Yanqing and Yunli Appreciation Post

Keep Reading cut due to 2.4 spoilers~ (also relatively long-ish post)

These two bounce off each other so well! As a writer, it feels so satisfying to see their characters shine through the quest and the event in the way their interactions highlight them. So I'm gonna use this space to ramble about it!

My previous post pretty much talked about it already, but Yanqing!!! My son!!! I was quite worried that any potential arc for him would be shoved down the road or to the side due to the scale HSR has, but the game's been actually holding up to his ongoing arc. As a result, at least to me, he's come through as one of the best written/developed characters on the Xianzhou so far.

The nature of the length of the updates lets what we get in previous quests settle in for a long while, and considering the mentioned of flow of time in-game, Yanqing's had the time to think and develop as a person. The fact that so many players have had their view and opinion of him finally turn around in this quest is a testament to that. We get to see more facets of him, as in, doing his job and the responsibilities of doing so, and how his insecurities are mentioned in a main quest for all to see. He's constantly referencing others and his past encounters. You can tell that Jing Yuan raised him with his manner and approach to things, which is highlighted by the contrast to Yunli (will get to that soon).

His position as a child soldier has made him mature faster, be quiet even when he's been wronged (filial piety/saving face (aka thank you person on Reddit who makes the banger character Yanqing (and other characters in general) appreciation posts)), take a step back and have to be able to read the room (though, reasonably, he doesn't catch on all the time), and much, much more. The fact that other official content has described him as being more worried about diplomacy and all that. He doesn't have the luxury to be as carefree or brash for someone his age.

There's a lot to unpack there still, even with the development he's had now and that's good! If the Hoyo writing team was wild enough, it'd be cool to see them address the grayness of his role and Jing Yuan's mindset in raising him as he did (We love Dad-Yuan and he loves his son dearly no question, but it'd be so interesting to explore his flaws/mistakes in this perspective!).

Now onto Yunli.

I'm saying straight off the bat, I'm irritated by her!

And that's a good thing!

Her being annoying or bratty or irritating doesn't automatically make her a badly written character! She only would become one if they don't do anything with her, and HSR most probably will, and she should be given the same room to develop in her own arc.

She acts like her age, and she doesn't have the same pressures as Yanqing does. Just like how you can see Jing Yuan in Yanqing, you can see Huaiyan in Yunli, if anything he says is to go by. She's tempremental and outspoken to a fault, and based on the way how quickly Huaiyan relented when she talked back, you can tell that Huaiyan isn't as strict/stern with her to give her a sense of being humble.

I had this thought that she's technically what the general fandom viewed Yanqing as initially, and I'm not saying that as a 100% thing, by the way. But like by some traits and the vibes. She, of course, has a lot more nuance that will be explored at one point or another.

But back on topic, she's a foil. They represent two different approaches and lifestyles and can clearly learn from each other. Her inconsideration of the fact that she's on the Luofu but enforcing Zhuming practices (which I noticed people were upset by, and same; which I imagine is the point), her bluntness to no matter who she's talking to—there's a lot to work with here.

Just like with their swordplay, Yanqing could learn from her mental strength while Yunli can learn from his focused speed and defense. He can learn to regain a more firm grasp of his recently found purpose while she can learn to mature and take in her surroundings and be more thoughtful in that front.

Another interesting note is that where we are with Yanqing currently is in the middle of his arc, we've had the time to see him take a long route of struggle to get to this point, exacerbated by irl players views of him. He's in the middle of his growth and we've had since 1.0 to get to know him. But with Yunli, she was introduced very recently, so we're technically at the "beginning" of her character arc. In a way, Yunli now highlights how far Yanqing has come and changed, and in a way Yanqing now is a potential show for the arc that Yunli can have (not being the exact same as him of course).

I think the idea with these two is that they develop to be more balanced. Balance is such an important thing, especially in Chinese culture (Daoism (Yin-Yang), etc.), and 2.4 has shown how much potential they have to make for amazing character arcs.

It's cool that while they have such similar base traits, they're so different from each other. Calling Yunli a female Yanqing or Yanqing a male Yunli is simply outright incorrect. Their backgrounds, upbringings, ideals, swordstyles, perspectives, and positions in life are so distinct. I'm looking forward to their futures!

I was reading The Monkey King's Daughter (you can read the whole book for an hour) and apparently the protagonist is also Guanyin's grandchild? Can Guanyin be shipped?

I mean I can’t say like what are like the moral implications of shipping GuanYin itself cause that is so not my place but I’m still going to answer this cause it kinda of interesting when it comes to modern media. First off saying that like I have never really seen romance done with GuanYin. At least in a serious way. But if I had to take a guess it can be seen as 'possible' as much as like shipping anyone in Chinese mythos, in that isn't really taken seriously at all. In a lot of modern fan spaces there are a variety of crack ships for more humorous or hypothetical situations like I have seen literally the Star of Venus shipped with Jade Emperor just cause. But I don't see much with buddhas or bodhisattvas in either post-modern media nor in fan spaces. At least that isn't Wukong or Sanzang since they are both Buddhas. And I have done a whole thing about how Wukong for decades wasn’t seen as a romantic figure until like there was a huge character reconstruction, but that isn’t usually the case for most characters.

