Happy Valentine's Day I've been given carte blanche and I'm making that everyone else's problem.

Probably a shorter one but I was thinking about it this morning: one of the major elements in Hiraeth is Link's (in this case, Warriors's/Captain's) feelings of homesickness for a past life's home (Sky's). This is a thing that comes up in the Kintsugi AU (I've decided it's an AU at this point since it's diverging from LU canon a lot), that any of the Heroes of Courage have access to vague memories of their past incarnations given the right stimulus. In the case of Hiraeth, it's Warriors meeting Sky's parents on Skyloft early on in his adventure. Sky's memories, buried thousands of years deep, clawed out of the abyss because "holy shit those are my parents LET ME HUG THEM"

(Incidentally, in the SkSw novelization I'll eventually write if other ideas stop ganking me, Sky's parents are still alive during his adventure. Raven is extremely not okay with any of it.)

The same concept is also a factor in Shards of the Hero. It pops up a couple times as just Bad Vibes:

“Majora’s Mask,” [Zelda] whispered. The name sent lightning down Link’s spine, his breath caught short, his lungs filling with ice. Darkness—someplace dark and wet, like a culvert—flashed in his mind’s eye. His hand twitched for his sword. “Link?” Zelda asked. “Do you know that name?” Link shook his head. “I don’t . . . but I think the Hero’s spirit does.” He leaned forward to see Midori on Zelda’s other side. The boy wore a tight expression, but he shook his head as well. The name was unfamiliar to both of them—but not to their shared spirit.

What Link "remembered" was:

Restless nights full of dreams and nightmares, of people and places that Midori didn't know but felt he should. A Sword calling him. The mask spoke occasionally only to comment to itself on the dreams, as if analyzing them for something. Searching for someone. [...] Although the mask mostly kept to itself in the years since his fall into the Depths, Midori had felt it subtly and perpetually drawing on the pool of magic deep in his core. He couldn't remove the mask no matter how hard he tried—and sometimes he wondered if he really wanted to—but he knew the mask was calling on his magic against his will, weaving it around the memories its deep roots unearthed.

Majora was looking for the location of the Fierce Deity Mask, so he could play with his old friend again :) :) :)

(Joke's on Majora, it was the Zonai Sage, Jupita, who hid the mask—The Anchors of Time Recovery Team intentionally hid the location from Warriors, knowing Majora would pull this shit in the future.)

Failing that, Majora found some really fun memories from the Hero's previous incarnation that would be fun to play with. Things like the Hero and his baby sister, the Goron and Zora Champions, his father, the Princess—

Oh, those memories all hurt? All the more fun for Majora :)

So locations tied to those memories became the spots where Majora, using the time magic he stole from Midori, ripped open holes between the timelines :D Specifically, they're in the locations of memories 4, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, on the peak of Mt. Lanayru, near Link's family home in Castle Town, and an interrupted rift in Korok Forest.

(What went down on the peak of Mt. Lanayru? So I actually borrowed a lot from The Zed of Age's novelization of BotW for Link's history, and chapter fifty-six is what went down :'D This is also kind of why Midori is a bit standoffish with Zelda, because the last memories Link had of her were....y'know, kind of rough. Midori doesn't remember things clearly, but she got Vibes of rejection and wanting to respect boundaries)

lucanis is a 'I could sit in our quiet kitchen on a grey tuesday afternoon drinking coffee and talking with you about nothing much in particular forever and be the happiest man who ever lived' romantic, not a 'classic tropes and grand gestures' romantic. this is a distinction and conceptual gap I personally feel is crucial to understanding what's going on with him when romanced. for all his almost painful sincerity and clear depth of feeling he's not a very effusive guy by nature, but in the history of time no one has ever, with their whole soul, chest and being, been so genuinely and openly happy to just do laundry and taxes with you.

Everyone talks about that unhinged phone call from episode 3 which is very fair because that was WILD, but I haven’t seen many people talking about the insanity that is as this little scene right before Ashley and Andrew set up the ritual at the campsite. Where Andrew nearly calls his own sister a tease after she claims his hits don’t hurt, then flirting states that if she tried to leave him that he would hunt her down just to fuck her up.

My mouth was on the floor. Andrew is not beating the sadistic top allegations. Or just the sadistic allegations because what the fuck?!

