“requiem for methuselah” crazy ass episode for many reasons. Kirk is being fully insane, like I don’t actually think, even controlling for how quickly and easily and readily he seems to fall in love with anybody at the slightest encouragement, that he’d go that bonkers for that android woman he just met while everyone on the ship was this close to dying, but that’s neither here nor there, because in the background you’ve got an equally but much more subtly insane episode for Spock, who extremely uncharacteristically admits to experiencing an emotion (or nearly experiencing, whatever) and that emotion is ENVY of all things. And then spends the rest of the episode warning Kirk away from this new love interest (something that doesn’t usually happen, even when Kirk has very inadvisable love interests) and is, in the end, the person who accurately identifies that Rayna’s competing love for Kirk and Flint is ultimately what overwhelms and destroys her with the most killer line in maybe history???

And then to wrap it up we get an equally uncharacteristic sort of denouement scene (TOS loooves to cut an episode off right after the actual climax, leaving little time for falling action or character reflection, or to stick a sitcom-y button on the end where the gang all smiles and laughs at their misadventures and everything resets to zero, which is not a criticism, it’s just the style of that era of tv, honestly) where Kirk is literally miserable over Rayna’s death (again, kind of unusual for a lot of his love interests, he tends to be able to move on pretty quickly) and Spock goes to see him and he falls asleep right in front of Spock (also odd) and then when Bones comes in to give the final word on Flint, Spock waves him off from waking the Captain (tender) and Bones gives him that awful speech about how it’s sadder that Spock can’t even imagine the love Kirk felt for this random android woman than it is that Kirk lost her in the first place (debatable but also rude) and how his great tragedy is that he can’t love at all like they can and how all he wishes is that Kirk could forget about all of this and move on. AND THEN, to have Bones leave and Spock go over to Kirk and very gently, tenderly, reluctantly touch him and put his hand to his forehead and tell him to forget and HAVE THAT BE THE END OF THE EPISODE??? What am I supposed to do with that??

STAR TREK UPDATE TIME, holy shit! tuesday we watched ds9's "a time to stand" and "rocks and shoals."

i love that theyre just casually mentioning bashirs darkest secret in playful banter now. theres something in there that makes me very emotional but also it's extremely funny. also, he really DOES quote percentages like a vulcan. whatever he and garak were doing, i don't know what that was but i loved it. literally his boyish smile

oh speaking of couples. KIRA AND ODO. they've got the station all to themselves...um, e quark. i did get deluded for a hot second, when they were all at the bar together, into believing in kira e odo e quark. i don't think that's going to be a permanent feature in my psyche but it was fascinating to experience just once

kira in this episode. mwah. she quite literally can't live with herself and it's SO clever because at first you the viewer are also like aaaa no dont let the bajorans protest aaaaaa theyll get in trouble and then kira has the change on heart and youre like oh shit. oh fuck. whose side am EYE on?

also, the fact that this was also odo's kneejerk reaction, and she said "don't make me fight you too" and he immediately fell in line. that's love.

more sneak peak speculation

ok no more being defensive about this jam, gonna talk about things that i think are interesting/could go places. Feel free to reply with your own theories, just no outright negativity? pls? (I dont mind saying you don't like certain things in the context of analysis, just maintain the basic assumption that the writers are trying to tell a story in good faith).

1. In Charades, Spock learned that being fully human would not solve his problems. Any gains he got in connection with his crewmates, or greater emotional availability had tradeoffs: losing who he fundamentally was. Him not being able to connect telepathically with his mother must have felt like losing a limb if that limb was a childhood memory.

I'm seeing how the crew is seeing all these supposed benefits to being Vulcan. But I think faced with the prospect of being Vulcan forever, greater work efficiency is gonna take a huge backseat to completely losing your identity and sense of self.

2. I commented before on ethan peck's acting, but I love how he always does these subtle things in the vulcan centric episodes. Like in Spock Amok, how he became Gia Sandhu with changes in micro expressions. In this one, it is amazing how he goes from feeling extremely vulcan in his demeanor to just "switching" a vibe and feeling so much more human. His exasperation at his colleagues being rude fucks that think they know more about Vulcan than he does was incredibly well played. Can't wait to see how he unpacks it for them and teaches them to do better -- im sure they will get backlash from other humans, too. He is like the only Vulcan "acting normal" in a room of other Vulcans that don't do it right.

3. I love La'an especially how she looks in askance to the things she does to spock, like "am i doing this right?" sorta how spock looked for his crew on tips about how to behave like himself in "Charades". I need to rewatch it, but it feels like they are all play acting what they think Vulcans should act like, and not quite getting it. People are right, they are playacting Vulcans, because that is what they think is expected of them.

4. I love the depiction of the increased sensory perception, almost like they are tripping. I love these investigations into neurological differences, as a person with a lot of sensory overload/sensory seeking behaviors, I appreciate those being displayed in characters. The neurological differences not being "just culture" is what I loved about aliens being portrayed as aliens. How does culture evolve from the material realities?