I would say that the most mainstream instance I can think off the top of my head is The Lost Empire (2001) where it had the main character has a romantic plot with Gaunyin herself. Of course, that wasn't really a masterpiece within itself but this was considered like a 'bad choice' more so that it was just a very strange and awkward romance at that.

Funny enough I think I see more romantic for humor's sake on Guanyin in comic books or games as likes gags at most. Like in Westward comics (later a tv series) Guanyin has a celestial-turned-demon trying to pursue him that he always rejects. Another is more play for laughs but Guanyin in the Fei Ren Zai where people just don't know it's Guanyin and think she is so attractive.

I've seen some games that have Guanyin as like a pretty boy/girl but otherwise nothing even close to a romance plot. Those are more just for like aesthetics of making every character look overly attractive to sell it.

The best I can say is that is just kinda strange and a little strange personally but I can't say that it can be taken seriously. I mean Wukong is supposed to be a Buddha by the end of the novel, so if The Monkey King's Daughter has it that a buddha can have a daughter then there wouldn't be anything stopping the author from having a bodhisattva having kids.

#anon ask #anonymous #anon #ask #sun wukong #monkey king #guanyin #chinese mythos #monkey king's daughter #Wukong is pretty self contained within Xiyouji himself so asking for a little bit of suspension of disbelief can be understood #but Gaunyin has a much longer history that is far more embedded with Buddhist mythology #She isn’t just a character in Xiyouji #and it would be limiting to her just to make it so #but I do think that might be the case in some media when it comes to portraying Gaunyin #esp since most modern interpretations of Guanyin are from xiyouji material just cause the sheer amount of xiyouji content there is #I rarely see Guanyin stand alone moves/shows and there are some trust me but most of her portrayals are within xiyouji spaces #there is a lot of conversation about xiyouji either being a reconstruction or a deconstruction of religion #and while the book is SATURATED in allegorical meaning whether in taoism buddhism or chinese lore it is also seen as satire of religion #people can take xiyouji as pointing out the flaws in humanity but also the flaws of heaven as well as it humanizes both gods and buddhas #this kinda of humanization can be seen as disrespectful to a certain extent but it is what makes these figures more engaging as characters #from a writing standpoint at least #this is me just rambling now about the interesting dycotomy that xiyouji has and has had with religion and how that can be see as today #to a certain extent a lot of directors take xiyouji plots as also their own way to show the heavens in their own way to convey satire #or humor as well depending on what their direction is aiming for #Some even go so far to make that heaven is just straight up the bad guy and that includes buddha as well which is a FAR more wild take than #just having romance in the heavens #But xiyouji does have it that we see these mythological figures have flaws #that heaven can lie or trick or they can take bribes and its up to the audience to interpretation as either satire or if it is critiquing #perhaps religion itself or rather the religious institutions since we do see both daoist and buddist monks as antagonists in the book #this as nothing to do with the ask at this point but i just wanna say my thoughts

need us to stop being a silly little guy for one second and acknowledge that t0ph is rude and it isn't some funny trait. it's a flaw. its a reaction, sure, because her whole life she'd needed to play the part of being the obedient little girl and her rudeness is a result of wanting to affirm her independence and probs as a legitimate way to exercise her confidence and/or to go about her establishing boundaries or things she didn't like, but it's still a huge flaw.

#listen. u mustn't forget that she lived the majority of her life practically spoiled #sheltered sure. miserable yeah. but she is still incredibly privileged #( which she does acknowledge and/or act it out sometimes ! )#and that sort of privilege didn't rlly go away. u could say that she didn't gain things monetarily #but shes also VERY SKILLED at a VERY young age #that feeds a lot to her ego and mixes up with how much she feels like she needs to compensate for her parents' mistreatment #my girl quite literally does not have time to exercise humility #like. on one hand she EARNS everything she is confident about #but on another YES sometimes the way she expresses things shes frustrated about is downright RUDE #like. the rift is a great example bc my girl was a haaaaater when a.ang just wanted to do an air nomad tradition #lets also not forget that in the show k.atara brought up legitimate concerns abt her not ''stepping in'' when they were gonna camp #in both instances t0ph was just reacting badly because of her past and she didn't know how to VERBALISE LIKE A NORMAL PERSON #thats it. but she still comes off as incredibly rude #thats not cute; thats just rudeness.#and i like pointing this out because (A) i want my writing partners to be aware of this but also (B) for suuuure this can be #a point of tension somewhere down the road #cause i do feel like this will blow up right at her face esp as she slowly enters adulthood and realises her friends are Leaving #and i KNOW my girl is not gonna react well about 80% of the time #and i wonder how that'll tie in to that usual thread when u realised that the theme of breaking into womanhood is basically #realising u're losing the privilege of girlhood. this means: how much can ur mistakes truly be excused ?#at what point can ur anger and frustration stop being smth to coddle ?#you're no longer a novelty. now what ?#GREATEST: INTERPRETATION.

