I'm a 3D animator rather than a 2D one, but methinks the information is still relevant! I like to think of it as the trail of breadcrumbs animators will leave behind to easier coordinate with their fellows (Or their future selves, if working alone). Someone responsible for the cinematography & camera work side of things can see an animator's organizational notes and plans, and can use that to accurately set up the cameras within the scene. Inbetweeners like it because then they can accurately fill in the blanks of the motion the key-framer was trying to depict. It'll look a bit different between 2D and 3D but the principle is the same. Even if you're just working solo; that dope sheet will be your organizational Best-Damn-Friend-You-Ever-Had. If you're more of a visual person, These lovely humans explain it in greater technical detail for their individual fields!

i’m in 2D animation at college right now, and my prof keeps talking about the importance of XSheets and how they’re everywhere in the industry, but I’ve literally never seen them before and he’s mentioned they’re kinda getting phased out.

Do animators still use them? If so do you use them personally? Do you have any advice for them because honestly i just write down whatever feels right on the sheet. No idea if Im doing things correctly but I haven’t had issues yet.

I don’t use xsheets for my job as a board artist or director but they’re still really important and used all the time for the actual animators as well as the timers. There are entire jobs built on JUST doing xsheets

I’m glad that’s a skill being taught because the amount of people who can do it is dwindling but it’s still needed
