In 2024, Barbie has returned to her usual place in society's collective attention, but I want more aro clothes for my fashion dolls. (Too much green? No such thing!) So once again for @aggressivelyarospec's Aggressively Arospectacular, I'm sharing additions to my handsewn aromantic and allosexual-aromantic pride wardrobe.
Today, I'm showing off a selection of ruffle-trimmed skirts in aromantic colours and discussing techniques for (hand) sewing less-labour-intensive ruffles.

I was very excited to discover miniature arrow charms in the scrapbooking section at my local craft store and a pair of pineapple-print underpants in my unworn spare-clothes stash*. With the addition of a colour-block T-shirt in allo-aro colours, my dolls are being extra aromantic this Pride Month.
(* Autism sensory stuff means the challenge of finding clothes with the right kind of not-hurting-me seams and fabrics, so when garments I tolerate go on clearance, I collect a few spares. I figure it's worth sacrificing one to make a pineapple doll top, though!)

Can you talk more about aromanticism in Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep :o But yeah as someone who read the book before watching the movie, I thought it was weird they didn't include how animals were super important in the world as a sign of empathy and showing empathy was a status symbol.
Yes, I would love to talk more about this! I have a bunch of incomplete thoughts rattling around in my brain about Blade Runner and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, including about the interesting parts of the book that were cut, like Mercerism, the importance of animals, the empathy boxes, the emotion dialing machines, the spider scene, the other police department, the use and non-use of the empathy test, the fact that multiple androids can share the same face, and the narrative/story treatment of Rachel. I'd like to organize and share my thoughts with other people, but first: I need to watch Blade Runner 2049 because I've heard it's got things for me to analyze, compare, and contrast with the original film and the novel; then I need to decide how many versions of the original film I need to watch and analyze (so far I've only seen The Final Cut, which seems to be the version most people like and recommend, but I think that having Deckard narrate sections could change the worldbuilding and potentially add roboticism that I felt was lacking in The Final Cut); then I probably need to spend some time piecing my ideas together into something coherent that other people can read and understand, but then I'd love to publish my thoughts (probably as an essay on Wordpress, though maybe something a bit more informal) and let people read it and have a conversation about it.
How long will that take? I don't really know. My Frozen essay took four months; DADoES + BR + BR 2049 might take longer because there's more material to analyze. But by asking for my thoughts, you've somehow given me the motivation and inspiration to actually write something about this. (So, thank you for that :).) I'd also like to try to share some of my progress, thoughts, realizations, and questions as they happen on Tumblr, because I'm interested in doing media analysis with other people (and because that might reduce the risk of me losing motivation while working on this), so I may end up rebranding my blog a bit at some point.
Here are some other media analysis/writing things that I'd like to do some day. It turns out that other people asking what my thoughts are on a thing is a really good motivator for me to write down what my thoughts are on a thing, so if anyone wants to encourage me to write an essay or blog post about any parts of any of the following topics, feel free to send me an ask:
Wicked (the musical). One angle I'd like to explore is looking at the musical through an aromantic lens, and reading Elphaba as alloaro/alloaro-aligned. I might broaden the scope to look at other Wizard-of-Oz media, and maybe also aro-aligned villains and aro-aligned anti-heros in media, but maybe that would be better served as a series of essays/blog posts and not an essay so long it should be a book. There's also so much musical/motivic analysis I need to do of Wicked, it has so much depth and I still find more things when I relisten to the music.
The portrayal of robots in fiction. One angle I'd like to explore is, "why are robots and aromanticism linked?" And I'm not happy with the shallow answer of "robots don't have emotions and people think aromantic means you don't have emotions"; I want to actually know "why are robots and aromanticism linked? How did the portrayal of robots evolve for there to be a link? Was that inevitable, or could robots have turned out differently so that they weren't liked to aromanticism? What does the linking of robots and aromanticism say about society and fictional depictions of humanity and lack thereof?" I also need to rewatch and actually finish Battlestar Galactica, though I think that might be more interesting through an ace lens than an aro lens.
Isaac Asimov's fiction and related works. I've been reading a lot of his fiction in publishing order in part because of my interest in the origin of robots and aromanticism, but there's definitely interesting things to be said about his novels and short stories, and also the Foundation TV series, such as how they treat love. (I also want an excuse to rewatch all the episodes just to answer nerdy music theory questions about Demerzel and does she have two musical motifs and why is one very legato and lilting and the other is staccato and halting and is that representing an inner struggle between her humanity and her roboticism?)
An analysis of @kernsing's aromantic sonnet #1 (this is still on my todo list, I got busy but didn't forget, but I have Things to say and I want to Find even More Things to say about this poem)
