While Telemachus was talking about how much he wants to see his father and how he’d fight monsters, even just to get his father back,
Odysseus was about to kill himself.

"it feels like he's almost like lost as a character, that he doesn't quite know his way other than the voices of the crew."
"because perhaps eurylochus is lost, which is why he doesn't have an instrument. but he does find purpose in protecting the crew."
oh okay! i am not okay!

Anyone else an Epic the musical fan? Anyone else watch the livestream tonight? Anyone else get emotional whiplash with yet another Polites reprise? No… just me?
Whenever I think Jorge can’t slip a reprise of Open Arms, just when I’ve finally recovered, I get hit with another. I will be sending you my therapy bill Mr. Jalapeño.

JORGE YOU BETTER NOT.
Odysseus has a habit of looking to Eurylochus for things (see: ‘Eurylochus get the harpoons’ ‘Eurylochus go make sure this island is secure’ and ‘Eurylochus light up six torch-)
Anyways
If Odysseus at some point in Act 2 turns around to ask for something from his second in command and realises he’s not there anymore I’m going to curl up in a ball and cry.

Greek Apologies
I keep hearing people say that Odysseus never apologized properly to Poseidon but in the Greek way he did.
Basically the Greek word that apology is derived from- Apologia means “Speaking in Defense”.
Basically the Greeks would explain why you did what you did while expressing sympathy and remaining respectful.
The reason why Poseidon didn’t accept the apology was because Odysseus permanently crippled Poseidon’s son which was like, a great disgrace for that time period- it would’ve been more honorable to kill Polyphemus.
But anyways- my whole point was that Odysseus DID apologize correctly but due to the disgrace of what Odysseus did, it’s why Poseidon was so angry and said, “This totally could’ve been avoided had you just killed my son.”
This is why Odysseus was quiet when Eurylochus apologized for the wind bag- because he didn’t apologize correctly per the time period, he just said “I’m so sorry, forgive me.” He didn’t give a defense or reasoning, he just begged to be forgiven.

Um EXCUSE ME?
WAS ANYONE GOING TO TELL ME PENELOPE'S VIOLA MOTIF IS PLAYING DURING THAT SCENE IN LOVE IN PARADISE??
In the middle of a mental breakdown, traumatised beyond all belief, drowning in the voices of his dead loved ones, it's PENELOPE'S MOTIF that plays above it all!
... I have no idea if this was the intended meaning, but wow all I can think of now is that the one thing holding him back from joining the voices haunting him was the memory of Penelope. She's still waiting for him. What would she do if he left now?
Omfg I CANT-
AHHHHHH

The Horse and the Infant and I'm Just a Man perfectly sets up Odysseus's character arc (so far).
In The Horse and the Infant, he asks the men
"What do you live for?  What do you try for?  What do you wish for?  What do you fight for?"
and Odysseus answers that he lives for Penelope, he tries for Telemachus, he wishes to go home, and he fights for his family. there's his entire motivation, laid out clearly in the first two minutes of the musical. the 'why' of everything he does.
and how determined is he? what would he do to get home? what wouldn't he do for his family?
we learn that in the next five minutes. he's faced with a baby who, if left alive, will kill Odysseus and his family. Zeus assures him of this, he knows for certain it will happen.
but it's just a boy. Astyanax is a child. Odysseus is a father, Odysseus loves his family and he loves little boys. he begs Zeus for an alternative, any alternative. his first idea is to raise Astyanax himself! he doesn't want to hurt the baby. he'd rather die than hurt the baby ("I'd rather bleed for you"). but, Zeus promises him, this is the only way.
Odysseus holds Asyanax. he sings to him. he thinks of his family. he cries.
then he kills him.
Odysseus will do anything for his family. he will do whatever it takes to go home. he doesn't want to. he wants to be kind. he wants to greet the world with open arms. he wants to have mercy. his choices haunt him.
but, even if it means going back haunted and changed, he is going home

“Use your wit and try to tell me I’m crazy and mad.” -Eurylochus in Mutiny
So, fun fact about this lyric! Odysseus’ great grandpa is Hermes, making Odysseus 1/8th god.
Hermes is the god of many things, but one of those things is Wit. So, Eurylochus was literally telling Odysseus to use whatever powers he inherited from Hermes and manipulate him.
Just a random thought I realized.

I’m screeching, had a lack of sleep epiphany and went to re-watch Jorge explanation of the gods powers in Epic and guys…
POSEIDON IS WEAK TO CLOSE RANGE ATTACKS!!!!! Odysseus won by getting to attack close range when Poseidon wasn’t expecting it and Jorge had already told us about it!!!!!!
