would be the rules on when to use “a” vs “an.”)

Not sure what to call a place? Pick another place you like and slap your language’s word for “new” in front of it. New York (English), Nueva Valencia (Spanish), Neubrandenburg (German), Nova Scotia (Latin for some reason). The Russian city of Novgorod’s name means “new town.” Novi Sad is Serbian for “New Plantation”; Nyköping is Swedish for “New Market.”

If two cities have the same name, they can be distinguished by their locations or other important characteristics; for instance, England has Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle-under-Lyme, and Newcastle on Clun; Germany has Frankfurt am Main (“Frankfurt on the Main River”) and Frankfurt an der Oder (“Frankfurt on the Oder River”); and Russia has Veliky Novgorod (“Great Novgorod”) and Nizhny Novgorod (“Lower Novgorod”).

One of the common threads across all of these examples is cities being named after people - Jacksonville (Andrew Jackson), Hadrianopolis (Emperor Hadrian), Petrograd (Peter the Great and Saint Peter), Ahmedabad (Sultan Ahmed Shah I), Jindřichův Hradec (Jindřich I Vítkovec), and Kristiansund (Christian VI of Denmark-Norway), for example.

Translation can do a ton of weird things to names, like adding redundant words (“the Faroe Islands” meaning “the the sheep islands islands”) or replacing them with an unrelated but similar-sounding word (“Sjælland,” a Danish name of uncertain origin, becomes “Zealand” in English, possibly via German “Seeland” meaning “sea land”; confusingly, it is the Dutch province of Zeeland, also “sea land”, which is the namesake of New Zealand, and neither Zeeland nor New Zealand have any etymological relationship to Sjælland/Zealand). Occasionally a place name will get literally translated instead of transliterated (Nova Scotia is Nouvelle-Écosse in French and Alba Nuadh in Scottish Gaelic). Some places will have completely different names in different languages (variations on Deutchland/Germany/Alemania/Niemcy/Saksa, depending on what language you’re asking in).

Finally, as a note on fantasy names specifically, one of the central conceits of JRR Tolkien’s works is that he was translating ancient texts rather than writing original stories. In order to preserve the sense of the world as Frodo would have understood it, he translated hobbit place names to words with the same English meaning such as the Shire or Brandywine, while transliterating (copying only the sound, not the meaning) of “foreign” names like Minas Tirith or Khazad-dûm. Tolkien being Tolkien, this was an actual literal act of translation to English from a language he invented, but “use English place-name elements to convey a sense of familiarity and invented place-name elements to convey a sense of unfamiliarity” is a great general rule for fantasy authors with even the most modest of linguistic ambitions.

Omg ur centaur könig got me thinking about a waternymph! reader who takes care of a local waterfall which she had been born into by the soft ripples splashing on the shore of the small lake, small bundles of flowers and cloaking trees practically it shroud it from sight and any passing adventurers. You're alone, the lake can't hold more than a single one of you and you can't help but feel lonely..

SO YOU MAKE IT A POINT TO TAKE TO ANYONE AND EVERYTHING THAT SOMEHOW MANAGES TO WALK PAST OR FIND UR RESERVOIR

You chat up to a passing chimera called Farah, then another few harpies which had flown by looking for her, another pretty nymph, a few satyrs who tried to be cheeky and get you to come out of the water despite your flustered protests. It's that you couldn't, you just find it odd! You protest despite their little teasing tugs, hands wrapped around your bicep to pull you up where instead, you mischievously pull them down and get them doused and their flutes ruined. You even meet a hulky centaur who seems very sleep deprived, with many other nymphs toddling around him! You greet them with an excited smile and you all immediately become BESTIESSS you help them refill their water, and even let them bathe in your spring, you even manage to talk to the massive centaur who is actually quite polite and curious about you. By the time they leave, you're all basically bawling your eyes out and hugging and despite their insisting you join them, u just can't leave ur little spot like that:( they leave and u wave them goodbye with a chirp and a song. You somehow met the formidable minotaur who had managed to escape the labyrinth, scarred and dirty and helped him bathe and drink some water. He returns the favour by catching you a deer for a nice, hearty meal and some wine which had been left by the entrance of the labyrinth he'd left, forgotten offerings. He leaves after a month of recovery and it's just as teary. But it's alright! U don't mind..:(

Until all of a sudden, when you're just happily sunbathing on one of the tilted rocks in the middle of the small lake, napping on your side,, when you're practically jolted awake by arguing! Uh oh, everyone you've ever met is back and arguing on the lake side about who exactly means more to you(in a more comical way, not in a weird boyfriend girlfriend sort of thing?? Idk how to explainnn) like:

"Well, she combed our hair and gave us forehead kisses!" Arguged one of the many nymphs, pointing at the band of satyrs who looked like they were going to shank someone with their flutes. "So? She played in the water with us!" One of satyrs snaps, giving the girl a mean mug. "How stupid! She let me drink from her personal cup, fools!" The chimera yelled. "Yeah, same!" The harpies tried to butt in. "I stayed with her for a month." The minotaur adds as well, his voice rumbly. Alongside them are myriad of other creatures you didn't even know you had made such an impact on, it would make u cry lf happiness if not for the fact they're still arguing. They all are rather passionate about ur happiness, and they all want to be the cause of it:((

And all waternymph! Reader wants to do is just take a nap..but first priority in her mind! Hugs and reunions! Fuck your arguing! You want to hear about everyone's adventurers! So, with a cute smile, u get everyone to set up around the lake and that night is filled with a ton of fun festivities, drinking and a lot of wrestling among different species(for fun and competition, it's actually really funny to watch!)

