I cant do this anymore - George Russell x Wolff! Reader Part 5
Plot: You are the daughter of Toto Wolff team principle of Mercedes-AMG Petronas, you've worked your whole life to become an engineer. However, your dad has other ideas for you and doesn't want you to become a race engineer. You start to confide more in the Red Bull Racing Team Principle to help you get an engineering job, and see him as your present father figure.

Tumblr media
There was a pretty decent break between Brazil and Las Vegas, you spend the first week with Geri and Christian and their kids. You'd had a blast riding their horses, going for bike rides and lots of baking.
They of course let you stay with them in the spare bedroom, you went on a massive shopping spree with Geri getting some new clothes as you hadn't gone home and talked about everything you normally would with Suzie. You couldn't lie, you really missed her, especially the hugs she gave you.
However on the weekend before Vegas, Lewis had texted you seeing if you'd wanted to stay with him in Las Vegas for a bit. Lewis had known you since 2009, you were 9 years old. You always came to as many race weekends as you could, obsessed with F1 as much as your dad. You loved the fast cars and the smell of the fuel.
Here was were you were introduced to Suzie, it was perfect time really. You were a 9 year old girl, about to enter here teen years without a mother figure. And Suzie and you, got on like two peas in a pod.
In 2012 when he became the executive director in Williams you travelled with him. Your mum didn't want anything to do with you, so that left you to be home school. It wasn't easy in Williams, they were tight on money and resources despite Toto's financial contributions to the team and no-body had time for you it seemed.
The next year when your dad moved to Mercedes, that had a slightly bigger budget and more time around the paddock was when it became easier.
The engineers helped you with your math's and science while marketing and legal would help you with your English. That's where your love of engineering came from.
Lewis would often stay with you, he and Nico were like brothers and they couldn't help but see you like a little sister with the relentless teasing they put you through.
As you got older, Toto paid for you to have an online tutor so you could sit your GCSE's at some point. 2016 was probably the worst year you had on record apart from everything that's happened in 2023.
You could tell that when they started to compete for the championship in 2014 that things were getting tense between them, they tried to keep it to themselves but you could tell with the post race interviews and how they didn't want to hang out as much together with you.
But in 2016, when Nico won and their friendship had pretty much crumbled as far as it could you, you were also sitting those GCSE's and it was a really tough year for you. Lewis and Nico now spoke to you separately, their sides of the garage never crossing over like they used to.
So you not only had the stress of your GCSE's, the stress of your two role models no longer talking and with that your own childhood best friend cutting you off because of how much you travelled and your commitments not being strong enough. And to top it of Nico was confirmed to be leaving the sport which would mean you wouldn't see him as often.
However, despite everything that went on you came out with some really good grades, thanks to Lewis and his help when it come to studying.
You actually met George the year after when he became a junior driver for Mercedes. You had just turned 17 and he was 20 and part way working his way up through the feeder series into Formula One.
You actually had a crush on George all the way back then, Lewis convinced you it was just a silly little school girl crush you'd soon get over and motorsport men were a walking red flag. Which you found out was true with your first heartbreak when you dated an F2 driver that was the same age as you. You dad of course was hesitant at first, and he was right to be. He cheated on you with one of the insta models 7 months into your relationship.
Lewis did a lot for you and you guys were close, so you almost felt like you couldn't say no even though you didn't want to anyway.
You got the first flight you could out to his LA mansion.
"Hello" he greeted you as you'd found him in the airport with his security. There was of course Paps so it was only a short amount of time before people knew you were here with Lewis.
He drove the pair of you back to his LA home, you guys spent the rest of the week surfing, go-karting and walking Roscoe. Everyone knew you were here by now so you posted a photo dump on the Wednesday to Instagram, photos of everything you guys had been up to.
Everyone in the comments was so excited that big brother Lewis was back.
"So, I think now that we've had some time to chill out we should talk about the serious matters on the table" Lewis says as he spoons some of the vegan dish his private chef had made you guys.
"Mmmm?" you hum as you gobble more of the delightful food down.
"I miss you in the Mercedes Garage and the red bull top doesn't suit you" he says making your head whip to the side.
"Excuse me!" you nearly choke on your food.
"Look, I know what Toto and George did was foul... and others have made it into this whole dramatic show, but I miss teasing you in the garage and I miss you telling the engineers something was wrong and trying not to laugh! I miss you! Everyone does, George, Toto, Suz, all the hospitality and mechanics and the engineers!" he offers looking at you.
"I'm not coming back to Mercedes Lew, I've found my place in Red Bull, they've even let me help on the 2024 car! My dad turned me down straight away when i asked, they trust me there and they like my ideas! I'll talk to both of them okay, I promise but Red Bull stuck their neck out for me hiring me... so I owe them!" you admit, knowing Red Bull helped you a lot, as much as you'd helped them.
"I know I know, but just talk to them soon. They are both suffering and they regret what they did!"
You drove in Lewis car all the way to Nevada. It was only a 4 hour drive where you guys did make stops along the way. You guy's parted ways as you got there. He needed to be present for media duties and you had to be with Red Bull making sure the car was up to standard.
You checked in with everyone you hadn't seen for the two week gap, checking in with the mechanics making sure they though the car was looking okay after the race.
And before you knew it Max was coming out of FP1 in 4th, FP2 in 6th and FP3 in 4th. It was a new track and everyone was getting used to the it and how the car performed on it. In Practices it was more for the driver to get the feel for the car.
Max qualified P3, but because Carlos had to take a 10 place grid penalty he was moved up to P2. He was on the front line next to Charles Leclerc and if he got a good start he could finish again P1.
Vegas was a stressful race for everyone. Charles and his Ferrari was made for the layout of this street circuit it seemed. Lando had a really bad crash which had everyone worried.