5. I do like that Pelia and the rest of the bridge crew didn't expect them to complete tasks faster. But they do. The purpose of them being vulcan was not to be hyperefficient. It was a side effect that is tempting to this workaholic crew, but not the purpose of the transformation. I especially want to see how La'an reacts to this long-term.

6. WTF is up with the lirpa? Why do they have one? How is it required to contain radiation? I mean it looks badass but I need more context to their mission.

7. bonus: scotty is so cute. we are so lucky he got added to main cast. This has nothing to do with the episode. I was just so happy to see him.

8. secret bonus thing: I mentioned this in another post, but the fact that their hair grows/is braided/is different is such an amazing visual language. I like them being willing to play with costuming to tell a story here, instead of just having ears/eyebrows. It is a very novel storytelling technique. It reminds me of the end of "These old scientists" where the cartoon aesthetic is used to depict the feeling of orion drinks. SNW being willing to play with the medium of the message is so unique to modern sci fi.

Okay, i have some thoughts on the Spock/Chapel thing so spoilers, obvi.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but i dont think Chapel did anything that wrong. Yeah, she probably should have communicated with Spock better. He’s supposed to be her best friend at the very least, she should want to tell him. She likes Spock, we know she wants to be with him despite what she said to Boimler about not wanting to influence him. she didn’t say we’re through, though. She said, if i need to leave you, i wont fight it. Which to me, sounds like if it comes down to us or me, i choose me. Which she absolutely should! This is her dream! If the long distance was going to get in the way of her happiness, then they probably weren’t ready to commit anyways.

But I understand Spocks perspective too. He is, basically, a teenager when it comes to emotions. Living with them is different than suppressing them like hes been taught his whole life. We know vulcan emotions are stronger than humans too. His happiness must be like ecstasy for us. That excitement of a budding romance must feel like the epitome of love. When his heart is broken it must feel like being ripped in two. As such he put everything into this relationship. In his own song he admits he changed for her because he thought they were on the same page. He blames himself for turning his back on his disciplines for her. So you guys, please don’t change who you are for someone. Especially when that someone loves you for who you are, like Chapel did.

I hope they don’t use this for Spock to go full vulcan. I feel like he could use a better excuse than because he got dumped from a weeks old relationship. Like maybe he goes a little crazy in the heat of battle and they lose someone because of it? Idk.

But i love this development for Chapel. I’ve been hoping for her to get some non-spock related content. Though, now i fear they’re going to make it about her love for korby, which we know will come. I just hope its not right away and they let her be all smart and free for a bit. And more scenes with Ortegas or M’Benga. I love their dynamic. And same with Spock. I want more scenes with him and the other crew.

Overall, I don’t really blame either of them. Chapel should’ve communicated more directly and Spock shouldn’t have changed who he was for her and put so much pressure on it.

yeah i can! im not the best person to talk about it probably since im a pretty recent trek fan and also tos/spock arent parts of trek i care about as much as a lot of other fans, but i have opinions for sure!!

firstly just up front i do not like ethan peck as spock. he does not look like spock or act in a way i am satisfied with. it feels like the only reason they cast him was because he has a deep voice. so i am going forward in this with haterism for him specifically not JUST how he is written in snw

Spock is written not like a vulcan but like an anhedonic human. actually not even anhedonic, just like a human raised in vulcan society trying to blend in. like there is nothing about him that feels genuine he just feels like woobiebait for 2012 tumblr to make flower crown edits of because he is awkward and quirky. every scene involving spock is a joke about him and his demeanor, everything he says is a wink wink nudge nudge "lol vulcans act like this and its so stupid lol logic is silly" like i can physically feel a laugh track whenever hes on screen. i enjoy jokes about vulcans but it isnt funny when there isnt anything else. its like spock showing emotion, it isnt satisfying when its a constant and not a little treat peppered in. in snw hes stifling a giggle or screaming in pain or being oopsie awkward silly every time he gets a focal scene, it takes the magic away because now it isnt a rare break in character its just how he is. Ive seen a lot of people defend this aspect as him being young and therefore less mature than in tos, but hes like approaching 30 :\ i get him being less mature but he doesnt act like a sheltered 30 year old he acts like someone freshly 18. at this point its just like…MAKE A NEW CHARACTER!!!!

as a point of contrast, i like how uhura is written in snw (in season 1 anyways, she has barely appeared in s2) she is obviously younger and is growing into her spot on the crew, but they arent hinging her character on the 1 or 2 pop culture uhura moments, retconning anything about that that doesnt align with modern media fandom, and calling it a day; they actually expand on her character outside of like idk her doing a sexy dance and her sitting at the phone (though i guess it is easier for her since she had barely any character in tos anyways). meanwhile they DO do that with spock, his bullet point top 10 iconic spock moments of sometimes being awkward and showing emotion are now the only things he is allowed to do. tldr flanderization

i also think its interesting that it is this way since ethan peck played spock in discovery and there hes the exact opposite. hes extremely serious and vulcan; which fits the tone of the show (regardless of my opinions on the tone of disco). i just dont understand how that spock translated into the snw spock. they are not the same guy.