•Your cursed technique stockpiles cursed energy the more slothful you are

•It comes with your physical abilities strengthening and your cursed energy becoming more intense (Idk how the hell CTs or CE works)

•You do your daily things, you train with the others and stuff like that, but you always do it the easiest way possible, the way that requires the least effort

•Maki wasn’t a big fan of you when you first started in Jujutsu High, you started at the same time and she found you quite infuriating

•You never seemed to take anything seriously, most of the time you were just lounging around, yawning, looking generally tired and being lazy

•But when she saw you fight for the first time, actually fight against a curse when you were assigned on a mission together, she was stunned to silence, which is a pretty impressive feat for anyone when it comes to Maki

•You always liked her, you thought she was badass and no matter what anyone else thought, strong

•You and Maki actually end up becoming pretty close after you saved each other’s asses on the first mission you had together

•The dating thing just kind of happened without either of you really realizing it, until Panda made some off hand comment about you two dating and you were both like “We’re not dating!”

•Which led to the conversation of ���Are we dating?” and ended with the conclusion of “I guess we are”

•When you overexert yourself, you fall asleep very soon after, therefore you have to be good at distributing your cursed energy evenly so you don’t run out

•You also have to sleep for a pretty long while after to get your cursed energy back to a normal level

•Maki doesn’t really care if you’re lazy, since you still put effort into the relationship and you can hold your own and you’ve got her back in a fight

•Todo used to not have a very high opinion of you, because of how lazy you were

•He felt like you never put any effort into anything, especially physical training, which was very much the case but he didn’t yet understand why

•You never really talked about your cursed technique, because you didn’t see a reason to

•So Todo didn’t know about how it worked or that your lifestyle was very good for your cursed technique

•When you finally got annoyed at his attitude and the constant chastising, you told him about your cursed technique

•Now he can just complain to you about your martial arts and close combat technique, which he does

•Todo actually starts helping you with honing your technique, which includes a lot of sparring and you getting beat because you don’t want to use your cursed energy on him

•He wouldn’t kill you, and getting at least a bit beat up was a pretty daily thing for you as a jujutsu sorcerer

•Todo has had to carry you back from missions a few times when it got tough and you over exerted yourself, because you fell asleep

•He doesn’t mind, and he’s much gentler with you now that you’ve started dating

•Before he just threw you over his shoulder and carried you kind of carelessly

•When you need to recharge, you like to sleep in his bed

I'm torn with Claudia. The humane part of me wants her to stop walking her dark path before she destroys herself completely and find some measure of peace. The fucked-up part of me wants to watch her to lose it and go on the warpath and cause lots of chaos. Is that last one wrong to hope for?

Not at all! I do think we'll see her warpath arc next season, since as Ezran stated/foreshadowed

We all want peace and we all want love. But violence tests us. In a twisted way, it converts us to its cause. Because pain and loss feel so terrible inside, you want to hate. You want to hurt someone else.

Given that Rayla cut off her leg and the trio cost her the chance to save her father's life (since if/when Viren survives, I don't think Claudia will know for a while), I think she'll start chasing Revenge. (Which may lead to even more fracturing with Terry, as "I always believed in you because you had a reason" but we shall see...) And then maybe Soren and Viren will work together to try and bring her home, but maybe only in s7 - so who knows?

But yeah, I don't think ever wanting characters to go through "negative character development" or "fail" means we don't like them or don't understand/sympathize with them. Too often, I think, fandoms can have a tendency to moralize, well, everything, but in this case the choices writers make regarding their favourite characters, i.e. "This Bad Thing happened to Character A so therefore the writers hate them / are punishing them."

And don't get me wrong, I've definitely seen shows where a writing team just did not know what to do with a character, so they just heaped tons of pain on them and/or under utilized them, and who is shown on screen with discussed/processed trauma vs who isn't is definitely a discussion worth having, because none of that exists in an apolitical or aracial space.

However... by no means is the "punishing" angle what's happening all the time, either. What I think it comes from is like, some base assumptions and also a lack of literary understanding for some key aspects I'm gonna do my best at articulating clearly:

1) Operating under an assumption that if you like a character you should only want 'good' things for them, and for them to be a 'good' person, because you are also a 'good' person. This doesn't seem super moralized on the surface, but it explains a lot about "how could anyone like that villain" or offense to "how could anyone want that character to fail" and it's like, idk how to explain that failure and therefore conflict and tragic figures are Just Interesting, Brenda, even if they aren't your personal cup of tea. (I say, as a diehard Macbeth and literary Judas enjoyer lmao.)

2) Ignores catharsis and tragedy as elements of storytelling / as its own desirable genre. Sometimes, you want to watch a thing where you know the whole time everything is going to go horribly wrong for certain characters, or all the characters, and that's what's fun about it. The desirable outcome for every story or character is not a happy ending, nor are all characters or stories built for a happy ending, either. It can be upsetting, of course, when a character we like doesn't get the (happy) ending we hoped for, but that isn't necessarily always the same as a bad ending, y'know? Substantially bad things happening to a character doesn't always mean a narrative hates them; a focus on them is still a focus.