Ferrari, once again fucked up their strategy as you called Max to box when the safety car was released. Charles had only pitted a few laps prior. Now Max and Sergio were on the fresher tires.
"Warm those tires up Max then when DRS is available go for that overtake on Turn 3 for P1" you advise as he rolls out of the pits behind the safety car that Charles was already following.
Eventually you had both Red Bulls in the front ready for a 1-2 podium. But on the final lap Charles went for the overtake on Sergio and broke the Red Bulls up, there was no way he'd catch up with Max but you told him to hold his position.
Again Max Verstappen had one his 18th race of the season and you'd been his race engineer for a whole new track. He'd pulled you into a massive hug, along with Christian who was impressed with how quickly you were adapting to the new role.
"Amazing driver guys! Straight to Abu Dhabi now!" Christian grins, nothing could now ruin his mood. Max had been confirmed Champion of the World a few races back but Red Bull still wanted to prove they were winners.
And that you did, you went to Abu Dhabi and one again by a landslide. You all celebrated the end of the season and Max asked you to come up on the podium with him again. However, George had come P3. so you were up on the Podium with him and Charles too.
The champagne was brought out and all the guys showered each other before coming over to you. They soaked you with the rest of the champagne the dark team gear sticking to your skin.
"Omg" you squeal as someone pulls back your top and dumps some of their champagne down your back. You swivel round to see George. Everything is so loud around you right now. Charles and Max are off celebrating the podium together a little further away from the pair of you now.
"George" you say looking up at him and he sheepishly takes a step back.
"George, no! I'm sorry I didn't speak to you sooner" you say looking at him, only for his head to cock to the side where he couldn't here you.
"What?" he shouts coming closer.
You lean in right up to his ear so that he can actually here you.
"I'm sorry I ignored you for so long. I was being childish. Lewis... Lewis talked some sense into me." you say.
"You-" he starts confused. He was the one that owed you an apology not the other way around.
"Y/N listen to me. Meet me tonight and we will talk about everything I promise!" he shouts making you able to hear him over the crowd.
"Okay!" you nod, before turning around and the Red Bull team all cheer as you hold up the trophy.
"Oh and George, Congrats of P3!" you grin, before joining Max and Charles.
Maybe it was time for you to talk it out. Maybe even to reach out to your dad! Lewis was as always right!

What about Shigadabi stuck in America? (I have no idea why I think this is funny but I feel like Dabi would be hella confused while Shigaraki speaks English. Like Dabi would think that Shigaraki speaking English, which he doesn’t understand, is a personal attack on him)….as you can tell my one brain cell is working extremely hard-
They go to America for? Crimes? Dabi has to wear a full face-covering mask so that no one immediately recognizes him, and sort of just stands around like a grunt while Shigaraki actually does the business part of their work.
they get what they needed to and Dabi is being a little bitchier than usual because he feels completely useless in this situation because he can't read signs, he can't speak, and he can't help with the actual work at all unless Shig is holding his hand and walking him through it.
Shigaraki puts up with this until they're in private and then asks him what his fucking deal is, and after some prodding, he finds out Dabi's insecurities aren't just from not knowing the language, but also because he still struggles with the fact that he stopped getting an education at 12. He's tried really hard to read and educate himself however he can whenever he can, but he still finds himself dealing with big gaps in his knowledge that kind of make him feel like shit when they come up.
They leave America and go back to Japan and Dabi thinks that will be the end of it, but a couple of days later he realizes someone broke into his room and downloaded a new program onto his e-reader. Shigaraki found an online course for people who left school at any age, and that allows them to test for their learning level and start to take classes again privately on their own, with tutors available (though asynchronous and remote so they can't identify their students). He also recognized that Dabi isn't the only villain who had that experience, and he figured out a way to make that tech available to the entire PLF. I mean, Re-Destro talked down to Shig and treated him like shit when he jut thought that Shigaraki hadn't received any formal education, it must be worse for people who didn't get the tutoring his teacher gave him. And hell, Twice had to drop out of middle school when he was orphaned, and Toga should be in high school right now. There are other people who need help too.
Dabi is sharply touched by this and starts to put as much work into his studying as he does their actual work, and he starts to learn English, going to Shig for tutoring when he needs it. They are doing pretty well in a few months when they have to go back to America again to check in on their business ventures there, and while they're there, Dabi is doing a lot better. Though he does have a question for Duster-- and he asks what "I love you" sounds like in English. Shig tells him, and Dabi repeats it and waits. And waits. And then in Japanese just gives up and tells Tomura that he's dense as a fucking brick and kisses him.

So I may be having some trouble at school and I was wondering if Gn! Reader could try and get some help in math from Donnie? (Or all if this is a HC situation.)
either way, just reader begging Dee or the others for some help and being super duper grateful when their grade goes up?
Mathematically Inclined
Tumblr media
author’s note: I personally hate math, I’m an English major, I went as far away from math as possible, would’ve been nice to have Donnie help me out in statistics last semester T-T
warnings: cursing, fluff :D
—————————————————————————
It was the end of the world. You had t-minus two days until your big exam. And it was comprehensive of every single chapter you had to learn that semester. And you had went through a lot of chapters, twelve, but who’s counting right?
You had your notes and you had previous chapter exams and even homework to go over. But it wasn’t clicking, and you were starting to feel DOOMED. Holding back a dramatic sob and thinking of how tragic your transcript would look with a big fat ‘F’ for college algebra. You decided you needed help. Normally, you’d just suffer in silence, you weren’t the type to rely on others. In fact, you were very proud to have gotten this far on your own. If this had been any other subject you’d have it in the bag. But it was math.