anyways on to the biggest plot related gripe with him...how he interacts with women!!!yay!!

first theres how they decided to have multiple episodes about his, apparently, strained-yet-loving-and-involved relationship with tpring. the inclusion of t'pring feels stupid because other than the 1 minute of cheap "oh i remember her!" from someone seeing her on screen for the first time what point is there to her returning when the ONE canonical fact about her is that she and spock A: had an arranged marriage, B: did not meet in person since they were children, and C: hated each other. its not like there is a huge contingency of t'pring/spock shippers holding out since 1967 so what value does reintroducing her as a character serve? i assume its as some kind of attempt to give a woman who previously had no real character something to do, but her existence on snw is STILL only about spock and her relation to spock so there isnt any sort of feminist level up happening. including her was not interesting enough to justify retconning the plot of the most iconic episode of star trek. especially when multiple episodes tonally and stakes-wise rely on you caring about them as a couple, and anyone watching who knows who she is already knows that her and spock dont have any relationship to speak of in the future so who is this for? if you really really just NEED spock to have sex with a woman why not make a new character? that would also suck but at least it wouldnt be timeline interfering. im not even a huge continuity purist "oh no!!the timeline!!!plotholes!!!" but when the situation is the writers deliberately breaking the continuity in large ways and the outcome isnt even fun? stupid.

and now his relationship with chapel. i am way more annoyed by this one since its just gross. so from tos the only thing with them is that chapel has a crush on him and spock is not interested. also worth noting that its such a non-plot related thing that it only is revealed under the influence of alien drug virus that makes you horny. and they decided that not only was that enough to base a whole reciprocated romance arc around, but now since theyve introduced tpring back into the story, spock is now a cheater??? what is the POINT of breaking canon to introduce spocks girlfriend only to go "well actually hes horny for his coworker" like...that isnt how love triangles work youve just done a character assassination. the man who would rather kill his best friend than have sex with his wife is now fucking both her and the woman who confessed to him and he got so mad he crushed a computer with his bare hands. ok 👍. i just hate that they chose spock to be the romantic center of the show. anyone else could have been the character who gets into relationship drama why spock? there are multiple new characters who could have taken up the position. and its not like spock has nothing else to do as a character without it

to say things specifically about the most recent epsiode since it was particularly annoying and showed things that happen throughout the series:

firstly spock just does shit thats stupid. illogical even. i know the whole logical fallacy moment with vulcans but when it isnt a point of note in the show and rather just happens as if its a normal occurrence for spock as a person im like...he would be a laughing stock on vukcan and not have any of the positive reputation he holds.

the plot of this ep was basically that spock gets turned completely human and they just miss literally the whole point of it. vulcans have MORE emotion than humans, they ACTIVELY suppress it. yet when spock is turned human he just experiences human emotion completely emotionally? he should be having an EASIER time suppressing his emotions. and OMG he gets a BONER because he sees a hot WOMAN LOL LOL isnt that funny? spock got hard isnt that hilarious? its just so cheap. they act like being human makes him a completely different person, they played it like the voyager episode where belanna gets split into human and klingon BUT in that case she was literally split into two different people (this ep had a lot of issues too ie racism but that’s a different can of worms); here spock just becomes human he still has the same memories and training and history...why would he forget what its like to be a vulcan. they could SO EASILY make excuses too but they just didnt care. and anyways bada bing bada boom the ep ends with him and chapel hooking up which i already complained about and could complain about more.

kirk is the captain of the Starship Enterprise in the original series of star trek. and spock is his first officer, he's half human and half vulcan and hes my favourite character lmao hes so cool and i love him so much and i could probably write an essay about him alone

these two are like. insane about each other. like. go to the ends of the earth for you follow you into the depths of hell and back again devoted to each other.

spock considers himself expendable and frequently throws himself into the line of fire to protect jim. he Always calls him captain or sir, EXCEPT when its a tender, vulnerable moment. then he says "jim" like its a fucking term of endearment.

jim looks at spock like he hung the stars in the sky. like. full on heart eyes. spock is often the only person who can bring him comfort or snap him out of whatever freaky alien shit is happening to him at the time, and vice versa

spock goes into heat at one point. like. literally. vulcans have a mating period called pon farr every 7 years, and once they enter it they have to fuck or they will die. spock gets out of his by. rolling around with jim in the sand. homoerotically. im not exaggerating.

oh and. after the series ends, in the first of the sequel movies, spock goes home to vulcan to purge all of his emotions, basically the vulcan equivalent of reaching spiritual enlightenment. but. just before he achieves this, he hears jim calling to him from the stars. AND RETURNS TO THE ENTERPRISE TO HELP HIM. INSTEAD OF. YK. LITERALLY COMPLETING HIS LIFE GOAL. and then he mind melds with a computer called v'ger and has a Transcendent Moment, goes back to jim, holds his hand and says "this simple feeling... is beyond v'gers comprehension."

