i really like the dichotomy of everyone respecting Nana as their friend off stage (and the darker feeling she has that they All take from her in one way or another except Karen) but inside the stage duels as performers with her as their ultimate test, they're all still prideful enough to treat it as every man's glory for themselves, making it so they can't hold a grudge against Nana outside the Revues because to everyone the Revues are Just Business and a space for words that don't belong outside it- which plays into the repression that's hurting all their relationships, they really thought of everything making this series

Recently saw a post in the Adam Taurus tag (an exercise in patience, that tag) that claimed that the signs of Adam not actually caring for the Faunus cause start as early as the Black Trailer. Their evidence?

It would undoubtedly suck to be one of those guys if Adam had succeeded, but it's not the unbridled massacre people seem to think it is

As for the Faunus angle, I highly doubt any slave would be given the skills of either of those positions, much less left in charge of who knows how much lien's worth of name brand products, so no danger of accidentally eliminating the unfortunate kin there. Had they been Faunus that did join the SDC of their own volition, then they's be SOL just like the humans

I'm thinking about the first arc of The White Vault again, and how my absolute FAVORITE aspect of the horror is so subtle you don't even realize it at first but once you do - even if nothing bad has kicked off yet - you're still anxious.

The story is told from the stuff left behind at the base! Their journals and notes and audio and video logs and the Documentarian doesn't know EXACTLY where they all fit together on the timeline. THEY'RE NOT THERE TO TELL ANY PART OF THEIR STORY OR CLARIFY ANYTHING.

It's the fact that you already KNOW none of them survive. You know that whatever happened was so bad that there were no survivors. And it lends a whole other aspect to the horror of listening to these people try to plan and survive what's going on while the entire time you KNOW it doesn't work. You know they fail. And that's horrifying.

They're already dead by the first episode! They're sitting there joking and drinking and complaining about the coffee while you're listening in knowing they're all dead and the only thing you can do is listen to their story slowly be pieced together to try to figure out HOW they died. You can't do anything to help! You know they don't make it home but they don't! Even when stuff starts going sideways and there's already a body count and they're still trying desperately to survive and you have to sit there with the knowledge that they don't succeed.

The absolute horror that went through me when I realized in like the first or second episode, when nothing was actually going on yet, that they all die because I realized how I was accessing their story? That's a feeling I wish I could replicate. If I could wipe my memory of this podcast JUST to relisten to this first arc blind again I absolutely would.

It's phenomenal. (I may have some complaints about how the story continued past this point but this first arc will keep this as one of my favorite horror podcasts forever.)

tell me you don't know anything about adult fantasy outside of secondhand reviews of game of thrones without telling me. it costs zero dollars to google "queer adult sff books" or "adult fantasy books without sex" or "feminist adult fantasy" or "hopeful adult fantasy". Check the content warnings on storygraph if you have to. Hell go on r/fantasy and search any keywords or questions you want and you'll literally get dozens if not hundreds of results, including lots of things that arent "mainstream". I read like 50 fantasy books last year and less than 10 of them weren't queer in some way, none were "grimdark", and the majority did not have explicit sex scenes.

You can complain about shitty things or things you don't like in adult books or from specific authors without implying that every adult book falls into that and that it's impossible to avoid. Bc once you put even a tiny bit of effort and research in, its pretty easy to get a hang of what books you wanna try, at least from my experience. As long as you don't just grab something randomly off the shelf, you'll be a lot more likely to find things you like. (that's a pretty bad way to pick YA books too, let's be honest)

Just, there's so much variety and a lot of really good stuff out there, you just gotta actually search for what you want before diving in

Something that I have been secretly obsessing over for forever is the idea of a Ben 10 (or general Omnitrix wielder) that goes full superhero and goes and designs secret identities for EVERY transformation, seeing as how though perhaps the wielder themself is from a human perspective disguised behind the face of an alien, well- fairly certain that transformations have their own degree of recognisability themselves-

I mean, from the perspective of a human Omnitrix wielder like Ben or many other characters from canon to original may focus on the visual aspect of recognition, so maybe species with more than one recognisable feature or a completely different set of recognition (vulpimancers may recognise scent and perhaps sound, pyronites may recognise - among sight - heat signature or temperature) are kinda looked over without actually putting their all into studying ‘what makes me recognisable’, but like- in all honesty this is just me rambling about what human masks would fit the Omnitrix translation to certain alien transformations without proving detrimental to any of their abilities.