“Donnie please I need your help,” you said into your phone. “With what exactly?” Donnie asked, currently he was working on multiple things. He hadn’t left his lab in days, he hadn’t even answered your first call! “I’ve got this really big test and it’s make or break time. If I fail this I’m getting an F.” If Donnie couldn’t teach you then you just didn’t know what else to do. Studying on your own wasn’t going well. It was too late to schedule for tutoring. You waited with bated breath for Donnie’s answer, “when’s the exam?” it wasn’t an answer but at least it wasn’t a straight up rejection!
“Two days!” You whimpered, “please Dee, please please please help me!” You were resorting to begging for pete’s sake! You heard a long sigh, “alright but you have to come here, bring some energy drinks.” And the nerd hung up in your face.
You couldn’t believe it. He said yes?! You were scrambling to get all of your things in your backpack. Thankfully you had the drinks already in your fridge, your roommate liked to stay up late gaming when they didn’t have school work to do. “Borrowing a couple of these I’ll get you more!” You called over your shoulder as you raced out of the door. Heading for the lair but specifically to Donnie.
You had an energy drink in your hand, giving it to Donnie as soon as you passed through the lab doors. And boy did he need it! His eyes looked so strained like he hadn’t slept for days! “Dee what’s up?” You asked, concerned for your friends health. “Just been busy, can’t afford to sleep right now, I’m so close to finishing its maddening.” The purple turtle sighed as he looked over your notes.
“What seems to be your issue? I mean everything you have written down is correct,” it was your turn to sigh. “Yeah well that’s just it, I’m never the one doing the problems I’ve been using the internet for homework…” you grumbled, more than embarrassed to admit your faults. “So, you’ve been cheating?” Donnie raised an eyebrow. “I mean is it really?! Everything so far has been online, I’m just using the resources I have available. And now the last test is in person?! It seriously blows!!” You huffed at the end of your rant, only to see that Donnie was smirking.
“So you don’t know how to do any of this yourself and you want me to teach you a semesters worth of work in less than two days?” The way he put it, it sounded impossible! You slouched over, elbows on your knees, hands to your face. “So it’s hopeless?” You mumbled. The last bit of hope you had finally draining. “I didn’t say that, just wanted to clarify,” you peeked out of your hands to see Donnie had a small smile on his face. You wondered if he thought this was funny. You swallowed your irritation, latching onto the last spark of hope.
“Alright let’s do this.” You said, determination written on your face. You cracked open your own drink and took a long swig then with a pencil in hand you waited for instructions. “Start with this, x raised to the 5th…”
The whole first day was pretty rough. It was nonstop problems. Going from the basics of chapter one and building your way back up. By the end of the day you had a solid piece of foundation and at least knew how to start tackling the problems from chapter one to five. “How about a break, we could both use a nap, we’ll pick up where we left off,” Donnie was yawning and he stood stretching out his legs and arms. You leaned back in your swivel chair, “sounds good to me,” you said tiredly as your eyes instantly closed. You’d fall asleep right there in one of his lab chairs.
“C’mon you goof, you’ll hurt yourself sleeping there.” You blinked drowsily, not wanting to move but forcing yourself to get up, following his lead as he led you to a couch in the back of his lab. “Wake me up in an hour,” you mumbled sleepily as you curled up on one end of the couch. Donnie shook his head, throwing a purple blanket over you and going to the other end. He scrolled through his phone for about five minutes before setting a timer and falling asleep too.
The snooze button was hit a couple of times as the both of you grumbled at the rude awakening an hour later. “5 more minutes!” You pleaded and Donnie who was more tired than you readily agreed. 15 minutes later your eyes were widening as you sat up from your spot on the couch. “Shit shit shit! Donnie we gotta go back to studying!” You said and he was jumping up from his position, “mhm yeah I’m awake!” he yawned as he grabbed the blanket and wrapped it around himself, walking back over to where your notes were on his table.
“Alright… where were we.. oh yeah!~” Genius Donnie was back into the swing of things before you were fully seated. The rest of the studying became a blur. Truly you didn’t even know if you would be able to remember it all but you got through all the material with Donnie’s help, all 12 fucking chapters. “Anddd that’s about it!” Donnie said tapping the white board he had brought over to write the equations out with you. He had learned quickly you were a visual learner. “With four hours to spare,” you practically weeped as you looked down at your phone. “3 hour nap and then I’ll head there,” your words were slurred from sleep deprivation. Honestly you didn’t know how Donnie could function without sleeping for days on end.
“Back to the couch!” He said half dragging you there as your feet stumbled multiple times. Both of you collapsed onto the couch. “Thanks Donnie, really I appreciate it,” you murmured, snuggling into his side and falling asleep faster than he could reply. If he wasn’t so tired himself he’d be pushing you away, he couldn’t even find himself to be embarrassed, “geez,” was all he could say, closing his eyes as he felt his cheeks rise in heat. Thank god you were already passed out, he didn’t know what he would do if you had seen him blushing! He tried to ignore the feeling of your cheek pressed against his plastron, or how your hair was so soft. He was speaking a mantra in his head just wishing to fall asleep along with you, it took a couple of minutes but he finally did.
You woke up with a start. Something felt wrong and you gasped, waking up Donnie who had his head resting on top of yours. “Wha- what’s wrong?!” He said rubbing his eyes to clear the blurriness. “What time is it?!” You said scrambling for your phone but it wasn’t on the couch. Donnie raised his wrist tech, “you’ve got 30 minutes,” he breathed out and you were running to your things. “Oh my god, I’ve gotta go, thanks again Donnie, see ya later, wish me luck!” And you were out of his lab door, like a whirlwind. “Good luck,” he said even though you were already gone, and he smiled, hoping you’d get a decent grade so you could be happy and get some sleep.