WHAT FUCKING FEELING MR SPOCK. YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO HAVE THOSE. GAY LOVE CAN PIERCE THROUGH THE VEIL OF DEATH AND SAVE THE DAY ETC ETC

Pt two here

warning. wounds, blood, implied torture. 

Banging on the door of the familiar building in the middle of the scrap yard was probably not the smartest thing you could do, considering it was after midnight and there was no moon in the sky, but you had no other choice, you had no where else.

The metal on the door scrapes as the flap moves and a pair half asleep annoyed green eyes look out at you. He takes one look at your scared, shivering form, and the flap slams shut. You hear many locks being opened before the door flies open and you gasp, getting a good look at the man. “What’s going on?” he asks and you take a step towards him, your legs give out and you fall forward, he catches you in his arms and takes you inside, laying you on his couch, noticing bandages on your arms. “I had nowhere else to go. I’m sorry. I know it’s been a long time” you watch as black spots cloud your vision, he kneels down next to you and places the back of his hand on your head, frowning when he feels how you’re burning up. You reach out and brush your fingers across his neck tattoos “sexy” you say and then giggle softly before everything goes dark, the pain in your arms, legs, and back finally feeling a little relief in sleep. 

You wake with a start, gasping as you fly up and a wet washcloth falls from your forehead. You try and catch your breath as you look around you, remembering last night as you took in the room that you guessed was Vulcan’s. as you throw your legs over the side you groan from your shirt moving against your back and  you can feel your arm bandages stuck in your wounds. You find a bathroom but couldn’t find a first aid kit but you did find a new toothbrush in the package which you were grateful for. after cleaning yourself up a bit you tried to find your way out, going up a few different sets of steps, following the sounds of drums. 

Your feet on the steps above him has him stopping his actions as he sets down his wrenches and takes off his mask. He spins around in his stool just as you enter the room. You very obviously look him over, going from his strong thighs to his even stronger arms and chest, when you finally make eye contact he has his eyebrows raised and your cheeks flush. “We should talk” you say and he nods. 

In the kitchen you sit opposite him at the table, sitting on the edge of your seat with your arms gingerly in your lap. he places a cup of coffee in front of you and you take a sip before sighing and meeting his eyes again. He’s silent and you didn't think he’d be otherwise after the last time you saw him, when you left him. As you look into his eyes now you remember that night like it just happened. 

he grabbed your hand to stop you and you sighed “Vulcan. We are best friends and have been since kids, but I need to do this. I can’t just pretend that I don't have something to offer. I want to use my powers for good. To find out the truth. I’m sorry” you rip your hand from his grasp and push the door open, not stopping it from slamming shut behind you. After that he found that you joined Company Three as a second gen and engineer, which just absolutely ruined him. ‘Another person to betray me’ he thought. 

“From the beginning then” he nods and takes a sip before folding his arms across his chest which now has a shirt on it. You take a huge swallow, the boiling liquid burning your tongue and throat “when I left a year ago I traveled from place to place, I eventually ran into Obi Akitaru from the 8th and we devised a plan. I want to expose the truth and fight for what's right and he suggested I offer my services to the 3rd because I had no other ties to anyone. I lied about knowing you i lied about my family, for the last year all i have had were lies and violence and pain. But i was so good at the act, so good at pretending for them that I almost had Giovanni eating out of my hand” you raised you hand and stared at your palm “but then he asked me” your voice cracks “he asked me to” your eyes well up with tears and you look at his face again, taking in everything about him that was different and everything that was the same. You clear your throat but the tears dont stop “he asked me to convince you by any means necessary to have you join them at the 3rd '' his eyes widened and his arms relaxed but didn't fully uncross them. Your eyes never leave his as you finish the story “I said yes, I said yes because I thought that I couldn't have him choose someone else and the only option was to say yes. For a split second though, I hesitated. I hesitated and he saw the confliction in my eyes. He took me to his room then, dragged me actually, and he” you gently roll up the edges of your long sleeves to your elbows, exposing an array of bandages “well, you should see you my back and shins if you really want to know” your eyes meet his again and you can see the pain in his, they are misting over with unshed tears as he looks at your arms, his hands trembling. “He untied me to let me use the restroom and when he wasn’t looking I jumped from the window and ran. that was” you swallow hard “that was 2 days ago I think. I have been running and I hadn’t slept. it’s why i passed out” he gets up and finds the first aid kit under the sink before pulling a chair up right next to yours and turning you to face him once he sat. 

His nimble fingers got to work, peeling off tape that held bandages made out of paper towels to your skin. You hiss when they get stuck on the scabs, the blood connecting it to the paper solid as cement. He grimaces and feels his heart drop and tingles run up his spine. He brings you over to the sink to run warm water slowly over the bandages until they move around easily and didn't cause too much pain. 

When you get back to the table he can finally bring the wet bandages away and the scene makes tears form in his eyes “oh y/n” he says and you bit your lip “please believe me Vulcan. I’d never betray you” you whisper and he nods swiftly “I believed you the moment i saw your eyes” he said as he pours some peroxide over your wounds. Deep gashes in your arms that would definitely scar, he had no idea what to think of your legs or back. He notices now that you are sitting gingerly and not leaning against the chair. “The ones on my legs were the oldest so they don't hurt anymore. Would you mind helping the ones on my back?” you ask in a whisper and he feels his heart break. 