All of this to say: I don't think it's wrong at all to want, or be interested in, Terrible Things happening to a character. It's a thought experiment like any other, and pushing characters to their limits, revealing how they respond under intense or painful experiences - whether than pain is physical, emotional, or something else entirely - is fun and interesting. There's a reason there's are entire genres for Horror and Drama and tearjerker films after all.

Like I've been waiting and wanting for Claudia to snap and become a fully fledged villain since S2 because it was very clear to me just how much she was already Skewed in S1 and S2 made it clear to me that, unlike her brother, she would not be getting on a better path any time soon. Sometimes mess and hurt and mistakes is more interesting than healing, and sometimes it's the opposite (and those things aren't mutually exclusive either).

Like going into S6, I want everyone to Fail so badly (except, arguably, Claudia - who still isn't going to be getting what she actually Needs - and Aaravos, who's going to get exactly what he wants). Watching how characters and their relationships can fall apart, how their own consistent flaws and patterns, can lead them to make awful but understandable mistakes? That's my shit. And getting to see how they do, or don't, come back from that in the season, and in season 7? Chomping at the bit, I'm so excited.

I also don't think that hoping for another end, though, is worse than being excited for a tragic end, because while tragedies are about sadness, they are also - at their core - about Hope that maybe it won't end badly this time. If a tragedy cannot provide catharsis to a viewer, for some reason, then they are still fulfilling their purpose in nurturing hope and indignation in the face of perceived unfairness - that a character could try so hard and still be doomed; that we ourselves often take on tasks that feel insurmountable, that we can take on what looks like a losing battle and still, somehow, win. And maybe we don't - maybe they don't. But tragedies, if nothing else, teach us resilience and the merit of telling a story when you already know how it ends, and the skill of it lies therefore entirely in the execution (sometimes literally).

Basically: hope for whatever you want for whatever character you want, even, or especially, when it's 'bad'. It's what we've always done for a reason.

probably a dumb question, but I'm working on a charlie and etoiles fic and i was wondering if i could get some advice on writing them? (or just writing in general)

the current plot of the fic is essentially that etoiles was a tiny (abt 7 centimeters) person but used technology to make himself human sized, until the tech fails and he shrinks again, while charlie is also tiny and he finds and helps etoiles. it has a modern world/political backdrop in a world where tinies and humans live together

I’m gonna try to give some advice but take everything I say with a grain of salt. I’m just a lil dude with no formal training or “practice”. Idk how I do what I do tbh

All advice under the cut so I don’t take up anyones dashboards!!

For characters, esp mcyt, I’ve found that comilation vids on YouTube are a really great resource!! Heres one I like for Étoiles: X

Don’t always trust my depiction of characters since I myself am not immune to the oocification of them at times. Plus, my guys get shaped by the narratives I’ve forced them into for several chapters so they are not exactly like their cc or q counterparts. But the beauty of fanfiction is that I can play dolls however I please!

One thing I didn’t do in the beginning that I try to watch now is vocabulary for certain characters. For Étoiles, English is his second or even third language. There are certain words native English speakers use that he probably wouldn’t, same for phrases or sentence structure. Earlier, I wrote him a little too… neat and clean with his words. Even his internal monologue was off bc of that. Here’s an example I remember from fingers-

Og: “Please, treat yourself with the same kindness that you afford others.”

Edited: “Please, treat yourself with the same kindness you give others.”

Even now that sounds stilted, I would probably change it to: “Slime, give yourself some… understanding. Be nice to you just like you are nice to everyone else.”

He wouldn’t casually use the word “afford” like I might, and his English might be a little more jilted or awkward. Though don’t always make that assumption- Étoiles is fluent, just consider how learning a new language affects how you use it compared to a native speaker. I still slip up and definitely say things he wouldn’t but I’m learning as I go too!

I wish I had better resources for Charlie but I’ve been watching him for so long now that his character is easier for me, thought I’m not perfect.

When writing starcicle- the biggest thing to note this that they both love their bits. Someone said they get into a recursive feedback loop until one of them dies or logs off and it’s true. They goof off and Charlie flirts with Étoiles, which is sometimes reciprocated jokingly. I wish I had a video of all their interactions, they’re just so good. But yeah they feed off each others silly while having genuinely nice moments like when Étoiles complimented Charlie’s ability to make people smile and the election dinner. I use their separate personalities and the few interactions they’ve had to build on and expand their relationship in fanfics. Kind of like an informed understanding??? Idk it’s fanfiction. You can write them however you please tbh. I wanted my progression in immi to seem a little more natural but it’s still not exactly them and that’s okay! I’m just here to have fun and so should you!!

As for writing in general- dig through related tags on tumblr!! There are some great resources on tumblr and buried in peoples blogs. Look to see if people are tagging posts for personal sorting and then stalk their blog to see what else they find useful haha. I do it all the time… I wish I had a masterpost for this but sadly not yet. I’m trying to build my own tag for references but it’s slow going. Just yesterday I saw a great text ref for writing fight scenes on tiktok so you’ll keep finding new resources all the time. Start your own collection of posts and resources since there is no gigantic one available.

I will say a few things: outlines, no matter how do you them, are great. Jumping off of that- when creating a world like you are, write down all your rules and world building first so as you write, you can reference it and make sure you are staying within the guidelines of the world you created. I do this for hybrids like Charlie so I don’t say one thing and change it a few chapters later.

