one of my friends growing up was a very visibly autistic boy. because he was a boy and not a girl, everyone treated him like a potential predator. we went to school together, and the girls would avoid him and the teachers actively encouraged the girls to avoid him.

i was an autistic girl, in comparison. nobody treated ME like that. they treated my friend like that specifically because he was a boy, and so the idea of dangerous predatory men was used against him

like. masculinity and being a man is very much used in oppressive tactics. being a man changes what cruel stereotypes can be used against you, and it's socially acceptable to be more physically violent and aggressive towards people perceived as men. people are still physically violent and aggressive towards people perceived as women, yes, but when my friend was getting shoved around, there was no talk of 'you shouldn't hit a girl'

just drives me MAD that people deny that masculinity affects oppression when it so very fucking clearly does

(my friend is doing much better now. they have come out as he/they nonbinary and are studying at university. we have been friends for a decade now ans they are one of my closest friends to this day)

TRFs will say "but that was because he was autistic not because he was a man, therefore trans men still have privilege" and not realize that trans is also a modifier that dramatically changes how one's masculinity is taken.

Like that's the thing I don't get, you know? Trans men are trans men. There is a fundamental refusal to accept that they are TRANS men. They'll say Black men and autistic men and whoever else can have their masculinity used against them, but that it doesn't count because it's just racism or ableism. The most they'll acknowledge that trans men are trans at all is the extremely misogynistic lie that trans men can and will revert to being women the second it can be weaponized against trans women, which is basically just saying trans men are cis in the opposite direction.

Like, how does that even make sense? How are trans men just like cis men if they're so quick to become women for social credibility? That doesn't...

I just know for sure that Glinda, GUH-LINDA, is a pillow princess. However, she's surprisingly a sweet girl, not so brat, ready to do anything you ask all just to make you happy and hear you say: "My good girl." Oh! Pet Peeve: people saying underage when what they mean is under 18. Underage is a legal term which refers to the legal age of consent which differs from country to country and even sometimes state to state. It also differs over time.

So no it wasn't legal in 18th century England to have sex with underage girls it was however legal to have sex with girls who were under the age of 18 (and still is). 18th century England did have age of consent laws it's just that the age of consent was much lower than 18 (10 for girls 14 for boys).

It's important to remember that legality and morality are different things. When we talk about historical legal systems we need to distinguish between what was legal/illegal and what is moral/immoral.

I'm just saying, etymological nitpicking is just a handy, bad faith argument that's gotten regurgitated over and over again. Remember when "aphobia" was a Bad word for the commonalities of acephobia & arophobia bc it could be interpreted as "fear of nothing"? Or how about the 20 million terms for allosexual we had to jump through bc there was always some issue with the prior proposed ones, and even "allosexual" and "aspec" were ~problematic~ bc they allegedly stole from autistic people. (Not that any autistic aspecs were considered worth hearing on that, mind. We either didn't know what was good for us or were lying about being autistic for discourse points. 🙄)

You will never find a term for transandrophobia that is etymologically pure enough, bc the point isn't about it being constructed wrong as a word. Either you're too distracted arguing that it's fine as it is or you concede and construct a million alternate terms, that are also substandard somehow, until you're too exhausted and just shut up.

ohhhh my god the lily was a bad friend to Snape thing pisses me off so fucking much. just willful misreading and frankly sometimes disturbing blaseness towards what the real problem was (not just the slur! JOINING A FUCKING HATE GROUP! and also slurs are bad--we should be able to understand this, right?) I mean one of the problems with it is that it doesn't fully understand the multiple power dynamics at play--blood status, gender, AND social class are all important in the lily/Snape and Lily/Snape/marauders dynamics. And also? I think Lily is meant to be read as not actually of a significantly higher class than Snape--she's working class but her family is slightly more financially stable and determined to hold themselves above him! So the class dynamics aren't 'rich popular girl Lily and poor bullied Snape' it's 'also poor but slightly less poor Lily'!! AND this interaction cannot be read without Snape's blood status privilege. And. Of course. The fact that him calling her a mudblood in public was a sign of him fully embracing Death Eater ideals and he went on to join the Death Eaters--having already been associating with them for a while. The initial slur isn't even forgiveable but it becomes even more heinous when you remember he was joining a group dedicated to exterminating her because of who she was. Why should she give a shit about who bullied him anymore? When we talk about what Lily and Snape are doing post Snape's Worst Memory, I would say that the fact Snape joins the freaking Death Eaters is a far worse betrayal of their friendship than Lily marrying James (which isn't even a betrayal, exactly, as she is, you know, an autonomous person with her own wants needs and opinions).