Three hours later you burst into the lab, “HEY-“ Donnie had started to yell thinking it was one of his dumb dumb brothers but stopped once he saw it was you. “Oh Y/n? How’d it go?” He placed down the tech parts he was working on. Removing his gloves and wiping his brow, turning to face you. You had tears in your eyes! “Y/n?” He said softly, and you ran forward lunging for him. “Oomph-“ he was more than surprised thinking you’d be mad if you were crying but he felt you squeeze his torso. “I knew what I was doing!! I’m pretty certain I made a bangin’ grade! Definitely a C+ if not a B!!” You squealed happily as he felt the happy tears pour down your face.
He sighed with relief, thankful that was the reason for the tears. “That’s great to hear Y/n,” he was happy for you. “Thank you so much Donnie, you’re the best!! You’re my hero!” You said your face tilting upwards to look at him with shiny eyes. He gulped, not knowing what to say and feeling overwhelmed and more than a little sheepish at the compliments. “Ah- well- you’re welcome,” he managed to get out. “Do you wanna celebrate with me?? I’ll get anything! Your favorites!” You beamed up at him, still holding him tightly. He couldn’t stop himself, he couldn’t hold it back any longer. His face flushed a dark green and he nodded. More than happy to get his favorite pizza to celebrate your success. “Yeah sure,” he said trying to seem unfazed even though his face felt hot.
You giggled, a slight blush coloring the top of your ears. “I’m on it then!” Your hands slowly letting him go as you turned your back to order the pizza. Donatello’s hands hadn’t moved from his sides but he was clenching them into fists now, resisting the urge to pull you back to him. Oh Galileo was he screwed! He blew out a breath, doing it anyway, pulling your back to meet his plastron as he rested his chin on your head. Trying to act like this was totally normal, he hummed looking down at where you were at with the online order. “Get some cheese sticks too,” he mumbled and you were turning red as you relaxed into his hold, “s-sure!”
Maybe math wasn’t so bad after all… you thought to yourself, especially if you got to study with such a cute genius! You clicked order and closed your phone, moving your head to look upwards as he lifted his chin off of your head to be able to peer down at you. “I think I like math now..” you said a little dumbfounded. Donnie couldn’t help it, he burst into laughter, holding you tightly to him, you were just too cute. “I don’t know, I think I like something else,” Donnie smirked after his laughing subsided, he noticed your burning ears and bit down on his lower lip, thinking you were absolutely adorable.

I've figured out the You’re Almost Home Timeline so for the gang who care about the passage of time it's under the cut.
Firstly, I have chosen to totally ignore the gravestone dates because of Reasons, including "okay look I started writing this when it wasn't on streaming and this is mostly so it makes sense to me" and "time is an illusion I just need to know this so I can say what year it'll be on NYE". Felix has a January birthday in my little canon and nobody can stop me.
So let's go!
2007
Felix is in Expensive Rehab Facility until Christmas. Sir James and Lady Elspeth have pulled a lot of strings to make sure that Felix's accident won't impact him in any way, shape or form. This mostly means getting him an expensive tutor and essentially permission to submit all of his work online. No need for tutorials because he's had a hard time and is a very special boy. Felix takes this chance to essentially do as much work while he's stuck in the facility as he can because there's fuck all else to do, and he's being made to quit smoking so he's mad about that. Farleigh's back as if he never left, and Venetia is being an absolute rock.
Oliver returns to Oxford, makes contact with the Student Counselling Services, and throws himself into studying so hard it hurts. He needs to distract himself. They allow him to switch tutors and move to a different dorm where he turns into a studying hermit. If he sees any of the Alpha Hotties, he hides. He becomes invisible again, even more than before. His new tutor helps him switch to an accelerated degree program.
2008
Felix turns 21 and does the Spring and Summer terms. His parents decide to go on a tour of Europe to celebrate Felix getting back on the horse. They also know he's going to graduate, because the Special Little Boy measures are in place for him so all he has to really do is log on to Moodle and submit one of his pre-written essays every so often. He's burned a few bridges because he's being very twattish. Felix decides to sack off Christmas term and heads to Bali in late July/early August. Sir James has made sure he has internet access, so what's the point of even being in Oxford? He meets Lucia, who is 18 and on her Gap Year. Because it's the end of the summer, there aren't many options, so Felix sticks with her. Harry is part of the group from maybe like... week three? Luckily, Lucia is on a cleanse, so although they're partying, she isn't drinking or indulging in anything else. In November, Lu gets food poisoning- or so they think, until the doctor Felix hauls her to gives them the news. Felix contacts his parents in a hurry, and they are flown back to the UK and subjected to a major parental conference. Felix proposes to Lu at a Catton Christmas party.
Oliver graduates early. He doesn't go home for the holidays, saying he needs to keep studying. He decides on teaching because it won't be sustainable to be a student forever. His tutor is a major help; he's from Newcastle, although you wouldn't know it because his accent has long since faded and has taken Oliver under his wing. He remains Oliver's main advisor throughout his studies and is probably the reason he gets the job- he's keeping an eye on him so he knows there'll be a Northern Lad Professor once he eventually retires. They're not exactly friends, but there's a lot of mutual respect there.
2009
Felix turns 22 and marries Lu shortly after. He briefly returns to Oxford, but mostly to make sure he graduates. Harry is born in on the 10th of April and he gets his degree in absentia. Lu gets pregnant with Ru maybe a little too soon afterwards, and Rufus is born prematurely on the 27th of November. Oopsie.
2010
Oliver gets his Masters degree in english literature.
2011
Sir James dies of a heart attack in May.
2013
Ellie is born on the 1st of August. Felix gets a vasectomy.
2014
Oliver gets his PhD. His thesis was titled "Narrative Accessibility and Diversity within Academia".
2015
Lady Elspeth passes away in her sleep.
