#RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS ANNUAL 2

Just a reminder that the New52 really did give us the best Jason xmas special with RHATO Annual #2. This story had every thing: little bby outlaws being violent cutie pies, they get grounded by batman. they escape on the t-rex in the batcave and steal santa's sleigh, they find a war in the north pole, Mrs. Claus is a giant gingerbread woman who fights with rolling pins, they beat up possessed rabid reindeer, fake Santa calls Jason a very bad boy. Its like an unhinged fever dream and I love it. Are some lines cringe?? 1000% but I am willing to ignore that.
Also, Jason's narration about Kori being so strong followed by her going feral and saying she'll bite just means a lot to me.

Jaydick and Pragmatic Love
For some reason (*cough* neurodivergence *cough*) I like to get introspective about why I like the things I like. My love for jaydick came kinda naturally – a red/blue aesthetic between 2 dorks with canonically strong and complex feelings towards each other? Been there, done that, sign me up. But, like...why? Why was I obsessed with this ship? Why is the pairing itself so compelling, whether you ship them or not? I thought: "I don't know, it's the way they're coded as opposites but aren't really, and the way Jason admires Dick but also resents him a little, and the way that Dick's entire identity shifts when Jason comes along, I guess."
And digging a little deeper, I could finally put it into words: it's because Jason was made for Dick. In much the same way that Dick (and consequently Robin) was made to be Bruce's ward / Batman's partner, Jason was created to be someone Dick could conceivably pass his mantle to, someone he could see something of himself in and trust to take on the responsibility he'd been safeguarding for years so that he could finally go do something else (i.e. become Nightwing). Metatextually (i.e. between text and audience), this makes sense, especially given the logic that Jason needed to be similar enough to Dick for audiences to like him while being his own person so he wasn't just a shameless ripoff. (This logic evolved over time, hence retcons, but still.) But contextually (within a text, between characters), what must that look like?
If I had to put it in a single word, it seems like both fans and writers have settled on pragma. (EDIT: I like the Wikipedia article better.) According to Greek philosophy-based types of love, pragma is the type of love based on personal qualities, a sense of duty/obligation, and long term commitment. There is compromise and mutual understanding here. It's the type of love most associated with married couples who have been together for a while.
What's awesome about this is it can coexist alongside other types of love, like philia (platonic), eros (lust-driven), or ludos (flirtatious). These secondary types are where I see the disconnect between shippers and antis, but pragma is still the foundation, not necessarily in a romantic way, but certainly in the commitment.
A few examples under the cut.
Nightwing (1996) #119-122. I wrote about this enough, and so has frog. Commitment, sense of duty/obligation
Nightwing (2016) #15. Jason and Dick being bros, and Jason being self aware and commenting on their coping mechanisms (i.e. violence). Long-term mutual understanding.
Red Hood and the Outlaws (2016) Annual #1. stealing this from @the-mocking-robin to make a point. Admiration of personal qualities.
Grayson (vol. 3). This one's just fun. Jason feels betrayed that Dick faked his death.
Nightwing (2021) Annual #1. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Nightwing (1996) Year One #5. Commitment, sense of duty almost immediately.
#jason todd#dick grayson#lit crit#literary analysis#i finally put my thoughts into words#and now it's your problem too#pragma#greek love#jaydick#dickjay#did i just argue that Jason and Dick are married???#sorry antis#i promise i was trying to be inclusive

All right, I'm actually trying to tally this up: what are the actual storylines people can think of that are about Dick and Jason's relationship that feature them on page together? Ones where it's basically just them up against each other or working together, rather than intermixed with a lot of other family (so for instance, I'm not counting things like Tom King's scene announcing Bruce and Selina are engaged, or Batburger).
My immediate round up off the top of my head and a quick scan of appearances consists of:
Nightwing Year One
Jason's 1980s NTT appearances
EDIT: Batman #416
Brothers in Blood - Nightwing #118-122
Climax of Battle for the Cowl
Batman & Robin 2009 #4-6 and #23-25
Red Hood and the Outlaws Annual #2 2017
Blood Brothers - Nightwing Annual 2021
Maybe Joker War? But that's got Babs and Tim around as well
#that's just...really scanty#the thing is they very rarely work together as a team#they fight each other a little more often#but there is not a lot to base their relationship off!

If you haven't figured out why this place is called HYPRFXATN It's because I have adult money and my ADHD makes me have the self control of a herding dog. I bought more comics, but this time most of them are from the Teen Titans '03-'11 run (32 in total). There's also a Red Hood and The Outlaws, Robin Annual #1, the complete Robin III Cry of the Huntress, Batman #456 and year 3 #4, Young Justice #16 and Dark Crisis: Young Justice #2.