"Why Beauty and the Beast (1991) is fundamentally arophobic and can't be fixed." Okay, I haven't thought about this in a while so it's possible my perspective has changed and I'll find a way that the story could be changed to not be arophobic, but I know that the conclusion I came to a while ago was that the story structure itself was fundamentally problematic and that changing it enough to make it no longer be arophobic would require changing the story structure so much that it would be a fundamentally different story. This would not exactly be a fun essay to read or write, because I can't imagine many people enjoy someone digging into why a movie so many people love is arophobic to its core, but I'd still like to do it, some day.
Is "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" a distant relative of "Beauty and the Beast"? (I mean the story structure, not genetics/family trees.)
An analysis of Walt Disney Animation Studios films over the years. After my Frozen essay I spent like a month watching almost every Walt Disney Animation Studios film and tracking how the films treated a bunch of different aspects (e.g. sex, romance, marriage, third wheel, kissing, jealousy, love, true love, meet-cutes, queerness, gender, sexism, transmisogyny, homophobia, multiple concrete aspects of amatonormativity, queercoding). But I never really tabulated or aggregated my notes.
The discarded best friend trope (this is an arophobic trope I noticed and came up with a name for), and some examples and subversions of it.
Why does High School Musical (and HSM 2 and HSM 3) lack romantic love songs despite being a loose retelling of Romeo and Juliet that allegedly preserves the central romance? What are the queer things that can be found in the movies? What would I do if I could remake it as a multi-season TV show that was overflowing with explicit queerness that touched on things that weren't shown in the movies? Can I be normal about Kelsi? (I absolutely can't)
Why does Heartstopper (the TV show) make me read Tao as aro all the time?
Fairy tales! What is a fairy tale? Fairy tales through an aro lens! Do fairy tales have a distinct musical sound/style/identity? Has the musical sound of fairy tales changed over time?
Why do stories typically have room for a heroic love interest, but not a villainous love interest? (I'm not happy with the shallow answer of "because of amatonormativity/arophobia". I want to know, why are stories like this? Does it have to do with the structure and pacing of stories? How do pure narrative reasons interact with societal forces and expectations?)
"Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games has always felt aspec to me, and here's why." The last time I read through the trilogy, I felt she came across as demi I think? It might be interesting to compare the books to the movies and look at what and how the adaptation changes, especially with regards to romance, relationships, and aspec coding.
Something about how you can have in depth discussions about aspec politics without using aspec terminology, and maybe using too much aspec terminology makes conversations in the aspec community less accessible to new aspecs as well as well-meaning and open-minded allos who would be better allies to us if they could more easily understand what we talk about. When it comes to things like amatonormativity and allonormativity and the societal norms and issues we face, the more people who understand us and agree with us, the easier it'll be to shift society to be better for aspecs. So, sometimes it makes sense to try to talk about complicated, in-depth aspec issues using as little specialized terminology as possible.
Something something aro Celeste. A while ago a friend joked that I should do an aro analysis of Celeste, and then I started actually thinking about it and saying words and they realized they'd made a mistake, but I never wrote down any of the thoughts I had. Just brainstorming here, but there's probably something I could say about Crystal Hearts as collectibles that gate access to more difficult content and have three different art styles depending on where they appear and how they push you away unless you dash into them and break them and how you can die after collecting a Crystal Heart, Madeline's ex, Madeline and Theo's friendship and Grannie and Theo's grandfather's friendship, Madeline and Badeline's story arc through a "Show Yourself"-like aro lens, and Theo's instagram photos of Madeline doing archery. (This essay would be more on the silly side of things, basically proving that given enough disparate pieces in media I can cobble them together with thumbtacks and red string to make shapes that don't exist. And yes, I came up with the brainstorming list in about 5 minutes off the cuff while writing this bullet point)
An aro reading of Homestuck. I would need to finish Homestuck first, and I'm going to start from the beginning at...some point. I remember really liking and getting excited by the "troll QPRs", and I'm probably going to get nerd-sniped by trying to build my own understanding of how leprechaun romance can make sense. (Yes, I know this might be another thumbtacks and red string essay. No spoilers please)
Something about Gravity Falls, The Owl House, She-Ra, Steven Universe, or other similar TV shows?
Tron and Tron: Legacy? Idk I rewatched them semi recently, and expected to dislike the sequel because I had been listening to the album totally wrong. But then I disliked the original and liked the sequel a lot. There's potentially a music theory lens here, but I'm not sure if there's a queer lens here. But that's okay, maybe someone will suggest one, or maybe I'll just write up my thoughts even though there isn't any queerness to speak of, because my media analysis doesn't always have to be through a queer lens.
Something else that I haven't listed here because I don't have an actual list of things anywhere and I've probably forgotten multiple things?
Something I haven't thought of? If you want to know my thoughts on something or want me to analyze something, feel free to send an ask or a reblog or something. No promises I'll answer in a timely fashion (or ever), but I might
#... this was supposed to be a short answer.#anyways i've been wanting to sort-of rebrand my blog for a bit and more frequent casual posting about media analysis seems appealing to me.#so thank you for the ask and motivation to want to write things.#feel free to treat this list as a menu and order off of it; just be aware that your order may arrive in four-to-never months lol.#aro#aromantic#media analysis#queer#lgbtq#original#ask