Then a bit of a time jump until
2020
Oliver is finally an associate professor after being in postdoc for 6 years.
Farleigh finally hits on a startup that works- a designer resale app that offers item verification for an add-on fee. It's wildly successful, mostly because he's been hobnobbing in America hardcore and is getting a ton of celebrity endorsements.
2025
Venetia is diagnosed with lung cancer.
2026
Venetia passes away. Felix is bereft.
Harry gets her A level results and Oxford place, despite being 17- Lucia, having not got a degree herself, is adamant that her children be highly educated as fast as possible... and Harry will turn 18 in her first year anyway. Harry doesn't mind this, as she has a fake ID and cannot wait to be away from boring boarding schools.
Oliver Quick receives an email notifying him that, amongst others, he will be tutoring Harriet Catton.
And then Felix Catton walks into his office, and they proceed to go bonkers.

do you have an idea about jobs from home, this year i will go to collage,i will live alone and i want to begin to be a little independent and i want something to do while i am in collage, sorry for my broken english
Hey!
Don’t worry about your English. English is not my native language as well, so I understand the struggle!
I am not an expert in job hunting or even knowledgeable about every online/remote job out there, but in my case, I am going to give language classes and tutor for topics like math, or physics on platforms like preply, italki, superprof, cambly. ( I can give advice concerning these platforms, I have been doing research on how to market properly your skills on these platforms).
You can get a very reasonable, and even comfortable income with these platforms if you put in the work. It depends what amount you would like to earn per month. Depending on what you study or your hobbies, you can also sell your skills on platforms like Fiverr. ( programming, art, translation, etc.)
If anyone else has some other suggestions, let us know!!
I hope this helped at least a little bit and I wish you the best for college 🫶🏻

I knew you were based in Aberystwyth, but I didn’t know you were linked with the university, or the Celtic Studies course for that matter either, which is a course I’m planning to apply for!
I’m not sure whether this is overstepping, but I was wondering if you have any advice for academic enrichment in the mean time- I have limited knowledge of Welsh itself because even though my dad can speak it, I was never really taught it. I went to the uni open day, and they recommended ‘Say Something in Welsh’ which looks like a really good resource, and I was wondering if you knew any sites (or books!) which could be good to further look into, especially if you know where I could find medieval Welsh literature in modern Welsh online.
Also, I’m interested in Welsh history and language conservation, and if you have any book recommendations on those I’d definitely check them out!
Sorry for the long ask, I hope this finds you well
I'm so sorry anon that I'm getting to this so late (it's been months -mae'n ddrwg gyda fi!) but I will try and answer some of your questions now.
The Celtic Studies department at Aberystwyth is really lovely and quite small so everyone kinda knows each other. My Welsh teacher and personal tutor was Simon Rodway - he's a really lovely guy and was the first member of staff I shared my chosen name with (he helped me find out how to change my name on the Uni systems to my chosen name as well).
I've heard good things about SaySomethingInWelsh - the Uni also does (in the Celtic Studies department) intense summer courses in Welsh in person and online (I did mine online because pandemic) with DysgyCymraeg, who I also recommend. I have a post about free Welsh learning resources here:
For Medieval Welsh literature in Modern Welsh - dafyddapgwilym.net has a collection of Dafydd ap Gwilym's poetry in the original Middle Welsh, Modern Welsh and in English translation. Just click Cymraeg or English, go to Y Cerddi/The Poems and select a poem from the drop-down menu. More options will come up when you do this (including notes and where you can find the manuscripts the poems are from). I'm not usually a Medievalist so I'm gonna ask if any of my followers/mutuals have any recommendations for this.
For Welsh language conservation- (or language conservation in general) I would check out the module "Language Revitalisation in a Global Context" - usually run by Ben (another really sound lad from the department who teaches Irish and Scottish Gaelic) - I think that module is available in Second and/or Third year. But I do recommend it!
Apologies for answering this so late - feel free to send another message if you have any more questions.

Any recommendations for a person trying to learn Greek?
Yes, definitely! I also wrote a post on learning Modern Greek online.
I am not sure what your native language is or if you know any other languages. I studied German before Greek, and so I found Greek grammar very easy in comparison.
To start with, it's slightly more complex than Spanish for English native speakers since it uses a case system (changing noun, adjective, and article endings). But I found the patterns fairly regular and easy to remember! So it is not stressful at all. And since many words are similar between English and Greek, you will find it easy to pick up vocabulary.
For learning, this was what I did:
A1/A2
Timeframe: 9-12 Months, Depending on how fast you go
Tools:
Duolingo: 5-6 lessons/1 crown a day, or 30 minutes
Rosetta Stone: 3 lessons a day, or 30 minutes
Language Transfer Greek: 1-2 lessons a day, 10-20 minutes
LingQ: Free reading, when chilling out
When you finish Duolingo and Rosetta Stone materials, watch Eisai To Tairi Mou on Youtube. The wonderful George has subbed the whole series in English.
For textbooks, I used Take Off In Greek. I did 1 lesson a week after completing Duolingo/Rosetta/etc. This takes about 3 months. There is an audio CD, which you may need to buy separately. I'm not sure.
I also started tutoring while working on the textbook. I meet with Georgia on Italki, who is amazing.
B1/B2
I'm still working on this. 😉
Colloquial Greek is a good textbook here. It's very fast, though. Lots of vocabulary. Routledge also has a Modern Greek Reader, which is advanced but quite good.
But if you want in-depth resources, look at "publications" from Omilo.
Lydia is a good review of A1/A2, all dialogues. They also have workbooks on verbs, Greek music, podcasts, etc. Their B1/B2 book is Fiyame, and it's all in Greek.
At this point, I would work through either Colloquial or Fiyame while working with a tutor 1-2x a month or more.