Hi
Can you recommend me Bat-family comics to read? Which ones do you like?
Heyyyy
I would love it!
DISCLAIMER Keep it in mind I'm a casual reader so my recs might not be the most "this is every issue they are together" or the longer ones!
Let's go!
Nightwing Annual (2021)
Dick & Jason focused
This is one of my favorites ones, it focuses both on Dick's and Jason's relationship as Nightwing and Robin and Nightwing and Redhood.
The dialogue is great, it has both it's really funny bits but also it's really wholesome ones too and it's full of heartwarming moments.
I absolutely adore the way they handled Jason's Robin and acknowledges his violent tendencies without judging him for it.
He's not portrayed as overly violent and reckless, but as a normal teenager having normal reactions given the things he had to deal in his past.
My only criticism is Jason still using that damn crowbar and how they kept drawing Jason shorter the Nightwing for some reason. I think it was to accentuate the "younger brother" feelings so I forgive the artist.
But it's pretty funny.
He looks like short king
Robin & Batman
Dick and Bruce focused
Oh this one, this one it's so good, so good that almost got me crying on main. It's really beautiful, I wasn't the happiest about how Bruce behaved in the comic but it sat in a fine line between Batdad and Bruce being a terrible father/person.
He is too hard on Robin, but it does show how he is trying.
The art is goddamn beautiful, it has this watercolor look and Dick looks adorable on it.
It also goes deep in Dick's feelings about being Robin and what the whole jig means to him, it respects Dick's relationship with Bruce but without forgetting the love and the moments he had with his biological parents.
It's just really, really beautiful a goddamn gem between the many mistakes DC made with them two over those years.
For Tim and Dick I really recomend
Batman Prodigal (1997)
Note: The whole Kightfell series is great for a Bruce, Dick and Tim read. But for the Batfam feelings you can just focus on the prodigal parts.
Dick & Tim focused
The only thing you have to know to catch up is:
1. Bane broke Bruce's back and dignity, so he couldn't still be Batman.
2. Bruce found this guy called Jean Paul to fill for him.
3. Jean Paul is really fond of punishment and violence and the good ol' catholic guilt and goes a little bit too rogue as Batman for everyone's liking.
4. Bruce takes the mantle from Jean Paul and Nightwing fills in as the new Batman.
I wouldn't call exactly brotherly, because Tim wasn't adopted yet in the timeline this was published but they have their moments.
New talent show case DC #2017
Duke and Jason focused
This is also a favorite. It's a short story (unfortunately) but every single panel is worth it.
It's basically Jason and Duke bonding moment between fighting some baddies and trying to clown each other on the way. 10/10 will always recommend.
Robin War
Jason & Duke & Tim & Damian
This one I've read recently (thanks for the asks people send to me y'all are fucking great) and it's a fucking gem!
It shows a lot their chemistry on the battlefield and how fucking insufferable they are around each other. It also shows how Duke fits as a glove in this family of misfits even before he was an "official member".
Red Hood and the Outlaws Annual (2016)
Another Dick and Jason focused!
Oh this one is a blast! It's also short but so goddamn worth it.
Basically Jason and the Outlaws take a gig in a circus to track a Russian bad guy (gotta love how comic books have unresolved beef with Russians until this day) and well it's a circus so how can you not call Dick Grayson?
It's so goddamn funny and it has no right to be, it still very close in the timeline where Dick and Jason were definitely not in good terms, so their interaction it's all so awkward it's a joy really.
We also got a flashback from Dick and younger Jason as Robin and even the flashback is goddamn hilarious, I had such a good time reading it that it's a must read!
Now If you're here for the angst and general feeling's™
I would highly recomend.
- Nightwing Year One (Dick & Bruce)
- Death in the Family (Jason & Bruce & Dick)
- Red Robin (Tim & Dick / Tim & Damian / minor Tim & Cass / Minor Bruce & Tim)
Note: They don't interact much in this run but when they do it hurts. It also can help you understand the beef between Tim and Damian better.
- DCeased (Damian & Steph / minor Damian & Jason)
Note: It's one of the many, many DC aus but this one it's 'pretty' good (it's decent). Definitely not Batfam focused but it has one one of my favorite Damian & Steph and Damian & Jason moments. It's also one of my favorites interpretations of Damian, he gets so sweet and mature over the years that passes in the comic and his reencounter with Jason rewrote my entirety brain chemistry.
Also unfortunately it's the only time we get to see Damian and Jon growing up together :')
- DC vs Vampires ( Batfam (except Duke because the author is a coward) specially Tim & Damian / Tim & Bruce / Dick & Almost everybody )
Note: Okay this one is a fucking car ride, a rollercoaster if you will. And it's ANOTHER DC au but with yeah VAMPIRES so buckle-up.
It has major Batfam moments in the beginning and one of my favorites Damian and Tim interactions ( I'm going to reblog this with photos because Tumblr is homophobic and isn't letting me add more photos in this shit >:( ). Then it goes hard on betrayal (trying not to add spoilers) and feelings so get ready for that.
I unfortunately haven't finished (casual reader remember that) but the much I've read was really, really good.
It gets very silly very quickly as anything made with vampires generally get (unfortunately they butchered a lot of characters in the process) but if you go head empty no thoughts you're going to get a lot of fun and maybe cry a little if that gets to you.
So this is it. I'm sure it has more of it, and oh I'm sure I forgot a lot of it but those are the one's I could get from the top of my head, so I hope you and all of the people who want to follow it have fun!
Also if someone has more recommendations feel free to add on the Reblogs, I'm sure I will eat it up anyway.
#Also Batman & Robin Eternal has been sitting on my reading list for a while (lies)#I've read a couple of panels today and seems really promising a lot of Dick & Tim & Jason interactions! Harpey my dear is also there to!#so if someone wants to check go for it I for now have no idea of it's good or not#but I will (eventually (*I hope*))#q asks#q recommendations#batfamily#batfam#dick grayson#jason todd#bruce wayne#tim drake#damian wayne#duke thomas#stephanie brown#cassandra cain#alfred pennyworth