Aromantic arrows! You can get these in absolutely any aro flag, not just the ones shown here. I love my custom options. Although these have been popular for me partially because I have the aro allo one as a listed option and there's not enough aro allo merch (and hey! This one is even made by an actual aro allo!)
Anyway, I know my community. You already want an aromantic arrow thing anyway. I don't have to sell you on this. Pins are $10.00 each and earrings are $18 a pair, and shipping to literally anywhere is free.

Cruel Aro / Mean Aro
For Aros / Aromantics / Arospecs who reclaim the stereotype that they are "cruel" or "mean" for being Aro, particularly for not reciprocating unwanted feelings / crushes / advances from others and for turning others down ( or "not giving them a chance". )
This is intentionally broad, as unfortunately the stereotype is put on us for a myriad of reasons. From partnering Aros being labeled as such for "denying" their Allo partners "true love" or "trapping" them ( even if said partner is perfectly happy in the relationship ) to Arophobes claiming that Aros ( especially Alloaros ) are "cruel" for wanting sex or physical affection without romance.
If you're Aro and you feel comfortable reclaiming this stereotype than please feel empowered to use the term(s) and flag(s)! I will not gatekeep them, I made it to feel better about my own experiences and if you need a similar comfort than you're welcome here!
I would ask that everyone be respectful of ALL Aros and our differing experiences though! There is no "right" or "wrong" way to use / reclaim this, just as there is no singular "true" Aro experience.
( This may overlap with other similar terms such as Evil Aro, Heartless Aro, and others. Please keep in mind that not everyone who is comfortable with this may be comfortable reclaiming or using those specific terms / flag(s), and vice versa! )
The "demon" symbol represents how Aros are vilified by Arophobes but is completely optional. It's a modified, colored-in version of the "Devil" icon/emoji created by Vecteezy dot com user iyikon / Muhammad Khaleeq. I don't claim to have made it!
Here are two different versions with the symbol in the top left corner, and a plain flag for those who'd prefer it or would want to place the symbol themselves ( or use an alternate Aro symbol! ) High-quality versions of everything here can be found on my Deviantart ( isobug ) if these are too low-quality.
The format of the flag is inspired by the Loveless Aro and Heartless Aro flags ( abet with the inside stripes being slightly different for contrast reasons ) as my personal reclamation of being labeled as "Cruel / Mean" was inspired by those terms. The colors are from my personal associations with the term(s)!
Taglist - @radiomogai, @revenant-coining

my hemera & carrie
idk if bpd has a symbol but they both have bpd & HATE EACHOTHER IMMENSELY.... they do forgive eachother after the hospital but that hasnt happened yet so for now theyre doomed to hurl playground insults at eachother
ive let butch carrie sizzle in my mind for a bit. bc imma be honest their butchness is NOT REPRESENTED AT ALL!!!!!!!! not even poorly represented its just not there at all. so i took some creative liberties, so theyre a butch enby on t now & alternate between the names crimson/caroline. oh i also made them mspec to make carruni (pre-uni coming out) slightly less iffy & confusing
i wanted to lean into how theyre kinda opposites too, given their color schemes & rivaling eachother, so i made hemera a trans woman & basically fully transitioned minus voice. also enforced hemmy being aroace by making her repulsed🖤i imagine shes like swooned over & she brutally rejects everybody who asks bc thatd be funny imo. sorry for forgetting alloaro carrie hopefully this makes up for it

