Had an interesting encounter
Yesterday I dropped Little Miss at school and headed to The Aldi to pick up a few things before going back home. I got there a bit before they opened and decided to stand around and play Monster Hunter Now on my phone while I waited.
I'm in the deep south. I live in Trump country, if you feel me.
I'm wearing this:
Tumblr media
There's an older, tallish white man, maybe near 80 or so, that I notice looking at me. He glances, looks away, looks again and then he said something I didn't think I'd hear...
"I like your hat. And your shirt. If you ask me, people too worried about other folks rather than just helping people be happy," and he continues, "the Bible says love one another as yourself and that's what we oughtta be doing, loving one another"
When I tell you I was floored and momentarily stunned to silence, I mean it. Then we had a nice chat before the nice ladies opened the doors for us to shop.
So there's good people out there. I wear this stuff to let those who may feel isolated know they have an ally, and those who feel the same as me know they're not alone.

Always an experience watching the leftism leave FNAF fans when someone mentions that Scott Cawthon financially backed fascist politicians.
The switch from posting hardline leftist tweets about boycotts and signal boosts and critical takedowns of politicians and celebrities to ‘ohhh, well. everyone makes mistakes. who can blame him, listen he. he donated money to gay charities too. that makes it ok! a millionaire in his forties is allowed to have political beliefs. does it even matter? just let it go!’ is whiplash inducing. The antivaxxer celebrities have got to go, but this one horror dev who quietly handed wads of cash to antivax lawmakers? He’s chill, he can stay.
The charity thing is so funny too because suddenly utilitarian positive-negative point counting is the way to go. Maybe an abacus would help calculate the net good of donating to the Trevor Project minus donating thousands of dollars to Mitch McConnell and Donald Trump. -10 points if I push a kid in a lake but +11 points if I help an old lady across the street, so I’m chill. You can’t judge me. Hey, maybe. Just don’t push a kid in the lake period. How fucking low is the bar when we’re excusing maxing out the possible dollar amount of donations to Mitch fucking McConnell. That should be like. Default you’re a bad person.

its been 33 years do not forget the atrocities of the western government
Today Iraqis remember the victims of the tragic Al-Amiriyah Shelter bombing. In the early morning of 13 February 1991, United States air forces targeted the Amiriyah shelter in Baghdad with two bunker-busting smart bombs. Although the U.S. claimed the shelter was a military command-and-control center, it was in fact a civilian bomb shelter. No military personnel were present when the bombing occurred. Instead, the bombs instantly killed more than 400 civilians, mostly women, children, and elderly people while they slept.
Soon after the bombing it became clear to all that Al-Amiriyah was not being used by the Iraqi military and had been a civilian shelter for some time. At best, the targeting of this shelter was a colossal intelligence failure by the U.S., which initially tried to defend choosing the shelter as a military target. Otherwise, the deliberate targeting of a civilian shelter would constitute a grave breach of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and a war crime. However, the situation was not fully investigated, and the U.S. was never forced to account for its actions.

I think what a lot of people don't understand is that the cultural and societal aspects of religion can still exist in a society that is 100% secular. Most atheists aren't anti-theists, in fact, most of them still take part in many religious customs and celebrations in a secular form. Anti-theism doesn't even mean the eradication of religion, it's typically used to describe the intellectual opposition to belief in a deity,
So, I'm honestly perplexed whenever I see people arguing that the "end goal" of atheism is to eradicate religion, this is something both religious people and ill-informed atheists believe, for some reason. I guess this is what happens when Christopher Hitchens and Sam Harris are your go-to atheists and you're measuring atheism against the most extreme religious zealots because that's what most people are reactive towards.
What should be completely removed are almost all forms of institutionalized religion and religious power structures. These are the exactual oppressive structures that have used religion as a tool to justify every form of bigotry and crime against humanity. They are also not essential to the practice of the religion or the survival of the religious culture. Your right to practice your religion ends if you're using said religion to advocate for the oppression of Muslims (assuming you're not practicing Islam), atheists, LGBT+ people, and other minorities. You can be a church-going Catholic without advocating for state-sanctioned religion or the rights of others being removed. This evangelical breed of religious extremism has no place in society and is what actually leads to real genocides happening today.

Being from the global south doesn't give you a pass on stupid fucking takes actually. I can sympathize with your position, which I will never understand, and still point out you're a fucking moron if you believe that America's foreign policy could not possibly get worse. I know a lot of you who say this shit think that asking you to care about the lives of people in the US is too much, so I will at least ask you to consider what might happen under a fascist strongman who picked a neoreactionary as his VP with even more political backing than the first time he was elected.

They literally cut off the power so the world wouldn’t see the genocide they are about to commit…fully backed by the US government meanwhile said government also does nothing to the people who continue to get killed by the regular mass shootings

“Never Again”
The first picture is from a book burning in Germany, 1933, that targeted “un-German” literature including works that championed social progress, improved working conditions, women’s rights, LGBTQ culture, and science that contradicted German cultural beliefs (among other topics). The second is from 2022 in Tennessee, where similar topics were targeted for being “un-Christian” and “un-American.”“Never again” is happening right now. If folks in the American social majority don’t familiarize themselves with this history, how these movements work, and reject it, then it will play out just as it did last time.

Not once in the history of ever did a young child find his father’s books and accidentally killed his sister.  Yet they’re banning books.

Trying to explain to someone why I, someone with a uterus, deserves basic human rights when all they focus on is pissing on the poor.