“I’m sorry for coming. I’ve put you in too much danger. I’ll leave after you’re done” you say as his hands swiftly care for the few wounds on your back. He cleanses and you hiss and arch your back. His hand gently holds your shoulder and he brushes his lips across the back of your neck. “Vulcan” you whisper “don’t talk about leaving now. We will figure out what the best option is after i make you something to eat” you nod and grit your teeth as he spreads neosporin and puts on bandages.

Together.” You nod in his hands and he wipes away your tears as you stand up, reaching up to brush away his.  

A year ago you left, at the cusp of your friendship be someone something more. You knew you loved him but you ran away claiming to want to find the truth. You were a coward. One of his hands snakes around to your lower back and he presses you towards him. When your stomachs connect you chuckle and blush, he smiles down at you. “Is this the wrong time to tell you that I’ve never stopped loving you?” You whisper, your thumbs brushing his cheek bones as his eyes widen. “When did you start?” he asks and you chuckle “ my 13th birthday. you made the thing that spit out bubbles from a bunny mouth and you couldn't make it stop and..” “and i had to smash your gift 20 minutes after giving it to you” you laugh and nod “yeah. Then. of course I have had a lot of time away from you to really pinpoint the very first day. I realized I was in love with you 18 months ago when you made me a pancake that looked like a bunny and you made it’s tongue out of a strawberry. I've never stopped thinking about you” his eyes flick down to your lips for a second and your heart beat skips, the stinging in your arms and back seem to fade to nothing as he leans closer to you. 

“Vulcan who’s this?” you take about three steps back in a hurry, knocking down a chair and hitting your back against the fridge. You can feel one of your wounds open again as heat pools out of a cut but you can’t focus on it, your eyes are stuck on the gorgeous redheaded girl with tattoos in the doorway, a boy behind her looking over her shoulder at you. You reach up quick and brush away any stay tears as you take in a big breath, it didn’t seem like he was going to respond but before you can say anything he says in a rush “this is Y/n. an old friend is all”

I don't really watch Holby but I'm always looking for autistic representation, so if you dont mind me asking why do you headcanon Henrik as autistic??

I mean, “headcanon” implies looking into something that isn’t there in the canon. Henrik being autistic is 100% there, he fits the diagnostic criteria to a T, they just refuse to use the word. But I get your point.

This is going to be LONG and I’m sorry. There’s a lot to cover.

Reason 1: He doesn’t understand social cues.

This is pretty much the entire foundation of his character: that he can handle formal, scripted situations fine but is terrible at personal relationships. He’s admitted it himself.

A non-exhaustive list of examples:

In S13E44, the hospital chairman’s ex-wife Ella tries to flirt with Henrik. It goes right over his head all the way up until Ella literally starts unbuttoning her blouse.

In S15E42, Henrik treats a patient with amnesia. While operating on the patient in theatre, Henrik’s ex-girlfriend Maja says what a tragedy it must be for the patient to not even remember who he is. Henrik responds by saying that, in some ways, it might actually be a good thing and that he’d like such an ‘opportunity for reinvention’. He doesn’t even seem to consider that the patient doesn’t see this the same way as him, or that this might seem insensitive to the young man’s plight - he just assumes that because he’d like the chance to start over, surely this patient must too.

In S18E33, Henrik’s worried about Arthur Digby (who is suffering from terminal cancer)’s wellbeing, so he arranges a meeting between some of the hospital staff to talk about it. When Arthur walks in and asks “Is this about me?”, Henrik starts to bluntly reply “yes” - Sacha has to jump in and save the situation by saying “nope”.

In S20E19, Dominic Copeland admits to Henrik that he’s recently been infected with Hepatitis C. Henrik doesn’t know how to respond at all, and when Dom says “this is usually the part where you bestow me with wisdom”, Henrik says “Is it?” - implying he had no idea what Dom wanted out of the conversation.

In the latest episode, S22E15, he goes to visit his friend Essie who’s having chemotherapy. He brings her a book called ‘Surviving Cancer’ and doesn’t even realise how this may come across as inappropriate or too on the nose until Dom points it out to him.

Reason 2: He has a flat affect.

This one’s obvious. He’s not very expressive, and he tends to speak in a monotone. This tends to lead to other characters assuming he doesn’t have feelings, because he doesn’t show them in the way they’d expect.

Reason 3: He stims a lot.

Self-explanatory. If you pay attention, you can often catch him fidgeting with his hands during his scenes. Here are some gifs of him doing it:

He also tends to hum or sing to himself pretty often, which could be vocal stimming.

Reason 4: He has low empathy.

Mr. Clarke the psychiatrist in S19E03 even comments on this. He’s using it as an insult, admittedly, but the whole point of the episode is basically “Mr. Clarke is an asshole, but an asshole who’s right”.