I don't necessarily think ace specific posts being tagged as aro and showing up in the aro tags is that big of a deal. Is it annoying? Yes. Does it make it harder for aros to find members of their own community? Yes. Does it make it harder for questioning aros to figure themselves out due to not being able to find relatable experiences? Yes.
I think most of the cases are people who are ignorant on the differences and assume that they're the same. This is problematic, but I think it's really just a symptom of a larger issue.
Alternatively, there's also aroaces who are just tagging their posts about their own experiences with their own identities and I don't necessarily think that specific scenario is problematic. But I think if it was just this happening then it wouldn't be as common as it currently is and the aro tags wouldn't be completely flooded with ace content.
The real issue with mistagging, in my opinion, is when people tag other people's aro posts as ace. I could make a post that is so explicitly about being alloaro and there's always always at least one person who tags it as ace/aroace/alloace. This isn't just annoying it's violating.
When we talk about our experiences other people force the asexual label on us. It doesn't matter how much we tell people we're not asexual, people insist on making us be.
Non-ace aros are constantly told that we're not allowed to have our own unique experiences, we're not allowed to have our own communities and labels. Everything is taken. Our spaces are invaded. Our labels and symbols are co-opted and changed for use by asexuals. Our experiences are forced under the asexual label.
Every time we speak about ourselves the response is always "how can we make it about being asexual?" And it's fucking frustrating

A list of emojis that are aro to me:
🫀 - anatomical heart. using this as a substitute for other heart emojis is pretty aro tbh
♠︎/♠️- spade. more of an aroace symbol than a general aro symbol (because of the ace card suit symbolism). i mostly use it because i like the way it looks aesthetically tbh but it also is a pretty significant symbol for aroaces
🏹 - bow and arrow. need i say more?
⬅️⤵️↗️ - literally any arrow emoji. because ar(r)o(w)
🥒 - cucumber. looks like zucchini. zucchini = slang term for a partner in a queerplatonic relationship
🥀 - wilted rose. because red roses represent romance, and romance is dead (i killed it myself)
💐- bouquet of roses. this one is a bit aro because it contains yellow roses, which are aromantic culture.
🌻 - sunflower. i just think yellow flowers (yellow roses especially, but also just yellow flowers in general) are aro
💚 - green heart. it is green. that is aro.
🍍- pineapple. since pineapples are an alloaro symbol.
🍏 - green apple. for apl-spec aros because green is aro and apples are apl
🫁 - lungs. as a cold, loveless aro, i have no heart to wax poetic about as alloromantic people often get to do. because of this, i have chosen the lungs to be the internal organ that i glamorize. it just makes me feel included
💘 - heart with arrow. it has an arrow in it, which is enough for me tbh.
#aro#aromantic#aro culture#aro symbols#this is mostly just to explain why i use a lot of these#but like. if any of y’all want to start using these please do. i think it’d be fun.

Each image is available in two versions with black or transparent background.

Patches include pineapples, dragons, hearts, rainbows, square and zigzag flags, arrows and the words "alloaro", "allosexual" and "pride".]
Because my main project for @aggressivelyarospec's Aggressively Arospectacular is all about the aromantic flag, I thought I'd add some yellow and gold to proceedings with a photo of some of the allo-aro cross-stitch patches I've made over the years.
I do have more: these are just the patches I have yet to attach to my backpack and jacket. Is it more fun to sew the patches then it is to sew the patches onto something else? Absolutely!

