Author Bio ~
Hi! I figure I should get back onto Writeblr now that I'm going to be a published author. :D
I'm Lee Ann Kostempski, an anarchist writer who specializes primarily in dark fantasy and horror, though I like to experiment in many genres. I'm also a librarian. Common themes in my writing include:
utopia
class struggle
disability
gender
sexuality
My biggest influences are Ursula K. Le Guin, adrienne maree brown, Mona Awad, and Margaret Killjoy.
I have one published short story and one published novella! You can read the short story, LIKE IT'S A MAD THING, here in the Spring 2020 issue of 34 Orchard for free (trigger warnings: sexism, depression, supernatural horror, gore/body horror). You can buy the novella, THE WORLD AS IT SHOULD BE, here on the Mocha Memoir Press website or on Amazon in print or Kindle format; (trigger warnings: suicidal intent, depression, gore/torture, supernatural horror).
Contact info, links, & more about my current WIPs under the cut! :)
Current projects include:
DEATH & TAXES -- a trilogy retelling the legend of Robin Hood from Maid Marian's point of view, with a dark twist (rough draft);
PARASOCIAL -- a horror novella about celebrities and fan culture taken too far (rough draft);
FOR THE LOVE OF THE LIBRARY -- a departure from my usual genres, this one's a YA coming-of-age story about a senior in high school fighting to save her public library's Teen Section from budget cuts (rough draft; I plan to post this for free on Wattpad when it's complete);
SOULROT LULLABY -- a short cli-fi horror story about an Earthling forced to team up with a descendent of the wealthy humans who fled to Mars against an unexpected threat (completed & currently seeking a home for publication).
[CURRENTLY UNTITLED] -- a potential sequel to THE WORLD AS IT SHOULD BE following a disabled protagonist who flees life with the witch hunters when she realizes they would sooner kill her than protect her, and seeks shelter with witches (outlining).
I also occasionally write fanfiction over on Ao3, and poetry, which I typically post on my Wordpress unless I want to publish it.
You can find me on Instagram and Facebook as well.

look, even as an anarchist i can believe in the FANTASY that Tolkien puts out... a GOOD king who is just and full of mercy and love for those that are smaller, a world where that could work without becoming an oppressive regime and where power truly doesn't corrupt you if you're "spiritually pure" enough
but an INVISIBLE HAND and a system of infinite growth running on finite resources? fuck right off.

"Creatives deserve to be paid" and "We desperately need community spaces for creatives that aren't focused on trying to make money or advance careers where we're allowed to make connections and experiment" are two statements that can and should coexist.

Writing
My current WIP is called DATE BITE. It's a sapphic story about a transfem vampire, Annie Meadows, trying to survive her first night of undeath . . . and possibly kiss her monster hunting high school bff, Bea Baker.
Though I’m also working on a TTRPG system and setting called MYSTWORK HEART. An eldritch and folk horror steampunk game, about playing half-angel wizards on a train powered by sin. All in a world recovering from an anomalous catastrophe two hundred years before. (It’s set in the past of the DATE BITE world)

this whole luigi mangione thing has got me thinking again about how if the punisher got a revival specifically focused on taking down the top dogs of systemic corruption then he would actually be really popular as a antihero and his logo would eventually lose his alt-right symbolism but marvel is too afraid to say acab and fuck capitalism because of the obvious reasons

i keep rereading this comic (an elseworld story called batman of arkham) because I can't get a full grasp on what it's trying to say. On other hand it understands psychology and the nature of 'mental illness diagnosis' better than this stuff usually does but it sure also paints batman's actions as good. i think?? the premise of this comic is that batman also works as the head or arkham asylum and he beats criminals up as batman and then treats them in the asylum as dr wayne. considering i know the writer's other work i am willing to give him (alan grant wrote an another elseworlds story where batman gets called a fascist and then gotham citizens rise up and kill him) the benefit of the doubt but it sure is bizarre. I like how jon looks tho

What ppl don’t say about being intelligent or multitalented is that you have to hide your skills so others don’t feel insulted, humiliated, or feel like you’re making fun of them for not having the same abilities as you, human beings like to compete between them, and if they find someone who excels at something, the first thought they’ll have is to find a way to exclude that person, so the talented in question doesn’t “steal” the attention from them, so they can be recognized, they’ll find a way to ridicule the “talented one” so others will believe it’s not that brilliant, humans work by ego, and ego also destroys them, destroys the society, and nowadays society is based in capitalism, the capitalism needs this type of behavior to keep humans away from each other, so they don’t work together to destroy it, so humans will always be slaves ‘cause they’re addicted to recognition and instant gratification and individualism will always be attacked ‘cause it’s a form of freedom, and there’s nothing big companies and their bosses hate more than freedom and a mind clear from poison, so if you’re intelligent, talented, whatever word you want to use for it, don’t make yourself little just because everyone laughs at you, if you have an idea that seems crazy for this world, it’s because this world is rotten, not because you’re wrong, keep being free

One of the main outcomes of cancel culture is the realization that we need a healthy and accurate “court of public opinion.” Between locking someone up and letting them go scott free, people collectively need to be able to analyze a situation and determine, drawing on knowledge of abuse, psychology, and emotional intelligence, who is really in the wrong and to what degree; what likely happened; and what a just punishment (if deserved) should be. To what extent should this person’s reputation be impugned?
In short, the mob needs to mature. To learn how to think. So that at last it can start to govern itself.
Without being derailed by obvious narcissism, immature judgement, etc.
Fortunately, this seems to be happening.