Henrik struggles to relate to people, and can’t feel their emotions. I refer again to S15E42 for one of the best examples of this:

Maja: But he [the amnesia patient]’s so lost. He’s alone in the world. You must feel... something?

Henrik: Not particularly.

I have a whole post on this scene alone it’s so accurate and perfect. (The phrase “a whole post” is a link you should click, BTW. Unfortunately links don’t display on my blog until you hover over them so I just want to clarify that.)

This is another thing that tends to lead other characters to think Henrik doesn’t care about others. They’re 100% wrong. He cares incredibly deeply about those around him, to the point it hurts, he just can’t empathise with them. The show makes a point of reminding us of this regularly. We love good low empathy rep. ♥

Reason 5: He has sensory issues.

One recurring joke with Henrik is that he really, REALLY hates tomatoes. He’s gone so far as to label them “the devil’s fruit” on multiple occasions. Despite this, he’s fine with eating tomato soup, which implies it’s a texture issue.

He’s very sensitive about touch. I don’t think he’s touch-averse, necessarily, but it’s seemingly a more intense experience for him than for others. He’s bothered by people he doesn’t know well making physical contact with him. (One example: in S15E50, his colleague Antoine Malik hugs him. Henrik just stands there awkwardly, not reciprocating the hug, and asks Malik to stop.)

In S15E04, Henrik is shown going into sensory overload from too much stress and too many people talking at once. I’ll just leave a clip of that here. (Again, that last sentence is a link!)

He also wears the same kind of outfit a lot, which could potentially be another sensory thing. In particular, he’s almost always seen with some kind of layers on. Hell, we saw him in his pyjamas with a dressing gown over them in the middle of July last year.

Reason 6: He’s not good at emotions.

I’ve already been over how he doesn’t understand others’ emotions well, but he’s not really any better with his own. He’s clearly alexithymic, and has admitted as such:

One major storyline in series 13 and 14 is Henrik’s romantic feelings for Sahira Shah, a woman he used to mentor. Except... he doesn’t realise he’s in love with her. A similar storyline happens in series 20 with his old friend John Gaskell, but because the writers of this show are heteronormative cowards, no one actually goes “hey Henrik are you in love with John” only for him to passionately deny it (which happened several times WRT his feelings for Sahira). But if you pay attention to the subtext, there’s clearly a late-realisation-of-love going on there, and the actor seems to approve of it (“[John was someone Henrik had] loved for thirty years”, “[Henrik was] blinded by his affection for John”), so.

In S20E28, we see Henrik trying to fill out a therapy worksheet asking him to describe his emotions. He struggles with it throughout the episode, and keeps trying to write something only to give up and shove the paper back in his pocket.

He has very strong emotions, but prefers to try and shut them down, focusing on facts and logic instead because they’re what he can understand.

Other reasons I won’t go into too deeply because this post is long enough, but I want to mention them:

- Reason 7: He takes things literally often. He doesn’t get other people’s jokes and sarcasm, and they don’t get his.

- Reason 8: He has very strong moral beliefs and he sticks to them.

- Reason 9: He literally had a meltdown once (in S20E13).

- Reason 10: Other characters have compared him to autistic/-coded characters in pop culture, such as Rain Man, and the Vulcans from Star Trek.

- Reason 11: This scene with him and the show’s canonically autistic character Jason, wherein Henrik only fucking goes and likens himself to Jason while contrasting the both of them with [allistic] people as a whole. (There’s another link BTW)

There are probably even more reasons I could think of if I tried, but I’ll stop there. I think this is quite enough proof that Henrik is autistic as it is. 🙂

ive likened my dad’s family to vulcans many times. it sounds like an exaggeration but it really REALLY isn’t.

there’s this very specific subculture his side of the family is entrenched in. very religious dutch immigrants who are part of this specific church denomination and very into christian education.

and its like. in that culture you Do Not Show Emotion. Ever. it’s seen as like. you’re too weak in your faith and you’re just being selfish and not trusting god or whatever. so they look down on you. don’t talk about your feelings no matter what. dont be too happy and ESPECIALLY dont be sad or angry at all. no one wants to hear about your problems. just shut up and keep your head down and keep working until you die, basically.

these are the kinds of people who were giving me dirty looks for crying at a funeral just this month. its kinda sick to feel superiority because you didn’t show emotion at a funeral and someone else did. but thats what this kinda shit is like.

i grew up always being afraid my dad hated me because he would never say i love you or act proud of me or goof around or anything like that. he never even seemed like he liked us at all and would always get REALLY mad at us for being upset and that kinda shit. now i know that its just that he was raised not to show emotion or be super affectionate. but it still sucks. 

its why spock has always been such a comforting character for me. recognizing that HEY IT’S NOT A FUCKING CRIME TO HAVE FEELINGS AND TO BE SAD AND SHIT SOMETIMES. spock goes through that shit too.

