R. Murray Schafer (1933-2021)
Tumblr media

I fucking hate living as me tbh I have a shitty fucking left eye that’s going blind at this point because it wasn’t treated enough as a kid and now due to lack of treatment ITS GOING BLIND. I have 2 PDs and traits from overlapping cluster Bs (Aspd) but not enough for a actual diagnosis of that just traits. But my two full personality disorders are BPD and STPD I can’t go outside most days because I’m terrified people are stalking me, reading my mind and tracking and following me. I can barely talk to people without anxiety and paranoia that there out to get me. I can’t date cuz the BPD just makes it impossible to date me atp, I have DID symptoms to which is just wonderful why would anyone wanna date me when I can’t even have sex with someone without dissociating or freezing up during it who wants to deal with that I don’t offer much so my body is the only option. Like a used up sex doll. I’m DISGUSTING, even my parents hate me which why wouldn’t they. There the ones who abused me and gave me all this shit so why tf wouldn’t they. I feel like a mistake, a leech, a burden, a curse, a shameful stain and a fake “human” walking around with a otherworldly mind in the bad way. I’m a weird abused kid who never learned how to adapt

week 1: sound, noise, music, sound art
Tumblr media
Schizophonia: the split between an original sound and its electroacoustic reproduction
Electro-acoustic: any process involving the transfer of a signal from acoustic to electrical form or vice versa.
Psychogeography: the effect of geographical location on the emotions and behaviour of individuals
Artists to look at:
R Murray Shafer
John Cage
Annea Lockwood 10 minute listening exercise
On my left, the window was open, so i could hear birds, the distant sound of cars, planes flying overhead, shouting from the nearby football field. I could also hear and feel the sound of wind going through the trees, the windows and my hair.
Behind me, I could hear shuffling and shifting, sometimes sniffling or clicking noises coming from objects being interacted with.
To my right, the door to the corridors was open and I could hear people walking past, the fading in and out of music, yelling and loud voices reverberating through the building. I could hear the clock, and sometimes the door shuddering against the wall from the wind.
I was more partial to the sounds coming from my left. I preferred the natural noises of the wind and birds over the louder voices coming from outside the door to my right. However, I liked the upbeat music that echoed through the corridors. The sound of the distant traffic and planes flying were neutral to me, almost like white noise.
I currently have a bit of a cold/cough right now and I was doing my best to hold in my coughs, not wanting them to be written down and immortalised in people's notes or minds. And I especially did not want people to label my coughs as annoying, ugly, or disturbing.
The ten minutes felt long sometimes and short other times. I could hear my own body making noises, as I bounced my leg, and swallowed, and I could hear the sound of pops or crackling in my head as I held back yawns.

Reading Personification by Steven Connor
Quotes:
In such a world, the discontinuity of insides and outsides is ecstatically, anxiously dissolved. And in such a world sound, with its capacity to permeate the membranes separating discrete beings and bodies and to move from inside to outside and from outside to inside, becomes the representative sense-modality.
Erik Bünger is preoccupied throughout his work with such passages of sounds, musics, and vocalities between inside and outside.
The inside and the outside of what? For it seems that we are no longer located unilaterally on the inside of things, receiving sounds that come to us from an outside; rather, as the self-overhearing voice in Samuel Beckett’ s The Unnamable says, we are in the position of the diaphragm, the tenuous thickness that vibrates between the inside and outside: (SAMUEL BECKET ABSURDIST THEATRE)
Michel Serres has frequently evoked what he calls the “black box” of hearing, which takes raw sound and processes it into signal, voice, melody, turning “hard” form into “soft” information. (BLACK BOX WHITE BOX)
You become a person through sound, the word seems to say, through the sound that passes through you, circulating between the three grammatical persons that every person comprises—first, second, and third—pluralizing its singularity. We are persons because we are sonified, we are personifications of the sounds that we absorb and exude. Ego is echo, personhood is resonance, the resounding of the persona: ‘personance,’ held together by a sort of persistence of hearing equivalent to the cinematic persistence of vision. (INTERNET SPACE AS ECHO CHAMBER AS EVERYTHING)
In his more recent works A Lecture on Schizophonia, 2007 – 09 (figs. 03–04 ) and The Third Man, 2010 (figs. 01 – 02 ) Erik Bünger has reinvented a genre that flourished in the eighteenth-century theater: the lecture-performance. One of the most successful of these was George Stevens’s Lecture On Heads, which used a series of busts of historical figures to develop some meditations upon the idea of character. (The lecture performance)

authority in performance, the authorial voice
absurdity in treating such a benign and ridiculous subject with such severity
The virus of language
Concerning itself with the ‘thirdness’ of our media, Bünger’s lecture must itself occupy this tertiary position, this middle ground.
mediator between reality and constructed fiction of the phenomena of chair porn
A growing preoccupation through Erik Bünger’s work is the force of what might be called preoccupation itself; that is, the ways in which we are all of us inhabited in advance by the cadences and rhythms of the media, always already in place alongside us, before us, within us, nagging, niggling, jingling
The Third Man is an anatomy of the condition of obsession, in which we are all besieged by voices, hints, solicitations, floating fragments of desire and affect; all seeking to take root, to find a space of interiority in which to resound and prolong themselves. But an effect of iteration or citationality is added to the lecture in performance, in which the subordinate relation in which Bünger stands to his own text as it reads itself or plays itself out through his performance of it rhymes with the obsessional theme of the lecture itself, namely the way in which we are read, ghosted, or reeled off by the ubiquitous soundtracks of modern media. We are induced to wonder: is it possible to speak of such a condition of obsession non-obsessively? Is the diagnosis of the paranoid condition always in part a confirmatory symptom of it?
If we are fated never again to be fully alive, fully present to ourselves and each other in the mythical region of the here and now, this may hint at the condition of virtuality towards which human beings have been tending since they first began to provide an auditorium for the resoundings of personification, which is perhaps to say, since they first heard the whispers of what it would be to be human.

Dirges of the Damned
I
It was an Age of Schizophonia A time of total Self-conceit
In Those Times Sociopathy was the highest ethos And empathy its accessibility tool
In That Age Wealth went to the Ruthless For the Doctors: death on Death Fewer to staunch the bleeding hearts Every day, a taller hoard Every quarter for the All-Hungry
It was an Age Around two thousand years Before or after Christ

Schizophonia - examples
The term Schizophonia (schizo-split and phone-sound) was first coined by the artist R.M Schafer in 1969. It refers to the split between an original sound and the electroacoustic reproduction in a soundscape. For example listening to someone calling a race at a kids swimming carnival over a megaphone, listening to hold music on a phones speaker or when the volume on the car radio is turned up to the maximum level it distorts the sound coming out to an unrecognisable and painful noise assault. I tried to play around by creating my own schizophonic sound and channelled Schafer by recording my dog barking at the front door on my phone then played that recording and recorded it on my H5 zoom cam alternating between the two I did this 13 times and below is the first recording versus the final unrecognisable sound.