There is also a Greek Mastodon server - https://kafeneio.social/explore
I am not on this server, but I follow and interact with many people on it. I also use Greek as my default language. 😊
University of Athens
I want to point out that there is an affordable learning course from the University of Athens. It is an online course. They have multiple language courses, but they have a good deal.
Their basic level course is 150 EURO, but you can get it for less. If you buy one of their culture courses, many of which are 100/120 EURO, you can get the Greek course free. The culture courses are taught in English.
I hope this is all helpful! I find Modern Greek rather fun and easy to digest. So far, the grammar is not very difficult. And many of the A1/A2 resources are free or low-cost. Rosetta Stone can be bought for $167, I think, and be used for multiple languages.

Hi, this is advice for your Brazilian anon, I hope she finds it helpful!
I feel that the way to go would be to focus on studying, there are many great universities abroad that offer full scholarships that include housing, flights and other necessary expenses, and knowing English is a great advantage, regardless of where you apply, even universities in non-anglosaxon countries always offer at least a few degrees taught in English. That way not only would she get great opportunities thanks to that education but would also be exposed to another culture and also would get to build a great network.
I have a few international friends doing their masters/Phds now that have been studying for the past 6-7 years abroad relying 100% on scholarships.
So it is very doable, my advice would be focusing on studying and maybe doing something in addition to build a nice CV, since universities usually ask for it, such as volunteering, tutoring as already mentioned, or taking part on extracurricular activities offered by the school or developing skills through online courses, there are plenty and show your interest on different topics.
Education is wealth 🌻
Great! Thank you for sharing 🥰
@ Brazil anon I hope this helps you!

Strategies for Improving English Fluency
Here are effective strategies and tips recommended by language experts to gain long-term English fluency:
Surround Yourself with English
To soak up the language, immerse yourself in English-speaking environments. Watch English news channels, movies and TV shows without subtitles. Listen to educational podcasts and English music to get accustomed to pronunciation patterns. Spend time on sites like Englishontips.com which provide lessons and resources for learning English. The more exposure you have, the faster you will absorb the language.
Have Conversations
Practice speaking every day with a language partner or tutor. Active conversations allow reinforcing proper grammar and vocabulary while improving spoken confidence. Get corrected on mistakes and focus on tricky sounds. Apps like Tandem let you find language exchange partners worldwide.
Read Aloud
Reading out loud daily strengthens pronunciation and the ability to structure sentences. Start with children’s books and work your way up to more complex texts like newspapers and novels. Record your reading to listen back and identify problem areas. Apps like Speechling provide reading aloud exercises.
Think in English
Challenge yourself to think in English rather than translating in your head. Inner dialogue and self-talk in English will make external speech more natural. Write a daily journal in English to enhance thinking skills. For example, you could write imperative sentences in hindi and then translate them to English to practice both languages. The more you engage in thought processes directly in English, the faster your mastery will improve.
Continually Learn Vocabulary
Having an extensive vocabulary is vital for fluent communication. Learn 20 new words daily using digital flashcards and dictionary apps. Weave these new words into your speech and writing. Reading extensively will also expand your vocabulary over time.
Practice Public Speaking
One of the best ways to gain verbal fluency is by practicing public speaking at every opportunity. Join Toastmasters or a public speaking course to build skills. Upload presentation videos online to review and improve.
Receive Feedback
Ask for feedback from tutors, teachers, native speakers and language partners to improve. Record conversations and analyze your speech patterns. Critical feedback will highlight problem areas for you to work on. View mistakes positively as learning experiences.
Set Daily Goals
Define specific measurable goals and dedicate time daily to achieve them. For example, “I will learn 20 new words and have a 30-minute English conversation with my language partner today.” Maintaining consistency is key.
By combining the above tips into your daily routine, your English fluency will improve dramatically within months. Along with strategies, having the right mindset and motivation are equally critical.
Adopting the Right Mindset for Fluency
More than techniques, achieving fluency requires the right attitude and mindset. Here are some top tips for the optimal English learning mentality:
Acknowledge Flaws Gracefully
Accept that even native speakers make mistakes occasionally. View errors as feedback for improvement rather than reasons for embarrassment. Focus more on getting your message across than speaking perfectly.
Let Go of Inhibitions
Many learners are inhibited by the fear of mistakes or sounding non-native. But the only way to become fluent is by speaking up confidently. Make mistakes fearlessly and course-correct. Eventually, your speech will become flawless.
Be Patient
Remember that gaining fluency requires rigorous long-term practice rather than overnight success. Set incremental goals and celebrate small wins. With regular practice, you will get to an advanced level step-by-step.
Immerse Fully
To absorb a language, you need complete immersion. Don’t let excuses like lack of time prevent your progress. Become obsessed with English – watch, listen, speak, read, write as much as possible! Full immersion accelerates fluency.
Have a Growth Mindset
Believe that language skills can be developed through dedication and practice. Many adult learners feel being fluent is impossible after a certain age. But human brains retain language learning capacity well into adulthood. Stay motivated.
Adopting the right learning attitude and mindset sets you up for success in your quest for English mastery. Along with strategies, having grit and motivation will ensure long-term language fluency.
Overcoming Roadblocks in English Fluency
Despite consistent practice, some common challenges can obstruct your path to fluency:
Anxiety About Mistakes
Many learners hesitate to speak up fearing they will make errors. But mistakes are inevitable and essential for improvement. Let go of perfectionism, speak courageously and course correct. Each error gets you closer to fluency.
Lack of Motivation
It’s common to lose motivation, especially after hitting a plateau in progress. Rekindle motivation by setting new goals, joining a language course or finding accountability partners. Stay inspired by reading fluency success stories.