Oh dude I'd love to hear you talk about vulcan chara! I don't really know much about star trek but I still dig this au

i debated on them being cardassian b/c the smile and duplicitous nature, plus i fucking love garak, and i could just rip off garak w/ chara to be totally honest, because FUCK that’d be so fucking good

but that meant drawing a cardassian a lot so fuck that lmao

a lot of it has to do with considering how i write chara, how chara appears in game, and elements of chara i’ve skipped over to not be constantly mired in their more hateful traits. as it is now, i almost always write a chara who has gone through an entire reconciliation process off screen, which involves them being happier, and helps them to be far more familiar with the people around them. 

it’s self indulgent, but it’s fun. 

however, it is more within the game canon for them to have a more subdued personality. they can be goofy and make bad jokes, but they also have a kind of dry, deprecating wit about them. that mostly goes out the window when they are in the middle of a murder run. they become far more withdrawn.

so that’s where we start with vulcan chara.

i wanted them to be subdued. highly motivated toward a rather perverse goal in a way they perceive to be ‘logical’. a person who can make biting remarks, who is emotionally detached from any action they take (or are made to take). i could have made them human, but i like the idea of chara always being an alien within their adopted home. in this instance, they are quite literally alien, having only been partially raised on vulcan before being adopted by the dreemurr family. 

they weren’t taken from vulcan for a particularly happy reason.

i especially like the idea of chara being put into a situation where they can take a cultural idea like ‘logic’ to its most ideological extremes, like they did in the game, to some horrifying results. i’ve always felt this was a flaw that chara shared with toriel, an almost inherited trait of “eschews ideas so far that there are no other alternatives” . it’s one of my favorite aspects of these characters -- a loathing they can have for certain ideas, but the unwillingness to actually change or confront these issues.

within the vein of ‘subdued chara traits’, i think one of the less appreciated aspect of chara is the fact they quote obscure japanese novels in game canon. it’s all spooky and for aesthetic, but ive never been able to get past this idea of a kid who read, like, old books translated from a foreign language. it’s so WEIRD. they like reading obscure things enough for it to be what they go to quote when killing two people. that, paired with the genuine excitement they get over realizing what a water sausage is, it dont think it goes against their nature to cast chara as a species that has almost exclusively been portrayed as inquisitive and well read. chara is in game a huge fucking nerd so ofc vulcan chara is too. their room is probably littered w/ books about martyrs throughout history, the iconography of demons across intergalactic species, and, dare i say it, naruto?

i like them being vulcan since vulcans harbor a great deal of shame about their emotions, and their relationships… i have always approached chara as having deep shame for feeling things, so they already had that in common with vulcans in general. i like them being vulcan for the fact you’d think it would help assuage their god complex, yet instead reinforces their megalomaniacal tendencies for some very specific story reasons im gonna keep to myself for now.

i like them being vulcan because it gets rid of their smile, which is a shitty place for chara to be.

in general, i dont really write them all that different than how i write possessed frisk. the circumstances surrounding them is a lot different than the ones in game, but i try to have elements run parallel, and i dont really want to make them an entirely differently personality. i like how chara acts in game. i like how i try to emulate that in my own comics. i like them being smug, and a genuinely dangerous person, because i like them trying to be just a little less shitty (if at all possible).

also if they’re vulcan everyone they’ve ever loved is going to die and leave them behind because they live so much longe so lmao

well Vulcans are racist to Spock in very much the same way they are to humans or any other race that does not make use of the Kolinahr (ritual for purge of emotion) because and I think thats the point

Spock was raised on Vulcan and addapted their way of life and tried to follow their logic based life style 

BUT he did not do the Kolinahr, the other Vulcans just claim that he did not do it because he is partly human and his human side preventing him from doing so, what they are actualy critisising is Spocks emotion based life style, because they cant see it in any other way

On the other hand the accedemy has addapted to Spocks choise in some way, like there is one scene where he has to do a psychological test or smth. and one question is just “How do you feel?” a question you would not ask someone who did the Kohlinar. His father asks him the same question some point but he is truly carring in doing so, he basicaly sais he respects Sopcks choice, he even admits he maried his mother because of love. After almost dying again and everything Spock sends his father a message simply saying “Im feeling fine” and this way telling everybody he has come to peace with not doing the ritual and with keeping his emotions.

But I guess the federation cant intervent here as much because the way the Vulcans would agrue it would not be techinicaly racist and most people who are not vulcan dont care about Kolinahr especialy since Spock always acts like he has done it in front of e.g. the crew etc.

(We only learn in the later films he has not when he attepts to do it after laying down service, but even then he is not able to finish it because of the emotional trial)

OHHHHHH MY GOD. OH MY GOD. oh my GOD. okay i lose my shit over Designations Congruent with Things on a yearly basis because it is, by far, one of the most stunning pieces of fiction ive read. full stop. not only is it a feat of fanfiction (it’s GODDAMN LONG. it’s been taken off of ao3, so i cant check the wc, but damn i remember it was long), but as a story, it’s just. god, i dont even know what to say. ive already talked about this fic in a previous ask, so im just going to reiterate all my love again, just phrased slightly differently.