Don't Tell Me What to Do
"Don't tell me what to do" is the bark of the young anarchist until they see those with doctorates using them to plan war strategy. Remember that it's the pawns we take first But in the youthful exuberance of being a part of something something that feels big and powerful and real
like revolution?
It blinds us into believing in No gods, no masters unless that PHD is in philosophy and the mouth that uses tongue tangler terminology Flows into the ears like milk and honey enveloping a developing mind that, in all honesty, is just happy to be here
And they'll follow rules in a place that outright condemns the rules And when the paranoia hits and they start accusing everyone of being a snitch you'll still stand behind them, fists raised Burning a black flag
"Don't tell me what to do" The line that births that rebellious heart a DIY scene converged itself entirely in a dingy basement there's an acoustic guitar with only five strings and it's way out of tune But we all know some guy will get drunk enough to pick it up and put on a show
And he'll play songs by Pat The Bunny and the mountain goats You'll get that tattoo right on your wrist because, dammit, this phase is going to stick You just know it.

The Inspiration Behind THE WORLD AS IT SHOULD BE
Cher cannot save everyone, and neither can I. No one can. No single "hero" like Gandalf or Katniss is going to swoop in and magically save us all. And yes, the fascists are currently winning. That doesn't mean it's not worth fighting them.
“Margaret [Killjoy]: I suppose your work does have a fairly dark tone, often very fatalistic or nihilistic. Do you think that mirrors how you see the political situation? Or is it a reflection of something else? [Professor] Calamity: I think the world we live in is pretty bleak (though I am pretty upbeat in person). I’ve always been attracted to characters living in very bleak times, how they’re…

As I am inching towards being 30 years of age I think I found some utmost truth that I will cling to for as long as I will live
I think that hope is like a fungus, its growing in the crevices of everything that I believe in
and I will hold it like Antonio Gramsci said: the only way that we can truly lose as revolutionaries, as progressives, as people who wish nothing more than for a better world is if we give up hope and I won't sugar coat this mess we're in but I will rise each morning and I will do the dishes and I will ask you what we can do today to be less miserable tomorrow
and I will hold it just the way that Terry Pratchett said, and he made Death the one who said it: I'd sieve the world to finest grain and I will show you molecules of mercy, I'll show you atoms of all of the good things I believe in and I will tell you that that kind of hope starts with the little lies that I choose to believe in cause I think he was right if I can make myself believe in what I say each saturday at our game night table then I can rise another day and I can do the laundry and ask you what we'll do today to make sure that our friends will have enough tomorrow; all capitalistic deprivation will be damned as long as we're together
and Ursula K. Le Guin wrote that any human power can be resisted by our human resistance. She wrote that all these systems of oppression that we've been living in won't always stay the same. That they are as unchangeable as was the right of kings to rule. They said that it was godly-given and yet it did not last. And in the spirit of the same I think that I am holding on to hope because to me its all that I can do. Le Guin wrote that resistance often starts in art and I feel called to that. And everytime that someone says that something that I wrote impacted them I know that I have reasons to hold on aplenty. And I won't act like all is bright and like there's plenty lights on the horizon that don't form mushroom clouds; and maybe all the world comes to an end in horror and in agony but I refuse to yield until that day is here. I still believe in better worlds, and I believe there's dishes to be done and friends to call and lovers' lips to kiss; once there is not then maybe I can have a look at apathy.

Maybe I really can change the world just by writing my silly little stories. Maybe just by observing things and writing them down I can change how people see things. Maybe I can make art that touches people’s very souls because I made it because I wanted to. Maybe I am making a difference and I just don’t know it yet

Alright. Gonna set down the feed and plug the thing.
New year, new habits!
I write this travesty!
The site is in constant need of repair, so are the characters, and so is the author (me). Part 1 is steampunk, and in Part 2 we've gone diesel. It starts with a hate crime, this is not for the faint of heart, but it does get quite funny in places. The absurdity is a coping mechanism!
I've got to break my website later so I can try to fix it, but there's a new instalment this week so I'll give people time to read that, if there's any takers!
Known Readers: 2 (hi 5th and Kith!); 1st Goalpost: 10?
If you're reading, check in with me. My hit counter is buggy AF and I moved the comments offsite, to Tumblr. I won't know you're there if you don't say hi!
Known Supporters: I'm burning my Patreon to the ground because they annoyed me, give me some time to set up someplace else! 1st Goalpost: 5?
If you WANT to support, go ahead and let me know that too. I'll be working on a subscription basis in the future - you'll only pay when I publish!