Cosmicqueer
With symbol (left), Without symbol (right)
Cosmicqueer is a Queer Stance where one is highly opinionated, aka me. Similar to Critinclus and other such terms. I just wanted a term for my beliefs because I saw some stuff that REALLY annoyed me the other night so here we are.
Cosmisqueer is PRO:
Non-traumagenic systems (aka systems of any kind)
Any "contradictory" or complicated queer identity (within reason, such as Turigirls and Lesboys, Cis Nonbinary Woman/Men, Gaybians, Tulipians, AMAB Transmascs, AFAB Transfems, etc.)
Split Attraction Model, such as Mspec Gay, Mspec Lesbian, Alloaro, Alloace, Alloallo Apl, etc. (Essentially inclusive of any non-rose attraction terms such as Alterous, Queerplatonic, Exteramo, Familial, etc., provided one's form of attraction with those is non-normative.)
Aldernic and Altersex
Terms to describe complicated forms of oppression, such as Exorsexism, Treimisia, and Transandromisia. Cosmisqueer also stands to uplift discussions on general transmisia, transmisogyny, homomisia, amisia, etc. (I personally prefer to use the suffix of misia over phobia.)
Neurodivergent, Race, Nonhuman, etc. exclusive genders/orientations/terms
Nonhumans, Otherkin, Alterhumans, etc.
Reclamation of slurs
Informed Self diagnosis
Kink
Objectum, Conceptum
Polyamory, Non-partnering, any non monoamory identity.
Any non-normative being describing oneself as Queer. (Within reason, should only be done if it's an aspect that defines one's identity a decent amount imo.)
Comsicqueer does NOT support:
Radqueer or other similar queer stances
Safequeer
Transid/TransX (Diaracial, Transage, Transabled, etc.)
Pro-Contact or any not anti-contact stance for non-consensual paraphilias (The big 3, and others)
Terms related to the big 3, non-consensual paras, highly dubious concepts. (Minus MAD flags, depending on the nuance of the subject at hand.)
Pro-ship ideology, non-critical fiction stances.
Pro-Incest, Pro-S/H, Pro-ED.
Emojis I'd associate with Cosmicqueer are: ✨☄️🌈. (Sparkles, Comet, Rainbow.)
I already pretty much ID with a couple queer stances, I just wanted a stance where one's Queer, and feels the word Queer can apply to any non-normative identity relating to gender, orientation, presentation, etc. while feeling Queer is inherently connected to the kink community, and can apply to nonhumans, plurals/systems, non-monoamorous beings, etc. as long as their internal identity affects their external expression in any shape and form, being visibly or socially "non-normative." (Within reason, hence the exclusion of actual harmful identities, actions, stances, etc.)
Essentially using the old definition of Queer to cover "strange" and "odd" identity, and blurring the boundaries between the old use of the word Queer, and the current use of it. Essentially I dislike people reducing Queer to just gender identity and sexual orientation, when Queer has always covered much more than that.

So like half the reason I have a tumblr now is because the followers of @aroallo-culture-is were complaining that no one makes aro allo merch, and then I swooped in and said "actually I do" and everyone was very excited. I'm very aro allo, so obviously I need to look out for my people.
@an-aro-without-an-ace proposed pineapples as an aro allo symbol because they match the flag, and I was immediately all in! So I present to you, aro allo pineapple pins and earrings!
The pins are $12.50 USD each, and the earrings are $20 USD per pair. Shipping is free absolutely everywhere. Links are below.

Asking what's the difference between the aro and the ace communities is like asking what's the difference between the gay and the lesbian community.
You'd say they're very different right? But also quite similar and sometimes overlapping.
It's the same energy
You see I can't read the tone you're talking to me in without tone indicators, so I assume you're trying to help me to understand stuff. I asked the question because I'm alloaro and don't know the ace community that well. I know my stuff, like the famous insiders, the ace ring, or the cards as symbols. But I got curious what the community is like if it's any different from the aro community. Like I said, I'm alloaro. And sometimes I read stuff that alloaro people really struggle to find a place even within the aspec community. I read stuff of alloaros who say that they feel unwelcomed in aspec spaces because of their sexual attraction, and that mostly aces won't welcome them. While I completely know that you can't generalize all aces, I wondered if there are any differences between the ace and aro community because I never saw anyone saying that they don't welcome alloaces. It may be because I'm only in the aro community, and maybe alloace people face the same problems of non acceptance in aspec spaces because of alloaros as well, but I don't know. Also the ace community seemed to have so many jokes and insiders and memes and everything. While I don't see this in the aro community that strongly. Do we have insiders? Idk right now. But your ask help me to understand stuff. While the communities have differences, we're very similar due to similar experiences and struggles.
#I just wanted to answer this ask and now I monologued#I'm so sorry#I should learn to keep my answers short#also I wanted to go to sleep half an hour ago#but I wanted to answer the ask and now I'm here#just 7 hours of sleep it is tonight#original post#ask
