So was Black Vulcan a real obscure superhero, or just someone that the guys behind that old Superfriends cartoon made up because Black Lightning wouldn't allow them to use his likeness?

Black Vulcan isn't a real person and despite what I'm sure were the best of intentions of the people creating him, the story behind his existence is liable to make you mad.

(A model sheets of Black Vulcan from the "Challenge of the Superfriends" cartoon) The Superfriends Cartoon, despite not being well remembered, was actually sanctioned by the Justice League in a 50/50 split with Hanna Barbera with the League's 50% profit being given to charitable foundations. The League does this all the god damn time through what's called the Watchtower Foundation. If you own a piece of League merch, it's probably official and its profit probably went at least half to charity. The Watchtower Foundation also does really cool stuff like making sure all of its merchandise is made with adult labor via living wages, which makes things feel nicer. In the creation of the Superfriends, Hanna Barbera wanted to diversify the cast they had been given to create heroes of African American, Native American, Asian and Latin American heritage. Creating the false hero "Black Vulcan" to fill that role. Now you may ask why the obvious candidate for that role, IE, Metropolis' own Black Lightning wasn't chosen. There's an excuse reason and a real one. The excuse reason is that Black Lightning wasn't a member of the League in any official capacity for several years yet and Hanna Barbera wasn't confident in their ability to secure "rights" to the man's likeness (while superhero identities are uncopyrightable under the law, should that hero have no public identity to claim it, its generally understood that doing unofficial business in a superhero's likeness is a good way to piss off the community). The real reason was discovered years after the show's production during the company's acquisition by Warner Bros. Namely a note was made by Hanna Barbera's upper management that Black Lightning was "too radical" a figure for a Saturday morning TV show. IE, Black Lightning is a famously empowered figure who fights on behalf of black causes and black communities to the point of often being used as a strawman by fearmongers and racebaiters and it was feared the his inclusion would be "Too political" Basically they wanted to have the points for black representation without having to stand behind an actually antiracist message.

Kara: In the bedroom, changing shirt. She'll come out soon. Have a seat, I'll go take out the food.

Y/n sees Lena and taps on her arm to acknowledge her presence: Hi, Lena.

Lena turns around: Hi cupcakes! Happy new year!

Y/n, hugs Lena from behind: Happy new year to you too. Muah! *y/n kisses her cheek.

Alex: Why did she get a kiss and we don't?

Kara: Yeah, we're your sister.

Y/n: Because she gave me awesome presents!

Kara: And we don't?

Alex: Okay, no more school holiday in National City. You're staying with mom.

Y/n: Alex no... no... Please..

Kara: Alex..

Alex: What?

Kara: She's our sister.

Alex: Are you sure she's not Lena's? I mean, look at them snuggling.

Lena just laughs: It's okay Y/n, if Alex kicks you out, you are more than welcome to stay with me. And I'll take you to the National Science Center.

Kara: Lena..

Y/n hugs Lena: Thank you Lena. You're my favorite.

Kara: Heyyy...

Y/n: Come on Kara, you know you're my favorite Kryptonian sister.

Alex: She is your one and only Kryptonian sister you ever have!

Kara: Alex, don't be so hard on yourself. You're her favorite too.

Alex: Am I?

Y/n: Are you kicking me out?

Alex: No! Are you crazy? Mom will shoot me with her gun!

Y/n, smile: Okay! Then I like you too!

Alex: Of course you do. I changed your diaper Y/n! And you poop a lot!

Finally updated!

I took December to rest because finishing Shattered exhausted me, I had bad flare-ups, and holidays are always so very hard for me. But I am determined to finish this fic too.

AO3 is being very slow for me tonight, so hopefully that fixes itself by morning?

EXCERPT:

The cave weeps and its moisture clings to her like webs. Far ahead a pulsing red light illuminates the rugged outlines of ribbed rock, while darkness and mist encroaches upon her feet. The stalactites and stalagmites both reach toward one another like desperate lovers who are destined to be kept apart by time. 

During the fight, she hadn’t meant to fall into the cavernous maw by the remains of the Art Center, and yet, here she walks. The tunnel she follows bisects this cave far under the city. Actually, no, she’s pretty sure she’s not under the city anymore. Maybe in the mountains? Surely not under the ocean. More water would leak through crevices, the pressure splintering the rock.

Her enemy has faded into the darkness with an irritating taunt. “Seek the screaming stone and understand the truth. Or die. Whichever you prefer.” 

Dying isn’t an option. She needs to return to Lena, but she can’t yet. Perhaps she can get a signal to her instead. Help her love find her, so that the team may come with improved firepower. She suspects her love is hard at work even now examining the fight and fixing where they went wrong.

In the meantime, she must seek the truth, but what does her enemy mean by the screaming stone? She ought to know what that is.

She parses through her memories, but gaps exist. A few segments of the trip to Ireland refuse her attempts at recall, while memories of her childhood on Krypton and her years with Alex ring clearer and closer than recent months. She feels disjointed, like part of her has split away, and worse, a growing anger coils in her gut. 

Where did they get Harun-el? She knows Lena had some as did the DEO. Has the False Court infiltrated even the DEO? What of L-Corp? How dare they threaten her Lena. Fury sizzles through her veins. How dare they come so close to her family.

She wants to rip apart these caverns. Make those men bleed for harming Lena, her family, and her adopted planet. These urges threaten to overtake her rational thought, and it frightens her. The more she dwells in the anger, the more violet sparks dance between her fingers.

She will find them. 

She will destroy them. 

She will end their injustice once and for all.

A trail of purple-gold lightning sparks in her wake.