~ Red Hood and The Outlaws (2011) Annual #2
Jason: "Dad", as I like to call him. Batman to the rest of the world.
JASON CALLING BRUCE "DAD", LET'S GO!!!
Yes, it's a dream/hallucination thingy, a bad guy is in Jason's head, making him believes he and his friends are kids celebrating christmas at the Wayne Manor (Alfred is in the background in one panel doing butler's stuff), and are trying to save Christmas or something, but it still Jason thinking of Bruce as his dad. Also, the use of "like", he likes to call him "dad".
#batman#bruce wayne#jason todd#red hood#dc comics#my ramblings#dc doesn’t let them call him dad often so we are celebrating this one folks#Jason presenting Bruce as “dad for me batman to you all” is gold#also roy and kory can hear his narration so they definitely heard that

JayRose Reading List
because i’m insane
Teen Titans (2003) #47. Where they first meet! She holds him at sword point.
Red Hood and the Outlaws (2011) #39. She holds him at sword point again which is the only, like, important thing here.
Titans: Titans Together (2021) #2. I think this is technically an elseworld, but I like it because it gives us a “this is why they’re friends.”
Robin (2021) Annual #1. They gossip about their families. Slay.
Joker: the Man Who Stopped Laughing (2022). Rose shows up later in the series, but it’s a fun series overall, so just read the whole thing.
Batman/Catwoman: Gotham War: Red Hood (2023) #2. Rose’s characterisation here is iffy but. It’s silly. Okay? Okay.
Elseworlds
JayRose only became a Thing because of Elseworlds, so here we go!
Future State: Gotham and the back issues of Future State: Dark Detective. They are bounty hunters!! It’s silly and fun and Jason is so pathetic about her 🧡
DCeased: Dead Planet. This whole event was a comedy to me but issue 5 had me in tears. Yeah.
Okay that’s all because I’m so insane about them. Will try to update if they appear in more stuff but who knows.

to the fav jason comic of all time question just list all of them!
anything written by:
winick, idc i know there's some issues in his stories but they're pretty solid overall, utrh, lost days, green arrow, and the story he wrote for the robin anniversary
barr, of detective comics robin jason fame. Particularly loved his two face arc (detective comics #480-481 iirc)
Then:
Batman #408-413 (1987) --> original post-crisis jason todd run before someone who hated robin took over, my baby and dear
Batman Annual #12 (1988) --> PEAK robin jason
New Talent Showcase (2017) --> a short story starring Jason and Duke. He's not the main character but he's written so well that i'll always add it to my fav jason comics list
Red hood: Outlaw #51-52 (2021) --> listen delivering a good arc in TWO issues and after lobdell wrote everything else? an entire talent on its own. i love this mini arc, how jason is written, how it fleshed out his background, the new dynamics it added. just. exquisite.
Event Leviathan #2-3 (2019) --> i loved him here idgaf, that fight? i just moaned out loud, everyone was calling it bullshit but it was so in character, we will never get his fighting abilities respected again but it was worth it
Batman: Gotham Nights #11 (2020) --> i had been begging for a steve orlando jason comic for YEARS when this dropped and it didn't let me down. loved the characterization and how it fleshed out jasons background
Batman/Superman Annual #1 (2014) --> if you weren't there for the mess of n52 storylines this comic might be confusing but i love it sooo much, it showcases his competency and i enjoyed his dynamic with the different characters
Countdown Presents: The Search for Ray Palmer (2008) --> i just. love. this. mini series. i like his personality there and the different scenarios are fun, particularly loved the gotham by gaslight one!
Injustice 2 #3 (2017) --> yes injustice is garbage etc but this issue was JAYSTORY, you had to be there when this was released weekly and we were all waiting for the confirmation of him being batman. when he bet bruce like it was nothing? MMMMH YEAH
Convergence: Batman and Robin (2015) --> what if someone took morrisons canon and made it enjoyable for jason stans?
Batman and Robin #20 (2013) --> this might be a controversial pick but i liked jason here, like ack he really was ready to help bruce..
Tiny Titans (2010-2012) --> tiny titans.
Theres some recent comics i've enjoyed but i'll let them age and see if i still like them in a year to add them to the hall of fame
brought to you by admin 🐅
#feel like im forgetting some.. will add them later if thats the case#jason todd#asks#anonymous#faq#?
