People know that Disney ripped off Barbie as rapunzel for their version but people don’t know that they also ripped off a comic called rapunzel’s revenge for their movie as well.
In the comic:
Rapunzel’s love interest is a thief
Rapunzel uses her hair as a lasso.
Gothel has a connection to the plant
Rapunzel leaves the tower early on in the story to go on an adventure.
The only difference here is that there isn’t any of the sexist or ageist shit in the comic. Also, rapunzel is a real character and does things on her own instead of relying on some random creep. Rapunzel in the comic could also fight (heck, she took down an animal using her hair) while Disney couldn’t even defend herself against a powerless woman.

Part Two
I’m very proud of these dolls, and I’m also leaving them at my parents’ house, so I did a little photoshoot with some books as background so I can have nice pictures of them.
This is the second post, so check out the first for more info!
Tumblr media
First up we have Pocahontas (real name Matoaka) with Elatsoe, by Darcie Little Badger. It’s a why-dunnit, not a who-dunnit, about a Lipan Apache girl who has some serious ghost powers. Pocahontas was a tough one, but I decided to go with a book I love about a modern Lipan Apache (Indigenous) girl, written by a modern Lipan Apache (Indigenous) woman. I know a lot of people have strong feelings on both the real life Matoaka and the cartoon Pocahontas, and how she symbolizes a lot of sad and terrible changes for Turtle Island. So I thought putting the doll and this book together would provide an interesting contrast, one that the real life Matoaka may find horribly interesting.
Tumblr media
Second is Esmeralda with At Night All Blood Is Black, by David Diop (the French title means Soul Brother - I believe that the title is a play on the English Idiom, At Night All Cats Are Grey, meaning you cannot see meaningful differences in the right circumstances). It’s a very interesting though sorrowful novel about a Senegalese Tirailleur (Infantryman) who was sent to France during WWI. I don’t think Esmeralda would read this normally, but if she was in a sad mood, I think the theme of fluctuating humanity during conflict, and being a Person of Color in France (even centuries later!) would interest her.
Tumblr media
Third up is Mulan with Lady of Ch’iao Kuo: Warrior of the South, by Laurence Yep. When I drew pictures for Mulan’s poem (years ago now!) I headcanoned in my explanation that Mulan and Lady Xian, princess of the Li Xian people in modern day Guangdong, were close enough in history that they *might* have met and been friendly. Mulan is typically from further North and West than Guangdong, and would be part of the colonizing side in this case sadly, but I feel like they would respect each other as fellow powerful women.
Tumblr media
Fourth is Melody (Ariel’s daughter) with A Song Below Water, by Bethany C. Morrow. I think she’d go into the book with certain expectations, like I did, about the plot, and then get drawn in by the real story. Let’s just say the cover gave me assumptions that lead to a great twist for me personally. Also, I think Melody would relate to the mystery of her magical parent’s true background. The book celebrates the lesser known fantasy species, and approaches the danger of traffic stops, police brutality and protesting for Black people, and how that intersects with being a woman, with care and love. If they ever make a live action Little Mermaid 2, I feel like that would also speak to Melody.
Tumblr media
Fifth is Kida with The Ones We’re Meant To Find, by Joan He. Kida is from a fantasy ancient civilization, and this book depicts a sci-fi futuristic one, but there’s more similarities than one might initially think. Both exist due to the hubris of humanity, and in reaction to serious pollution topside. And both explore (or at least mention) a relationship between two women separated by the change in their civilization, and with a boy who seems to know too much. I’m not sure Kida would necessarily read this story, aside from its attractive and exotic (to her, at least) take on the world above, which she has not seen for millennia, but this story is similar enough to Kida’s movie that I felt it fell under the adaption category instead.
Tumblr media
Sixth is Jane (from Peter Pan 2, Wendy’s daughter) with Peter Pan on Scarlet, by Geraldine McCaughrean. The Disney movie is NOT based on this book, but both do mention Wendy’s family being affected by a World War, though this one has WWI and the movie has WWII. Interestingly, both have a sympathetic Hook initially. ‘Twas a lovely read, and in my opinion matched the original book based on the play.
Tumblr media
Seventh is Giselle with The Wind in the Willow, by Kenneth Grahame. I just felt Giselle would enjoy the idea of cute talking animals (but not so much the war storylines of Redwall) so I put her with this book.
Tumblr media
Eighth is Tiana (<3) with Wildwood Dancing, by Juliet Marillier. Funnily enough, I do actually have the *sequel* to the book her movie was based off of, but I’ve never read the original, so I decided it doesn’t count. But this is my favorite mixed up fairy tale novel that features a Frog Prince storyline, so I went with it. The villain is also a greedy butt who doesn’t care for his own people, and the protagonist is often underestimated, due to her appearance and gender. In any case, I love this book so much that I illustrated the first chapter, lol.
Tumblr media
Ninth is Rapunzel with Rapunzel’s Revenge, by Shannon, Dean and Nathan Hale. I loved this adaption since I was a kid (honestly more than Tangled) and I’m pleased to finally own it.
Tumblr media
Last is Merida, with The Edge on the Sword, by Rebecca Tingle. The book is about a warrior princess a thousand years ago in what is England today, with a forced engagement storyline, so I figured this would be right up Merida’s alley.