-Never fully delete anything you write unless it’s minor edits. Remove it from the doc sure, but save it somewhere else. You never know where it might work better.

-Read. Read others work, read books, read articles, read anything creative. I think the only way I can write the way I do is bc I’ve spent the last 10 or so years obsessively reading lmao. I was not a good writing when I tried back in 2011, and I’m still learning now, but just reading so much other material really helped I think. Don’t stay in your own bubble.

-Write for yourself first. You can write to share with others but always write for you too. It’s easy to get caught up in needing “approval” or validation, I do too, but love what you make as well.

-read your work aloud to yourself. This is great for proofreading and also awkward sentence structure/placement.

-when you want something to happen, don’t just flippantly make it happen. That’s how you get ooc moments and actions. Want something to happen and then look at your characters, understand where they need to be in order for that thing to occur. Not just in a physical sense but also a character sense. You can bypass this by letting the audience know if there’s an established dynamic already so you don’t have to build one, but you still need text to support and uplift it.

I have a lot of thoughts and ideas on writing but also I’m not always right. Like I said, look at other creative work, look at other resources. Practice!!! I’m practicing too still

I wrote this to cope with the GRAGGGHH feeling after watching the Lady Nagant episode. Like I wrote this late as hell at night too in order to be normal. I like the way I wrote the panic, it was fun to try and tweak it to be more in character and make the body language and dialogue believable. I find his theme of corruption and being used by the hpsc and feeling shackled to be very interesting to explore. I had to write the boy being comforted for his past or I'd die.

The cutest fic I ever wrote. Pure good feelings. I genuinely love this one, I think it's adorable and head-over-heels!Keigo is my weak spot. I giggled so hard to myself when I wrote about the platonic kiss to ground himself. He's so cute. Fuzzy feelings. Happy happy happy.

I had this in my notes for a long while, actually, and had the idea in my head for longer. It's a catharsis piece, very personal. Whenever I would have a moment related to a Thing, I'd pull out my notes app and work on this and just vomit my feelings onto the page. I still remember stopping in the middle of grabbing groceries and pulling out my phone to type the "what did you make me do" part as soon as I thought of it. Typing outside on my phone like a madman. Very therapeutic. Even though it's my least popular fic (probably because of the subject matter and lack of x reader) it means a tremendous deal to me.

The smut fic of the bunch— HEAR ME OUT, this is one of my favorite smut fics so I picked it as a representative (My other favs are Crybaby, Accidents, and Sweet, Sweet Indulgence. Not including the mini drabbles. I can answer which of those I like if anyone's curious!). So I'm putting it here. KEIGO YANKING IT MY BELOVED!! I like the pacing here, the tension building, the payoff at the end where he mcLoses it. Sexually frustrated virgin mess Keigo :(((((.

This is my most recent fic but also another favorite of mine! Literally helped me so bad to write this. Do not know where I would be if I didn't write it. I feel like, I honestly didn't want to turn this into a fanfic at first. It was just supposed to be a thing for only me to see about how I'm feeling because the feeling was overwhelming; but I wanted to share it, so I turned it into a thing with Hawks (which also helped a ton)! I think you can tell, at least in the beginning part. I break the fourth wall at the end a little which I thought was cool but definitely was worried about doing. I let go of a lot of inhibitions and a desire to Appeal to Others when writing this one. Like I told myself when I was writing over and over, "all my writings are mine but this one is Mine." Very special place in my heart. <3

But my FAVORITE fic is still being written. Idk when it will be finished though, it's a big one— I don't like posting chapter by chapter, so I'm just gonna finish all the chapters first and then slam it onto the table hopefully.

In all honesty, I’ve thought about it. I thought about doing something similar to how some digital artists use Patreon, if that makes sense. Like Yuana has monthly member/subcriptions and they release content on a cadence for those subscribers? (If you like spicy art of jjk and other anime bois, I recommend becoming a member! I had to cancel mine since I can’t justify non-essential purchases rn 🥲)

My biggest problem with this is my own brain, I would feel a bit guilty doing something like that. Not that I judge others for doing it at all, it’s in the sense that I would feel like my content wouldn’t be good enough to justify it. Or like I wouldn’t be able to meet deadlines set because of the pressure. It’s also something that I’ve avoided because I wanted to keep it as a hobby and not an obligation so I didn’t end up burning out and no longer enjoying it, you know? But after losing my job last week, I’ve been considering it more and more just to try to supplement anything I can, you know? I had a full-blown major panic episode this morning about what I’m going to do if I can’t find a job soon because it’s just been rejection after rejection and it’s only been a few days of applying and I was supposed to move soon but that can’t happen if I don’t have a job…

One thing I could do is have multiple tiers, similar to patreon or maybe using patreon, where I post more frequent previews of things I’ve got in my drafts (e.g. au ideas, unfinished or scrapped ideas, things like Bittersweet Memories, the angsty blurb that I now call Stepping Stone thanks to that one amazing anon, and the self-indulgent untitled bit I’ve been writing). I could maybe do member/sub polls and votes to help me choose titles and stuff, too? And I could have tiers that get early access to installments or chapters for the series’ that I have going (e.g. Another Level, Physical Paradox, Gokudō, Before I Love You). It would be a big time commitment because I’d want to do it right, but it could be fun too I think?