Little animations for my DR tic headcanons!! To be so clear this is *not* me trying to create good rep, this is explicitly me projecting my own tics onto some little guys using gimmicky plot points and then making art about it! so like. grain of salt and a little ableism cw 👍

Chiaki who freezes and shudders in overstimulating environments, ostensibly because her tics are triggered by sound/light/motion — but then in Ch.6 you learn she was actually just lagging when the computer had too much stuff to render nearby. This makes it even more disorienting postcanon when they remember the real Chiaki, who had a slightly different personality and completely different tics. Most of them were omitted from the AI because it was averaged from the memories of several students (including Hajime) who never noticed or mistook them for fidgeting — helped by the fact that her tics vanished whenever she was focusing on a game. It's convoluted but in a way that I think suits the source material lol.

Kokichi who is an expert at making tics look intentional, because he'd rather come off as "annoying on purpose" or even pretend to mock the disorder he secretly actually has than just admit there's a part of himself he can't control. And he certainly doesn’t need anyone outside DICE realizing the tics are a very honest indicator of his stress levels. He treats his own outbursts as cues to whine that he’s bored; he makes meaningful eye contact with Shuichi whenever he can’t stop blinking, because he knows it’ll make Shuichi lose his mind trying decode a Morse code message that doesn't exist; and in the killing game he pairs his motor tics with the straitjacket uniform and a cringy Joker impression to create some campy caricature of “crazy” that scares the people who are idiots (Kaito) and makes everyone else think he’s just doing an offensive bit — which, for better or worse, he kind of is.

the “shabnak” monster hunting you is pretty directly a manifestation of daniil’s trauma of watching the herb bride being burned alive. when you light the fires to dispel her she screams and her bones horrifying break apart. that’s what he saw. I know some people didn’t like that part of the demo but I think the criticism isn’t fair if it genuinely is about the bone stake lot incident. we’re in HIS head and this is what he is tormented by, it’s not some objective truth about the lore of the steppe

ive decided to mentally rewrite adventure comics (2009) in my head in order to make the plot palatable. kon is still trying to be like "maybe there's good in him??" about lex luthor, but it's no longer because he sees himself as a clex venn diagram, because that retcon is stupid and means nothing to me.

why, then, is kon invested in trying to see if lex has any redeeming qualities?

simple. it's what luke skywalker would do.

ethubs + tango dead bird theory is like. listen. last life is when everything ethubs changed forever despite it being basically the same shit they've always done forever but after that their coworkers start calling them boyfriends on camera. this is funny to reflect on now but there is no better illustration than tango's position in the life series (and hc) before and after.

in s7 tango is the one who basically canonizes Bdubs as the sleep king, and he spends more time on the game district with etho (& even the advent calendar with bdubs) than ethubs do together. when etho & bdubs are doing the Get Out of My School routine, he's allied with the Crastle and bdubs when things go to shit in 3L. s8 kicks off with etho and bdubs floating more collabs (horse course) but it's tango who allies with bdubs in the big eyes and earns the spot of bdubs' storage system.

in LL they all team and also skizz the rpf warrior coins the word ethubs and never gets any thanks for it. fortunately it's mostly just tango that bdubs and etho feel comfortable using as a proxy in their psychological torture flirting where they make tango give up a life to sustain bdubs. bdubs plays this up back in s8, where tango tries to say he wasn't thinking about revenge but bdubs is when they're working on builds in the big eye district. tango (like impulse, when bdubs does the whole "oh this isn't THEEEE clock" routine the first time they meet in s8) will remember this. especially as he continues to get dropped between etho and bdubs like a dead bird left by cats as a gift. i also love in s9 when tango accidentally takes the basement key and they think it's on purpose so they swiftly murder him in synchonous, cold blood before tango even knows what he did. dead birds and doorsteps.

in double life tango's mostly free dealing with the only deader bird than him due to Fate, while bdubs plays up impulse's resentment meter for a change. limited life etho and bdubs do family psychodrama and make it tango's problem after the mob farm convo about loyalty to the end. wild life, they're all three teamed and bdubs and etho agree they'll turn on tango first, though they're all so doomed they never get a chance. and it works bc tango's got his own bizarre homoerotic relationships, he is not part of the polycule per se in the way that ethubs are treated like zoo animals for their freak4freak nonsense, but he IS load bearing in dying so they can have some narrative friction against which to be freaks to each other.