You never specified that it had to be superhero comics, and I’m gonna take full advantage of that to hype up three of my favorite non superhero comics, Polly and the Pirates, Rapunzel’s Revenge, and The Last Dragon.
Polly and the Pirates is an independent series set in an alternate history San Francisco, with the titular character Polly Pringle discovering her mother was the legendary Pirate Queen. After being kidnapped by her mother’s old crew to be their new captain, Polly has to uncover her mother’s treasure vault to keep it out of the hands of her mother’s old rival and his son Claudio.
Tumblr media
Rapunzel’s Revenge is a western retelling of the fairy tale Rapunzel, with Rapunzel becoming an outlaw after escaping her tower to take down Gothel. For years Rapunzel had lived as Gothel’s daughter, never knowing she’d been forcibly taken from her real mother, who was one of many people that Gothel had enslaved. Using her hair as lassos, and with newfound outlaw partner Jack at her side, Rapunzel sets out to free her mother and take down Gothel once and for all.
Tumblr media
The Last Dragon is an original fantasy set in a land where dragons were thought to be extinct. When one last dragon begins terrorizing the town of Medd, they seek a hero to save them. Instead, they get Lancot, who looks the part but is terrified, and their own local healer’s daughter Tansy, who only wants to help keep her home and family safe.
Tumblr media
I won’t spoil them for you, but they’re all fantastic and you should check them out if you’re into fun and fantastical stories.
Ok, I'm getting sad thinking about how much comics suck these days, so let's try this. Tell me about the comics and characters you guys love, past or present. Sperg out all you want. Tell me everything you like about them. Gush. Go into detail about your favorite plots and why they're so special to you. Ask me about mine, if you don't feel like talking about yours.
Everything might suck these days, but we don't always need to dwell on it, right?

47. Barbie in the Nutcracker vs Barbie as Rapunzel
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vote in the other polls!
Propaganda:
Barbie in the Nutcracker
My favorite barbie movie!! It was Christmas tradition as a child to watch this movie. When I saw barbie movies in the main tournament I was surprised this one wasn’t here
Barbie as Rapunzel
I love tangled but this will always be my first Rapunzel story. I still think about the hair trickery scene and I love the magic paint brush.

Ayo shoutout to fairytale retellings that are written for actual preteens/young teens, here are some of my favorites;
Note note: These ones specifically are all appropriate for young audiences, say a hyperlexic little girl with ADHD who had The Hunger Games given to her in 3rd grade because her teacher couldn't keep up with her thirst for pages (just a nonspecific lil example :D) so if you're a parent or teacher reading this post I hope this helps!
Land of Stories by Chris Colfer- of course. What's not to love? I mean I lost a little steam in the last book (there's six) but heyyyy the first one can be read alone and then if you want more lore you can keep going if you wanna.
East by Edith Pattou- Ok fine, our main girl is giving a little bit of not-like-other-girls (Purple eyes? really?) but it's such a fun fucking reread, I feel like some of my superstitious things are validated when I do read it. East of the Sun and West of the Moon hasn't been retold to death so this is awesome.
Twice Upon a Time; Rapunzel, the One with All the Hair by Wendy Mass- Mouthful of a title but I STILL think back to this one all the time and laugh. It's short, it's cute, it's funny, they make the prince and Rapunzel into more normal kids, this one is a great light read. The other ones in the series are probably just as good.
Oh yeah forgot to mention these other books are THICK.
Just Ella by Margaret Peterson Haddix- I've been rereading this one since I was small and I still notice new things every time I read it. I'm so mad I marked up my copy because I have a gorgeous one from before they ruined the cover with modern art. If you look it up, I have the one where it's like half peeled back to show Ella as a peasant. Also a skinny book.
Ever After High's book series, mostly written by Shannon Hale- Did y'all know EAH had books when we were younger? Hale is one of my favorite authors, I ate these UP once I got my hands on all of them. Princess Academy was one of my favorites as a kid so finding these when I was like 11-12 was GREAT. They're long enough to keep me busy and super engaging. Ya gotta know- Briar's my favorite character in the books. Closely followed by Cedar.
Hale's Rapunzel's Revenge is SUPER good too. Graphic Novel. I'm a very huge Hale fan.
I can't think of any others right now but if I do I'll reblog and tack them on!

Was going into that Disney card game tag to see if Tiana had gotten any more cards and I ended up seeing a card with rapunzel. It turns out that Disney once again ripped off rapunzel’s revenge design yet again!
In the card, rapunzel had her hair in small braids and they were in holder on her hip like a whip or lasso. Just like rapunzel’s revenge:
Tumblr media
Even after all these years, Disney is still ripping off this comic( and Barbie as rapunzel).
Edit: I forgot to put the picture of the bugged eyed freak copying the one above. Here it is.