DCwT is an epic piece of Newt/Hermann Pacific Rim fanfiction. it follows Hermann and Newt after the events of the movie and delve painfully into each and every consequence their actions cause. it’s quite possibly the hardest thing ive ever read, for many reasons; the emotions are so vivid and they hurt; the science is so well researched it took me an hour to get through a paragraph because i my brain was still trying to catch up; Run On Sentences For Miles; it’s really, really goddamn long. i remember it got some flack for being over complicated, but in my opinion, the things that make this fic difficult are exactly what make it incredible. it’s overly cerebral in a way two messed up genius scientists would absolutely be. this fic is. i dont have words for it. i have only read the whole thing in its entirety ONCE and i have tried to reread it but goddamn is it difficult. this fic is definitely not for everybody, but it’s a piece of art that gained a bit of a cult following back when it was updating. (theres a fictional band in the fic that inspired ppl to make the band and the music real. RIGHT???) anyway this fic is basically the cornerstone which i worship when it comes to fanfiction as a genre of literature. jesus christ. jesus christ.

I LOVE THIS FIC SOOOOOOO MUCH. it’s a really delicate, heartfelt piece that isnt afraid to be an asshole sometimes, which is basically jim kirk in a nutshell. not only does it go through an incredible reflective relationship with some rando vulcan who decided to take him under his wing, but it does so in a realistic way that doesnt over dramatize aspects, but still ends up very vivid. also, THERES VULCAN LINGUISTICS. linguistics + fanfiction = 10000000% Best Shit EVER.

ghghgfjhdh the first xmen fic i ever read and by far, the most fukcgin hilarious. jesus CHRIST. theres just something subtly incredible about how the author uses phrasing to make every sentence as goddamn funny as they are. im really in love with the comma placement in this fic. every comma is exactly where it needs to be. every em dash is where it belongs. IM NOT MAKING SENSE, but i would send this fic to people as a prime example of narrative humor uplifted via phrasing and punctuation. just read this fic. it’s got Hank POV, Charles being a “strange lecherous Englishman”, Peter being a Teen, and everybody drags Erik’s fashion choices. 

Repeat After Me by queenieofaces [Yuri On Ice]

Victor learns language through mimicry, hears phrases and repeats them back until the inflection becomes second nature. Yuuri seems to communicate best through euphemism, through metaphor, through talking around the subject rather than approaching it head on, and so Victor tries his best to mimic him, to take his words and echo them back.

so ya know i feel like a good starting point is what species she is. uhm, lets see. i think originally in my plans from like 2014 (omg thats when i started voyager isnt it has it really been that long jfc), i believe she was a borg severed from the collective, but like… idk… i feel like in later things i made her half klingon? because ya know it makes sense, i promise. but like that wouldnt really explain her suppression of emotions unless she was also like… half vulcan. and i honestly feel like that would be really interesting because lin’s obviously like obviously angry and can hold a grudge for 3000 years and all that but she also tries to be logical and stuff, but actually has other emotions!! idk where im going with this and idk how ill feel about this answer in two minutes but for now okay. Lin is half Klingon half Vulcan.

alright last one. so like… in lin’s case im making starfleet/the ship shes on or whatever the police department. so like… i was thinkin about why she joined but i guess just like to help people or follow in toph’s footsteps or ssomething idk. i cant think of a main point to bold here. its less of a headcannon and more of a ?????

glindas a slytherin. like i dont get when people put her elsewhere, except for kind of ravenclaw but she’s still overwhelmingly slytherin. she’s ambitious, she’s incredibly loyal but only to a very small group (herself, elphie, elphaba’s family in the books, fiyero in the musical), she can improvise well, im just saying she’s 100% slytherin. elphie is a hufflepuff. she’s loyal to everyone, believes in doing whats good, and all that jazz. i can see her sorted elsewhere, just not slytherin

glinda’s top off her class. like glinda’s head girl or whatever for slytherin. elphaba, even though she’s reallyy really good at magic, prefers to not ya know talk to people. and she gets in trouble a lot because she doesnt care much about the rules. she sneaks off the forbidden forest like all the time to just like hang with unicorns and hippogriffs and centaurs. she gets glinda to go with her like twice but glinda doesnt wanna get in trouble

glinda is better at potions than spells. as far as spells, though, she’s best at charms. sorry, i have no explanation, just a gut feeling really. elphies good at potions and charms too, definitely. she’s also really good at hexes and jinxes

madame morrible teaches charms (or dada or divination idk) and is head of slytherin, and they both hate that bitch with a fiery passion. glinda’d never actually do anything about it, but elphie puts hexes and jinxes on her and her stuff all the time. morrible gets really mad but can never actually prove that its elphie

everyone is kinda confused if/when they find out that theyre together unless they’re part of their friend group. (glinda is liked by most of the student body but becomes a lot more withdrawn when both her amma and the herbology or history of magic prof, dr dillamond, die). their friend group consists of: boq (hufflepuff, not great at magic tbh), fiyero (gryffindor), nessa (ravenclaw, really into muggle religion [she and elphie are half bloods, their dad is pretty anti magic and so is nessa so why is she there ???]), crope and tibbett (both slytherin and obviously dating), and im sure im forgetting someone but…