I like Dimitri's way of doing things in the sense that he's not just executing all criminals #mister Duscur Tragedy-aware fuckface was jailed but presumably not killed bc Dimi is done with death as immediate punishment #and I think it's very humane to give criminals a second chance if they're willing to atone #that includes a second chance not just to stop being a criminal but to be a normal person again #and ofc it depends on the severity plus circumstances (again no sympathy for killers who do it out of plain morbid curiosity)#that's why I love how Dimi handles Miklan. his case was severe but it was handled as you get a second chance but #the second you try something you're dead on the spot. Dimi knows better than to put his ppl in danger by giving criminals a second chance #he's fair to the criminal in question but also keeping his ppl safe at the same time. it's a very fair method imo #still tho I've seen ppl compare Eren from AoT to Edelgard which disgusted me lol the narrative differences are EXTREME #Edelgard has legit just ruined it for antagonists villains and anti-heroes and it sucks #(I don't mean specifically the post that spurred this LOL I mean I've literally seen the damage TH has done to other media across socials)

just finished 12 season of bob’s burgers and i’m not ready for the movie not season 13

#i wanted to prolong this bas alas #i’ve seen some animation pics from the movie and it looks GOOD #also season 12 was really great arc wise imo it really had the kids address themselves and their behaviors which i adored #i love the kids a lot a lot actually and i love joining bob and linda watching them grow up #i love the moments louise decides she wants people to have fun #and i love when tina has moments where she realizes she doesn’t need the group of friends she’s built #but also she’s embraced their friendship as well especially with the boys #a whole episode where willingly hung out with and helped zeke is IMMENSE growth on her part ESPECIALLY when jimmy jr wasn’t even there #also while she’s still 13 and her crush on jj is still there she’s accepted him as a friend and has learned to treat that friendship nicely #and i love that she’s allowed herself the room to be mean to him too sometimes cause he deserves it whack him again for me T!#AND GENE my baby who is funny enough imo the most similar to bob #like all kids have some traits they’ve got from him and linda but gene reminds me of him in funny ways esp a younger version of him #i really believe bob would’ve been more like gene had his mother not passed and his father not gotten distant #but anyway gene’s seriousness and the way he behaved in the locker love mv episode stood out to me personally #but also the creativity that exists in them both and is expressed so beautifully with what they love #bob with his burgers and gene with his music #and then also tina with her writing and louise with her scheming #but also gene not being too clingy with linda this season is such a refresher cause that was getting too much too weird #and louise is my babh i could talk for hours about her actually #and then bob and linda and their evergrowing love for each other #and then for their kids who they want the best for and it’s starting to become obvious to them that their kids are gonna need them a lot #more often because this season and i’m gonna assume the movie and the next season are gonna introduce more insecurities into the kids’ lives #which isn’t to say they weren’t there before or weren’t insecure before but i think it’ll continue to be pointed out more #they’ve done a wonderful job of raising their babies to be as expressive of themselves as they want to but the world as we saw in the season #12 finale isn’t ready for that kind of expression and it’s gonna hit the kids pretty hard because they’re all weird and different and the #kind of weird and different the world chews and spits out so they’re gonna need to fall back heavily on their parents as well as their #circles which the show developed more this season #with tina and the kids krew and then gene with his growing friendship with courtney and alex and even peter #and then louise and her friendship with rudy and ollie and andy and jessica and millie #tag: bob’s burgers watch

I know this is just a difference of opinion but I find it a little weird when people get so up in arms about Maria not getting her speech in movie 3. Because like... do I prefer the dying speech as a character moment? Yes absolutely. It really shows something about her that her last act in life was to protect her brother and beg him to protect other people despite what had happened to her. But I can also see the point in having her die suddenly and without a chance to realize what's going on. Because that's also incredibly real, and it's part of this Shadow's trauma that her death was so out-of-nowhere and violent. That one minute they were happy and calm and the next she was gone forever. It's also an incredible character beat to have Shadow come to the conclusion that he should protect the planet on his own, rather than just doing it because Maria told him to. Heck, I've seen people talking about the games saying that they want him to gain a motive outside of what she told him to do, but when that happens in the movies we're mad??

Like. It's different, and we can have our favorite versions, but it's not automatically culling Maria's character to have her death be so fast. I 100% get the argument about removing her agency in sacrificing herself for Shadow. And a sudden lack of agency is definitely a bit of an issue when it comes to writing female characters, esp with her being the first female game!character to appear. But at the same time. Isn't that the point? That she was an innocent, playful, kind child who loved her brother and was killed for no reason? Without a chance to say goodbye? Not to mention that this movie gave us a crapton of personality for Maria outside of her relationship to the men in her life– that she's a little artist, that she doesn't really care for rules, that she likes monster movies and playing guitar and talking about astronomy and roller-skating. That she wasn't a perfect martyr figure, that she was someone who caused problems and didn't always think ahead and was a child who never got her chance to grow up.

Maria's character is ALWAYS a tragic figure, it just depends on the universe how exactly that comes about.