If there’s any interest at all, I’ll start looking into it more. I would either use ko-fi or Patreon, I think. Unless I found something better or anyone has better suggestions for a platform. (I think tumblr might even have something like this but idk how much I like it tbh)

Bradley

I feel like Bradley is a textbook definition of an ambivert; that or he's social when he strictly needs to be. Otherwise, he's content not to be the star of the show or the person with the loudest laugh in the room. This makes him able to be incredibly adaptable to his partner's needs, no matter what their personality type is like. Quiet, shy, reserved partner? He's at home with them, catching up on the show they've been waiting weeks to binge together because he's finally home and making sure they have a ton of snacks. Outgoing, super gregarious and affable partner? He's helping them play the role of the perfect host, mingling at the many holidays and parties hosted at their shared home, and practically fucking dazzling every at every social outing.

Reuben

He gives me major life of the party vibes, for sure. Bradley and Jake were squabbling like an old married couple and he didn't have any trouble being like 'anyway.' So, for as much as I love Reuben, I feel like he'd struggle the most with a partner who was opposite from him in terms of personality! He would absolutely, fully commit to the bit, drag them out of their shell, kicking and screaming. He's belting out along with the radio in the grocery store and making everyone laugh, he's the fun uncle who dresses up in a Santa costume for the kids, like Reuben just seems so fun and larger than life, to me. His person, 100%, has got to match his energy.

Natasha

I don't know how else to say this besides she's just so fucking cool, man. People perceive her as standoffish, I think, but I'd rather think of her as observant. So, Natasha is likely, like Bradley, very much an ambivert. Though, instead of electing to find a partner who's opposite of herself, I think Natasha would prefer to be with someone who, like her, can match the energy of a room. Much more than that, Natasha's partner has to be smart as a whip and really able to keep up with some healthy banter. I think having to shoulder a conversation on her back with her potential person would be super irritating for her; she likes someone who can keep up. No matter what their personality type, they've gotta be able to keep Nat on her toes.

Javy

Being best friends with Jake has sort of equipped Javy to be able to deal with every sort of personality type, so Javy is another person who I think is often perceived as a little more reserved, but absolutely isn't. He's just used to his little green-eyed Ken doll friend making a spectacle of himself, is all. Javy is absolutely the kind of person who can have fun with his person in a museum, whispering commentary on what they saw, as to not interrupt the other patrons, and making note of specific works to discuss later over coffee, but also down for karaoke in a sweaty, crowded bar, just to profess his love for his partner in a room full of people he's never met but that absolutely need to know how special they are.

Mickey

Mickey is literal sunshine personified. I believe this completely. Like, he was very much well-liked in school, class president, had a ton of different friends. I feel like Mickey has an uncanny ability to make any and everyone like him, no matter what their differences are. He just gives me that FEELING. So I feel like Mickey would end up in a sunshine x sunshine protector dynamic with his partner, in which said partner is maybe a little rough around the edges but will threaten harm to anyone who dares try to dim the light of their Mickey. This is one of my favorite ship dynamics and it suits Mickey so well.

Jake

He's not quite pushy, but he's definitely leaning on his partner to open up a little bit and be a little more sociable. Like, he's a real "take them dancing and show off some flashy moves" type, but only so everybody can see how absolutely captivating his person is, and how lucky he is to have them on his arm. Despite how big and loud his personality can be, I think he'd definitely be the type to respect his partner's limits; he'd be so in tune with them that he'd know when they've had their fill of social interaction and be ready to spend some quality time curled up on the couch, especially when he knows this is their preference. But, if Jake is with someone whose personality is bigger than his? They're absolutely always trying to playfully one-up each other, and see who can be more endearingly, ridiculously annoying or boisterous. I imagine Jake with a partner whose personality is similar to his is just on level 500 energy-wise, and they're always laughing together.

Bob

My secret hc is that Bob is only shy with the Daggers because he doesn't know them like that, oops! So, his partner fully expects someone shy and, he is but like only for the first few weeks of dating. After that, I think Bob would start to reveal his true personality, which is like singing full-throated in the kitchen while making his person breakfast and striking up conversations with fellow patrons in the Starbucks line (but like in the least obtrusive, least annoying way possible). Bob has such a soothing aura and vibe that people just feel like they can trust him and strike up small talk with him in public spaces. With this in mind, I think his ideal partner is already fairly extroverted, but they're completely shocked by his 180 once they're out of the 'getting to know you' phase.

🌵- What did you start with first for your WIP? Worldbuilding, character, or plot?

I don't have a clear answer for this, since I usually work on all these things at the same time. Generally, I lean more towards character at the beginnings of my stories? Idk but I will share the general story about how The Proper Way to Break a Man if anyone is interested in hearing about the disaster worldbuilding project of a middle school me.

So back in middle school there were two people I was really close with, we talked all the time, we've fallen out of touch since then but (as far as I'm aware) we're not on bad terms. We used to have this discord roleplay server where we had a TON of stuff going on. There were like six kingdoms and way too many characters and plotlines to keep track of, it was a mess, but it was pretty fun. One of the kingdoms I created in that server was Silvarum, which is straight up just a Latin word. I can't find my conjugation charts to confirm if this is correct, but I think I chose it thinking the name meant 'of the forest,' and I bet you can't guess what the main biome of this kingdom was. So I decided 'okay forest kingdom' and basically just started throwing characters in it. I created Rasiel (originally Raziel) first for the main plot which was... something, I think originally the nobility of each kingdom was arguing over some land disputes and Raziel was the spoiled entitled asshole Queen that thought she deserved to take everyone else's land for no reason. She also had her wife Iodia (originally Euodia) at this time. These two characters have stayed pretty much the same since their original creation, the only real difference being that I learned to write them better and stopped making Euodia be a caricature of an abused 'i can fix him her' wife.