Limited Vocabulary
Growing vocabulary requires devoted exertion. Understand books, and papers, pay attention to digital recordings and use cheat sheets to learn new words day to day. Applying vocabulary through speaking and writing cements learning.
Fears Around Pronunciation
Don’t let concerns about not sounding “native-like” prevent you from speaking up. Focus on clarity rather than perfection. Record speeches and converse with native speakers to enhance pronunciation.
Negative Self-Talk
Self-doubt and negative self-talk can impede language progress. Notice negative thoughts and reframe them. Instead of “I can't do this”, say “I am becoming more fluent daily with practice.” Be your own cheerleader!
Addressing these common hurdles proactively will help you attain English fluency faster. Seek help from teachers if needed, but keep pushing yourself out of the comfort zone.
Maintaining and Improving Your English After Reaching Fluency
Congratulations, you have now achieved your goal of English fluency! But language learning is an ongoing endeavor. Here are tips to maintain and continue enhancing your English skills:
Have daily conversations with native speakers
Read books, newspapers and magazines in English
Write regularly - maintain a journal, blog or write articles
Limit passive activities like watching movies; stay actively engaged with the language
Join a language course or immerse yourself in an English-speaking country periodically to improve proficiency
Learn new vocabulary words and phrases consistently
Continually seek feedback on your spoken and written English
Surround yourself with people who challenge your language skills and push you to improve
Staying actively engaged with English even after gaining fluency will help you move from proficiency to mastery. This ensures you retain your hard-earned fluency and continue progressing.
Conclusion: Dedication Is Key for English Fluency Success
Gaining mastery over spoken and written English requires dedication and immersion. But fluency is an achievable goal for any motivated learner. Setbacks and plateaus will occur, but consistent practice will ensure long-term success.
Follow the strategies outlined here - converse daily, expand vocabulary, get feedback, read aloud, think in English and more. Complement these with developing a positive attitude. Be patient with yourself on the journey and celebrate small milestones.
With customary practice and devotion, you will change from reluctant speaker to familiar communicator. Open interminable individual and expert open doors through the endowment of English familiarity. Your example of overcoming adversity is ready to be composed.
What Is The Fastest Way To Gain English Fluency?
Full immersion by surrounding yourself with English media, conversations, books etc. is the fastest way. Living in an English-speaking country accelerates fluency. Daily practice is vital - read, write, speak and listen actively.
How Can I Learn English Fluently At Home?
Watch English news, movies, podcasts without subtitles
Read aloud and write daily - maintain a journal
Have conversations with language partners via apps or online tutoring
Think in English; use flashcards and listen to educational content
Practice public speaking - record videos of yourself presenting on topics

Hey! I was nearly fluent in italian five years ago (when I lived there to study) and am going back very soon. I know my language is rusty...... i have the grammar still of course but i find myself forgetting really basic vocabulary now.
I want to be excited but I am so worried that I've become culturally immersed elsewhere, and going back with a language barrier that didn't exist before is really, really scary. I know this is more of an abstract question - apologies - if you have any advice i would love to hear it O_o
Ciao! I do understand your worries, but I do think it's only a matter of trying and immerse yourself back into the language and culture. Basic vocabulary will come back to you the moment you will be back here. Or, if you really feel the need to (and it'll help you stay a bit more calm), you can try and exercise a bit by yourself (you can even send me dms on @sayitalianohome just to exercise. For example you can choose a topic and write about it everyday or week: you can decide if to just try and remember words or maybe take any vocab lists you can find online or even on this blog, repeat the vocabs out loud for a while and then try and write a few sentences. This said, I want to remind you that we won't judge you if you don't remember Italian perfectly: you can even speak English with us, say a word or two or more uncorrectly or communicate through gestures... we will understand you anyway. And again, the moment you'll try again (calmly) to communicate in Italian, Italian itself will come back to you magically :)
I have been studying English in high school and got C1 level FIRST Certificate, but then I kinda stopped practicing it for a few years cause I went to Uni and I didn't have time nor occasion to really talk or write English. When I started again through this blog and other online forums, I was feeling really rusty (and it's the same now with French: I haven't really practiced it for many years). But with time, patience, listening/watching English videos and revising some grammar, I have even ended up tutoring middle school to high school Italian guys. And explaining y'all Italian grammar on here (I know I am not perfect, but I feel I can communicate way better than after that pause). What you learned is still inside of you, you only need to be patient and let it come back to you with no fear of being wrong: you will make mistakes at first, and maybe even later lol but it's fine, don't worry! As long as the other can understand you (and we will, for sure) or you can find another way to tell that thing you want to tell, it's all good. So please, be excited to come back and enjoy the time here :D
Again, here I am if you want to try randomly chatting^^
Take care<3

Langblr Reactivation Challenge: Week 2 Day 6 - Study Tips
This is such a great prompt because the langblr community is full of vocab. lists and motivational “keep studying” posts, but we don’t always explain how to study.
So here are some ways to practice each of the four skills: reading, writing, listening, speaking. These exercises aren’t exclusive to studying Korean and I tried to give methods that can work for beginners & beyond~ [Warning: this post is very long]
:readmore:
Reading
Step 1: Get comfortable reading Hangul
A really common way to increase your Hangul reading speed is to do karaoke aka sing along with song lyrics. This helps because you’re forced to keep up with the speed of the song, which pushes you to read a little faster than you would by yourself. Start with something slow and clear! Note that this isn’t about understanding the lyrics, you’re just practicing sounding out Hangul. This youtube channel puts the lyrics on screen and has a lot of slower songs that are perfect for reading practice :)
Next Step: Reading for Comprehension
Now let’s talk about reading with the goal of understanding. First, find something to read. Ideally, you want a text that has some unknown words/grammar, but not something that’s so difficult you’re having to look up other every word. (This is Krashen’s input hypothesis theory, if you want to get nerdy about it)
Once you’re reading, don’t stop and immediately look up every single unknown word. Try to use context clues to guess what the word might mean. What part of speech is it? Does it appear again on the page? Does it seem similar to a word that you do know (like maybe it has the same prefix or syllable or something like that). How much of the rest of the sentence/context can you figure out without knowing that word?
