So here's the rub that I think a lot of people aren't grasping.

Not liking E|riel doesn't equate to disliking Elain or Azriel individually. For me, it's a strong aversion to their dynamic.

There's just absolutely no force on this earth that would make me want Azriel to have a forbidden love with anyone. Ever. For even the briefest period of time. It could be anyone in the series, and I still wouldn't like it. But particularly not with someone he thinks he's tainting with his touch especially.

And no, you can not change my mind about this. Not even SJM can change my mind about that. If she, for whatever godforsaken reason, decided to abandon fated mates as a literary component and give us an E|riel book, I wouldn't read it. I'd probably skim for their respective moments of character development, but that's about it.

I like fated mates. I hate forbidden romance for Azriel. I don't like the idea of Elain having to constantly reassure Azriel that she's not going to leave him for her mate, who is very much alive and works for the Night Court. (It's almost like I write a romance for him with his mate for these exact ressons...)

In other words... 2+ 2 =4.

Every single moment between them in text is outweighed to me by how I see their dynamic. That's it. I will never not see their relationship potential as leaning too much to codependency, insecurity, and toxicity for my liking. With the world that SJM has built around mates, she's failed to convince me that won't happen.

It's not hard to understand. You don't need to add in factors about liking or disliking the characters involved for you to feel more validated by liking something you think is "better" or "morally correct".

I'm just not the target audience. Wild conclusion to come to, I know.

Why are you so insecure that you feel the need to "prove" you're somehow a more valid or better fan than either character based on this?

Also not related to reply but I get angry enough to spit blood when a certain group of people screams with their whole chest "ELAIN SHALL WED FOR LOVE AND BEAUTY"...

...and then use that quote for secret marriage scenarios. That's your definition of love and beauty???

“Elain shall wed for love and beauty,” can easily be applied to Elucien as Lucien is canonically incredibly beautiful.

These lines are said exactly one after the other and are so in contrast.

Lucien, who thinks about what Elain might be needing and Azriel who thinks about his and the IC needs at that moment. Idk how the latter is considered "romantic" by some people.

Elain liked to garden as a human and continues as a fae.

She has since discovered that she also likes baking.

Ok but imagine Elain and Lucien arguing about the bond and Lucien blurts out something like "I'm sorry the Cauldron gave you a mate who's so disfigured you can barely bring yourself to look at me" or something like that and Elain just pauses in utter shock because that is the exact opposite of why she can't look him in the eyes.

The truth is, he's so devastatingly handsome that she can't bring herself to look at him fully without blushing. And the thought that he could ever find himself unworthy of her nearly brings her to tears.