So those two existed for a while and I developed the kingdom more. It evolved from 'forest kingdom' to 'forest kingdom that has really advanced technology.'

Now I'm gonna talk about Pio because he's changed a LOT from his original creation. So in Silvarum I had characters mostly given Greek or Hebrew names, a few biblical names, and a few completely made up names, anyone who didn't fit those that I can remember was born in a different kingdom and immigrated there. Hebrew and Greek is already kind of a weird combo to draw names from but it's about to get weirder because out of nowhere i just decided... why not throw an Italian name in there? So among a bunch of Greek and Hebrew names we got Giuseppe 💀 don't ask me why i have no idea why I named him this. The original concept for his character was 'femboy detective' because of course it was. Anyway I can't remember how he went from that to being... whatever he is now but I did eventually change his name to Pio because I thought that was cute and it called to mind the word 'pious' which checks out for him. As for the plot I literally was thinking about how the religion of this kingdom would work, came up with the concept of Prophets and their Holy Children, and went 'hey what if Rasiel decides to do that and is just unnecessarily cruel to her Holy Children' and it spiraled from there.

Anyway I just used this as an excuse to ramble because I'm in a rambley mood today, hopefully that was at least somewhat entertaining. Dunno how to close this so here have a doodle I did a while ago of Rasiel and Pio genderbent :3

Anyhow I fully subscribe your frustration, its kind of a worldbuilding sinkhole by GRRM - I just tend to take the I think opposite approach for my daydreaming that is that if there's no Canon confirmation that a a group of siblings all come from the same mother I make a random amount of them salt sons lol. I even considered it for Rodrik Harlaw bc I Imagine there's a ton of rock daughter vs salt son inheritance dysputes and i really don't see why Gwynesse feels like she had a shot in a dispute with him if they're full siblings - but eh thats definitely One where It would have been said if It were the case and Gwynesse Is Just being metaphorical lol. Anyhow Always a Joy to see people overthink worldbuilding and I Wish you good luck on your writing and on your read of Last Serving Daughter i had a very good time with it

My best guess is that the assumed mutually beneficial alliance between Vic and Hotho would involve two things: 1) Hotho swings Harlaw for Vic using his influence, 2) once Vic wins the kingsmoot, he'll repay Hotho by marrying his daughter and (politically) strong-arming Rodrik Harlaw into giving Hotho the castle of Ten Towers. So perhaps Vic was low-key threatening Asha, because Rod the Reader holds a lot of political sway in Asha's favor, but if Vic throws in with Hotho, then that power is undermined? Idk, if anyone's got a better idea then please let yourself be known.

But yeah, it's frustrating. I know a stupid amount about George's ironborn lore, but it's not uncommon that I look at a particular bit of world-building, think to myself "hm. nah. that's stupid", and totally disregard it lolll. On a personal level, I think George could have done so much more to explore gender on the Iron Islands, but I just need that old man to focus on finishing TWOW. Leave the gender stuff to the experts: tumblrinas 🫡 (affectionate). Ironborn gender gets discussed a ton in relation to Theon (which is fair, considering that homeboy is a cocktail of the worst gender expectations and masculinity Westeros has to offer), but I wanna know more about ironborn women too!!

I just assumed Gwynesse was an old battle axe that liked to make her younger brother's life difficult (same), but that's a fun interpretation too lol. Finally, it's good to hear that you liked "Last Serving Daughter"! That means I should definitely read some more of it tonight 😉 And thank you! I wrote a handful of short one-shots back when I was 15 (a dark time), and then didn't really write again for like 7 years lol. But now I'm back in the game! My confidence (and frankly, competence) has improved a lot in the last few months, and I've been having a great time! These next few chapters of The Fic will involve a lot of Iron Islands world-building, with a ton of details and character backstories that I 100% made up lol. Not a big fan but is smart enough to know that there's a shit ton of money in kpop.

She probably buys up like all the tickets ever for concerts and then charges 10x the original price. The original scalper.

I think if there's a group she likes, she'll save the best tickets for herself.

Also she definitely buys up all the merch and sells them at extremely high rates too.

I think she also uses them as bargaining chips. Like if she's talking to an important business person or whatever she's like "oh I heard your kid likes (insert group), I happen to have tickets to them I could give you a good discount on them"

She probably posted something negative about a big group just to stir up drama and quickly learned to never do that again because her location got leaked LMAOOO

She probably thought about hiring some of the stans because how tf did they even find her???

Gaz:

Idk why but I feel like he's an ultimate stan.

Knows some of the dances, but isn't super dedicated to learning them

He definitely has photocards, lightsticks, albums, etc.

Had a VISCERAL reaction when he was called in on an emergency during KCON and he had to sell his prized P1 ticket.

WHEN he's off duty OMGGG.

This man has like 4 different devices set up ready to get tickets (he's fighting Valeria for them).