What kind of mask would a lepidopterran wear, one that conserves confidentiality without detracting from mouth-based protectiles, what about piscciss volann with their biting? What about a mask with a beaded mouth covering, perhaps one with antennae (or lures) of it’s own? What kind of mask that a human can wear be safely used on a pyronite? Give em a flame retardant gas mask, one maybe with an open back just to maintain the flame headed aesthetic.

Can you even mask every transformation? Beyond the Omnitrix sample of arburian pelarota being the very few examples of the newly practically if not extinct species, can you mask a face that rests on the main body? Is recognition of Arburia dictacted in fact by the face of a pelarota or is it determined by shell and (apparently they have hair) fur patterns?

Well, perhaps in that case a superhero outfit is best for the situation!

What superhero mask doesn’t come it with it’s own superhero costume? Well perhaps you could outfit your arburian pelarota transformation with a cloth ‘mask’ that physically acts as the shirt, they do after all have ‘eyeless vision’, all in due part according to their sensory fur (how do you think they see when rolling rolling?). Why not pair our pyronite mask with a firefighter coat, make them seem like a heroic rescuer rather than a TF2 Pyro main, the chunkier and more Fire Force it looks the better. And what about another member or a near extinct species petrosapiens sporting layers of sound absorbing clothing, worn with perhaps a full head mask that also helps insulate from sound as a defense whilst keeping up an optimal level of anonymity.

Masks with bells, give them to aliens that recognise with sound. Masks with real flowers, give them to aliens that recognise with scent. Put a mask in the fridge or let it sit in the sun, give it to an alien that recognises temperature.

What degree does body shape affect alien recognition, how different do you want to make the body look, how does your superhero outfit work to perhaps benefit your transformation.

How do you mask an opticoid? Give them a lacy mask/shirt, they don’t give a shit about chest nudity! How do you costume a gourmand? Give them a jacket they can zip right open, maybe just straight up sleeves with extra material that MIMICS a jacket! How about a loboan? Give them a long-nosed eye mask, it doesn’t need to cover the mouth so long as it covers the top of the snout!

At work they seem to think I'm an electrical engineer. I'm just. Just so baffled by this. If there's one thing I'm not, surely it's that.

Like, ok, the mechanical engineers think I'm a mechanical engineer, and that's fine. The bosses think everyone is a mechanical engineer, or can be, given half a chance. They think the actual mechanical engineers--the ones with masters degrees in mechanical engineering--are simply the most experienced, but that anyone else could do their job slightly worse but basically successfully. But the mechanical engineers treat me like I'm one of them in a way they don't with other physicists, trust me with tools that they wouldn't trust others with, one of them even gave me admin privileges to some equipment that they won't give my supervisor admin privileges to. Apparently they thought I was going to be working 3/4 time as a physicist and 1/4 time as a laser engineer when I was hired; my previous employer killed that possibility (the one real concession he got with his threatened lawsuit was that I'm not allowed to work on the insides of any lasers for two years) but that's still how they think of me, as basically one of them. But that's just the mechanical engineers who see me that way.

When I applied I said I had mechanical engineering experience and software experience. I hate software, but you've gotta put that in your resume, if you can do it even a little bit. My supervisor remembered that and took it seriously, and I do actually do some software engineering when I have to, but the bosses mainly don't want me working on software.

But somehow the bosses think I'm an electrical engineer, instead. That I should be a major bridge between the electrical engineering department and physics. That that's my rare expertise rather than (in my opinion) my most embarrassing incompetence, the one thing I try to avoid having come up in job interviews because I can't find a positive spin for it.

I mean. It's kind of good, because the company president sees himself as being an electrical engineer as well as a physicist. So he's like, oh, we have this extra competency in common! And it's also kind of good that the skillset that I'm the least secure about, other people have convinced themselves that I'm good at--although I think that's partly because they haven't really asked that much of me, and partly because I know a bit about rf/mw. But, like, I can barely design an inverting amplifier or a low pass filter and then put it together with large components from a kit (although it'll look reasonably nice if I do, because my soldering is decent). And I've only actually laid out a PCB for manufacturing exactly once in my entire life. But it's, idk, weird. I rarely get anything that looks like imposture syndrome, but I can feel it creeping in a little bit here. (Except, of course, it's justified.)