Then go look up the unknown word(s) and see how they fit into the sentence(s). Compare your initial guesses to the actual meanings.
Another great resource for reading comprehension (that I think is often overlooked) is the TOPIK. There are so many free practice tests online/in apps, and being able to check your understanding by answering the questions is super helpful. I definitely recommend adding some TOPIK questions to your study routine, if you haven’t already~
Writing
Step 1: Handwriting
I’m assuming you take notes while studying new grammar patterns or vocabulary, so I want to recommend handwriting those notes! The act of writing new words helps your brain to remember them. For Hangul, make sure to learn the proper stroke order and keep your handwriting more legible by centering the syllables in between the lines on the page (don’t sit them on top of the lines like we do in English).
Next Step: Putting Your Thoughts Into Writing
A common tip for writing is to keep a diary, and this is a great way to practice & improve! My two tips for this are: 1. you need someone to, at least occasionally, check your writing for errors and 2. don’t write in your native language and then translate, try to use your target language from the beginning.
If you never check your writing for errors, you might end up using a grammar pattern or word incorrectly simply because you misunderstood it. If you don’t have a tutor/teacher, there are places online you can post your writing and ask others to check it.
Writing in your target language can be frustrating when your skills are so basic compared to your native language, where you sound smart and natural. But if you want to get comfortable writing (& speaking!) in your target language, you need to get your brain comfortable with making sentences in your target language. So start with what you know! What can you write with the language you already have? Treat this writing exercise as a time to practice using the language you’ve already studied, not as a time to learn a bunch of new words & grammar.
Once you’ve got some sentence building skills, writing can help show you what you’re lacking. When you encounter something you want to write about but can’t think of a way to do it with the language you have, figure out the missing piece. Do you need the word for something or more grammar? Find out how to express what you’re thinking! When you find the word/grammar you need, make sure you check the definition (not just the translation) and example sentences to make sure it’s really the language you need. Then practice using it in your diary!
Listening
Step 1: Hearing the Words/Sounds
This exercise is called diction and I haaaated doing it in language school but it is super effective for practicing listening, spelling, and improving your short term memory…all important things for language learners.
Get an audio clip, preferably something that has a transcript or subtitles you can check later, and then listen to it while writing down exactly what the speaker says. Start with a single sentence and repeat it as many times as you need. If you don’t recognize a word, that’s okay! Just try to write down what you hear as best you can. Then check what you wrote against the transcript and notice any mistakes you made. Keep in mind that there are words that sound the same but have different spellings, and words where the spelling doesn’t match the sound (although Korean is usually easier than other languages when it comes to spelling).
Next Step: Listening for Comprehension
Not to repeat myself, but the TOPIK has a listening section and the audio clips are pretty short while still covering a wide range of skill levels. So using TOPIK practices questions can be a simple way to practice listening comprehension!
And, just like with reading, you can also listen to a video/audio clip and then think about what any unknown words/phrases might mean before looking them up in a dictionary. Try to listen first without subtitles, since looking at the words can cause your brain to turn it into a reading exercise instead of focusing on the listening. Also, I recommend choosing something conversational (vlogs, reality shows, scripted tv shows) or something formal like a news report, not song lyrics. The goal is to practice understanding natural spoken language, which song lyrics often are not…
Remember, this is active studying, not just zoning out to entertainment! Spend the extra time rewinding and listening again to parts you didn’t understand, looking up & taking notes on new words, and doing dictation exercises.
Speaking
Speaking can be the hardest skill to practice because you need a listener in order to get the full experience. So I highly recommend joining a class or getting a tutor or finding someone (even another learner!) to practice speaking with. I know a lot of people want to wait till they’re “better” at the language, but if you wait until you’re good at speaking, you’re just going to be silently waiting forever~ Start speaking from day 1 and you’ll be able to improve all your skills together!
Anyway… What are some ways to practice speaking when you aren’t meeting with your speaking practice partner(s)?
Step 1: Pronunciation & Intonation
Find a video/audio clip (combine this with your listening practice!) and repeat after the speaker. Try to copy their pronunciation and intonation, i.e. how they say the sentence. This is called “shadowing.” Korean has some sounds that are super different from English, so you need to get your mouth & tongue & throat comfortable with making those new sounds. The way people actually speak can be different from the “proper” way learning materials teach you, like how people often The only thing to be careful about with shadowing is you need to be aware of how the speaker is speaking. Like if they have an uncommon accent or are using a threatening tone or being overly cute, you wouldn’t want to unintentionally repeat that style of speaking. TV shows are easy to shadow, but keep in mind those are actors delivering lines and they might not always sound the most natural.
Next Step: Putting Your Thoughts Into Words
Basically, write your diary out loud instead of on paper. Pretend you are telling a friend about your day or whatever and try to only use your target language. The goal is to be able to speak in complete sentences that flow smoothly. Using natural filler words (like uhh, you know, etc. in English) is good, but try not to trail off without finishing your thought or take long awkward pauses. There’s no one around to judge you, so you can repeat yourself and switch up your word choice 100 times if you want! Also try to incorporate new grammar and phrases you’ve learned recently so you can get comfortable saying them.
You can push yourself by doing little challenges like talking for a full 1 minute (about anything), talking for 1 minute about a specific topic, using 3 different grammar patterns to introduce yourself, giving an elevator speech (i.e. very short) about yourself or your job or your favorite movie, etc.