If he's on base or on a mission and the time is right, he'll make the rest of the team open the ticket portals so he can have a higher chance at getting tickets.

Cried when he didn't get Stray Kids tickets and then screamed when they released more dates in his area.

I feel like he's heard it in passing, but doesn't really listen to it.

I feel like he's been to ONE concert because he lost a bet to Soap. Soap would've gone, but it was a group he didn't know and he thought it would be funnier if Ghost accompanied Gaz. Ghost agreed mainly because he'd get to spend time with Gaz (he loves his teammates)

He watched all of the fans scream and cry and was lowkey scared

Soap:

He is more invested but not as dedicated as Gaz.

He probably learned a couple dances with Gaz and likes the more popular groups like Twice and EXO.

Would go to KCON if there were enough groups that he liked and just to bond with Gaz.

17: iota (agent 8) is really good with hardware for electronics (especially computers). if you have a virus he’ll hit your computer with a hammer and it’ll work fine. he’ll explain what he did in excruciating detail if you ask.

29: iota absolutely cries easily. he cries when he drops his ice cream scoop on the ground. he would cry the hardest if he was all alone and didn’t know where anyone was.

8: epsilon (cap) cannot cook. like. at all. they have a tragic lack of vegetables in their life because of this and orders food from fast food restaurants all of the time.

20: sigma has LOTS of friends. not a lot of deep-bond friends, though. if you asked her, she’d probably say something like “idk man. like at least 12.” she only tends to make surface level friends because she doesn’t really think too hard about friendships. she’s independent.

24: psi (new agent three) HATES talking. like he does sometimes, but he finds it way more interesting when someone else is talking. she is also socially inept.

twilight zone

4: HOH BOY. epsilon isn’t quick to anger, but when they do get pissed, uh. don’t expect to not get decked when they see you. with petty opinions nothing really comes to mind except for like. hating the french jellyfish because he’s an asshole

5: psi has scopophobia. it hates being perceived at all actually

8: sigma has a tattoo of a steelhead on her forearm because her partner is a steelhead that moved to splatsville because it got bored. she looks at it whenever she’s sad. bonus: her partner has a squid tattoo on its right fin

27: epsilon has a shit ton of piercings. they went to a place to get them done once and got their ears pierced. they went back a week later. they got them because an old woman had a lot of body mods and they were like ‘what if i was a cool old person. with piercings’

29: oh my god okay. so epsilon talks really slowly and uses filler words a lot. so they’ll be like ‘and so ummmmmmmmmmmmm. you should uhhhhhhh.’ for the entire conversation. sigma talks really, really fast and really really loudly. she wants to hold your attention for as long as possible. she also breaks eye contact all of the time and will walk in circles when excited or agitated. iota is mute but when he uses sign he’ll accidentally sign words twice. psi will not make eye contact at all and litters his speech with swear words, even when around young children.

13: psi defaults to flight. as much as she’d like to pretend she’s tough, her brain automates to running away from difficult situations, which also catalyzes a lot of problems she has.

15: epsilon loves writing. they will write constantly. they keep a little notepad in their pocket with lines of dialogue they come up with suddenly. they have an extensive vocabulary and are pretty eloquent (except for the fact that they go ‘uhhhhhhhjhhhhhh’ every two seconds)

19: so all of them have pretty good vision except for iota, and even then, his vision is moderately bad. he can’t read well on a whiteboard from 20ft away, but honestly, who can?

20: iota just. cries. he worries about everything, but he isn’t completely helpless. he does what he can to stop stressing and goes out of his way to get rid of the stressor.

21: epsilon used to not be able to, but they’ve started to get into poems. they help a lot with relaxing

22: i feel like iota would have splatoon geocities as his only form of social media. he would have an incredibly elaborate theme and 500 blinkies

23: sigma likes cheese puffs or even just cheese. yum. she keeps processed cheese in her locker inside of a cooler so she can eat it in between matches

29: psi would use the dab for The Funny

1: epsilon steals things from makomart sometimes.

2: if tearing armies apart counts then yes for all of them. they were just kinda like ‘please have respawn machines bro’

3: sigma has a ton of scars because most of what she does is salmon run. she gets bit by chums and cohocks. the few exceptions are from her running into doors.

12: psi did that when he was younger, but he’s trying not to. she still does it in small ways, but nothing major, and she tries to apologize afterwards

27: boring answer, but no. psi probably used to believe in whatever religion is most commonplace but stopped

3: (cw: sigma sees her mom dead) when sigma was 6, her mother died from cardiac arrest. it was jarring. her father was especially heartbroken and became extremely depressed. he began to neglect his kids because of this. the memory that stands out to her is walking into her parents’ room and seeing her mother slumped over in her chair. she thought she was asleep and didn’t say anything until her dad walked into the room and saw her. at first, she blamed herself for that, but she received counseling.

7: epsilon struggles with balancing work and life. they work themself to exhaustion and have no time for hobbies. iota has to make them stay home when they’re sick.

13: sigma is enigmatic. nobody really knows what’s going on with her. it’s not really because she doesn’t let people in, it’s just that nobody really asks. the few people that she’s told everything about herself to are her girlfriend and marie.

14: to psi, love at first sight is a fairy tale concept that doesn’t have any place in real life relationships. in his mind, you can’t really love someone in a romantic way until you really know them and you’re willing to give everything to them. she’s also never had a partner, so take every she says with a grain of salt.

