It feels rather predictable to say because he’s a firefighter, duh, but Buck can be very observant, and that’s such a fun thing to play with about his character. He’s observant on calls of course, and we just saw how quick he is during the scene where he is overstimulated by Gerrard berating him, but still noticed the saw coming loose. But what’s most fun to play with is Buck being observant about Eddie.
Buck can be a little self-absorbed at times, but every moment that we see Eddie going through something or needing a push for a little exposition, it’s Buck who’s there to jumpstart the conversation. He notices Eddie trying to get a hold of Christopher during the earthquake. He notices Eddie acting weird about Ana, and the HIPAA violation exchange between the cardiologist and Eddie. Buck practically spends every waking moment of 7x04 observing Eddie while his friendship with Tommy is all shiny and new (and Buck gets jealous because of it). And then in the most recent episode, Buck walks into the Diaz house like it’s his too (it is, it is), thoroughly distracted by his baking and desire to call Tommy, and yet Buck still manages to turn around and catch Eddie in the act (turning his screen face down), and trying to act innocent eating that scone.
It’s like Buck sees Eddie acting even slightly off, and kill bill sirens start going off in his head because something’s up with his partner. And it gets ridiculous the more scenes they share together because Buck is always seeing right through whatever mask Eddie is trying to put on, and he always calls Eddie out about it (even if it takes him a few scenes). His Eddie-awareness is just insane and unparalleled.

everything about that episode was so good. and i love it because you know what? it wasn't a redemption story for gerrard. he did what he did for himself. for selfish reasons. he was looking out for number 1. he doesn't care about anyone else but himself, his paycheck and his comfort
and bobby nash just knew exactly how to take that and run with it, because ortiz may have thought she was crafty, but she didn't count on a man who misses his lost house so much, he's willing to shake hands with gerrard to get his agenda done and get his family together again

the shift in buck's posture once he clocks that gerrard is mocking tommy (and shoutout to chim verbally slapping gerrard back to 2005)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
then we have buck cutting across gerrard's eyeline (and almost shielding tommy from view). like i know there wasn't anywhere else for him to walk but he did it with intent!!!
very hot of him ngl

Captain Gerrard: Buckley, did you wash the fire engine?
Buck: No, I did not.
Captain Gerrard: And why would that be?
Buck: Because it's June, which means I'm not responsible for any of my actions and if you try to make me complete any tasks you are homophobic. Right Hen?
Hen: Sorry cap, but he is correct, we both have gay month immunity.

To be extremely clear, Gerard is NOT the hero. He did not save the 118 or the Wilson family.
He wasn't the villain either.
He was a pawn, an annoyance Ortiz placed at the 118 bc she knew he would get in Hen's way and create a nuisance for the firefighters at the station.
The reason Gerard didn't really do anything besides be fucking annoying is bc he's not the same Gerard from 15-20 years ago. He's old and unimportant and his opinions and behaviours simply aren't easy to publicly support even for people who still believe them. He doesn't have the power or backing that he used to.
So. He isn't a villain. He's just a washout who was plucked moments away from fading out of relevance and plopped into a position to be a hindrance to people who originally dethroned him from his imagined kingdom by the real villain.
On the other hand, he isn't a hero.
He didn't swoop in and decide to save the 118. It wasn't even his idea to record Ortiz.
He's a pawn with no king. He was Ortiz's pawn not because he held any loyalty or respect for her, but bc she was a powerful figure willing to give him back a taste of that lost sense of power. But he only ever cares about himself and is the type to happily switch sides for a price.
Bobby understood that. He understood that Gerard is the kind of man with no loyalty or purpose, just a false sense of grandeur and a need to be the centre of attention. The perfect Trojan Horse.
It was Bobby's plan to manipulate Gerard into wanting to humiliate Ortiz the way Bobby made Gerard think she was humiliating him. It was his plan to use the body cams against her to expose her and take her power away.
Bobby is the hero.
Gerard was his pawn.
Bobby saved the 118. Capisce?