18: iota loves watching pet videos. they make him laugh a lot and it relaxes him. it’s very easy to make him nervous so if he pulls out his phone and starts watching videos, it’s because he got scared.

24: no but i do have a couple non agent ocs who have

30: sigma got her arm bit off by a maws once when she couldn’t get out of the way in time. she walked off of the helicopter and stood in front the mr grizz statue before he said ‘Holy shit.’

I think there's a difference between a reblog with a snarky retort, and a reply with a rude message. A reply is made on the post itself, and the OP sees it, and it goes in without context of what came before it in the reblog chain. A reblog has the connotation of "I'm writing this for my blog, and for the people who follow me."

Yes, it's definitely shitty to just take someone's post and be shitty to them, especially when they've explicitly asked you not to be, and ESPECIALLY if it's in the replies. But a reblog has a different context. When I reblog something with a message attached, I'm almost never looking at the specific users who said the specific messages. Instead, I'm just sorta going "This message would make me laugh if I was reading it on my timeline, so I'm going to put it here, so others can laugh the way I would want to."

Sometimes it's a swing and a miss, and you wind up saying something dumb, which comes off as super rude. Sometimes though, you say something funny, and your reblog takes off and becomes the version that everyone sees. We wouldn't have the Children's Hospital post without several people being pretty darn rude in the reblogs. The first Prozd sound clip I ever heard was the Pregante video, which is essentially just making fun of a ton of random strangers on the internet. Mbmbam got popular due to their Yahoo answers segment, which often made fun of the ridiculous questions people ask on there.

Would the internet be a much nicer place, if everyone was less comfortable being rude to one another? Yes. I mean, the algorithms on so many platforms intentionally show us things that will make us upset, and a lot of the time, that leads to extremely rude interactions online. But on Tumblr, we curate our timeline to be just the people we want to see, and it makes it feel a lot more personal, and like the people we interact with are our friends, or people we can make those kinds of jokes with, and that's part of the appeal. It would be so much more boring if everyone was just nice to each other. Imagine if there were no straight man in a comedy routine. Imagine "Who's on First, except it's only Abbott." That would be boring. We need the jokester who plays on the straight man, and ribs them, and makes jokes at their expense, because that's how comedy works.

Maybe "fuck you :D (very comfy right now btw)" isn't a great joke, but maybe "Idk about OP, but I've never felt comfortable on the internet" is better. Maybe "OP is right, and I will personally fight anyone who is rude on the internet" is better. Or maybe "What's next? I should start feeling uncomfortable when I say rude things to my coworkers? Or I should feel uncomfortable when I beat people up? Now you're going to tell me there's a law against physical assault now too?"

Or maybe you don't find any of those funny. Maybe your style of humour just doesn't jive with that particular type of routine. I mean, it's your post, so you're absolutely allowed to tell people who can and can't reply, and police which kinds of replies are made. But I just think it's a bit strange to equate "thing that was said in jest," with "actual harmful speech, meant to upset or belittle another."

In that original reply, you are correct. You're not sharing a charming joke together as friends. That person made a joke, and you didn't like it. They had no intention of hurting you, and explicitly said it for the purposes of making other people laugh. They did hurt you though, and it's valid for you to address them, and let them know that you didn't want that to happen. You have a quote up there, "[...] coming into your house and swearing at you [...]" which I think is a pretty apt metaphor for parts of Tumblr.

You see your blog as a personal space akin to your house, which you want people to take off their shoes before entering, and to speak with kindness and respect to you. Most people see their blog instead as a stage, where the few or many people who follow them can see the things they like, and the funny things they say. Sometimes they'll bring on another person, and have a funny back-and-forth dialogue, where they're exaggerating things and being jokingly rude, for the sake of laughs. But I think it can be both. I think your blog itself is a stage, and every reblog is a new person putting your act on their stage, but the replies on any given post are OP's house, and you don't bring Stage Energy™ into someone's home.

People shouldn't be putting jokes or rudeness in the replies, ever. If you're mutuals with OP, then sure. But if you have something that is intended to make people laugh, say it in a reblog. That way people know you're saying it for the benefit of others, and not just as a response directly to OP. I don't know enough about the UI of Tumblr to know if that first one was a reply or a reblog, but if it was a reply... Yeah, that's fucking obnoxious, and that person shouldn't have said that there, I mean... There's a time and a place, and that ain't it.

I think OP has been EXTREMELY kind to others on this post, and I don't understand why people are being really mean to them, ala "for fuck's sake" or "fucking hilarious the irony at play here." Like this wasn't a personal attack at you. OP had a generally good point, which someone clearly misread the situation of, and opset them. Then when OP was like "hey, don't do that?" people started dogpiling them.

Rudeness as a performance piece, meant to make people laugh, and be reblogged and shared for a chuckle? That's Tumblr, baby. Rudeness in the replies or DMs or Ask Box? That's awful, and how you get blocked. There's a social etiquette at play here on Tumblr, and I think a lot of people want their reply to be the one to go viral and make others laugh so much and get so many notes and wind up on Reddit or whatever, that they forget how to be kind, and how to follow the rules of Tumblr.

A reblog is a stage. A reply is OP's house. The tags are your house/inner thoughts. Don't bring your jokes for an audience into OP's house.

We've all gotten just a bit too comfortable being jerks to strangers on the internet I think
